Tetrakaidecagon - Coriolis desk tidy

- Ever since I played the game elite in 1984 on my dads BBc micro I wanted to make a Coriolis station. A Tetrakaidecagon or tetrakaidecahedron is a polyhedron having fourteen sides and fourteen angles, i hope your taking notes, there will be an exam later.
During lockdown I replayed Elite again using the BEEB emulator and have been thinking a while on cutting one out of wood and mulling over the procedure for cutting one up on the saw. Managed to find some semi decent 4x4 chunks on a fat pallet and Rubio gave me a sample of their onecoat finish to try out.
Drawing it out onto the timber helped a lot, i dont have angle finders apart from the set square which does the 45 which is all youll need. Once youve drawn them on you can then line it up by eye on the chop saw and set your saw to that, clamp a stop in the right place and its 9 cuts and youre done.
SAFETY - not often I bang on about this, but theres a couple of tricky points First, you might have to secure the guard in an upright position to clear the wood if using full 4x4, be mindful that youve done this and be in control of where your hands are until the blade stops spinning after the cut.
Secondly, making the first cut is relatively as normal for your hand position, when you flip it your then using the saw with your left hand and holding the work with your right. Again its something out of the norm and youd be well prepared to make sure the work is secure and use the clamps that come with the machine. This is of course aimed at us right handed woodworkers, id like to hear back from left handers though, something i dont seem much mention of in regards to using power tools.
You dont have to do this with the chop saw and a decent handsaw and a vice will see you right.
Drilled them out with a forstener bit and they make a great desk tidy for pens and pencils.
Rubio Monocoat oil used, nice stuff and it seems to only need one coat for a decent finish. Applied with a sponge and then left for a day and its come up a treat.

Its not too difficult and all the cuts are the same, once youve got your head round it its done if you know what I mean. Whats twisting me at the moment is the shape of the python ship, its a 17 faced heptadecagon with multiple angles and different sized faces.
