George Benson's 1978 version of "On Broadway" is one of his catalog's most beloved and dynamic songs. George tells Questlove Supreme about how the song came to be despite much reluctance and trepidation and reports of it being erased upon recording. This story is as colorful as the masterpiece it describes. This is a clip from the full interview.

My 1st time hearing George Benson was "On Broadway". One of the most electric performances on tape. On fire!

I can’t think of another artist singing On Broadway, other than George Benson. He’s also a great guy! True story: in 1999, after killing it at the Barbados Jazz Festival, he loaned his band’s equipment to EWF, because their equipment and costumes were lost/delayed in shipping to the island. They then killed it in his honor. It’s a pity that that festival is no longer.
