You taught an "old dog" a new trick. Extending the section of the monopod and retracting it just a bit! Wow! Never thought about that...

After purchasing my Nikon D810 & working with my 70-200mm lens I realized I needed a monopod to assist in holding the bulk & weight shooting at events. I did take your recommendation and purchased this monopod. But I also matched it with the Sirui L SERIES MONOPOD TILT HEAD due to the fact all my cameras & zooms are set up with the RSS arch swiss system. I am very happy with this set up & quality of the gear. I do have a ball head for monopods, but just sayin' this tilt head is worth a look see. Thanks again Ken for offering us your expert sage gear reviews.

You should take a look the new Nikon z 7ii and 70-200 2.8S combo. It’s a bit lighter than the older one. That’s my favorite setup for weddings.

Just purchased the SIRUI P-326 and their Tilt Head to replace my aluminum Manfrotto / Tilt setup to support an incoming 300mm 2.6. I couldn't bring myself to spend 300+ for a hollow Carbon Fiber stick.

After your advise I bought it this morning! Very happy about it! When I told the Store clerk I was looking for the carbon one @ 99 Euro he said I was wrong. If I wanted a carbon, I had to spend at least 300 Euro. I said it was less and he checked the pricing 3 times again hahaha. Then I was def. sure it was an excellent buy! Thank you.... again! Greetings from The Netherlands.

I love it when you do videos on stuff I purchase before the video validating my "wise" purchase.....I had no clue what to look for in a monopod but dude at the camera store recommend this model so I snagged it. Glad I did. I noticed they make an aluminum version as well but this version is solid.

Agree. I have a couple of their carbon fibre video monopods and they are great. Better than Manfrotto. Their heads are good too... solid metal not plastic crap.

monopods are great i use my cheap targus everyday.i put a fluid head on it and i love it.i know this sounds stupid but i do my macro shots with the monopod attached.i usually go out and shoot for about 2 or 3 hours at a time and it really takes the load off.I've been looking for a decent monopod to upgrade to.I'll look into yours thanks.and your dead on about not opening the legs up all the way.its sturdier that way.even my cheapo doesn't flex.commonsense.

Casey Cornett waves back *~*~~*~ well, everyone loves this monopod, only a few idiots complain its not as stiff as a $400 Gitzo
but the damn Gitzo is amost TWICE the weight, and its sections are FAR thicker, which is nonsense OVERKILL :)

I have one of these myself, with a Gitzo G1178M ball head on top (when I was looking at monopods in my camera store it was a a combo they recommended ) and absolutely love it..strong yet lightweight like you say and more than enough for any of my camera / lens combos that I use (my biggest would be my D2x with a 150-500 mm lens )..excellent quality and great price..was so pleased with it that when I went for a good quality tripod I bought Sirui again..the N-3203X with their K-40X ball head..a slightly heavier set up but well worth it for the stability and weight capacity it offers (20 kilo's for the tripod and 33 kilo's for the ball head )..a rock solid combo to use especially for long exposure shots where you dont want any camera shake at all.if I ever get asked about what tripods/monopods I use I recommend Sirui for their quality and excellent value for money..I cant see myself using anything else.

I have a Camlink cmp2. It cost me less than $20, it's 170cm tall (66"), it has a foam grip, it weighs only 360 grams (12.7 oz). It has a retractable spike (or rather a retractable rubber foot!) Okay, it doesn't promise to support any more than 3 kg (6.6 pd), but my Canon Eos 70D with battery grip plus my biggest lens (Tamron 200-400mm f/5,6) weighs less than that. I think I'll pass on the Sirui.

Great review and demo. Who in the world has a 55lbs camera? I'd like to see pics of that. Not since the 1920s has a camera had to weigh so much.
I'm a big huge fan of monopods. I think that they are a must have. Great for places where you can't use a tripod and/or flash. But could use one. You can also slip the blessed things in your back pocket.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад

Jeff Bird well its absurd, but some pros actually throw their camera ON THE MONOPOLE and go around with it (i used to sometimes too), in which case that very thick wall thickness on the sections helps
but yes, nobody needs that much damn tolerance on their monopole for weight.

    Dear Ken
I've been following your You Tube channel for quite sometime and I have bought a few lens that you said were the cat's meow. And you were 100% correct and l love the AIS lens greatly thanks to you. I'm a professional photographer here in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia where I shoot commercial photography. I am originally from Seattle WA. I've been a Nikon shooter for years and years I use a D4s and a D 810. I really admire your intelligence and rational and we think similarly on many issues concerning these dim witts on RUclips who think they know everything about photography, but unless you been shot at or survived some of the assignments I've been on they are not qualified. My work has been published on NYT, Washington Post, Miami Herald, CNN, USA Today, BBC etc etc so I know what I'm talkin about. For us professional photojournalist getting published is everything thats our resume. I worked for AP, AFP, Far Eastern Economic Review and no one knows photography unless you worked with these publications. I've been shot at beat up etc all in the name of getting the pictures out so some fuck can read about it morning papers as they sit and have their coffee. Having said that can I give you a suggestion, your intelligence and reality is light years ahead of the common minions you rant about. The Jason's, Jared Polin's of the world are not going to get it. I want to continue to watch your video's but I think now is the time to give the bashing of others a rest. Jason is on the attack and I'm sure the rest will gang up and come after you. Your above them, therefore let them be. We the viewers are smart enough to know what's hip and what's bullshit. Even Chuck who befriended you bailed! Its a never ending battle and nobody is gonna win the war. Thanks for your suggestions and lets save $$$

John Ishii ive already let them be, they can spew whatever they want. Befriended? Ohhh, "not moved by praise nor blame",......when i said i only care about wisdom, i actually meant it.
I wont bend, or bow, or be puppet to or for anyone (not referring to you),.....so they can all hate or spew what they want.
Without mention of name however i will 'call out' insane lies and nonsense (such as filters not helping at all / protection).
well, nobody knows everything about photography, the topic is too broad, youre correct man!

I agree, you do not really need heavy load capacity. But, that Oben is just over 5 feet tall, which is far too short for people who are 6 feet tall. I am 6’4”, and there are not any other Oben models that are tall enough, most especially if you follow his recommendation to not fully extend the leg. I use a couple of Benro models.

I still like less sections that's why I bought the Gitzo GM2542! :P (By the way I only paid three times as much as this Sirui P-326 and it's load capacity is also three times as much.)
Where you're absolutely right you don't need more than this 10 kg load capacity of the Sirui ... ;) (Oh this "stupid" Gitzo only weights 50g more than the Sirui but gets about 10 cm higher than the Sirui.)
For me the Gitzo is worth the extra money. But everybody has to know whether to spend less or more on his/her gear! :D

Hello......just a point and shoot bum here. Just wanted to say thanks for all the great laughs and all the great info. If I am ever able to purchase more than what I have you certainly will have had an impact on my decision making. Over the years I have had Polaroids, Kodaks and Pentax. In fact , when I sold my Pentax I had left a roll of film inside. The back popped open while I was showing it to the buyer. The roll of film was TriXPan 400 I took of Robert Mills Architecture in Charleston, SC. Now I am relegated to the world of sony 5mp doodoo box and one of their "artistic?" pocket cameras. I know they're not real cameras, but what do you think of the coolpix p900 and hx400v? And does one have to subscribe and visit a web page to see any of your work? Luv ya man. Don't bark too loudly.

Great video as always. Very informative and helpful.
I have a question and you have always had both the knowledge and the willingness to help when we need it.
I shoot wildlife but I am new. I have a D500 (do to your reviews) and a Tamron 150-600 (I should have got the Nikon 200-500)
I shoot some landscape occasionally (with my Nikon 17-55 that I got because of you. Fantastic lens by the way)
But 90% to 95% is wildlife.
I will be able to get Either a tripod OR a monopod this year and then my budget is blown for about a year.
Taking in account of both versatility of the gear and the terrain that I will be hiking,
Oh Please way into this that I am 6'4" so I do have to consider the height of the support.
    What is my best option?
I think I will know the ball head to get with the next video but I am not sure what support fits best into my nitch.
Some say no support is necessary and handheld is the only way to go but I know enough now to know that I will need something. It appears to be fairly evenly split among wildlife photographers between monopod and Tripod.
This is why I need your help. The "experts" are inconclusive and only suggest only what they know, where you look at things from all angles and give advice from a knowledgeable standpoint.

Geez, I bought a SLIK and have no problems with it at all. Paid $44.00 on Amazon. My previous one was a Manfretto that I got at a estate sale for $8.00. It was weird, the sale had about 4 different Leica bodies, R-3, R-4 etc, a Nikon F5 and a bunch of good quality lenses, Mamiya RB67 with 2 lenses, strobes, Sunpak and Metz lights and all sorts of stuff and then there is this cheap Manfretto monopod sitting amongst all these things. They had a 622 but they wouldn't wait for me to go get batteries to test it, so I figured that they tested it and it failed.

$400 would buy you a month long rental of an apartment in southern Spain! To spend that on what is basically a telescopic stick seems irrational, unless you have a lottery win to flirt with. Even $150 seems lavish. My aluminium monopod cost about a $20, has click-to-lock fixings, a 90 degree hinged head and does its stabilising job just fine. I'm 6 feet tall, and it goes up to over my crown. Its strong enough to use as a stick when hiking. I'm obviously missing something.. perhaps it's wealth :)
