    Your video has helped me achieve two things, how to find live histogram which I didn't think I could, and to feel stupid for not reading the book properly.. Thank you.

    Definitely an overlooked and highly valuable feature is the histogram display in Live View mode. Thanks for the clear and concise tutorial on how to set up this function on my Nikon.

    Hello from Texas! I keep forgetting that you must first bring up the light meter using the OK button before you can bring up the live view histogram using the Info button. (on the D500.) Thank you for that, Jason.

    Excellent description! I lost the histogram which I had before and somehow forgot how to get it back. Now thanks to your video I was able to get it back. Surprisingly the manual of the D-810 doesn't explain what you showed in the video, I looked for it and I could not find it. Good job! Thank you.

    A few days ago I saw this very useful feature on a Canon DSLR. And was disappointed that my D750 doesn't have such LV histogram.
    .... Until I found your video today. Thank you !!!

    Thanks Jason for the excellent video. I have recently added a 2nd hand D810 to my gear for landscape photos. I generally shoot mirror less Fuji so I have been accustomed to having readily histogram available on screen. Now I know how to access it also on the D810, which by the way I find to be excellent for landscape photography.
    Thanks for sharing !

    I use LV to setup at an arena in Camera mode on my D850s, as soon as i am happy i switch to normal mode and use the settings from Camera LV. Its simple and allows you to cut chimp testing down a lot. Nikon are getting better, just very very slowly.

  • @cloudatlasminer478

    I’m assuming it’s a “pro” feature. I didn’t even look for my histogram until I decided to upgrade from a d3400 to d850. Non-“pro” models that don’t support the various AF lenses and non-CPU lenses probably won’t have life view histograms. But, using light metering apps helps a lot too. And like traditional film cameras, you’d be hand metering.

  • @kochel331
    @kochel331 7 лет назад +2

    Great info, Jason. I've had my D750 nearly a year and I didn't know about the live-view histogram
    However, I just tried it and found it to be pretty inaccurate.

    • @JasonOdellPhoto
      @JasonOdellPhoto  7 лет назад

      I find it to be more accurate than your regular meter, because it isn't biased by the focus points. Make sure you don't have exposure compensation turned on by accident. I also recommend using the "Flat" or "Neutral" Picture Control settings to get a more accurate histogram.

    • @kochel331
      @kochel331 7 лет назад

      Well I am using "Neutral" PC and 0eV compensation in manual mode. Do you use it with matrix, spot, or CW metering?

    • @JasonOdellPhoto
      @JasonOdellPhoto  7 лет назад

      Matrix. I see no real difference between the Live View histogram and the histogram of the resulting image.

      I just sent you an e-mail.

    Hi. I have a problem with my camera's AF-S and AF-F. When I set it into Live View, the shutter won't release. However, when I
    switch it to MF, the camera works. May I ask what seems to be the problem with the auto-focus in this case? Any action you may suggest will be much appreciated. This is the first time I encountered this problem.
    P.S. My cam is Nikon D3300. Thanks & GOD bless!

      In Live View (camera mode, not movie) press OK. The exposure meter is displayed. Then cycle through the 'info' button. You should first see the grid, and then the histogram.

    Now it's actually irritating, and why cant i get those damn lines out of my optical shots. All my shots have these bars on side. Grid lines to the side. They show when downloaded, uploaded, so my optical is absolutely useless, I paid 3500 for this 850, it takes pics when I accidently tap screen, viewfinder shots have bars on them. Wtf?? No option to take away. I see others posting pics with these side bars. What a crappy situation photograph has turned into. A marketing plow, anyone have nice old stuff they'd like to trade for new 850 with 2 lenses. Want fair deal, will no longer fuck with this crap. I do better in shorter time with 50 year old gear. Just need good lens, anyone? Will throw shitty new 7200 in for free. It's all shit
