James Harden - Eurostep

- An emerging James Harden drew many comparisons to Manu Ginobili for obvious reasons, but the move that most noticed was the Eurostep. Now, he's in and possibly leading MVP discussions and he's still shaking guys up with that move. I didn't know exactly how to differentiate them but in every play, you'll notice one of these two things: the rip/windmill move and the sidestep/step-through.
For this video, I didn't go all the way back to his Thunder days (I don't even think any of these are from earlier than 2013) but there was more than enough. This isn't by any means a comprehensive compilation but remarkably, there are no James Harden Eurostep videos out there, so here's mine.
For the record, let's be real here: a few of these are travels. The footwork is impressive and James has been in the league a little while, so he knows how to get away with certain things. You can comment below on whether or not it's a travel, but the fact is that these were not called, so you know, if you won't celebrate his footwork, at least acknowledge he's doing it well enough to get away with it.

He uses that "gather step" so fucking well. In real time it looks like a travel but he always just SLIGHTLY plants his foot before he picks up the ball and then he takes 2 strides. Whoever taught him that is a fucking genius.

I think the first step he takes is called gather step then followed by the 1-2 euro step. That's why he always looked liked he was travelling but gather step is legal in nba.

Yeah, I used to think he traveled, but no. It's totally legal, just that he uses his steps more effectively than most players.
Yoooo some1 who actually watches and thinks be4 saying he travels! That’s cool, I see ppl saying his stepback and euro are travels, but if u watch closely, there’s a 0 step, so it’s 0, 1, 2. Crafty offense right there, and lots of other ppl use it but not as affectively as harden. That’s why he gets the most hate for it.
Most interesting one is the eurostep where he picks up his dribble, takes a hard right step, then he cuts with the left step and then finishes with the left hand... this is the best one because the ball is completely protected even though finishing with the off hand

James Harden is a trickster. He could fool refs with fouls and traveling, they aren't sure if he's doing it right or wrong this time around, not really sure, so they just let him be. This is an art itself.
as a lefty shooter who struggles driving I should definitely pay attention to James Harden euro and try to use it myself

I hope this gets disallowed quickly. Put this together with the no hand-check rule, you pretty much walk from 3 point for a lay up without pressure.

I believe more than a couple of those times Harden took a step after picking up his dribble and THEN did his one-two Euro step. It seemed on his drives starting from behind 3-pt line. Taking three long steps or adding a quick shuffle. SMH
Ryelander007 It's a travel in my opinion. Look at the last one the shook the guy, of course he's gonna bite left if you already took two steps in that direction but he takes a third step to the right which is what allows him to go by.
Agreed. As good as he is, I saw several travel steps not being called. Eurosteps are hard to judge especially in traffic. I hope the league or refs are more meticulous watching these non-calls.

Bian Chen hardens eurostep is a counter anyway after the pound he reads the defense if they bite he goes for a regular layup if they don't bite he'll counter with a euro
@@SaynTrades Im not seeing that. I see him committing to 1 side of the defender or the other in advance of the gather, with a pre-meditated eurostep line. And hes already mentally prepared for the contact regardless of which shoulder it comes on

Harden kind of relies on being sloppy. Dwayne/Manu slice in with sharp eurosteps and get a two with no foul, whereas Harden takes a huge step and goes right into traffic on purpose so he can get hand-checked and go to the line. Not saying that's bad, just saying that's his approach. So sometimes it gets messy and is a travel, but if a foul/travel occur simultaneously they normally call the foul instead.
Also Harden does a brilliant thing by swinging his arms up high. Watch his elbows go right near the defender's face, it makes them lean back and lose balance.
