I eyedroppered a Preppy, wrote with it for a couple of weeks, and then it accidentally ended up in a drawer in my desk, and it completely slipped my mind, a tell-tale sign of having too many inked pens. Found it a year later, uncapped it and it just .. wrote. Love these little pens. I bought an 05 a few weeks ago and I was quite surprised that it's more like a Western M. I like your channel, by the way. I've been subscribed for a while and have watched a bunch of videos, and they're always nicely made. Keep up the good work!
Yes, no denying it. the preppy is fantastic. Like you said, the 0.5 or M is decently wet and broad. The 02 is a hidden gem and in some places it is priced a little bit higher than the other nibs.
I've got like 3 different generations of preppies over the past 8 years and I find that the older ones I have are the sturdiest. That is the ones with the almost entirely printed gray on clear body and the clear with printed text on body ones. The most recent generation with the coloured bodies like in the video are not as sturdy and feel more flimsy and also happen to have cracked the soonest out of all my preppies, considering I have ones almost a decade old, go figure. The barrel seems to be either thinner or made of a weaker plastic compared to the older ones, haven't quite figured that out.
The nib of the Platinum Preppy/Plaisir/Prefounte is a very nice nib and surprisingly wet for its fine line. I have some Preppys and a Plaisir. I have a problem with the Plaisir when I accidentally dropped it, the plastic section cracked, so I changed the section with a Preppy. I agree with you, this pens are great writers but unfortunately its plastic is not very resilient, when my Plasir dropped everything was fine except the olastic part, a little disappointing but fortunately I could resolve it, i guess is a blessing on disguise that all entry level platinum pens have interchangeable parts 😂. Thank you for the video.
Thanks Jorge for your comment. Fun fact - although the preppy's plastic is brittle and cracks easily, it is fairly strong vs ink. Some pens will literally melt when exposed to ink, this isn't one of them. Have a nice day ahead!
The Preppy writes best of all the budget pens I own. The Pilot Kakuno has a prettier nib, but the Preppy is smoother and half the price. I'd say it's even a tad smoother than the TWISBI Eco and Lamy Safari, much more expensive pens. I even like the standard blue cartridge the Preppy comes with. The ink shades quite nicely.
Fair enough! I agree that looks-wise the base models aren't very special, like I said its mainly about the nib. I like the crystal model which is all clear - unfortunately its not that easily available in Singapore. Generally, I am all for making the preppy less "disposable" and more reusable in nature.
I really like this pens for the value. Yes they crack. What I do is I eyedrop them and seal them with crazy glue instead of grease. Once I finish the ink get rid of them.
It's strange that yours are cracking at the barrel. Are you using a good pen case? If I saw mine cracking at the barrel, I would definitely be hesitant to eyedrop them. Try switching over to the Plaisir, I know its more expensive but throwing away a nice preppy nib would be a waste.
I have a problem on my Preppy EF, the pen always drying after a few seconds not use uncapped. Maybe it's the nib or is it just the ink? I refilled it with Diamine Quartz black. Maybe someone can help me? I'm still new to fountain pens.
No experience with that ink. Did you have the drying out with the original cartridge? I would just soak the nib in water overnight and clean it out. In terms of ink I use, its mainly Waterman or Pilot.
@@WrexelsWorld Oh okay. I don't have problem drying out with the original cartridge. Maybe it's the ink.. I will try to to clean and use another ink on that pen after the ink runs out.
@@spellmaster8099So I've tried using another ink, and it has no problem on the platinum cartridge. I've tried using other diamine ink and it works fine too. It depends on the ink you use. After using it for quite a while, I realized that on the EF or maybe F nib, you have to use a wetter ink. The ink from Platinum works well. I've also read on the internet that Japanese fountain pens tend to have a wetter ink but the fountain pen flow is more dry. And the European fountain pen has a wetter nib and dryer ink. (But not all Europe ink is dry, but it tends to be dryer than the japanese one.) So try using a wetter ink, you can search the ink first the reviews on the internet, and try to buy a wetter ink. Some diamine inks are wet too and could work well on the preppy.
7:27 "... or even another Preppy that hasn't cracked before" this was brilliant, I love it :)

Eye dropped preppy writes too much ink
@@tanyapunyo2074 I have 4 eyedroppered at the moment and all 4 write perfectly. Maybe try a less lubricated ink?
@@darkchocolate4643 i use pilot blue ink

These look great for the price (although I prefer the look of the Plaisir), and I wish they sold the nibs separately so I could get all three!

Totally agree. Just be aware that it tends to dry out more than the others you mentioned, even with that spring loaded cap.
The usual line of preppies don't speak to me, however, the special editions are beautiful. 😁

Well I always try to reuse any fountain pen that I own, silicon grease and o-rings don't cost much. Thanks for your comment
@@WrexelsWorld Agree with you. But, they tend to crack at the barrel, thats why I did that.

In your conclusion, you are holding up a #3, that's a Fine. So which is it, the sweet spot, is it the #2 EF or the #3 F ?
this is nice! they cost 5usd in asia i live here. may i know what brands are beginner friendly for you that aren't too expensive as well?
I think the entry level Pilot e.g. Metropolitan, Kakuno or Explorer or Faber Castell e.g. Grip, Loom would be a good choice for a beginner.
Does anyone know what ink the Preppy cartridges come with? I do not like using cartridges so would like to get the same bottled ink instead.
Hi Swagat, I am not 100% sure but it should be standard Platinum black, blue and red; not the Carbon or Mixable versions.

They're quite difficult to hold when hands are sweaty
Yes, but I think Platinum Preppy it's still better than holding a Pilot Kakuno when hands are sweaty.
Love that feedback.
Sexy one.
Now a preppy fan.
I too have a preppy but not with feedback
