History's 10 Most Ruthless Queens and Brutal Rulers

  • When most people picture a dictator, the first thought that comes to mind is usually of a strongman in military regalia. Seldom does one picture a dictator as a woman, and for good reason. There really hasn't been a female dictator in the modern sense of the word, but that doesn't mean that powerful women throughout history have never ruled with an iron fist. In fact, some of the most famous queens and female rulers in history have committed cruelties on par with their male counterparts.

During the Chinese Empress Wu's reign in the 7th Century, China was a superpower - the most prosperous and powerful nation on earth. She ruled for 50+ years until she voluntarily abdicated the throne in her 80s.
She was the first pioneer of women's rights 1,500 years ago. She had a female prime minister and empowered women to be entrepreneurs. She allowed women to own properties, get divorced, dress sexier, ride horses, go hunting, etc.
The Chinese historians who recorded her story were all men who resented women in power. Before and after Empress Wu's time, only men could serve as emperors.

Henry executed two wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard (if my memory serves, which it may not). He divorced two wives (Catherine of Aragon and I forget the other one). One wife died and his last wife survived him. Divorced, executed, died, divorced, executed, survived is the quick and dirty way to remember the fates of his wives. The names are harder, at least for me. I think it was three Catherines, two Annes, and one Jane, but don't quote me on that.
Empress Wu didn't do anything that male emperors hadn't done, but people, particularly back then, tend to think that women should be especially caring. Back then they also thought they should be submissive. She was a strong women who defended her throne. I can think of several male monarchs who killed family members without being judged as harshly.

Catherine the Great isn’t exactly evil, she was so dedicated to Russia that when she fell ill (I think it was the pox) she specifically asked for an Orthodox priest instead of a Lutheran priest to bless her. Her husband wasn’t a dedicated leader to a powerhouse of a country so he had to go. Catherine brought Russia to a golden age due to her rule, she might’ve did some questionable things but she’s a staple in Russia’s history.

Catherine de' Medici, Queen of France, wife of Henry II, took part in ordering the massacre of Protestants, known as the "St. Bartholomew Massacre". Thousands of protestants (Huguenots) are said to have been massacred.
Her son King Charles IX initially ordered the killing of several Protestant leaders, which turned into a massacre. However, it is believed that his mother Catherine instigated the whole plot. One could excuse them as an overreaction after an assassination plot against Admiral de Coligny, a Protestant leader failed, fearing Protestant retribution. It is not clear who ordered the assassination.
The Protestants gathered in Paris for the wedding of Catherine's daughter Margaret and the Protestant King Henry of Navarre. The massacre took place a few days after the wedding so it was a sort of a "The Red Wedding".

Her sons were useless and more into power than the actual responsibility of power and plotted to seize power. She didn’t kill the previous emperor to gain power but it was granted to her by her husband whom she loved and loved her and are the only rulers to share a burial ground which is rlly uncommon in China because where ur buried basically establishes your life’s accomplishments (think the terra-cotta warriors). She chanllenged Confucian ideals of the time which were women were better off stupid and if you weren’t u were unnatural and wack shit. She reformed women’s rights with the right to divorce and work freely. Ppl write horribly of her because she was judged like crazy for being a women. The killing and stuff were actually super normal in chinese royalty. Emperors in power often killed their brothers and father to get to the throne. She was honestly badass

Herodotus 94 Mary queen of Scots didn’t have what it took to be queen. She would have likely been over thrown like she was in Scotland and then what would have happened? Queen Elizabeth may not have had royal blood from both parents but she was King Henry VIII daughter. If your argument is that she was the daughter of a commoner and the marriage was not legal, then her brother Edward VI should have never been king either. But since the king decreed it, it doesn’t really matter. That’s how come Elizabeth was the rightful queen and Mary should have stayed in her own country and ruled it. But that’s just my opinion 😉

Theres been recent uncovered evidence that wu zetian wasnt such an "ineffective" ruler as once thought. They found evidence to indicate that women had more freedom during her rule like being able to ride a horse etc, the common folk were pretty happy with her, and theres evidence that they were a very prosperous and pretty peaceful population under her rule. A priceless almost legendary headpiece was found on a distant relative of hers which supports the fact she had a very prosperous reign. Alot of the "bad" stories about her rule were written after she died, some by decades after, by people who thought they should be in power/ any woman was incompetent to rule. As it is the case with many rulers, the history is written by the victors. these discoveries were found since this video was made so, still well done video.

    Cool thing about Elizabeth Bathory!
She was known to be headstrong and aggressive, Which wasn't good for her enemies, and also was frowned upon for women at the time. The details about her being so sadistic and about her torturing her servants so brutally were mostly rumors started by her rivals as a smear campaign against her.
She isn't off the hook for being an asshole to her servants, though, she beat them often, had no patience for them, and did beat at least one of them to death. So she was a murderer, but not exactly jigsaw.

You should look into Lady Blanche Arundell, of Wardour Castle in Wiltshire It is said that she and her household of only 25 people held off a Parliamentary army of 1300 for 9 days. Fascinating story. My maternal grandmother's last name was Arendell and is said to be a descendant of this family.

In defense of Bathory. her plea was never offered to the court, those who confessed against her were tortured. She was a powerful and wealthy widow. Others wanted her wealth so maybe they made most of this shit up? Not saying she didn't do any of it but how much is really true? You don't get and keep power without being ruthless.

@werid person First of all, keep your frustration to yourself. And second she didn't do such thing, but if you're talking about 300 protestants burnt alive, it was Mary I of England's doing aka "Bloody Mary" and the incident is called Marian persecutions. So make sure to double-check the information before questioning someone's POV. And she was the Queen so if securing the throne means to clear the path from wild rats so then be it...

Isabella of Castile is one of the greatest leaders in history. And you forgot to mention that she had Columbus EXECUTED for his atrocities against the Indigenous People in the New World. Queen Isabella's dying wish was for the Indigenous People to be unharmed. But obviously, her wish wasn't granted. Castile and Leon was Queen Isabella's realm and she was a staunch Catholic, she required her subjects to follow suit. When you're in territory that doesn't belong to you, you do as you're told or get the hell out of Dodge. Go over to someone's house and do as you please then see what happens. It won't be pretty. Queen Isabella of Castile has never received the credit she deserves for being one of the greatest leaders in history.
