Catherine de' Medici, Queen of France, wife of Henry II, took part in ordering the massacre of Protestants, known as the "St. Bartholomew Massacre". Thousands of protestants (Huguenots) are said to have been massacred. Her son King Charles IX initially ordered the killing of several Protestant leaders, which turned into a massacre. However, it is believed that his mother Catherine instigated the whole plot. One could excuse them as an overreaction after an assassination plot against Admiral de Coligny, a Protestant leader failed, fearing Protestant retribution. It is not clear who ordered the assassination. The Protestants gathered in Paris for the wedding of Catherine's daughter Margaret and the Protestant King Henry of Navarre. The massacre took place a few days after the wedding so it was a sort of a "The Red Wedding".
Damn. It really sucks about Catherine De Medici. Civilization 6 makes her out to be so cool. To be fair, without her, her children would have definitely fallen victim to a coup that could've really messed up the monarchy. But yeah St. Bartholomew's Massacre was real messed up.
@@lucianatanase6932 , Henry always did what he wanted. His break with the Roman Church was not about Anne and less about ideology. Henry wanted a male heir and as he saw it, the way to do that was to divorce his menopausal first wife and marry a younger and more fertile woman who would give him a son. But since the Pope wasn't allowing that, he had to break with Rome.
Henry did not consider himself a Protestant though. He was committed to the 'old religion', just not to the Rome. The first real Protestant Ruler of England was definitely his teen son.
The video only highlights the bad in these rulers. Idk about the others but empress wi zetian opened up china’s trade routes and the Silk Road and built the country’s economy from 0 to 100. I beg to disagree about Empress Wu being an inefficient ruler. Along with emperors Taizong and Xuanzong, she made the Tang Dynasty the great dynasty that it was.
Mary Tudor does NOT deserve her bad reputation. She was such a kind and great girl and deserved the best childhood, but got the worst one and it ruined her. Poor girl. I blame Henry for all of it. He broke her! pushed and abused her until she couldn't take it anymore, and broke. And he kept her from her most wonderful mother since she was 15. I love Mary. I hope Henry is burning in hell for what he did to Catherine and Mary.
Got one bit wrong, Elizebeth1 didn’t break with Rome, it was her father Henry IIX who did that. She however was excommunicated by the Pope of the time who encouraged France and Spain to invade England and declared that it was quite legal to assassinate her. No wonder she got a bit upset with catholic’s. Regards.
Herodotus 94 Mary queen of Scots didn’t have what it took to be queen. She would have likely been over thrown like she was in Scotland and then what would have happened? Queen Elizabeth may not have had royal blood from both parents but she was King Henry VIII daughter. If your argument is that she was the daughter of a commoner and the marriage was not legal, then her brother Edward VI should have never been king either. But since the king decreed it, it doesn’t really matter. That’s how come Elizabeth was the rightful queen and Mary should have stayed in her own country and ruled it. But that’s just my opinion 😉
@ArmchairWarrior if you're going to use Roman numerals, then 8 is written as VIII not IIX. Look at a wristwatch or clock that uses them and tell me how 8 is written.
You forgot about Queen Ranavalona I of Madagascar who was a lot like Africa’s Joseph Stalin. Pursuing policies of isolationism and extreme government control and religious persecution. She is estimated to have killed around 2.5 million people during here reign. The most of any female ruler.
I was wondering if anyone would remember her. It's also worth noting that while 2.5 million (a conservative estimate, btw) might sound like a lot it grows when one considers the fact that at that time there were less than 10 million total living on the island.
Cool thing about Elizabeth Bathory! She was known to be headstrong and aggressive, Which wasn't good for her enemies, and also was frowned upon for women at the time. The details about her being so sadistic and about her torturing her servants so brutally were mostly rumors started by her rivals as a smear campaign against her. She isn't off the hook for being an asshole to her servants, though, she beat them often, had no patience for them, and did beat at least one of them to death. So she was a murderer, but not exactly jigsaw.

A priceless almost legendary headpiece was found on a distant relative of hers which supports the fact she had a very prosperous reign. Alot of the "bad" stories about her rule were written after she died, some by decades after, by people who thought they should be in power/ any woman was incompetent to rule. As it is the case with many rulers, the history is written by the victors. these discoveries were found since this video was made so, still well done video.

Dear Weird History, normally, I adore your videos. Though, with this one, please do check your sources more thoroughly. Olha was the first female ruler of Kievan Rus', not Russia. Whoa, it made me write a comment on RUclips for the very first time.
How on Earth could you have missed Ranavalona I, Queen of Madagascar??? I sat through this entire video expecting to see her as a slam-dunk numero uno!!!
@Patrick Bateman the world was very different back then. I imagine it would be very difficult for anyone, especially a women, to gain power through their own merit. And this video didn't show that some of these women were actually effective leaders. Ruthless but effective.
Yeah, but Isabella wasn’t exactly cruel. She was against the cruel ways to the Jews and Muslims during the Spanish Inquisition, she was against enslaving the natives of America that Christopher Columbus brought back to Spain. And several times she allowed a choice which was usually not cruel. She gave the choice once to I believe what were Jews to either convert religions, or to move away from her Queendom and give her all the personal items, without being harmed themselves

4:20 correction at the time of Queen Mary’s reign England was about evenly split between Protestants and Catholics so England wasn’t yet a majority Protestant country.
I don’t agree that Elizabeth I should be in here. She was actually one of the most benevolent monarchs of that time and she was far from the catholic hater that Mary was of Protestants. In fact, Elizabeth is credited with calming much of the discord between the 2 faiths. She hated that there was so much bloodshed over religion. She was also very witty, very supportive of the arts, very intelligent, and when she had to put people to death like her cousin Mary Queen if Scots she would lose sleep and take dats to sign the warrant. However, she was very vain about her appearance and would forbid her ladies in waiting to marry unless she picked out the groom. She also had a hot temper and was known to throw shoes. But many British still consider her the best monarch England ever have, even hundreds of years after her death.
Mary killed Protestants for the sake of a type of ethnic cleansing. She was also not on the throne nearly as long as Elizabeth. Elizabeth killed those who were treasonous regardless of religion. In our day and age she’d be barbaric but in those days she was a very benevolent ruler. She was also sympathetic to children and the elderly, sparing their lives if she could help it. She hated signing death warrants and would lose sleep over it.
Hey, small note on Princess Olga (I am Ukrainian who learned our history). She was a ruler of Kyivan (Kievan) Rus’, not Russia. It’s 2 different countries. Thank you ❣️
My favorite part was when the Narrator said Princess Olga stepped in as ruler for her son and proceeded to lose her mind. I have never laughed so hard in so long.
@werid person First of all, keep your frustration to yourself. And second she didn't do such thing, but if you're talking about 300 protestants burnt alive, it was Mary I of England's doing aka "Bloody Mary" and the incident is called Marian persecutions. So make sure to double-check the information before questioning someone's POV. And she was the Queen so if securing the throne means to clear the path from wild rats so then be it...
The biggest one you forgot was Ranavalona I of Madagascar. She basically conquered the neighbouring Kingdoms and united the Island, but in hey bloody means
This feels like a misleading/bad video. -Wu Zetian was a crazy effective ruler. You neglected to mention the massive smear campaign against her by literally every ruler in China afterwards. Xiran Jay Zhao has a much more informative and balanced video about her. -Olga of Kiev didn't just do those things for no reason. The group that killed her husband basically told her she was going to marry his murderer, Prince Mal, and the whole 'fire in the bathhouse' bit was what she did when those arrogant bastards showed up thinking she was going to do as she was told. Not that I'm cool with burning people alive, but that seems to wildly alter the narrative and doesn't align with this videos presentation of 'she just wanted to'. I'm too tired to do more. I really like this channel and didn't expect 'lol women be crazy' to genuinely be the topic of this video and its lead me to doubt if the other videos may be just as inaccurate/misleading.
Thank you for at least pointing out that Bloody Mary was succeeded by Bloody Bess...but I think you went a little light on Bloody Bess. She killed a lot more Catholics than her sister did protestants....if only because she reigned longer...
Isabella of Castile is one of the greatest leaders in history. And you forgot to mention that she had Columbus EXECUTED for his atrocities against the Indigenous People in the New World. Queen Isabella's dying wish was for the Indigenous People to be unharmed. But obviously, her wish wasn't granted. Castile and Leon was Queen Isabella's realm and she was a staunch Catholic, she required her subjects to follow suit. When you're in territory that doesn't belong to you, you do as you're told or get the hell out of Dodge. Go over to someone's house and do as you please then see what happens. It won't be pretty. Queen Isabella of Castile has never received the credit she deserves for being one of the greatest leaders in history.

Got Elizabeth 1 a bit wrong. She reinstated the Church of England which her father and brother had created and wanted religious tolerance but the Pope excommunicated her and declared it would not be a sin to kill her, which was bad enough, but he also encouraged France and Spain to declare war. All in all the Catholic Church caused their own persecution in a lot of ways. Still not one of the finer points of her rule though.
could you give me a source of the pope asking for France and spain to declare war? It would be a just war though, as why would you want your catholics to get tortured by rebels and to shut them down.
Xavier Ohara this is what I’m talking about, issues in 1570, temporarily suspended when it was proving more of a problem for catholics than Elizabeth and reiterated in 1588 to support the Spanish Armada. For further info try google as it’s well known facts. Pope Pius V "Regnans in Excelsis" ("Reigning on High") excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I of England, “the pretended Queen of England and the servant of crime", declared her a heretic, released her subjects from allegiance to her and excommunicated any who obeyed her orders: "We charge and command all and singular the nobles, subjects, peoples and others afore said that they do not dare obey her orders, mandates and laws. Those who shall act to the contrary we include in the like sentence of excommunication”
Herodotus 94 not exactly as she didn’t want children and she is related to the present queen. Also the Catholic Church is not a major force in the UK although I am happy to say it survives but catholics are still barred from some positions.
It's interesting you guys picked Elizabeth I's treatment of Catholics as what made her ruthless. Honestly, I thought you would have zeroed in on her execution of her cousin queen, Mary. Elizabeth may have made life more difficult for the Catholics, but she wasn't considered particularly cruel to them. (Other commentators have pointed out that Elizabeth wasn't the one to break from Rome, her father did. However, he did so to marry her mother, so Elizabeth owes her crown to that decision. Her mother was already pregnant with her before she officially married the king. Elizabeth would have just been a bastard, like his son, Henry Fitzroy with mistress, Bessie Blount.)

Damn. It really sucks about Catherine De Medici. Civilization 6 makes her out to be so cool. To be fair, without her, her children would have definitely fallen victim to a coup that could've really messed up the monarchy. But yeah St. Bartholomew's Massacre was real messed up.
Henry VIII broke ties with the Catholic church, not his daughter.
Mostly because of her mother Anne Boleyn. She convinced him
@@lucianatanase6932 , Henry always did what he wanted.

A priceless almost legendary headpiece was found on a distant relative of hers which supports the fact she had a very prosperous reign. Alot of the "bad" stories about her rule were written after she died, some by decades after, by people who thought they should be in power/ any woman was incompetent to rule. But many British still consider her the best monarch England ever have, even hundreds of years after her death.
if by calming discord you mean
implementing crippling penal laws, then yes, she did
Catherine the Great was also misrepresented in this video.
Yeah but she tormented and killed many more catholics then Mary I had killed protestants.

Lilu Koyen you got me
Rachel Hildebrand Dont worry that was my show too😂😂😂👌
Unfortunately so little is known about them, as a French myself the only thing we know about their relationship is that they cared about each other and that Mary was affected when he died, but other than that, Francis was only a small part in her life, their marriage lasted for only two years.. Their history together is so short compared to Mary’s lifetime, also Francis was known to be small and particularly fragile while Mary was tall and quite impressive to look at.
I LOVE Reign and I wish that Francis and Mary would’ve had such a beautiful love story in real life especially because it’s so unrealistic to be actually in love as royals at that time :(
@@estherlepage4155 thank you for the information! I am always wanting to know more about the kings and queens of other countries past. I was definitely intrigued by Reign. They made that show perfectly! Probably not accurate, but entertaining.
i remember a long NY Times Sunday Magazine story of a woman Doctor in Rwanda who urged on the mass murders and demanded the women be raped. i read she faced trial and that's where the story ended, nothing more, can you feature this woman?
2:38 why is there a castle in Germany in the late 19th century in the background???
Man, that's not craziness, that's evil
I think we can all agree that you can drop “ruthless” in the title and add “psychotic”
So, minus a few, by your logic every king a phyco, narcissistic leader? Well...fine by me.
I’m here for the narrator lol 😂 I literally bust out laughing every time!!
I like your videos but quite a few things in this were incorrect. Elizabeth 1st opted to tax Catholics over executing them, Catholics were only executed if they didn't pay up or tried conducting public services. She also didn't head up the protestant church her father did.
