I have been using Nikon and aperture priority since 1977. I used it mainly to get the highest shutter speed possible for a given scene. The film cameras didn't have auto-ISO. I'm going to check my digital bodies now, and set them up like you showed! GREAT tip! Worth a "Subscribe" push!!!
Great video, well explained just one thing to bear in mind when setting a minimum shutter speed on your camera Generally speaking, using the standard rule of thumb is to make the minimum shutter speed equal to the maximum focal length of your lense when hand-holding your camera. For example, if you are shooting with a 200mm lens then you want to keep your minimum shutter speed at 1/200 sec or above to avoid any blur occurring from camera shake.

One of the most useful tips I've seen. I've only ever shot manual because it's all I had growing up on basic film cameras. Only just started using A priority lately but this sets my mind at ease.
When I first got a dslr camera, I decided that I would learn to use manual right out of the gate. I got very familiar with it. Then the time came when I was asked to be a second shooter for a wedding. Only knowing how to use manual mode and not understanding the other modes, 90% of my shots were not usable. It took me a while to figure out what you just shared in such a short time!
Yeah man, weddings are so full different scenarios and lightings and Manual Mode is gonna make things slower than a turtle with crutches. On the other hand, this tutorial is simply amazing because it allows us to do so much more in less time so we don't miss those lovely shots ever again!
I learned aperture priority mode in one night because of you. Great and fun tutorial. I love how you carefully explain everything but not to the point that I’ll be sleepy.
Just bought a Nikon 850. The last camera I bought was a Nikon F3 in 1980 so this old dinosaur has a lot to learn about digital cameras. I found this video helpful in so many ways thank you so much.
Great tutorial! I went from a Nikon FE-2 film camera to a D9 almost a decade ago. I was really a expert with the FE9. I'm constantly frustrated by the menus to get the camera to do what I know it can do. You addressed one of the situations I find most frustrating: the camera overriding a shutter speed that know is appropriate to avoid shake/blurring. I need to shoot more often until I can remember all of this when on an "assignment." This was an excellent help.
I asked a question 1 year ago relating to this procedure on my Nikon D300 and you kindly replied . I have now upgraded my camera and have revisited your video and I have to say thank you . This is a wonderful set up and has improved my photography journey 100% . Thank you Andrew and may I say as a teacher your methods are first class .
This is exactly the way I have been teaching my beginning photography students to take photos for years. Stay in Aperture priority (with ISO 100 for Nikon users) but with one rule- If you are hand held, turn Auto ISO on (Nikon) or go to Auto ISO (Canon). If you are on a tripod, turn Auto ISO off (Nikon) and go to ISO 100 for Canon. Auto ISO's job is to make it so you can hand hold the camera but is you are on a tripod, you should be at ISO 100 to get the best possible image and you dont worry about camera shake then. My students should be focusing on composition and the "decisive moment". They will get good results every time when shooting Aperture priority this way and then I teach then to shoot full manual when the requirements call for it such as night photography or using off camera flashes, etc.
Hi Gregory, I have the Canon 7D and I love Aperture Priority but I cannot figure out how to set the shutter speed to a fixed value like Andrew explained in video. Would you know how to set my camera so in Aperture mode the camera uses the ISO instead of the shutter priority? Thank you Ramone

For review. 2:00 4:10 Excellent video for Aperature during the daytime. ISO 100 min, auto enabled. Shutter speed min 1/30. Max ISO 6400. Max ISO with flash 3200. With stars and planets (probably for another video), it is best to set your camera to manual mode. It needs a high ISO to see them at first in the view finder, then when they are framed in and focused, the ISO needs to manually be adjusted back down to 200-400 ISO, because the camera wants to use an ISO of 3200 by default at night and resulting in too much glare to see the planet's details.
A Nikon lens with VR (Vibration Reduction) lets you go slower with shutter speed when camera handheld, sometimes interesting effects captured from the movement of subject like when panning or blurry hair movement in the wind or blurred moving arms. I guess I'm saying don't be too scared to go slower, 'capturing' movement vs 'freezing' movement, interesting shots are to be had.
Very nice! Even with 5-axis IS, I don't like shooting hand-held below about 1/15, and I try to keep my max ISO below 1600. This setting works great for me.
you sir are frigging awesome. You are the only person I've come across so far that has addressed this 'bog' regarding ISO and shutter speed. Plus, your tutorials are spot on, brilliant and funny as hell

Merci beaucoup! This is so far the best explanation on Aperture mode. As a Nikon user, I Thank You for showing how to fix this feature on Nikon cameras. *You have a new suscriber and my like* 😊
For what it's worth, I've found on my two D850's that a +1 exp. compensation is neccesary most of the time in Aperture priority. drove me nuts for about 6 months - not a control I've ever really used. And i guess I've been using the auto ISO wrong all along. What can I say? I'm an old film guy where film speed wasn't an option for the next 36 shots! Thanks Andy for another great tutorial!
Wowza!! My mind is finally open to aperture priority!! I’ve been shooting manual for years and could not figure out that odd goose Ap. Not only do I understand it I can put it into practice!! I thank you!!

Good, clear explanation! Too many 'must shoot in manual' snobs around. Of course, just using an slr like a point and shoot is not the way to go either, but as another comment points out, in dynamic situations, like event photography, there just isn't time to find all the right settings before the moment is lost forever.

You're the greatest...i had the Nikon d7000 and a shitload og lences..stupid enough to switch it to a mirror less .. because of the convince of the build in wifi ... regret it deeply... so now I bought a Nikon d5200 having trouble finding it not to take the same quality photos as my d.7000 even though more pixels ...this video seems to help ...thanks
Man! Just what I needed! I ran into this situation taking pictures of my daughter for her graduation. Had the camera on an aperture priority mode and was running into this issue of setting the aperture but the shutter was everywhere when light changed. Thank you so much! I’ll for sure change all this settings on my camera and hoping get better results. Thanks again!
It’s actually the other way around, at least on Nikon DSLRs like the one that was used in this video. The camera lowers the shutter speed until it reaches the user set limit. Only after that limit is reached, the camera dips into higher ISOs. The AUTO ISO icon in your viewfinder starts blinking when this starts to happen.

Very nice! Even with 5-axis IS, I don't like shooting hand-held below about 1/15, and I try to keep my max ISO below 1600. This setting works great for me.

Good, clear explanation! Too many 'must shoot in manual' snobs around. Of course, just using an slr like a point and shoot is not the way to go either, but as another comment points out, in dynamic situations, like event photography, there just isn't time to find all the right settings before the moment is lost forever.

FYI once your camera has reached its max ISO that you have set that's the only time your shutter speed will adjust
Thank you so much... nice video... no advertisements

First discovery. Most excellent short lesson. Subscribed. I have a Sony 6000 but will work my way through. Like your direct teaching style and appreciate your work.
Sadly the a6000 can only limit the upper and lower ISO settings not the shutter speed
Thanks for excellent explanation. Can we use Auto ISO in Shutter priority mode?

Cool. I usually choose the fixed ISO (low 80 or 100) on my Sony Alpha. I DO like the idea of a 'floating' ISO depending on what the camera's sensors see.
