Yeah, it's amazing that people consider the most soulless of music, K-Pop to be "artistic". Like, do you not understand that every facet of those boy bands are crafted by corporate overlords to sell products to dumb fans? Those "idols" are just mouthpieces. Every single word they say, everything they do, down to how they dress is controlled by their label. Black metal is one of the only genres that you can find true passion. I mean I love BM, but I'm not a fan of the old school corpse paint look. But is it 1000x more artistic than K-Pop? Fuck yeah it is.
A genre where pretty much every 'artist' is picked for their looks and dancing ability by corporate suits and every lyric is written for them, all in order to extract as much money from the pockets of silly girls like this one.

Same thing in black metal music : when you say "I don't get it, this looks excessive to me" and so on, the artists are succeding at their intent. Their shows are meant to be something that blows up your mind and makes you go like "wtf is that?". It's not happy sounding music. The reason why we like this? The fact it's fucking extreme and "in your face", it's love it or hate it. Also, it's an acquired taste, I used not to get It too. As a fan of early gorgoroth style and early norwegian black metal, their self titled song is actually amazing. Its so melodic and beautiful yet very dark, but only if you liked heavy music to begin with. Its a metal genre with a lot of raw emotion. Bands such as Deafheaven is one example.
FYI the singer is both gay and vegan. :D This is arguably one the best song of the genre, with one the best ending riffs/climax in any black metal song there is. Personally i find the sheep head and the cruxifiction to be real good for a live black metal band, it's their imagery. You don't go to a black metal concert to see flowers. it's not because you don't understand something or don't want to like it that it becomes bad. A lot of people out there loves Gorgoroth and loves what Gaahl have done in the music world for the last 25 years.
On a real level, Gaahl may be one of the most philosophical, intellectual musicians I have ever heard speak on religion, life, human nature, and the universe. It would be an honor to meet him. Also, Gorgoroth is pretty gnarly.

It is a comparison established in the Bible itself, when Jesus declares himself to be the "Good Shepherd" and calls its followers, literally, his "sheeps". The sheep represents for these fellas, on a symbolic level, the simple-minded folk who blindly follows the Judeo-Christian-Islamic faiths, leaving behind the use of his critical thinking, rational capacities and questioning intellect. Gorgoroth (amidst many other Black Metal bands, and Left-Hand Path religious people) puts in contrast the symbolism of the Goat. @GiddyKitty the sheep skulls are a bastardization of a sermon Christ gave in the bible. In the sermon, Christ referred to the sheep as his followers. So the use of sheep skulls and sacrificing sheep and all that evil-doing to sheep in black metal is part of the aesthetic because it’s supposed to be a mockery of Christianity. The black and white makeup is also part of the black metal aesthetic because it’s supposed to make the performers look corpse-like or inhuman. Fun fact, the makeup they use is referred to as ‘corpse paint’. PS, those aren’t real crucifixions. If they were real, their hands and feet would be tied or nailed to the cross with absolutely no ease. They’d actually be completely pinned to the cross without the possibility to relax at all or breathe properly.

Norwegian black metal started most likely in the mid 80’s, it’s unclear if there was a “founder” as such but Euronymous from Mayhem is often credited. Mayhem as a whole would explain a lot about the genre, i recommend reading up on them if you’re curious

About your question about the Sheep skulls. For Gorgoroth (according to Gaahl´s own words), the Sheep represents "The Flock", the total sum of Christians and the similar-minded followers of the "Right Hand Path" Religions, which are Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It is a comparison established in the Bible itself, when Jesus declares himself to be the "Good Shepherd" and calls its followers, literally, his "sheeps". The sheep represents for these fellas, on a symbolic level, the simple-minded folk who blindly follows the Judeo-Christian-Islamic faiths, leaving behind the use of his critical thinking, rational capacities and questioning intellect.
Gorgoroth (amidst many other Black Metal bands, and Left-Hand Path religious people) puts in contrast the symbolism of the Goat. The Goat comes to represent the polar opposite of the Sheep, as the Goat, historically associated with Satanism since the Middle Ages, represents the individualistic person, who via the exercise of his Free Will, questions the validity of the Judeo-Christian dogma, rejecting it in order to follow his own path...

@GiddyKitty the sheep skulls are a bastardization of a sermon Christ gave in the bible. In the sermon, Christ referred to the sheep as his followers. So the use of sheep skulls and sacrificing sheep and all that evil-doing to sheep in black metal is part of the aesthetic because it’s supposed to be a mockery of Christianity. The black and white makeup is also part of the black metal aesthetic because it’s supposed to make the performers look corpse-like or inhuman. Fun fact, the makeup they use is referred to as ‘corpse paint’.
PS, those aren’t real crucifixions. If they were real, their hands and feet would be tied or nailed to the cross with absolutely no ease. They’d actually be completely pinned to the cross without the possibility to relax at all or breathe properly.

Norwegian black metal started most likely in the mid 80’s, it’s unclear if there was a “founder” as such but Euronymous from Mayhem is often credited. Mayhem as a whole would explain a lot about the genre, i recommend reading up on them if you’re curious
