I grew up in the suburbs next to Resurrection cemetery . The story I heard growing up was she got into an argument with her boyfriend on prom night ( hence the long white dress) and she got out of his car on Archer ave. where shortly thereafter was hit and killed by a car. She was buried in Resurrection cemetery. The iron gated bars of the cemetery entrance were bent, I personally saw this . they were bent as if someone pulled them apart. NOT lying. supposedly she would leave the cemetery and hitchhike because she was trying to get home.. when the driver would turn to ask here where she lives ....she was gone. My favorite part that is not often talked about is that there is a bar across the street from the cemetery Chet's Melody Lounge I drank there when I was younger. The owner always had a bloody Mary at the end of the bar, for Mary if she ever wanted to stop by. This is also true I've seen it. No I've never seen her. Great Video, Thanks!
This is the one I heard growing up in the 90s. Sometime in high school, my friends and I tried to find the bent bars, and _maybe_ we found them? Or maybe they were fixed by that point, and we were just on the lookout for something along those lines. Never actually saw her though, nor the ghosts of Country House.

I have a t shirt with the infamous photo of the spirit lady sitting on the stone at Bachelors Grove cemetery on it. A colleague had it made for me because I work in the paranormal. I love it!✌️👻
My uncle actually saw her once around Archer and Harlem back in 1975. He was shocked at what he was seeing snd it didn’t occur to him right away what he saw. There were other witnesses that day as well.
I absolutely love urban legends and terrifying local lore. One that’s not super far from me, and that’s pretty well known is The Bell Witch story. It was the first ghost story to keep me up at night as a kid and while I’m highly skeptical of 99% of the details now, it holds such a soft spot in my heart.
Bell witch is one I've gone to do multiple times and then decided against at the last min every time. I do want to do it at some point, I think it's just always a bit tricky in some ways when it's a topic that has been covered by so many others.

Thank you for creating this video on Resection Mary. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, approximately 45 min away. And this story is something that pun intended to haunt me to this day. The eerie details and chilling atmosphere still send shivers down my spine. Every time I hear the name, I can't help but feel a mix of fear and fascination. It's a story that lingers in the back of my mind, especially on dark, foggy nights. The tale of Resection Mary resonates deeply with me because it was a popular local legend during my childhood. Friends would often dare each other to visit the supposed haunting sites, and the fear of encountering Mary herself was palpable. These experiences have left an indelible mark on my psyche, blending childhood curiosity with genuine terror.
First off, Unsolved Mysteries was a great show, back when times were simpler. It sucks that people dress up and fake her, kinda makes one think it was always a hoax. Whatever started at 17:12, I sure hope it has something to do with a future case. That was straight-up frightening. Great episode as always. I'm personally good with whatever you put out there, just not a huge alien fan, but I'm sure they are out there.
I don't think we had Unsolved Mysteries over here, but we had similar concepts. I think that style of TV show is really the inspiration behind this channel. That weird kind of comfy nostalgia, even though it's about some pretty dark topics. Haha nope not a future case, it's the woman in white from earlier in the video. The audio is a Polish prayer on account of the supposed real Marys mostly being of Polish descent.
@TheTapeLibrary well I'm sure glad that shows like UM are out there, especially for this channel to be around. I thought that was an evil type of prayer or something, I guess that shows where my mind is at. Lol.
Unsolved Mysteries was where I first heard of Mary! Scarred me as a kid. In fact, of all the episodes I saw, this was the one that stuck with me the most. I'm glad to see someone else talking about it 😊
17:12 You had me rewinding and checking my internet connection. I thought there was something wrong and it kept skipping ahead. It didn't help that I was watching this during a Thunderstorm.
I loved this! Thank you so much. Poor Mary. Destined to wander the streets. At least she's in her best frock though. 😊 The part where you described the women in the car seeing her as she stood there glowing actually made me shiver. Back in 1995, my friend and I were driving home from a pub on the Isle of Wight and we saw two glowing figures standing completely still, side by side at the side of the road. The video footage you showed to depict the "glowing" Mary was so like what my friend and I saw. Only our figures had no clothes or hair that we could see, just two golden glowing bodies. The place we saw them was and is an accident black spot and we wondered if they were the spirits of people who had been killed in an accident. We turned the car around and drove back to see if they were still there but they had gone. My friend told me later that when he got home, he told his Mum about it, and she repiled, "Oh yes, I've seen them" 😮😮😮 Keep up the good work, Mr Tape Library, I love these spooky tales and more would be just superb. Thank you!!!❤
You're spoiling us Tape Library! Thanks I'll listen to this as soon as I get a minute to myself. One must pay full attention while watching your video 😊
You always dive deep into these stories, and that's one of the reasons why I love your channel. I had heard about this story numerous times but you've researched it so thoroughly that I feel like it's brand new to me. Great conclusion too 😊
I’ve always been intrigued by the Resurrection Mary story. I remember the Unsolved Mysteries episode from when I was young. It scared me like crazy. I loved it. I’m so happy that the story keeps going after all these years. Thank you.
I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and i remember as a high school kid being a big fan of stories like this! We talked about Mary and the story in high school. Many people say they have seen her near the cemetery. Love this story ❤
This channel is one of the few that makes RUclips worth watching. I wish there was such a thing as ParanormalTube and it had pretty stringent standards for entry. A network with you, Nuke, Mr Ballen, Goosepimples, WartimeStories and DarkKnight etc, where all creators were held to those standards would be something worth paying for.
Yes indeed! More urban legend stories please. Maybe this one, The Black Lady of Bradley Woods is a folklore legend that describes a ghost which reportedly haunts the woods near the village of Bradley, Lincolnshire, England. I really enjoyed this ghost story about Mary, that I didn’t fall asleep in the middle of it. ❤
Born and raised in Chicago. Resurrection Mary and Bachelor's Grove Cemetery are two well known regional urban legends. Probably nothing to either one accept fun stories.
there is a relatively well-known ghost in the small Story Inn in Story, Indiana. apparently, she is friendly and can be summoned in her former bedroom, which is now available to rent, by turning off all the lights but the blue-tinted one left on the bedside table.
TL, another great episode. Resurrection Mary is a very common urban legend. The vanishing hitchhiker trope has been around for ages. I haven’t seen as many instances where the driver believes they hit a real person, only to find no body or evidence that anyone was ever there. There is a country music song called Phantom 309 about a man who encounters a ghostly truck and driver, Big Joe. It makes one uneasy to think that someone “real” has just disappeared from their vehicle. I would definitely be questioning my own sanity if it happened to me. I can’t imagine how much energy it would take to manifest so completely as a living person. The cases where they investigate and find that the girl died years before is interesting because it presumes her spirit is not at rest. Also, I notice the majority of people report female ghosts. Strangely specific. Thanks for a fun episode. 😊❤
There's a similar "highway bride" ghost who haunts upstate New York. My mom saw her in the 80's. What I think is so interesting about these encounters as that it's a global phenomenon of unrelated people seeing the same ghost in different regional locations. I don't think these encounters can be explained by one particular deceased person. I think these beings are something other than ghosts.
@@jessiejeanne9717 I'll have to ask my mom the exact location, will reply when I do. The road was beside a river, outside an old mental asylum she, my dad and their friends were driving by late at night, (cliche, I know but she swears that was how it happened). She told me the bride was just walking through the woods in the dead of night by the road and appeared to be seven feet tall, but when she got a closer look, the bride's feet were floating about two feet off the ground. My mom pointed her out to my dad and their friends and at first they thought the woman was hanging until they realized she was moving through the trees, keeping up with their car. They drove to the nearest town and my Mom called the police on a payphone, thinking that maybe the bride was an escapee from the mental asylum and the floating effect was an optical illusion. My mom had never heard the folklore about the highway bride until I brought it up to her and she told me her story. Upon a little research, I found a story about a bride haunting a road outside of a mental institution in the area she saw her and she said that was the place. I'm terrible with road names but when I ask her again, I can probably get a more precise location.
That's such a good point about this being more of a global phenomenon. I think I'm in the same camp as you, thinking these beings are something other than ghosts. I'm not sure what, though. What do you think? 😮🤓
I used to live down the street from Resurrection Cemetary 💕 we have 5k runs through it around Halloween time so it wasnt really too scary to me, especially growing up lol A big chunk of lore here, but growing up the story Ive always heard was that Mary was killed late at night while walking home from the ballroom. She had got hit by a car and the driver drove off leaving her to die, which is why she can't go further than the cemetary. There was also a rumored flood that resulted in bodies being exposed and than reburied in the wrong places, but I've never personally looked into that. Justice is a small suburb and has a lot of energy heavy areas (my apartment growing up was haunted), so I'm not too surprised.
I really enjoyed your story. I'm from Indiana and grew up telling and hearing this story around campfires. The best part of the night. I'm 63. It's been around a long time. But I've learned quite a few things I didn't know.
The 1970s in Chicago was very creepy around Halloween. Hitchhiking ghosts like Resurrection Mary are a popular urban legend. Love the Unsolved Mysteries intro, my favorite show. The Ghosts of Chicago book is really great.
I’m happy you’re finally getting recognition based off of your views and sub-count. I’ve found your channel in the beginning on this year and have seen the evolution so far🔥
In the 90s my father told me that he saw her in the 60s, I thought he was just lying to try to scare me, now I'm starting to believe he was telling the truth 😳
I grew up and still live in this area. My parents used to own a restaurant on the corner of 63rd and Harlem. There used to be a cemetery grounds keeper that would come in as a regular. My parents noticed that he hadn’t been in a while. One day he came in and my parents asked how he had been. He was usually a happy upbeat man. This time he was acting strange. He told them that something happened at work that he couldn’t explain. He was closing up the cemetery building one night and everyone was gone except one Woman who was praying. He let her know that the cemetery was closing and that she would have to leave. She didn’t answer him just kept praying. He walked back to a bench near the entrance of the building. He said that when he sat down and looked back at where the woman was she was gone. I wish this is where the story ends but he then said that he looked to his side and the Woman was next to him with a black shall. He said it would’ve been impossible for him not to notice her walk up to him because the floors were marble and it would make a loud noise that echoes through the building. When he turned to her, she turned to him and she just said “IM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!” He said he ran out of the building so fast got in his truck and left the cemetery. Someone else had to go and lock everything up for him.
I also want to mention that some people also think she was Anna Norkus, though she was 12 so her age doesn’t exactly fit. She died in 1927. However what’s interesting is she lived at 54th and Neva and my grandparents moved to 52nd and Neva less than two blocks from where she used to live in the 1960s. I figured she is worth a mention
I was originally going to get into a lot of the 'Marys' but it was running a little long and they all seem to have issues that didn't really match up with the story so kept it to just the few most famous ones.
@@TheTapeLibrary that makes sense you possibly could have a whole separate video on “hitchhiking ghosts” Mary isn’t even the only one in the Chicago area.
The Vanishing Hitchhiker is one of the most storied, ubiquitous and important urban legends of all time. Resurrection Mary is just one local twist on it; no doubt the UK has its own versions of the legend too. Apparently the legend even pre-dates the automobile, and you can make a pretty good argument that it's merely a modern-ish offshoot of the classic "woman in white" archetype. For me, it's hard to even entertain the idea that there's any truth to it, but either way, the story is so foundational among urban legends that it does command a certain respect. Another great video, TTL. It's interesting to see how one local incarnation of the legend has evolved over the years, to the point of attaching a specific street & cemetery to the story-makes me wonder if there are any other cities that have done the same thing. It'd be interesting to compare those incarnations of the legend to the Resurrection Mary version, to see if there are any other common details, or any interesting contrasts.
I think the sheer number of reported sightings are what separates Mary out from the standard vanishing hitchhiker lore. That book I mentioned actually goes into that and even separates the vanishing hitchhiker into different categories, it's really interesting!
I'm from the Chicago suburbs and grew up hearing this story. Another popular story is Bachelors Grove. I would love to hear more about that place. I've been there a few times when I was young, and had seen some weird stuff. !! 👀👻👻
17:12 What was that? A brief interruption in the footage? At 17:12? Hmmm. OK OK. Maybe I'll understand by the end. But seriously, if I get some well girl crawling outta my TV tonight, I'm gonna be pissed.
If you want to do more with urban legends i suggest making a video thats a compliation of various urban legends you find super interesting. Theres two urban legends i grew up with near me i always thought were cool. One is the Black Aggie statue in druid ridge cemetary in maryland. Theres a lot of weird beliefs surrounding the statue that i dont believe but are pretty creepy. Then theres the seven gates of Hell. Theyre supposed to be seven gates standing alone in the middle of the woods in Hellam Township, Pennsylvania. Theres multiple legends about where the gates came from and what the gates actually do. The legend i always heard is that as you pass through each gate your mind steadily starts to crumble more and more. If you manage to get through the seventh gate you will be driven completely insane. Either way. Hope to see more urban legends on your channel in the future.

honestly, I've considered it before but the topic just feels a little tricky. I feel like I'd want to cover it in a respectful way and I'm not sure how to do it.
It is a great subject, though. A woodsy area where people go to end it all. How long has this been happening? How long has it been regarded as such? Why here and not another area? Seems like you would need the services of a Japanese speaker to do this justice. Perhaps a collaborator, such as JNightmares?

Bro keep making whatever you enjoy making the most. Because if you like it? We like it. We come to listen to you speak. Even if they’re stories from viewers/listeners, we subscribed specifically because of what you do and how well you do it. If I were to only ask for something, it would just be longer videos. But you don’t have to cuz I usually save shorter content to binge later so I’m happy either way. What I liked about this story is you were still able to give multiple accounts so that was just as satisfying as a compilation of several stories. You could maybe do these then at the end of the week (or biweekly) just drop a long form video of audiences stories all in one since I’d assume those are easier to put together(?). Regardless man, love the content no matter what. Keep it up.
hey! I still do audience stories but I just feature them over on @nightdriveparanormal now, my second channel. Just trying to keep this channel as more deep dive/documentary style stuff

@@mandomendez5618 I guess. Did they mention her being ice cold?😉😂
Lol.
17:12 Scared the shit out of me!!!
@@MeganThorstensen Me too! I wtf'd out loud about it
There is no such a thing as a simpler time.
Unsolved Mysteries was where I first heard of Mary! Scarred me as a kid. In fact, of all the episodes I saw, this was the one that stuck with me the most. I'm glad to see someone else talking about it 😊
Same.
seriously. the scene where she has no face gave me actual nightmares.
@tarawright6571 That was the scene that stuck out! It lived rent-free in my head for a long time, lol
@@ashleys9634 it makes me shudder😨
Yes, I remember that episode and stuck with me too. Looking into a black void, Just that face-less apparition gives me the creeps!
I remember when you had around 2k subs, now you have 200k. Your channel has grown so much in 1 year
I mean I think that was less than 10 months ago! Has been a crazy year
@@TheTapeLibrary Idk why I thought it's been 2 years💀
17:12 You had me rewinding and checking my internet connection. I thought there was something wrong and it kept skipping ahead. It didn't help that I was watching this during a Thunderstorm.
I was juuuust looking to see if anyone had that too! Definitely got me 🙈
I did it too ha ha!
Thank you!!!❤
I think resurrection Mary has finally crossed over. Nobody has seen her in a long time.
Good for her. It must be horrible being a earthbound spirit.
I hope so.
You're spoiling us Tape Library! Thanks I'll listen to this as soon as I get a minute to myself. One must pay full attention while watching your video 😊
Haha, thank you!
Love mowing the yard while listening to these because I’m not doing it after the sun guys down!!!
Haha!
You always dive deep into these stories, and that's one of the reasons why I love your channel. I had heard about this story numerous times but you've researched it so thoroughly that I feel like it's brand new to me.
Great conclusion too 😊
Glad you enjoy it!
I’ve always been intrigued by the Resurrection Mary story. I remember the Unsolved Mysteries episode from when I was young. It scared me like crazy. I loved it. I’m so happy that the story keeps going after all these years. Thank you.
I really hope we never lose these types of stories
I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and i remember as a high school kid being a big fan of stories like this! We talked about Mary and the story in high school. Many people say they have seen her near the cemetery. Love this story ❤
I love the background soundtrack. The creepy music fits the atmosphere
Absolutely brilliantl!!!!! This channel is on another entire level for this genre of channel. Bravo!!!! Keep up the fantastic content.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! :)

thanks for the suggestion
The title alone is wonderful.
Born and raised in Chicago. Resurrection Mary and Bachelor's Grove Cemetery are two well known regional urban legends. Probably nothing to either one accept fun stories.
Showman's Rest has a few good stories too. It is so darn tragic I won't even make a scary clown joke. It is just that sad
Love both videos like this and the longer dives! Keep coming out with the great content!
Glad you like them!
there is a relatively well-known ghost in the small Story Inn in Story, Indiana. apparently, she is friendly and can be summoned in her former bedroom, which is now available to rent, by turning off all the lights but the blue-tinted one left on the bedside table.
This was a great one. Would love to see you cover some (very) old ghost stories out of New York City - 17th, 18th centuries.
I'm in upstate ny, do u know where she is? Ive never heard of her!
@@arthurshort6619Oh wow, that is so very creepy!
These type of entities always appear to wear white, but rarely do they actually appear to be wearing clothes. They can't do faces well, either.
I used to live down the street from Resurrection Cemetary 💕 we have 5k runs through it around Halloween time so it wasnt really too scary to me, especially growing up lol
A big chunk of lore here, but growing up the story Ive always heard was that Mary was killed late at night while walking home from the ballroom.
Yes please more urban legend deep dives
You've made my day! Not finished yet, but another great story from our favourite teller 🖤
Glad you enjoyed it!
These are some of my favorite ghost stories!
Your ending question is right on.
When he turned to her, she turned to him and she just said “IM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!”
He said he ran out of the building so fast got in his truck and left the cemetery. Someone else had to go and lock everything up for him.
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL SO MUCH!!!!! and the lil guest star from Robert Stack :D
Kind of him to pop by
@TheTapeLibrary right!!! Like okay sir, I see you. Magical. I'm here for it!!!
I doubt her name is Mary. That is just a tag people need to give.
Another awesome episode keep up the great work.
Thanks!
@@TheTapeLibrary You're welcome.
As a Chicago native, I approve of this subject matter! 🖤🎃🖤 Thank you kindly, Tape Library !!

Great episode. Happy new Tape Library Day everyone!! 🎉 I would be interested to hear your take on Aokigahara Forest in Japan. You did a great job with haunted forests before :)
honestly, I've considered it before but the topic just feels a little tricky.
Amazing again. Your content keeps getting better and better. I dunno how you do it every time. The small cut aways where an excellent addition and unexpected 😅 ty ❤

Haha I miss that sort of feeling as a kid, far too desensitised these days.
Keep it up.
