      There are videos comparing in aerobars on a road vs in drop bars on a road bike, in a wind tunnel, for a user to see the difference. It isn’t on this channel, but, it’s significant. As aero as road bikes are, they’re still going to conform to uci regulations, limiting their aero capabilities, whereas tri bikes don’t have this limitation.

    Taren, great video! I do have a question. I just got into triathlon this year (bad timing), so all I'm doing this year is training. I'm coming from cycling and have a mid level road bike. I'm considering an upgrade to my bike early next year. Since I haven't yet done a tri, I can't say for sure that I'll love the events and want to stay with it, so a tri bike is out. I'm leaning toward an upper level (but not top level) road bike with more aero features figuring that it'll serve me well next year when I start doing some triathlons, and if I end up not really enjoying them as much as I'm hoping to, then at least I'll have a sweet road bike to enjoy. In either case, the mid level bike would be relegated to trainer and foul weather duty. If I really love triathlons, then I'll look to add a mid to upper level tri-specific bike in 2022. Does this sound reasonable?

    The problem with aero testing is that it can't take drafting into account. Cyclists were surprised when a triathlete beat everyone in the Zwift race they held at the beginning of lockdowns, but it didn't surprise me that someone that is accustomed to not being able to draft won a race in which drafting wasn't a factor.

  • @MattSezer
    @MattSezer 3 года назад

    If it’s a flat course, and you’re riding a fixed gear with the proper gear ratio, why are you going to be significantly slower than the road bike? Road bikes weigh at least a pound or two more because of all of the extra stuff, so even if you have a steal fixed gear and a carbon road bike, they’re going to be similar weights. With drop bars, they’re going to be equally as aerodynamic.

However, that includes also upgrading tires and tubes from "puncture-proof and super slow" to "super thin ans super fast" as well as a 2.5k EUR disc wheel. So the difference is significant but I think you will get most of it from using better tubes and tires as well as clip-on aero bars if you start with a road bike.

Hoped I'd benefit from only having the TT as I'm in the right position More of the time, am well used to the position and I'll take the 20 minutes benefit all day long! At.my speed a TT bike is going to knock the equivalant of 10k off the bike distance - I LOVE that!

    I would have expected a greater difference between 150w and 210w, because wind resistance raises exponential. Or I may be wrong?

    • @Arcenicum
      @Arcenicum 4 года назад

      IT is actually the other way around: you need a lot more power to go a little bit faster, 8 times more power to go 2 times as fast. From very coarse estimates, the required power to ride at a certain speed increases with the cube of the speed (P=C*v^3, P for power, v for velocity, C for a fitting constant). The other way around, speed increases with the cube root of power (v = cube_root(P/C) ). Increasing power from 150W to 210W is a 40% increase in power, which would result in an approximate increase in speed of 12%.
      Checking with the data:
      - Road bike at 150W goes 29.7kmh, 12% faster is 33.3kmh, measured speed at 210W is 33.5kmh.
      - Tri bike at 150W goes 31.2kmh, 12% faster is 34.9kmh, measured speed at 210W is 35.1kmh.
      These maths seem to give pretty reasonable answers with high school level physics.

    Tri bike or aero bikes should start pulling off more at higher speeds or watts. But in your case road bike is closing the gap when you move from 150 watts to 210 watts. Could there be something wrong with your calculations?

  • @francisthionville6647
    @francisthionville6647 4 года назад

    Top video, but I think it's not quite balanced. Higher power should be used. Resistance to selling is exponential with speed. The gains of the TTbike would be much greater by producing a more difficult effort, probably close to 10%

  • @matteozavaglia7154
    @matteozavaglia7154 4 года назад

    Also relevant to mention that not everyone can average the same power in both bikes. For instance, I average 10 watts more on road bike (madone with medium profile wheels) in a ride similar to IM 70.3 with 800 m altitude gain, but average speed is higher on my TT (speedmax with high profile wheels) for circa 1.5 km per hour

    Would be interesting to see the difference between an adapted road bike with dropbars, etc. and the tri-bike. Because having yo buy 2 expensive bikes is what I'm mostly afraid of as a potential hobby triathlete. Did my first triathlon on Brompton and I was still able to compete with the better triathletes (34min sprint), so I assume that I could be a good triathlete with the right bike and a bit of dedicated training.

The ARGON 18 E112 with a full disk in the back or my road bike TREK EMONDA SL6? I think I'll go with the ARGON. An Idea!!! What if you redid the test but with speed as your constant.
