I had an elkhound for 11 years and he was the BEST. Baby Viggo passed in September from hemangiosarcoma and I still cry everyday.

    Absolutely the best kept secret!
My Elkhound, Tam, was with me for 14 years and was an incredible companion. It’s been over a decade since he passed but I still miss him. ❤

Hands down the best dog I have ever had. Gunner is 5 years old, and he is so loyal and so loveable. Incredible with the kids. Just Incredible in so many ways.

My family had two elkhounds while I was growing up, Nikki and Josh. Both were great loyal family dogs and excellent companions in the woods.

I've met a few well bred ones and they have all been great dogs! I haven't met any backyard bred ones because I usually interact with different breeds at shows. But I definitely was impressed by the few I have met.

My cousin had one. I loved his looks but he was pretty old when they got him, so he passed after a few years. Didn’t really get to see his personality much, but he seemed pretty calm and easy-going.

Hi all! I'm trying to help out our pup. Our Elkhound started having seizures just before her 4th birthday. Has anyone else encountered this? We were told it's not common with the breed, but also not unheard of. We only give her chicken and ground beef cooked together in a crock pot, some raw pumpkin on top, and some fruit throughout the day. I'm wondering if changing her diet would help, but not sure what to do. Any insight would be appreciated! Thank you!

Thank you for breeding for health over markings and "look".

This is a common dog for moose hunting in Scandinavia.

The 2 breeds that are hardly being looked at are the weggies and otterhound. Not sure why bother these dogs are great companion animals, bother are good for families, but always pick a raw food diet, (boiled meat, boiled carrots/peas and and egg) that's it and you can freeze it or can ot. A retired veterinarian told me to do this, and my dog is 7 years old and has the energy of a 1 year old. My dog also does swimming as exercise because it's good on the dogs joints and it perfect in the summer

Akita? Their body structure is SO different than an Akita. Smaller too...rather more compact than an Akita!
