    Thanks for this video, it really helped me understand what a business analyst does. I'm currently in college majoring in Information Technology with a focus on Data Analytics. Some of the things you explained in the video were concepts we learned in class. For example, I built a computer network and recommended software packages for business and explained why. Your video helps me because it's more in-depth. Thank you

    Great video. I have a degree in Economics and I believe, it might be more important to understand the clients business requirements then to be an expert in Python. why I say that: looking for an education or training as a BA almost all courses or university programs focus on coding instead of understanding business data and solutions of real business requirements. Excel, SQL, Phyton ect. are just tools then, but if you don't understand the business problem in the first place, you cannot help your client.

    • @freshestinclass763
      @freshestinclass763 2 года назад

      That would be something given the more you interact with clients... you can spend months doing mock problems... which is cool.. but a relationship with your tools of trade in depth is not bad also.

    This is the prefect kind of stuff for a PhD student like myself planning on moving into data science /analytics career to get a feel for where I need to focus on my skill development.
    Are you planning on making more videos like this for a data science /data analyst type roles specifically?
    It seems like data science /analyst are just a more niche aspect of the stuff in this video and probably more common in larger companies where 'business analytics' captures a broad range of disciplines, apart of which are data scientists /analysts.
    Am I on the right track there?

      Business analysis is not only a career; it is driven by passion and qualification.. lots of half literate engineers always circle around money and they start to bend towards what title offer more money. We find them saying - I want to do that. In reality they don't know a shit about that and neither 90 % of them are even qualified...
      if you ask them if they have any business degree to actually understand business ?? They will start giving some of highly lame answers.
      Most of half educated (or even less) indian engineers who don't like programming or want to earn more money tend to use these words as hiding the facts and pretend that they have real interest to become business analyst... While in real time on job they do nothing but to do System Analysis and getting things worse for organizations by zero value addition.

      Good question! The answer really is different based on each case. With this particular case, some of that 80% product are easy to add on services. Hi Jen and @thecareerforce, since I was stuck just below BA level, I just started an intensive 6 month course in Belgium at The Master Labs. We both learn Business and Functional Analyst. I just tried the quiz and got 'lateral positions' as a result. I somewhat expected this. The thing is, I was looking for a guidance towards either FA or BA to start with, so I can learn deeper on one of those paths before starting. Do you have a secondary quiz (or 3th party quiz) that can answer this ? Thanks in advance.

    • @TheCareerForce
      @TheCareerForce  4 года назад +1

      I don't have any additional quiz and I'm not aware of any third party quiz that goes deeper. Both FA and BA are good options. With a FA focus, you're going to have more limited jobs that you have the skills for, but you're also going to be a better match for those jobs. With a BA focus, you'll have a wider variety of jobs, but won't necessarily bring a specialty that makes you stand out more. Hope this helps.

    Do you see this as something of a threat?

    Hi, first of all, great video !!!
    Aside from the knowledge of BA activities, what languages or visualization tools a typical junior business analyst or entry level business analyst role might demand?
    From my own research, I came up with a list: Tableau, MS BI, BPMN, R & SQL. Is this accurate?

    Question...when and how do you get your hands on the data dictionary for the database you are working with? Do it happen that an IT person would be able to get that for you or do you request it in a different way without bothering the client?

    • @TheCareerForce
      @TheCareerForce  3 года назад +3

      Sometimes I get it from someone in IT. Many of the companies I work with don't even have an internal IT department though. In those cases, I'll work with whoever in the client's organization that's most familiar with the data. Even when I get it from IT, I usually set up a short meeting with someone familiar with the data. It's not uncommon for the data dictionary to not fully document every practical aspect of the data that I'd like to know.

    if you want to be a business analyst, which programming language should you first learn ? (I am new to any language)
    I googled this question, HTML , R , SQL, Python showed up. A bit overwhelmed, what should be my first step?

    • @soccerfp
      @soccerfp 3 года назад +6

      Excel, SQL,VBA and Python in that order. You need to know excel shortcuts and how to manipulate sheets quickly and effectively without having to search much on google. HTML is not needed.

      I agree with soccerFP I got my BA job only knowing advanced excel and experience with power BI. SQL was the next thing I had to learn. honestly I have seen many people land at least junior analyst jobs with just advanced excel. So master that first

    I'm not a fan of numbers, but am analytical/logical and use numbers a lot when thinking about personal financial goals and what time frame I need to accomplish those. I've been involved in sales for a while and have taken marketing and finance courses. I'm personable and enjoy a social work environment with more flexibility, I tend to think a lot as well about things; would i be considered a good candidate for business analyst role? I ask because I need to find a new job now and wanted to try something new, thank you

    Hi Jen,
    First off, I would like to thank you for putting up videos like this. Almost all of the "day in the life of a data analyst / business analyst / data scientist" videos out there try to be vlogs - apparently, it is important to know that data / business analysts make cheap ramen. Your video is a goldmine of relevant information for people looking to transition into this field. I appreciate that.
    Now my question is: What underlying concepts and tools should I know if I want to be able to help a company "standardize and optimize their pricing and quoting system". Did you do most of the work in Excel? Did you end up using any statistical software? Any Machine Learning concepts?

    • @TheCareerForce
      @TheCareerForce  4 года назад +4

      I can't believe I missed the ramen-making part of my day! 🤦 Vlogs can be fun to watch, but it does seem like most job day in the life videos focus very little on the actual job.
      For this particular project which was working with a small company with a relatively small amount of data, I mainly used Excel. If I was working with a larger dataset or more complex inputs, I would have used a statistical software (probably Python, but there are many equally good choices) to analyze trends and additional factors affecting sales conversions. For mocking up a flow and explaining the new pricing process, I used Lucidchart (again, plenty of other comparable mindmap tools exist).
