This is so interesting. I’m Roman Catholic and I’ve always felt like we were very traditional and conservative. I had no idea that the Orthodox Church was even more so. It seems like there are pretty significant differences that I never realized.
I don't think that part of this video was very well presented. There are people who call themselves Catholic, but have even been to an extent excommunicated or barred from receiving Holy Communion, such as some politicians who push anti-Christian things, and are called not real Catholics. To refer to a survey of people who call themselves Catholic and then give an answer on a social or political issue, isn't really comparing two religions. What does the Bible say about it? What does the Pope say? What are the teachings of the two churches? And if the video is going to mention a current fad, why not give more of a history, how only in very very very recent years has public opinion swayed a bit, at the moment, to support gay marriage, etc. Perhaps someone will say yes they support it, but some years ago they didn't, and their parents and grandparents don't, who are of the same religion. To look at a snapshot of public opinion (and what self identifying Catholics were surveyed? Just those in the US?) and tell us about the differences between Catholic and Orthodox, in my opinion is not really explaining the differences between the two. It would be like highlighting when someone sins, or is in error, and saying that defines their beliefs. No, that is a sin or an error according to their belief system or their religion.

My mom is from Bulgaria, so I know a lot about Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Eastern Orthodox Christianity’s cross has three lines the normal one, right above the normal one is a much smaller line, and a long diagonal line at the bottom. That is supposed to represent The Holy Trinity. Look up Eastern Orthodox cross to see it. Edit: I forgot to mention that the middle one represents the son because Jesus’s arms were hanging there, the top the father because God rules heaven, and finally the bottom represents the Holy Spirit because it roams Earth.

@@zdvxr fair enough, in matters of orthodoxy and catholics it is a point of contention. It has to be said that the orthodox do acknowledge papal primacy. Or used to. The contention was as to what extent, Papal Supremacy or first among equals. After the split, they gave the first among equals to the patriarch of Constantinople (which at the time was the capital of the Roman Empire) Early Christianity did recognize the importance of the bishop of rome as the arbiter when it comes to theological disputes. Way before Christianity was even legal under the empire. I'm coming from a mixed Catholic - Orthodox background. My Catholic relatives have been very religious, church going people. There have been nuns, priests and church musicians among them. When I was young I was absolutely indifferent to Orthodoxy and the only connection I had was the fact I was baptised Orthodox as a child. Although not being very religious, I absolutely loved Catholic church and was often to masses, weddings and baptisms. I was like one inch close to converting to Catholicism. Getting older I've become more and more into Orthodoxy. It's traditional, raw, mystical, spiritual, kind and there's nothing more sublime than the Holy Orthodox liturgy. I still have got a great respect and the deepest feelings for the Catholic church and it's followers, but I'm finally happy being Orthodox myself.
Greetings, my beloved begotten sister/brother! I have some feedback if that's okay. I'd like to say that we as people are so glad that you have converted to Orthodoxy. I so agree it's much more traditional and pretty much more experienced than anything else. That's because it's connected to the Julian calendar (it's old style, but it's the truth) which is a lot better than the Catholic Gregorian calendar (modern-day people celebrate) that my personal opinion is not very truthfully celebrated and not very old style either(old style Julian calendar - either ancient, but has more experience and is blended with Orthodoxy - the traditional way to celebrate the best Orthodox holidays) you know that in Greek it translates to "Prawoslawye"? This is why in the Southern East countries, there are countries that are part of the Balkan. The Balkans are countries, located in the South East(Europe) where many of the population in there who are in it are called Slavic people. Over the past years, history has been one of the top main traditions and cultures from which we adapted today. Bulgaria, one of the Balkans, (next to the Black Sea borders) has one of the largest History in the whole of Europe (probably in the world too), and it's placed the second best mineral baths(in the world?) I attempted this for Lent this year, and though I failed a couple of times, it is truly something which enriches the soul. We should also follow the tradition of fasting on all Wednesdays and Fridays. I'm Scottish and in Scottish Gaelic, the names of three days of the week relate to this old fasting tradition - Wednesday is DiCiadain, "day of the first fast", Thursday is DiarDaoin, "day between the fasts", and Friday is DihAoine, "day of the fast". Continually praying for our churches to unify some day.

Orthodoxism prays to the God as main diety, orthodoxism allows divorces if the spose is alchoolic, violent, or sociopathic, orhodoxism allows marriage withing the church of an orthodox and another type of christian, without reconversion as it is believed that baptizing a follower of christ twice, is a heresy. And we don't pay a monthly tax to be part of the church. You pay a gift when you baprize a child, when you get married and when somebody dies, but not monthly, and nobody ex communicates you if you haven't went to the church for a year. So i don't think that will happen too soon.

Correction: It's not "Arch Bishop of Moscow", it's the "Patriarch of Moscow". Also regarding Easter: while your explanation regarding Gregorian and Julian calendars are correct in the context of the New Calendar and Old Calendar (14 days difference), the Easter is being calculated based on the Moon calendar and Jewish Easter. Orthodox do take into account the Jewish Easter calendar, and the Orthodox Easter must happen after the Jewish Easter. The Catholic Easter doesn't take into account the Jewish Easter. So there are some years when Orthodox Easter overlaps with the Catholic Easter, so again this is nothing to do with the Gregorian or Julian Calendar. The Christmas, however, between Catholic and Orthodox is always 14 days apart because of the Gregorian (new) and Julian (old) Calendars. Also Orthodox receive the Holy Fire, Which happens on the Saturday of Orthodox Easter in Jerusalem.
Also, vampires have full sway on the darkest hours before dawn on All Saints' Day, but they will be blocked from entering a room if the host has been placed in the cracks of the doorway.
the difference between the Old Julian calendar and Gregorian is 13 days. Some orthodox churches have changed the Old Julian with the New Julian Calendar (in 1923). New Calendar is not Gregorian calendar but based on the Julian (see Milankovic).
For Christmas, the day for exchanging gifts for Catholics and protestants, as well, is December 25,. The Orthodox churches would exchange gifts on January 6 instead. Tradition has it that this was the day that the magi(wise men)arrived in Bethlehem.

It didn't start out that way. The early Christians were horribly persecuted. Sadly this continued even after 'legalizing' Christianity. Even by the church itself! Remember the inquisition? And, the church tried to wipe out the Knights Templar, breaking into their homes & slaughtering them in front of their wives & children! My partner is from Croatia and he says these are the 2 main religious where he lives. Apparently, Croats are most frequently catholic and Serbs are most frequently orthodox. The 2 spent a long time hating each other resulting in war during the 90s. He's told me some heartbreaking stories, but he's gotta be the most fascinating and awesome man I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
As a Serb, you can't rely on any story from Balkans 100%. All countries on the Balkans have done some terrible things. It's just, many Croats and Serbs are rather willing to hate each other and put all the blame on the other rather than both admit their faults and reconcile, as we're painfully similar in linguistic alone, and should've been brothers, not enemies.
3:30 the infallibility of the pope is only when there is a disagreement, meaning he only has the last say. So when the Church is split on an opinion, the pope decides and the discussion is over. It does not mean the pope can just say anything and it is always meant to be correct. That is a common misconseption.
Funny, same thing for me but with Roman Catholicism. And after the first Nicene Creed the Church expressed four marks of the church. “One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic” then preceded to messed up up for years to come. I think it’s about time to disagree to agree to preserve Christendom! ✝️🙏

I'm Jewish. From my perspective, Orthodox Christianity appears to be the most familiar. This is probably due to the significant role ritual and tradition play in the everyday practice of both Judaism and Orthodoxy. I also view Orthodoxy as the oldest, "original" form of the faith, which undoubtedly grew out of my own. Love to all Christians, wherever and whoever they are ❤✝️✡️

The first thing you got wrong was the debate over semantics. Orthodox is the original teachings. If women are supposed to sit on the pews to the right, and men on the left, that's it. No discussion. You do it or leave.
The filioque, which likely originated in Spain as a defense against Arianism, only became a controversy when members of Charlemagne’s court adopted it and accused the Greeks of heresy for reciting The Creed in its original form. Even the pope at the time thought it was a bad idea to mess with The Creed. The real issue between East and West is the doctrine of papal infallibility and the idea that the pope, by himself, can define church doctrine. The Orthodox are proponents of the conciliar method employed in the great ecumenical councils forming the basis of the faith, where ALL the bishops met, discussed, and adopted doctrine together. It was the presence and collaboration of all the church leaders together which facilitated the holy spirit’s intervention.
The Holy Spirit's intervention, but yes. The origin of the Roman Catholic Church in its present form is Charlemagne. He established the Holy (no, not hardly) Roman (no, German) Empire (not much compared to the Roman Empire in New Rome - Constantinople). He sought out obscure doctrines (filioque, exotic Redemption theories) and discredited practices (unleavened bread for Holy Communion, unmarried priests) to bring into his church to distinguish it from the Orthodox churches of the east, especially that of the Queen City, Constantinople. He was the reason for the split between East and West.
"religious artwork" sure orthodox icons are indeed very beautiful, but when it comes to sacred art I think it's very difficult to top the Catholic side, from architecture, to sculpture and painting. needless to say that's just my opinion anyway.
As someone who is neither Orthodox nor Catholic but neutral, Orthodoxy feels much more natural to me
Plus he made a mistake. The orthodox faith doesn't forbid or limit gay people anything, its just our countries were mostly communist and conservative and its our tradition more than religion that makes us feel unnatural about it

The thing is that Orthodox churches do have some chairs benches, but they are generally used by old or sick people while the prayer is going on but they are placed near the walls while most of the actual church is empty (for people to stand) with the middle part usually having the icon of the sait of the church (this can vary).

@@zdvxr fair enough, in matters of orthodoxy and catholics it is a point of contention. It has to be said that the orthodox do acknowledge papal primacy. Or used to. The contention was as to what extent, Papal Supremacy or first among equals. After the split, they gave the first among equals to the patriarch of Constantinople (which at the time was the capital of the Roman Empire)
Early Christianity did recognize the importance of the bishop of rome as the arbiter when it comes to theological disputes.

Bulgaria, one of the Balkans, (next to the Black Sea borders) has one of the largest History in the whole of Europe (probably in the world too), and it's placed the second best mineral baths(in the world?) Just to clarify: Papal Infallibilty in the Catholic Church only applies to When the Pope is speaking on matters of faith and morals, as well as when he has specifically stated that he is speaking "ex cathedra" (from the chair of Peter). This is very uncommon, and rarely happens during the time most Popes are in power. In short, video missed a pretty key detail.
Also I think it is important to note that Catholics do actually fast during Lent, it just happens to be less .. how do I put this.. intense? than Orthodox fasting. And fasting on Fridays is something that I wish more people did, tbh I think most just forget that is something we're generally supposed to do.
Agreed. He really missed that. Here in the Roman Rite fasting from dairy is not a requirement during lent but from meat it is
You beat me to it. That line about Catholics believing that the Pope "never gets things wrong" really discredited this video.

This is incorrect There is a Metropolitan of Moscow. The Patriarch is the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia not just Moscow
@@aatevikThe date calculation for Pascha (Easter) was not changed in 1923. All Orthodox celebrate Pascha on the same date. Pascha needs to be calculated using the New Julian calendar, too or Easter will be celebrated in June soon enough. The bishops are doing the Faithful a disservice.
I must admit, I was extremely surprised by how accurate this video was! Obviously there were things that were oversimplified, things that were missed, but over all it was a great video! 3:30 the infallibility of the pope is only when there is a disagreement, meaning he only has the last say. So when the Church is split on an opinion, the pope decides and the discussion is over. Catholic raised here... i always wondered what the deal was with orthodox christians, but never actually thought ti look into it... in 41 years!😮
So thanks for that, i actually learned something today!❤
I wish there was much more from the Roman Catholic perspective, as a unaware person this seems more catered and heavily biased towards Orthodox rather than explaining both sides neutrally
Yeah it really was. Kinda felt like the was harsher when he spoke on Catholicism
I just liked the idea he was trying to stop everyone from kissing that ring
As someone raised catholic and that still hold some beliefs, I agree. It didn't seem very neutral.
It maybe sounds like that, but its not its pretty much objective
seemed like this was more of an explation of orthodoxy by contrasting it to catholicism. as most westerners are unfirmular with orthodoxy and thus will be the bulk of those clicking on the video.
So it’s also not as simple as he difference of belief in the nicene creed. The bigger issue at hand was that the pope thought he had dominion over all and the Eastern Orthodox Church held to the traditions as old as the apostles themselves.
And...he was right.
I’m orthodox and great lent isn’t a complete fast. We eat food just no meat ( and depending on how strict you follow the fast, no dairy). This also applies to Wednesday’s and Fridays. During any fasting day 3 meals a day isn’t frowned upon at all unless you’re a monk. And 90%ish of priest are married and have kids…I would know, I’m one of them
no meat, but fish is excluded. also no dairy
And milk, cheese, yogurt ..etc !
yeah my priest has also like 4 children but i do feel bad for him because his son is some idiotic cringy youtuber. Edit: his son is called Baka Prase on RUclips just look him up. You’d wish your parents never decided to marry and do the act.
If you are wondering the son is called Baka Prase he’s a Serbian youtuber and he’s pretty famous
sometimes I eat souvlaki till good friday, i fast till saturday night, and about 00:30 after resurection I stop the long fast I've been through.
Love to all Christians, wherever and whoever they are ❤✝️✡️
I agree
As a Christian (Church of England, but thinking of converting to the Orthodox church) that's very interesting to read. I've got so much love and respect for Jewish people 😊 ✝️✡️

3:29 No, you are mistaking Ex Cathedra statements. Popes sin, and some sin hard. So Popes aren't infallible in this sense.
Exactly even when they teach it is not necessary they are infallible.
They have to speak something *from* the dogma of the Church and it has been used only once
This is very interesting, I’ve never really had the chance to learn much about the Easter Orthodox Church. As a Catholic living in the Bible Belt of America I’ve mainly only been around Protestants.
It’s fascinating. Especially the Middle Eastern one (where Christ was basically born) and which unfortunately is the most oppressed - because they live in highly Muslim areas, sometimes extremist Islamist
@@BlueSwampyCraft and what is the middle eastern one exactly? All the ancient Orthodox Patriarchates (Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria) exist in the middle east, and the Monophysite Copts, Armenians, Syriac etc Orientals exist there too😛
It must be hard being a Catholic in the Bible Belt. I can’t even imagine.
Attend the RCIA classer at your parish. Learn your faith.
Out of all videos this is explained so well and is very digestible.

Egyptian orthodox... Well done,.most infor were actually accurate 👍
Well Egyptian orthodox aka coptic is an oriental orthodox church...I'm afraid he was talking about only the eastern orthodox church
Yes, Coptics also celebrate Christmas on a different day too!
I am Ethiopian oriental orthodox too
Seems like coptic and the eastern Orthodox share alot in common.. not Everytime was accurate to the coptic belief, true but It felt close.

As a long time follower and a follower of the Coptic Orthodox community, I hope you do well. I'll respond with any critiques after I watch the video.
The first thing you got wrong was the debate over semantics. Orthodox is the original teachings. If women are supposed to sit on the pews to the right, and men on the left, that's it. No discussion. You do it or leave.
As a Christian myself I wanna ask do you believe that there is 3 Gods (SON, FATHER AND THE HOLY GHOST) or you only believe that there is one true God
@@tonyclarke24 there is not a single Christian who believe there are 3 gods your questions isn’t even worth answering 🤦🏽♂️

@Infographics Show, as an Ethiopian orthodox Christian myself, we make the cross from the left shoulder to the right, not the other way around😶
Yes but you guys are closer related to Orthodox (me😀) than the catholics
Oh I’m catholic and I do that too, I never knew there was a certain was Orthodox Christians do it

Feel free to use our beards. - from an orthodox layperson rofl
And they say if you can’t beat’em join’em. Lol. You’re welcome to become orthodox. 😁
"religious artwork"
sure orthodox icons are indeed very beautiful, but when it comes to sacred art I think it's very difficult to top the Catholic side, from architecture, to sculpture and painting.
needless to say that's just my opinion anyway.
@@donaxtrunculus5023 you're right, it is forbidden to make sculptures/ statues in the orthodox church, only paintings are allowed.
