Small Drums, big Room!

- Playing my Pearl Midtown Drumkit in an Italian garage, where I just did a session with my mobile recording setup!
The kit has small drumsizes but it sounds amazing: 16" Bassdrum, 10" Racktom, 13" Standtom and a 13" Snaredrum.
I normally use it for gigs in small locations like Hotel bars.
The Cymbals are Sabian HH Remaster: 15"Hats, 20"Crash as Ride, 18"Crash
It is recorded with only 4 Mics on the Drumset and 2 in the room.
My mobile recording setup is an Audient ASP880 preamp going into an Audient iD14 interface. ...and my laptop, of course ;) As Headphone Preamp I use a Presonus HP60.
Mics:
Shure Beta 52a (Bassdrum), Sm57 (Snare), Gefell m930 (Overheads), Oktava M012 (Room)
No Eq, no compression, just levelled and panned!

would have been a much better title for this vid

The magic of actual real Room reverb.
Yes, I feel the same! There´s a special magic to record drums in a great sounding and inspiring evironment. For me it starts during the performance. "play the room" is an important slogan for me and so my performance depends on what I am hearing.
However =) Thanks for your comment and happy holidays!
@@matthiasbauerlein8088 totally agree, people say you can record dry drums and then mic a speaker in an ambient room to achieve a similar sound but as you say you change your playing dynamics for the room. same with DI ing guitars to reamp them later, the amp affects the playing!
@@DanielS10291 All of this. The room is always the most important part of the drum sound.
Can you do big drums, small room next?
SMall drums small room. Motown
@@bidensciownworidbroughttoy4218 ..how about Music For The Recently Deceased by I Killed The Prom Queen? I don’t know too, too much about room size in recordings but the drums on that record sound absolutely enormous.

@@TunnelJumper hey, some real dirty metal and not overproduced EZ-drummer core. I'm down!
If Bonham played an eighteen inch kick, thats what it'd sound like
Open handed player using Moeller wrist technique.Nothing like bonzo apart from that snare tuning.
*sixteen inch
But yes
@@weareallbeingwatched4602 that's not really the point Mr. Freedom was making.
If Bonham played an 18" kick, it would be tuned higher than that rack tom.
It is not only the room which sounds good... it is also the drummer! Damn good playing!
Thank you very much, Christian! =)
whatever those hi-hats are, they sound awesome
thanks, man! those are Sabian HH remaster 15"

Nice sound. I actually didn’t noticed that is was a small drum big was focused on the big space 😆
proof that tuning is everything
It sounds beautiful! The kick slapback adds an extra mojo.
Thank you, Danijel! It feels absolutely great hearing this room, while playing the drums! =)
Love my Pearl Midtown. That little kit does it all and doesn't break the bank.
The beat you're playing reminds of the Drummer who played with TOTO Jeff Pocarro !Thanks again !
Thank you! I´m a big Jeff Procaro fan ;)
Me too
I find it shameful that neither of you know how to spell his last name correctly.
Nice drumming. Even better capitalisation of the title!
thanks mitch =)
That room verb is friggin amazing
That's one of the best snare sounds I've ever heard
Thank you Mike!
Thats a set worth taking to a big gig. Sounds amazing and of course the sound engineer plays a big role in making these drums sing
Solid sound!

That kit sounds absolutely amazing for a $500 kit
Ya got the groove brother 👍🇨🇦
Thx Bro =)
My type of snare sound 👍
thanks =)
That snare cured my depression.
Mine, too! 🤩
this truly is the only way to correctly and accurately record drums. there's nothing better than a big empty room with no carpeting.
ocho, thank you! you´re right! in my opinion there´s one other important point: the regals in this hall act aas diffusers and make the sound very rich and open! =)
@@matthiasbauerlein8088 agreed. very nice.
Just from that little sample one can tell your a world class drummer with chops. Dude, you could make a kiddie set sound good. No doubt.
Thank you for your kind words! i really appreciate this!
I had a Mapex Voyager kit for a long time with an 18 inch kick. Sound techs often commented on how it quick it was to get sounding perfect at venues.
Amazing sound
This sounds so cool!
Big sound. It has that Ludwig punch. Surprisingly nice
What I’ve been saying, room is the most important factor for recording a drum sound
That sound is amazing.
Thanks! =)
i dont know how to play drums but this sounds so good
thank you =)
Awesome sounding drums!
good sound !!
Nothing screams rock 'n' roll like a well-ironed shirt.
amazing sound!!!
This kit deserves an 8 inches tom add-on.
Good Idea =)
Real reverb. The goosebumps. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Very nice man
thx =)
Sounds delicious 🔥🔥
The best sounding room I ever played in was a warehouse similar to this 👍
I think the shelves did an amazing job as diffusors. So there aren´t any bad build ups in any frequency ranges!
nice and groovy
Thx, Oscar!
=)
That bath tub had a secret mic lol
haha =) this is a great idea for the next time :D
That sounded huge!!!!
Yeah man, small kits rule!
I do appreciate a good shuffle.
What a clean sounding kit, really nice room reverb too
The only problem with this video was that it was too short. 😁
Great sounding kit. Really has me starting to consider getting a bop.
Hard concrete floor, steel cladding on the roof and concrete block wall will give huge sound with tones bouncing around everywhere but people are so used to hearing dead, studio , over compressed drum sounds they have no idea what real, undampend ,open drums sound like.
I Sounds very good! I was interested in purchasing one those Pearl Midtown Kits actually , definitely might do so! I have a Ludwig BreakBeat By QuestLove Kit and it's somewhat similar except for the snare is a 14 inch, I like the sound of the Midtown snare! Thanks for sharing your video! 🤘🏾🎼🍷
Hi Adrian! I got that kit for small gigs like in hotelbars. It was very important to have small shells because of the volume and the portability as well. And you don´t need that much space on small stages. When I got this kit, i was very suprised how good it sounds! The bassdrum has a very nice and warm tone and the snare is very crisp and fast! everything needs less energy to put in. So you can play soft whithout sounding to small very easy =)
This video is a spontaneous demonstration of how these drums sound in a big room. I usually play lots of brushes with this kit.
Greez and thanks for the compliment!
Those acoustics though...Yummy
Sounds fantastic!
"All I wanna do when I wake up in the mornin' is see your eyes"
Wow, sounds incredible!
Sounds great !
You should have played longer. Good playing!
Thank you! Next time I will memorize that =)
You "normally use it for gigs in small locations like Hotel bars," which means that you know how to play drums to match your group and venue. My corner of the audio world has good amateurs playing loudly in venues too small for it such that the common technique is to put them in a booth (very small room) to control their volume. You can control their mic'ing such that they have the quality of a recording, but you lose the "live" sound of them actually being in the room with everyone else. I love a drummer you don't have to hide.
Hey Jim! Thank you for this comment, this is a very interesting topic!
"Play the room" is an important slogan for me. but another important point is, that as a player I don´t want to feel like inhibited. So when I´m in a venue, where I have to be aware of my volume, I rather bring smaller drums and quiet cymbals. Using very light sticks and muffling are other important things helping me a lot beside playing softer.
Maybe I can help you and your drummers with these tips?
Happy Holiday!
That open grip though...👀
Suddenly I no longer want to play the high hat with my right hand.
Playing left handed on a right handed kit but still sounding awesome .. nice !
I learned open handed playing when I was nineteen. To me it´s more comfortable and my right hand has enough space for hitting the snare!
@@matthiasbauerlein8088 Not knocking you at all brother. I've been playing for 28 years more or less and there are times when i play open handed, but for the majority i cross over so that my right hand can lead around the kit .. but all good brother, you sound amazing !!
open handed! nice!
Grazie, Andrea! =)
Plot twist: its actually just a very large man on regular drums.

Until I was 19 I played my HH and my Ride Cymbals with my right hand.
Than I got into Open Handed Playing and played my HH with the left hand and my ride cymbal with the ride hand.
Than, about 3 years ago, I decided to put my ride cymbal on the left side and to play it also with the left hand. For me now it´s the way I feel most comfortable.
But you see, it is some kind of a journey.
And we will see, were it will lead me =)

No, I did´nt! There were actually just 4 Mics on the drumset and two in the room! =)
@@matthiasbauerlein8088 ah.I saw a vid or two where peeps would wrap hose in a circle loosely around kit and tape a mike in one end, leaving the other open.Weird natural echo and verb.
@@geraldfriend256 Yes, I saw examples like this, too! But I either would try it, when I´m in a small room to get some kind of a natural ambience. I think I even saw it with trash cans!
Reverb is excellent. You had more reverb durin mixing or is that natural?
Hi Federico! No, I did nothing for this video. No eq, no compression, no reverb. I just leveled and panned the signals. I was so excited by this room sound, that I wanted to share this!
It sounds superb and your playing is excellent too. Thanks for the answer and thanks for share this.
Nice!!!
Top !!!!!
Sounds fantastic! Excellent capture! Was this space used on a track? If so I'd like to hear it. Actually I'm sure a lot of us would. Thanks. Great work.
Hi Michael! Yes, you are hearing 6 microphones. Bassdrum, Snaredrum, 2 Overheads and 2 Mics on the other side near the bath tub.
In this video there´s no eq, no compression and no virtual reverbs. I just leveled and panned the signals!
Thank you for the compliment!
What do you want to hear? you mean JUST the room, without direct signals?
