    Some Samsung fans are immediately providing backlash to the idea that Ready for is better ... I don't see why it's such a controversial statement. It came out and offered 4K resolution, a first party dock with active cooling when Samsung hasn't released any first party accessories in six or seven years since the Note 8.
    Separate purpose-built modes for gaming and video... Faster charging, chargers come in the box, the flipable razor supports it
    Honestly if it wasn't for the developers at Good lock dex would be largely ignored. And good lock is not available worldwide, nor is it a native part of dex.
    And some people are pointing out individual bugs on Motorola /ready for and I don't doubt for a minute that they exist and can be annoying.
    But I can name a dozen annoying compatibility issues with dex. From proprietary limitations with the on-screen keyboard when using an external monitor, which eliminates the ability to do voice typing in certain cases... Copying and pasting is completely broken on dex.
    Even their own browser has significant issues with compatibility using the browser version of Google docs which I was trying to use as a workaround.
    Again I don't mean to nitpick, I think dex is great. Of course these relatively new desktop modes are going to have some nagging bugs.
    But the people pointing out a couple of them for Motorola as an example as to dex is superior our having a pretty selective memory.

      Pardon I meant to say copying and pasting is broken when I'm using Google docs....
      There's also another annoying issue that if you're using a keyboard and you try to search for something on a browser and then you hit enter it won't search...
      You have to take the extra step of clicking the screen with your stylus or finger.
      It's an issue with several major browsers including Firefox. I think it can be corrected or mitigated if you turn off the digital keyboard when you're using a physical one, but then you lose the ability to quickly voice type.

      One of the maiin reasons why all my phones are pretty much samsung flagships that have Dex (ie want a flip phone but not without Dex) I am super interested in Motorolla because they offere competition in this space although it looks a lot like the old school version of Dex. Now Dex is not perfect but it literally replaced all my roku boxes/nvidia shields and is amazing for doing any google stuff on a monitor since I dont log into any google accounts on linux, micrsofot or apple devices.

      Samsung has 4k output and they have 4k output Dex docks. It also has seperate app sounds so you can cast your Netflix to a TV wirelesslly and still play games, surf media, or browse shopping or RUclips on you phone. It also has the multi control, link to Windows, and phone connectivity to make/take calls or messages wirelessly on your sepereate device. I can even still use all 12 of my customizable swipe gestures and utilize my phoen at 60hz while the casted program runs at 120hz. Not to mention developer options allows you to force app resizing, for full windows, and force pop windows for any non compatible apps. They've even gotten Linux and winlator running on dex now so that people can tune programs and play actual PC games like Fallout 3. Dex is way ahead.

    Thank you for taking time to focus on phones as PC replacements! When my old laptop died, I really didn't want to replace it because it was so heavy. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I needed a new phone too so now I am going for an S23 and nexdock. I would not have known I could do that without your videos.

    Thanks Juan for covering android desktop mode all these years. Does ReadyFor support high refresh rate like 1440p 120hz? I have a Samsung Galaxy device, I can get 4k 60hz on dex with the help of good lock, but dex or good lock doesn't allow higher refresh rate. It's frustrating, I'm so used to 120hz or higher, I would happily take 1440p 120hz over 4k 60hz

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 Год назад +3

      1) supports native 4k resolution. Dex is 1440p max (unless you experiment good lock, but that's a limited to less than half the planet and not part of the native experience)
      2)separate gaming mode, video mode etc
      3) built a first party dock with modern standards and active cooling
      4) supported on their flippable phone
      This is just off the top of my head, I'm sure Juan could mention several other examples .
      I live Dex but Samsung hasn't released the first party dock in 6 or 7 years, and has basically ignored any development outside of good lock.

      Besides all the cool features it has per se, Ready For is available for some "medium end" phones, like this Edge 40 on which I am writing, and not limited to "High End" phones, although a bit restricted to either using it with cable (HDMI) or wirelessly for specific models. If you want Dex, you have to buy the very expensive ones (the "S" lineup only). Motos w this feature, are more affordable and they give you a very decent "Dex" experience.

    • @jordanjackson8873

      @@michaelcorcoran8768development has been sort of ignored, but it's still been getting polished regardless. Separate game mode is subjective to even want, since you can still access your customized game hub in Dex. Also, Dex does far better with emulation and streaming. By the way, the first party Dex dock they released hears ago already and 4k output, multiple types of plug-in ports, wireless charging, and a cooling fan on the back. What do they need to change about it?

  • @JohnScigulinsky
    @JohnScigulinsky Год назад +3

    Have they fixed the mouse hover issue? I had to switch from ReadyFor back to Dex because if I wanted to know what an icon in LumaFusion (or any app) means, I hovered over it with my mouse and in ReadyFor, no tooltip would come up. It would work once or twice and then stop working until ReadyFor was restarted. This made ReadyFor less usable, especially in apps where hover functionality is crucial (Excel, Notion and a LOT of webapps too).
    Also, do you still need to use a button to pin windows to the side? I know it's a minor thing, but if we're calling ReadyFor better than Dex, its UI shouldn't be a step behind (or two, since Dex also allows dragging windows to corners and splitting the screen into quarters).

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 Год назад +2

      Dex has broken copying and pasting on Google docs. Dex has proprietary limitations on which keyboard you can use which really limits voice typing. I mean you can nitpick a few individual things of course in terms of bugs but Dex has plenty of them. But Motorola has native 4K support, it has purpose-built recent first party docks with active cooling. Samsung hasn't released a first party accessory in 6 years.
      Motorola actually references their desktop mode in their promotions, Samsung just ignores it. In fact 90% of the development for dex has come from good lock which isn't even available worldwide, and is not part of the native dex experience.
      Don't get me wrong I love dex. I'm always on the subreddit, I use a Galaxy tab everyday and I'm typing this on my old Note 9.
      But that's why I'm so invested in desktop modes and why I'm so excited Motorola is actually doing stuff with theirs and pushing Samsung to at least try and compete with someone.

      @JohnScigulinsky Год назад

      @@michaelcorcoran8768
      Obviously I share Juan's (and your) enthusiasm for desktop modes. I see them as a great way to replace cheap (or even mid-range) laptops or chromebooks and I'm a big supporter of the "one device to rule them all" idea (hence my use of Fold3 as a phone, tablet and computer). Before that Fold3, I loved my Moto Edge 20 pro. But everytime I tried to replace PC with ReadyFor, and a Windows app with an android or web app, I had to learn new icons, new functionality - and that's not possible when the tooltips/hints don't show up. And as I mentioned, Notion's workflow absolutely depends on things showing up when you hover over certain elements. So while yes, the "drag window to pin it to the side" is a nit-pick, mouse-hover functionality is definitely not.
      Yes, if the use case is "let me just watch some RUclips / play a game on my big TV", then ReadyFor is easier to setup, with its "mode selection". But as a Desktop Mode and a Windows replacement, it's still a little too rough around the edges. They should really try and bring the UI and shortcuts and overall feel of it closer to a Windows machine if they want to attract that crowd over. Obviously Dex has its own path to walk still and I whole-heartedly agree that GoodLock is a dumb way to develop Dex (at least Samsung has extended its availability to more countries now). They should steal Moto's approach of running it as an app, updateable independent of system updates.

      @michaelcorcoran8768 what bugs does Dex suffer from? Please explain because you just made an open blanket statement and talked about how you like Ready For more. Also, even if Samsung hasn't released a Dex accessory in years, they already had a dock with multiple types of ports and a cooling fan attached to the back. They even have wireless charging and allow you to adjust the angle of the phone.

    One more advantage of phone in desktop mode is less electric energy use. Phone is more efficient than even a laptop, while PC from the wall takes 25-50W (or more, with extra RGB and inefficient power supply). Windows makes it worse with "carbon saving" features, 100 useless processes running in background. Most of the time PCs are idle or low load - like viewing webpages, reading, writing, playing music or video; phone could handle that with less energy used.

      Ready For updates can be handled separately from OS updates, but every new feature then becomes phone dependent. I might have gotten a few of these prior to the OS update, but it all depends on when the update was pushed out to each different model of phone.
      It seems Android 13 starts us all off fresh with the same new features for Ready For.
