I work at the Sewer District and we always recommend that people keep the toilet lid shut because rats can get into your bathroom from the sewer. The toilet lid is your only line of defense to keep them out. Yes it's rare but it happens and they are in there believe me

when you flush the toilet numerous germs go into the air and closing the lid first stops many of the germs from getting all over the bathroom...toothbrushes etc. there are covers sold for your toothbrush so closing the lid and using cover on toothbrush helps with the yuck factor, hairbrushes and combs?????
