      and who tremble at my word.
      But whoever sacrifices a bull
      is like one who kills a person,

      is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
      whoever makes a grain offering
      is like one who presents pig’s blood,
      and whoever burns memorial incense
      is like one who worships an idol.
      They have chosen their own ways,
      and they delight in their abominations;
      so I also will choose harsh treatment for them
      and will bring on them what they dread.
      For when I called, no one answered,
      when I spoke, no one listened.

    I grew up in a semi devout Irish Catholic family in a predominantly Irish and Italian neighborhood . My grandma on my moms side I was extremely close with and she went to church almost every day. They helped her find a new apartment near the church that was a million times better in neighborhood (she was taking a 45 min ride on public transport to get to church every day) , a fraction of the cost (it was specifically for older people on fixed incomes), and in center city (she never got a license in her life). Her best friend was a nun, SisterAgnes. Going to Catholic school growing up it was so cool at the time (like 10) to see this nun who cursed, was funny, and not held above but rather just a hilarious friend of my grandma.
    On the other hand, at my grade school (Pre K to 8th) there was a priest in charge, Monsignor Heron. He was a very aloof person and not friendly in the slightest. He had a Benz and a BMW. When being ordained a nun must give up any and all money, properly, etc “vow of poverty “, priests do not.
    Turns out when I was like 12 he passed away from cancer. They held an emergency meeting in the church a few weeks later and asked every parishioner to come. Turned out (surprise!😏) the Monsignor used the church and school money as his own and bought numerous luxury vehicles, luxury beachfront condo in Hawaii, condo in Vail for skiing, and it goes on. The meeting wasn’t to apologize. The meeting was basically a “we may have to close the school and who knows what will happen to the children...” type guilt trip and wanted everyone to pay back to cover all of his debts while continuing to pay the mandatory amount to send kids to school .

    It's very very important to remember that the midieval times were a time of historical illiteracy. The vast VAST majority of our literature and first hand accounts of the time were written by the rich and the wealthy who were under a tighter scrutiny by the church than the average person. Not that the average joe wasn't entirely free from the church's power but he was much less watched and observed by it and much more free to be skeptical of the church's claimed authority over the hereafter. Martin Luther's problems with the practices of the church were hardly brand new in thought, the difference is he came from within it.

Since salvation is a free gift, you can choose to turn it down all you want.

      no, that's manipulation in a nutshell.
      from governments to youtube videos and their comment sections, you'll find it.
      most wars are fought over lands and resources, not religion.
      more people die from atheism and lack of moral structure than the oppsite.
      a cult of personality isn't a religion, though it can trigger a similar fervor.
      and genocide can happen from something as athestic as population control, or basic domination of land, like mongols razing a city because they wouldn't surrender to the horde, or caesar waging war against the gauls.
      if religion was erased, i do believe genocide, war, greed and corruption would still exist.
      and chauvinism, in the WEST, comes only from that bible nonsense? really? ... So loving one's own nation (blood) to the point where one hates all other nations comes, in the west, only from the bible? a word that is derived from a common french name used in an 1830s play that describes a loyalty to Napoleon, who conquered lands and made war in the wake of the french enlightenment? the enlightenment that hated religion and beheaded a whole bunch of folks and commited genocide against the french catholics in the war of the vendee?

      My bad. I took 'chauvinism' to imply the whole "men are superior/better than women' trope that's found throughout bible mythos. Nationalistic chauvinism
      " 1830s play that describes a loyalty to Napoleon, who conquered lands and made war in the wake of the french enlightenment? the enlightenment that hated religion and beheaded a whole bunch of folks and commited genocide against the french catholics in the war of the vendee?"
      Napoleon was raised Catholic, and although an argument could be made that he didn't remain one (the argument is that he was really a Deist to most historians), he certainly used religion to his advantage to garner support for his war machine and obedience to him. eg. the Catholic concordant he signed with the Church that made them the official religion of France as long as they bowed to Napoleon as 'God's chosen warrior against evil'.
      Religious people getting murdered or slaughtered in a war or even a genocide is not an indication that either combatant is non-religious. Religious people murder each other all the time in name of their religion. Including people in the same religion. Nazi Germany was self-declared 94% Christian in 1933, had Deutsche Christian as their official national church, military pledges to God and to country, and Got Mit Uns on their belt buckles. Yet, they fought, killed and murdered Catholics, Protestants, Quakers, Mormons and individuals in just about every brand of Christian they could get their hands on that wasn't Deutsche Christian approved.
