They’re Playing Our Song was the first broadway show that I ever saw. I was 14. To this day , it remains one of my favorite shows and I still listen to the cast album to this day ... My great admiration for Lucie Arnaz began then and I have remained a huge fan of hers to this day. I have been fortunate to meet her a few times over the years and I think she is an awesome person . Real , likable and so down to earth and nice . She is the real deal and I love her . A class act....❤️
I'm extremely happy that this clip exists. Wow. It's wonderful to see Klein and Arnaz in action then and more recently and of course their respective acting and singing chops are still there. Is it just me or have they gotten even better with age? They've always been class acts.
Nothing has touched my heart better than when I was able to meet Lucie Arnaz in Atlantic City when she performed for our charity concert. I produced the Neil Simon book of the wonderful script for "They're Playing Our Song" (something I have held onto since the age of 14) and Lucie signed it. Lucie's performance that night was just as powerful as ever and our audience was thrilled! Lucie performed a tribute song for all of the people in her life that made her the wonderful gem she truly is and it was such a beautiful night. I love love love Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill!
Synching these two performances...31 years apart is nothing short of genius... to add to my comment from 3 years ago... I still marvel at the patience and talent it took to marry these two performances. THANK YOU!
So much fun. I admit that "They're Playing Our Song" holds a very special place in my heart for multiple reasons. I've been a musical theater/motion picture geek for as long as I can remember. This was one of the first "contemporary" OBC albums I ever purchased (as opposed the hundreds of "classic" ones that I had borrowed from the Chicago Public Library back before I started working full time). The combination of composer, lyricist and playwright were perfect for me. Marvin of course was a bonafide star after 1973 though I admit his score for Same Time Next Year from 1978 included a song that I loved so much I used it for my wedding a decade later. Carol had collaborated on some wonderful songs with Melissa Manchester that I enjoyed very much. And then there was "Doc" Simon. I had been a huge fan of his for many years. I kind of felt that he owed me one after writing the screenplay for The Goodbye Girl, because that movie truly felt as if someone was peeking into my life in the character of Elliot Garfield. I somehow felt as if the lead in TPOS being named Vernon was just "Right."
+Vernon Hill , what you wrote made me smile. I was one of the 'Voices' (for 11 months) in the Australian production back in the early 1980's (Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide). Our leads were Vernon, John Waters (Australian Actor not the 'other' one) and Sonia, Jacki Weaver (now two time Oscar Nominee - who knew?). Do you know 'They're Playing Our Song" is played 9 times at every performance....still would get you going every show even after months. I've seen several productions over the years and they lack one thing ... Doug Schmidt's fabulous sets. You mention The Goodbye Girl .. that's where I started noticing Neil Simon reuses quite a few gag lines from SONG/PROMISES/plays in other projects. There is a line I remember about Elliot (GOODBYE GIRL) losing his cane in the snow .... Vernon also loses his cane. Same gag.
Fantastic. They're as good (if not better) as their year and a half on Broadway when I must have seen it five or six times. I lived in NYC then, and when either my family visited me or a friend came into town, it was a perfect chance to provide a great "New York Experience" and see this wonderful show. I'm Lucie's age and I still have a crush on her since "The Lucy Show" (or would it be "Here's Lucy"?), anyway she looks fantastic and so does Robert Klein!
The combination of these two brilliant performances by these two wonderful performers is a real gift. I believe that the newer version was from the Symphony Space performance of a few years ago. I was lucky to have been there. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)
Saw this twice in the early 1980's... the second time with Lucie Arnaz and Laurence Luckinbill. This show will forever be magic to me...
Still epic in 2023 ❤️
my favourite musical

So did I !!!! SO SAD to see stage west is gone. But, shawn Cassidy, bill daily and robert Vaughn were the memorable ones i saw
Ms.Arnaz' hair is now silver grey..like Mr.Klein's.

Is it just me or does 2010 Lucie Arnaz look YOUNGER than 1979 Lucie?
Thinner -
What was the 2010 version played?!! Love the mashup but wondering where it came from.
Not 1979 and 2010. 1979 Tony Awards and 2019 40th Anniversary reunion concert.
where can i find the 2010 clip
