    This is part 2 of my look at Metal Gear Solid, first part's here: • The Rise of Metal Gear...
    We also did Metal Gear Rising: • ACTION FOR CHADS - Met...
    We're putting a wrap on Metal Gear Solid with the final 3 mainline titles: MGS4, Peace Walker, and MGS5. Having left a lot of my schedule to patrons since January, and considering Kingdom Hearts, I've covered a lot of things I never would have touched without prompt, and come to love a lot of old series. I'm still a Snake Eater stan, but thoroughly enjoyed 2+5, and would gladly try Peace Walker and 1 again. 4 as well, if I skipped the cutscenes

    I think kojima’s strong want to make a movie went from emulating them with games due to their long form style of entertainment, to being able to actually make movies and the series shifted into his real ideas coupled with company meddling.

      Also, maybe no restraint on part from the writing Kojima makes by himself. In the first three games, there were co-writers that may have made the writing better for those games but afterwards when they left or passed away, all the writing was done by Kojima and because of that it may have become a bit more ridiculous than usual when it came too the plotting of those future games.

    1:45 “woopsie, it’s incredible” is the best way to describe this series. Back when they were first making the game the studio and hideo Kojima knew the expectations were so low by their supervisors that they were allowed to just make it whatever they wanted because they knew they didn’t need to drive sales since it would be a financial flop. Then the thing that made everyone love metal gear was how wacky and unique it was because it was Kojima’s mostly unfiltered image.

    MGS V... That quarantine moment.... definitely one of the best, hardest hitting moments ever in gaming. Shame the game was missing its actual end missions... resulted in a rather odd feeling once I realized there was no final mission to end things. In the end, one of the most memorable games for both the best... and the worst... reasons. But still one I'll recommend to almost anyone.

      Yeah, the whole Konami vs. Kojima thing basically has to be explained to anyone thinking of playing it. Set the expectation that there is no fully satisfying conclusion to it.
      Still one of my favorite games, and would have been that much more incredible if Konami left Kojima well enough alone, with a bigger pile of cash, to fully realize the game. Hearing the rumors about it from ex-developers about what his vision was, was so fucking cool. For example, one of the big ones, was that I think for Chapter 4, it would have been set in Russia, and would not be wilderness, but a series of military bases and towns, fully ramping up the difficulty of the game toward the last chapter.

    That quarantine scene still makes me tear up a bit. I went through a completely non-lethal playthrough, and spent dozens of hours just capturing soldiers, hunting down the best of the best to deploy on my base. I assigned them to different facilities, sent them on missions, and proudly watched when the saluted me whenever I passed by.
    Having to kill those same soldiers, was one of the most powerful moments I've had in a game. Each pull of the trigger felt terrible... but to end it quickly, I went for a headshot every time. And the rest who saw me kill their comrades, even though they were startled, just saluted and waited next in line as I aimed my gun at then. Up until then, I hadn't killed a single person. By the time I walked out, having massacred much of my own team, I had never felt so much animosity toward a video game villain in my life. It was a really effective scene, and years later, I still remember it vividly.

    • @night1952
      @night1952 2 года назад +6

      All i got from that scene was "God dammit, why the fuck did i waste all this time recruiting these idiots" Mother base is a massive nuisance that gets in the way of normal gameplay thanks to how poorly implemented it is, so when i was forced to make my numbers go down just so i could grind them back up i wasn't sad, i was frustrated.

    • @PixelHeroViish
      @PixelHeroViish 2 года назад +5

      @J Prez Except you don't have to grind at all unless you're going for 100% or the final ending, something that was changed in the remaster and is therefore fully optional. Though I don't know if getting soldiers is optional in MGSV, so it depends I guess

    • @PixelHeroViish
      @PixelHeroViish 2 года назад +2

      @J Prez Well that's personal opinion, I generally dislike having to redo things but finding the ways spells act under different circumstances (the Dark Hand uppercut, for example) made it more fun to try and Style on bosses, yes in The og RepliCant and Gestalt you had to do a lot of busy work to get Ending D, but in the remaster you'll have to do only 3 Quests that aren't too bad and beat the game twice, then get the last two endings, it's not too terribly bad, so long as you try to make it fun for yourself, which isn't for everybody. That and you get a completely different view of what's happening and then MORE insight on playthrough 3, it's just a matter of if you're willing to repeat what you already did. Point is, taking the originals aside, NieR isn't THE grindiest Game ever and saying it is is simply untrue and feels more like a personal issue rather than fact

    • @PixelHeroViish
      @PixelHeroViish 2 года назад +1

      @J Prez You literally called it the grindiest game ever, you Dingus, did you forget what you typed initially or something?
      Yes I do indeed dislike it when people treat one game unfairly and put another higher just because they like certain aspects more
      The spells may be simplistic but they serve a very clear purpose and you can mix and match them depending on what you need or want and while you CAN do everything with Dark Blast and Dark Lance, you don't have to, that's the point. It's like the Kirby games, it works for those who wanna keep it simple or those willing to experiment. The same can be said about MGSV, you can just go with the bare basics and never branch out in gameplay, this doesn't make a game bad and just means you didn't choose to do it. How do you not realize that the game you prefer so much is just as susceptible to what you said as NieR is?
      As for it not "being the player's job" to make a game fun, that's not what I meant and I'm curious how that was your Take-away because what I did mean is that if you enjoy experimenting with different ways of using what you have, a game is more fun. The Devs clearly intended you to play around with it, because I wouldn't have figured out some spell variants had I not tried to mess around. The Devs made a thing, I liked it and found a more fun way of using what they made, that's literally it
      And once again, playing through the 2nd half is soothed slightly by actually getting new info we didn't have before, whether or not THAT is a good thing is subjective however, because on one hand it can be annoying, but on the other hand it only works in a game like this and for what it's trying to do it was a good attempt. NieR Automata for example tried that too and it wasn't AS effective

    • @PixelHeroViish
      @PixelHeroViish 2 года назад +1

      @J Prez I'm starting to feel you're purposefully ignoring my points, because there's no way you read my paragraphs and still didn't understand the basic gist. The spells all do damage, yes, but that's not the MAIN function of each one. It's similar to KH2 where they have a basic function, but with some brain work you can make it useful in situations outside of its intended use, it's just a thing that takes the player actually wanting to use it. Your point about only a few spells being useful is also moot because once again it depends on the player wanting to use other things, just because you didn't want to, or didn't like when you did, doesn't mean they're fundamentally worthless because I on the contrary use every spell I have when I feel like it and enjoy it
      .
      The same goes for Metal Gear, I CAN use only the Tranq gun but that doesn't make everything else worthless just because I choose not to use them or dislike them. It's weird that you have this idea that one two games do almost the exact same thing and yet it's somehow unacceptable in one but innovative in the other
      .
      I didn't attempt a "No u" and the fact that that's what you thought it was says more about you, if anything
      .
      The reason I brought up Kirby games was purely the experimentation factor, there wasn't really a reason for you bringing up the 2nd repeat again other than you wanting to be obnoxious
      .
      And no, NieR Automata didn't do it as well because we get barely any more info on the actual Lore/Story for the machines because by that point we already know that there's more to them than we first thought, due to Pascal and his village clearly being the odd ones. That doesn't make it useless of course, because I enjoyed seeing why robots did what they did

    The thing I hated the most about MGSV is how slow it felt. It's the first Metal Gear Solid game I've ever played, and I could never bring myself to finish it.
    "So, you want to head off immediately to the next fun, explosive, narratively interesting mission, right? Sure thing. But wait! You should complete these side missions before that, or you might miss out on key gameplay features. Everything done? Great! It's time to go! BUT WAIT! You have just unlocked some upgrades that could be really useful for the next mission, but you can't use them right away. Why don't you play some more side ops in the meanwhile? ...Alright, all your new pieces of equipment are ready to use. Time to advance in the main story! *BUT WAIT!* You need to complete this bunch of filler, yet mandatory missions before you can go on. Oh, it seems like you've done every -bloated chore- necessary bit of gameplay you had to. Very well, have your reward!
    *B U T W A I T !* You can't just go around killing soldiers with your newly unlocked sniper rifle or grenade launcher! You need to scan them all so that you can isolate the most skilled ones and bring them back to your base alive, or you won't be able to upgrade your equipment further!"
    I remember the first time I played Dishonored 2, I dropped it too after a while because I was trying too hard to play ghost/pacifist due to the fact that the game quite openly told me to. However, I picked it up again after a while, started a whole new playthrough, ignored every single character telling me how bad I was for killing magical terrorists, and had much more fun than my first experience. I tried doing something similar with MGSV, but to no avail. Sure, I got further than I did back when I was trying to wage a global war without victims, but I once again got to the point where I felt like the game just wasn't worth my time. In my opinion, half of its content could be cut and not only it wouldn't be any worse - it'd be a straight-up better game.

      @@Rodrigo24717 You can also beat Dark Souls at level 1 with no equipment, but that doesn't mean you should. Now, MGSV is not an RPG and there's not nearly as much focus on stats, but many upgrades - especially weapon ones - can make a huge difference in the playstyle you'll adopt. The same difference between having a silenced sniper rifle or an unsilenced one, a lethal or a non-lethal one, or even having one at all. You _can_ beat the game without all of those things, but you'd have to approach it very differently, and it's not as much a matter of difficulty as it is one of playstyle. You can think of it like a fighting game - you can technically do everything with the main character, but that doesn't mean you'll enjoy their style. My thought process when I prepare for a mission can be something like _"Alright, I'm going to face heavily armored vehicles, so I'd better bring more powerful explosives._ I could _go in there with what I already have, but I might regret not waiting this couple hours to finish that upgrade"_

      Impossible sadly, MGS4 is one of the few games that truly maximised & relied on the PS3's powerful but tricky cell architecture as well as the built-in PS1 emulator. A port is technically possible, like any game, but the amount of resources to make MGS4 work would be astronomical & there's also the issue that the game doesn't even run very well on modern PCs via the PS3 emulator.
      It's unfortunate, because MGS4's platform exclusivity during PlayStation brand's lowest point is a large part of the reason why it's disliked. Most people haven't even played it & only ever heard of its faults secondhand or from biased news sources. I'd like to think Konami will eventually relent & properly port the series to next gen systems, PC & Switch to rake in some extra cash, which would redeem 4 on a massive scale, but I doubt they plan on touching the series ever again.

    With the bosses becoming less distinct, I feel that it was due to mgs4's nightmarish world of warfare becoming so uniform and streamlined it even effected the MGS BOSS WACKY PACK DU JOUR . Kojima's understandably wonky attempt to tie two different lineages and resolve the plots shows its age, but snake and ocelot fighting at the end could be a metaphor for war's futility. two men with insurmountable body counts prolonging each other's life mid fight to kill each other atop a giant war machine. And on a more cynical note, gen x snake aging and dying faster than his silent generation father hits a cord with me, cuz I see gen y'ers seem to be aging faster due to stress in a world that doesn't treat them with respect yet demands so much from them. I really like your analysis of the mgs series, cuz you do touch on themes, you don't focus on metal gear as an experience, and more like a game, the same way in mgs big boss was venerated as a messiah but never realized he was just a person with flaws at the end of the day.

      The misinterpration of The Boss' ideals by Zero and Big Boss could also be an allussion to the fans not understanding the message of MGS 2 (which was supoosed to be the ending of the story) nor what Kojima wanted to say. Zero made of BB an idol with in Eva's words "lies and a
      exaggeration" just like the fans do with the story and BB himself. "Sounds like a religion" answers Solid Snake.
      The fact that Snake is old, tired and basically dying could also be an allusion to the saga being too old to keep going and a metaphor of Kojima being tired of the saga already. That's why Snake is put to rest at the end of the story.
      "The world would be better off without snakes..."
      I still think it's done with a lot of respect and care, though.

      Suddenly MGS4 titling Snake as "Old Snake" seems that much more deliberate. Kojima subliminally feeding us his opinion on how he has come to view his creation, without necessarily reading as an outright dis. More of a veiled plea to let it die gracefully.

    When it comes to MGS4 I can totally see why many don't like it or why many see it as the turning point where Metal Gear lost its spark. However, I could not disagree more with these notions. MGS4 is a ridiculous behemoth of a game that embraces and exaggerates everything the franchise is known for, and I am all for it. The game does not give a single shit about anyone who complained about MGS cutscenes being too long or the games being too full of themselves or the absolutely apeshit series of events throughout. The game takes everything that makes Metal Gear what it is in stride and aims to deliver the most satisfying finale to its world and characters it possibly could. The stakes are at their absolute highest. set-pieces and action sequences are at their most intense, and Solid Snake is at his absolute peak in terms of character development and sheer badassery. The themes of legacy, losing one's place in a rapidly advancing world, and a responsibility to finish what you start and leave the world better than when you entered it are inspiring and emotionally moving. It is the absolute definition of fulfilling to me. That's not even to mention the ridiculous level of fanservice which, while quite on-the-nose, never fails to make me giddy.
    The elephant in the room is obviously that Kojima didn't originally want to make MGS4 and was pressured into it through some seriously shitty means, and it's also abundantly clear that it was a draining process for him. However, I cannot convince myself for the life of me that the game is somehow fueled by self-hatred or lacks passion. I see the exact opposite. I see a game that Kojima poured his absolute all into for the sake of giving fans the time of their lives. It was even mentioned recently that Kojima looks back at MGS4 fondly and is really proud of what he created. I'm sure MGS4's development was incredibly stressful and exhausting but never could I ever call it anything other than a labor of love.
    MGS4 is far from perfect, I have my own gripes with it such as the weaker emphasis on traditional Metal Gear stealth and certain story contrivances, but the game is my favorite game of all time for a reason. It rewards your commitment to the franchise and its characters so consistently and intensely that it's impossible for me not to feel overwhelmed with satisfaction and a twinge of sadness seeing it all come to an end.

      I agree with so many of your points. When I finished all of them my conclusion was ... “It’s just a game”.... that didn’t take anything away.. it made it grand. I feel like Hideo was always a few steps ahead. When he describes 4 does that not sound exactly like the situation Hideo found himself in? I think 4 was preparing us for the industry itself in a Hideo way.

      It panders to nostalgia in an unironic way, which is ironically at odds with the series's tendency to deconstruct such things. It became what it was trying to intelligently stray away from. This is best exemplified by MGS2, which it acknowledges is at its core a retread of MGS1. But it does so in order to explore what it means to relive something through fresh scenarios as well as a means to deconstruct our reliance on such nostalgia (take one look at the discourse over Snake not being the MC to get his point).
      MGS4 just plays the nostalgia as straight as a modern day Disney remake. Its there on a surface level completely saturated and unmistakable. It only exists to pander, to get long time fans giddy and for them to wet their own pants (yes, intended reference). Its not there to explore a concept or to deconstruct anything. Its just "hey, remember this character? Not much reason for her to be here, but cool aint it?"

    • @jman2001jt
      @jman2001jt 2 года назад +7

      @@PathBeyondTheDark the Shadow Moses sequence is a perfect example of how MGS4 DOES commentate of the concept of nostalgia. You return the island, and it’s just as you remember it, but everything is cold and dead. The cameras fallen to the ground and shattered, the power not working, the glaciers melting. It’s a relic of the past, just like Old Snake, and like the Metal Gear franchise. MGS4 is about something old and past its prime making one final hurrah before finally embracing oblivion. MGS4 is about fanservice and spectacle, but it’s not pointless. It’s a celebration of the franchise’s achievements and a way to close the book on it. It’s about closure more than anything. You can argue that the series doesn’t NEED closure, and keeping it open ended is preferable, but IMO giving something a definitive ending is far more impactful.

    Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 are so memorable and iconic... and I despise how all Metal Gear discussion will forever be tainted by MGS4 pointlessly attempting to answer questions that were purposely written to be open-ended and *not* meant to be answered.
    I love this series, but man is there a lot of dumb shit you've gotta sift through at times to reach the good stuff. At least it got a phenomenal send-off with Revengance, both in terms of gameplay and story. Seriously, Revengance is very well-written, and it kind of sucks how the memers cover up the fact that its a great story by puking all over it with their vapid meme-posting online. Much like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, really.

      Agreed. I believe in interviews he talked about how Snake continued to fight despite his condition because that is what he wanted to pass on to future generations. The idea of an unyielding hero.
      Kojima would probably deny it, but he very much wrote himself as Snake, given how similar their circumstances are in MGS4 (despite the obvious soldier background and the like). The story makes it clear that Snake could walk away at any point and that there are those who would carry the torch for him, but both doesn't know anything else, is too stubborn, and doesn't want to do that so long as he has the ability remaining to do it himself.
      It's pretty damn pretentious, but it makes it clear how the man felt about the series that was his baby. The microwave chamber showcases the metaphoric lengths he would go to to see it through to the end, up to and including the evils of Konami assuming direct control of it in the end.
      People give too much of Metal Gear's success to Kojima alone, but it's still hard to watch what Konami did to him. It's so vindictive what they did to the franchise immediately after his departure that it seems they were intentionally rubbing his face in their "victory." At least the guy bounced back with Death Stranding... to mixed results.

    25:17 for anyone who didn’t know, this was a direct result of Konami rushing Kojima and team to release the game early.
    Ever wonder where the giant tunnel behind the Serrak Power Plant goes? Ever wonder where the elevator goes down at OKB-0? They were connected, with a massive semi-underground base between them. The original plan for that Jeep ride, was Skull Face would take Venom back there and show Venom that base. It’s where he was making the Vocal Chord Parasite, as well as more Sehalanthropus’s being assembled.
    The silence was a direct result of them having to cut out the dialogue of Skull Face telling Venom about his base.
