I think Toyota purposely make the interiors poor so that they can differentiate it from Lexus which is their luxury brand. But the car itself is such a carefree joy to own and run mechanically
It’s becuase they want people to buy up to the highlander. Each model is specifically “detuned” to make the customer consider spending more money on the next model up. Corolla - RAV4 - highlander - 2023 sequoia Tacoma - 2023 tundra Camry - Avalon / 2023/2024 crown In America
This car saved my life (suffered a straight 130 mph highway rear-end collision with a double roll-over, the car ending on it's roof). The interior is tactile-friendly, but I agree it's infotainment screen and overall design is ugly. All that aside, consider the safety- there is no better car in the world, I can luckily testify to that. Great review.
Not sure when 'hard' plastics became so undesirable. Never heard it mentioned until about 4 years ago and now it's the number one issue for all reviewers. Arm rests, sure, but I don't care if the dash is hard (normal) plastic as long as it is durable and easily cleaned.
People are getting softer nowadays. Don't want them to hurt themselves on the hard plastic lol! Jokes aside, my guess would be it's probably just a way for the industry as a whole to encourage people to buy new cars.
I think it's probably because the price of these vehicles have skyrocketed. 10 years ago all plastic whatever vehicle was like 15-20k now we're way over 30k for these and still using hard ass plastic.
The softer plastic is more forgiving when it comes to scratches and does have sort of a self healing effect where as the hard plastic scratches very easily and stays scratched till the day you take it to the scrap yard. Now ask me if I care? This is the best $ saving utility vehicle out there. Great gas, safe, affordable (compared to other options), legendary Toyota reliability and resale value, low cost of ownership and the list goes on. Simply put, if you're wanting something that will get you there now and 20 years from now with no hesitation, this is the one that will do it.
@@jeffferguson69 From my experience, it goes both ways. Sometimes the hard plastic cracks early under uv damage and sometimes it's the softer plastic but I have yet to experience seeing Toyota plastic cracking in the first 20 years of it's life. They make em right.
Having taken the rav4 for a recent test drive, I really enjoyed the interior. It feels unique yet not overly designed. Up to your personal taste. Controls are all easy to use while driving. The infotainment is not pretty and looks outdated but is very functional and easy to use (thanks to those physical buttons). Navigation also worked well with directions displayed on the heads up display, great feuture. Toyota may be lagging behind abit when it comes to tech compared to european rivals. But their whole philosophy is different. Toyota implement new tech when said tech is ready and bug free. Unlike slick but buggy tech in ID3 for example. The rav4 felt as premium as I would expect. It doesnt need to be volvo or Lexus because it isnt a luxury vehicle. Driving it feels confident, relaxing yet not at all boring. Add to that the reliability and economy. Would recommend to anyone!
The interior is PERFECT. I have a 2010RAV4 & a 2009 SIENNA. I am the first owner on both. The Sienna has been taken care as much as the RAV4, if not the SIENNA was actually babied more than the RAV4. The RAV4's plastic interior dash still looks like brand new. The Sienna's soft dash is starting to show some cracks. They are both garaged when not in use. We don't use windshield sunshades when we go out. Both were always kept dust free. We live in southern California, high UV and extreme heat during summer time. We don't really have time to put sunshades for every errands. They are now over over 10 years old and they both look new. But I'm afraid that the Sienna's dash will exponentially deteriorate in the next coming years. While the RAV4 will still look brand new.
Thomas is great, but I find your style of review just absolutely superb. Fantastic balance of facts, observations and opinion. I've seen hundreds of reviews from 20+ reviewers over the years. This is easily the best. I'd love seeing you more often on the channel!
This video shows a 2021 XSE hybrid, NOT 2022. Title is misleading. When was this filmed? Only thing announced in 9/2021 so far was the Rav4/hybrid Adventure trim and AFAIK it’s Europe only.
Like others said this is the 2021 Model, Toyota has not even revealed the 2022 Model yet. The 2022 model is not seeing design changes other then the headlights. It seems 2023 will be the design refresh
I don't mind the hard plastics as long as the usual touch points are soft and it looks ok to the eye.. I like that a lot of these materials are easy to wipe down.
Bought a 2022 Rav4 Hybrid XLE Premium about 3 weeks ago now. Coming from a 2019 Corolla SE to now this, have to say I'm loving the suv life. Currently averaging about 45mpg. After watching this video, I wish my Rav4 was two-toned colored.
Looking to get this car and I can say you aren't moaning or griping too much. This is great honest feedback that, as someone actively looking to spend a lot of money towards this car, is greatful for this insight.
Got a new RAV4 LE a couple of weeks ago. Was thinking that I wanted one just for its relatively low purchase price and reliability / durability. I've been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy driving it and its solidity. So far it's exceeding my expectations. We shall see as time goes on.
Well said about the satisfaction of owning Toyota RAV4. After owning a Tesla Model Y for 4 months I was really dissatisfied with build and ride quality and ended up trading to a 2021 RAV4 Prime.
I had no idea how capable the RAV4 was till last weekend, went out with my friend out in the harsh California desert, and it went everywhere my Toyota 4×4 Hilux went!!!
Hi great review! However, when you start talking about more premium Euro cars and the compare them to a Toyota, I think you’re already on a bias against the brand. With respect to Toyota buyers, I believe they see the brand as value for money. They didn’t start thinking “I want a BMW” and then buy a Toyota. There’s nothing wrong with this but just a mater of perspective. Just an opinion. Have a good day.
Agreed. I’m coming from a latest model BMW 320D and while I do enjoy the luxury side of things as well as the enjoyable drive, it is impractical for me which is why I’ve ordered a RAV4 AWD Hybrid. The BMW is very expensive on maintenance, can’t go off road and is limited for space inside. I’ve had to keep borrowing my fathers Toyota Prado for most things. I think I’ll be sticking to Toyota from now on. Why didn’t I go for a BMW X5 for my off-road adventures? Because I’d be laughed at by my fellow campers haha
I guess it depends where you live and what you need from the car. Where I am, the rav4 hybrid is the same price as an audi q3 sportback hybrid and for 10% extra u could even go for a Q5. I don't think the comparisons are so far-fetched.
This is not a 2022 Rav4. The 2022 updated Rav4 was just released with several updates such as a new designed LED headlight units, new rim design, new LED interior lighting, new USB-C ports, new available interior trims, new illuminated window switches.
That’s good to know bc I leased my 2021 thinking I would buy it but I think it needs to get updated so I’ll run the lease out and build my credit up for when I’m ready to purchase again
I had the previous diesel RAV4 and was only averaging 43mpg on dual carriageways and 60mpg plus in towns, I loved the ride, in January last year I changed it for a Hybrid 2.5ltr AWD new shape, am averaging 47mpg. It's an amazing car to drive. I agree with one of the comments below the door switches are not illuminated, can be very annoying at night along with the fuel button to open the cap. 9 times out of 10 I use an ipod and let it just iterate through my music son don't need to touch the display. It does have a habit of resetting all my tracks to number one the next time I get in Overall an excellent vehicle
Wow, I've watched entirely to many car reviews but this was great. i really appreciate your breakdown and opinion. thanks for a great video, and beautiful drive BTW.
Recently drove the Toyota Rav4 Plug-in Hybrid, they have addressed a lot of the comments in this video - acoustic windows as standard, fully digital cockpit, etc.
Main reason I didn't go with Toyota is due to the interior and technology and went with hyundai tucson. For the same price the hyunda is a substantial step up interior and technology wise.
I've had my AWD Black edition for month now and I do love driving it. I drove a BMW M! sport before that ( and a 30 year old V8 110 Soft top). One thing that does niggle me though is the lack of illuminated door switches . They are available on the 2022 version apparently. On my wish list would be Welcome headlights & remote start. I'm still well pleased and overall glad I blew my £37k on the Toyota rather than the X1.
your car should have remote start. first make sure the car is locked, then press the lock button rather quickly 3 time but hold it down on the 3rd press. Hold for about 5 seconds and your car should start.
I agree that drove me crazy not having my buttons on the door light up . I need to see my lock and unlock, I also don’t like that I can’t lock my truck while it’s running
I agree the interior has a lot to be desired. It’s almost like they have a good dependable car so they can deliver cheap looks on the interior and still sell Rave4’s. The monitor comments are spot on.
You hit it right on when you said made concessions when picking a RAV4. I went from a Mercedes BlueTec to a RAV4 because my check engine light came on every 8600 miles and I wanted reliability. I like the mileage 42.5 mpg. I do not like the front headlights when going downhill.
Toyota is all about durability and not fashion. Toyota’s generally don’t break over time. Many go 100K+ miles and still look the same. No cracks, nothing fails. I just purchased a new Rav4 Hybrid XLE Premium package. I traded a 2020 Toyota Highlander XLE AWD. I have put 4K miles on it and average 40MPG which I am happy about. It is well built, simple, durable, and works every day!
Finally, a review that shows the “not so small” details that I often find lacking in most reviews. Those items that you dislike would drive me crazy as a buyer. It’s amazing how these engineers and car designers mess up such essential everyday items. Absolutely ridiculous. The navigation screen is toy like in appearance, at best. Embarrassing. Thanks for the review.
Love my 2022 RAV4 Hybrid. XSE model with plenty of bells and whistles. Great smooth ride. Love the cruise and anti-collision and best of all the MPG… I have the same color combination as in the video…. Can’t recommend enough
I was a sales rep Australia and had my first Toyota Torago ,as my private car ,my work car I had 4 different models of Camrys . Then a Toyota Avalon .all great cars never let me down .
I wish the Rav hybrid had heads up display, wireless Apple CarPlay, and electric fold in side mirrors. I like that it seems like the controls are straightforward. I don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Can’t speak to the infotainment system as I haven’t gotten my vehicle yet. But I’m going from a 2008 Sonata that has no infotainment system or modern electronics so going to be a learning curve. At the end of the day, I ordered the RAV4 because I want reliability.
Ordered one today, got a Yaris right now and the Goldilocks stuff (and the horrible Infotainment) were true there too and the reason I stay on Toyota right now.
Fantastic rewiew. I i have owned my Rav4 in 6 month. It's a fantastic car. I agree with you about the infoteiment system. If you would like to zoom in, the arrow does'nt follow when you drive. Another thing that is annoying is the beeping. The plastic interior is ok for me, easy to clean if you have kids whith dirty shoes. The off road is good Eg. Boat trailing and snowy winter roads.
MPG difference between both drivetrains is negligible: Hybrid: 41city / 38 hwy Prime plug-in (HV mode) : 40city / 36 hwy (battery is “empty” at 20% capacity so you can drive 40 miles on EV mode only, then switch to HV mode)
I have on order the SE model. Heated steering wheel, heated seats, wiper deice, all weather mats. AWD. 40mpg. Toyota dependability. Who could ask for anything more?
Owning RAV4 hybrid XSE last 5 months is gasoline consumption averaging 4,5 to 5,4 l/100 km city/ highway combined. Fun to drive in Sport mode. Bad ( big selling point?) Remote App control and Help button stopped working and dealership try to figure out didn't get well. Waiting for Canadian winter ❄️ with new Continental ICECONTACT tires. Moreover fun.
It's interesting that the review doesn't consider scarcity. In Texas, sometimes power grids get shut down, sometimes there is a rush on gas. Plug in hybrid seems like the better option no matter what type of driving you do.
Had mine 8 months it grows on you good power 5.2 per 100k paid 54 k new second hand one with 6 k on it same year 2021 65 k As wait till 2023 for New one
I actually am throwing a party and telling all my friends about the new rav4 hybrid I bought. Coming from only buying fords- I’m thrilled to finally have a car that will save me costs in upkeep & breakdowns.
Thank-you for a great review... I agree, standard size drinking bottles should fit in all bottle storage areas... And there should be four areas in the front and in the back...
Watching this in early 2024 and it seems as though they’ve fixed your major downsides. New infotainment system and fully digital instruments (on all UK models anyway). I’ll be ordering one soon, in part thanks to your review.
I feel the water bottle in the door pocket complaint, although that you can get it in there at all after a little angling would still be an improvement over our 2018 Civic's front door pockets, which don't fit our bottles at all. It's such a minor issue, but still consistently annoying when you bring water with you everywhere.
Those are 18" wheels you're pointing out at the start btw. Also I think major gripes. The back door doesn't open wide enough to load kids in or elderly passengers easily. The grip position is too close to the hinge so that kids and not-so-strong adults will struggle to close the door. The infotainment resolution is utter iPhone 3G quality and I'm being kind. Agree on the dials as it's just a mish-mash trying too hard. Also agree with those tiny buttons on the audio and HVAC system. I have to look hard at the HVAC system to increase/decrease the fan. After a year, I can't remember how many buttons from the side is to decrease the fan. Same with the buttons at the driver's knee. Why does auto high beam need to be on the outer edge where you could use that button without looking down and around the steering wheel. I think the surround view button would be something you'd use more frequently and need access in a time critical manner. Although it is easily fixed with cutting out the "keys" they've designed to try to force you to put the buttons in their layout. Also the cruise control buttons are made worse than the old stalk. Previously each action had a specific function. (Flick up - Speed up/Resume, flick down - Speed down/set, pull back - Cancel, push forward - Non radar cruise mode, push in - Cruise on) and now, it's push - cruise on, push - decrease speed / set, push - increase speed / resume, push - cancel, push & hold - Non radar cruise mode). This is why the Eco, normal and power button works so well because each action had a specific function that you can use by touch. *Owner's rant over*.. for now
"Cheap stereo from the 80'"? That was the best era. I prefer physical buttons to all the new-fangled touchscreens. Some of us like old-fashioned things. I don't care what the interior looks like as long as the vehicle is SAFE and RELIABLE.
i don't think you criticise too much brian, i think everybody should rate cars, with the care you do, but since vw and skoda charge 10k more for their cars, which even more cheap plastics and glossy black cheap touchfields, toyota isn't doing a terrible job, but since toyota and vw are the biggest players worldwide, are extremely successful and use a lot of hard plastics, i am afraid this won't change so quickly, maybe with EVs like ev6, ionic 5 and bmw i3, which use a lot of recycled plastics or surfaces made of bottles, I don't mind such plastics, but i really do mind fresh new hard plastics, also sadly in mercedes and audis...

Great review...Nice to hear someone saying good things about a car ...it will certainly be on my very short list ..thanks
Good choice!
good video mate, I'm waiting on my RAV4 Hybrid, but can you tell me where did you record this video? the landscape is amazing.
Looks like Switzerland 😉
Finally, a review that shows the “not so small” details that I often find lacking in most reviews. Those items that you dislike would drive me crazy as a buyer. It’s amazing how these engineers and car designers mess up such essential everyday items. Absolutely ridiculous. The navigation screen is toy like in appearance, at best. Embarrassing. Thanks for the review.
The interior is practical. For the money the people buying these expect long term reliability and safety and not top end luxury and comfort.
Exactly
Well said!
Love my 2022 RAV4 Hybrid. XSE model with plenty of bells and whistles. Great smooth ride. Love the cruise and anti-collision and best of all the MPG… I have the same color combination as in the video…. Can’t recommend enough
Thanks for sharing!
I was a sales rep Australia and had my first Toyota Torago ,as my private car ,my work car I had 4 different models of Camrys . Then a Toyota Avalon .all great cars never let me down .
My 2022 hybrid gets 40 mpg- he failed to mention mpg in this lengthy presentation.
Does anyone give info about fuel consumption for the real world? Planning to buy 2022 awd hybrid
I fell in love with the Rav4 in 2002, and haven't looked at anything else since.
Great video. Where is the scenery?👋
The Alps
Great video! Really sloppy intro lol.
The wheels on 2022 XSEs are different from the ones in the video..
Do you know if they have upgraded the interior materials for the Prime model?
MPG difference between both drivetrains is negligible:
Hybrid: 41city / 38 hwy
Prime plug-in (HV mode) : 40city / 36 hwy (battery is “empty” at 20% capacity so you can drive 40 miles on EV mode only, then switch to HV mode)
So? When you drive 40 miles per day then it is 0city/0why for the plug-in version.
I have on order the SE model. Heated steering wheel, heated seats, wiper deice, all weather mats. AWD. 40mpg. Toyota dependability. Who could ask for anything more?
Is the ride as smooth as the highlander?
Owning RAV4 hybrid XSE last 5 months is gasoline consumption averaging 4,5 to 5,4 l/100 km city/ highway combined. Fun to drive in Sport mode. Bad ( big selling point?) Remote App control and Help button stopped working and dealership try to figure out didn't get well. Waiting for Canadian winter ❄️ with new Continental ICECONTACT tires. Moreover fun.
Very nice review. Thank you. I just placed a $500 U.S. deposit towards a 2023 RAV4 hybrid Limited. Wait time: 4 to 6 months!
Very nice!
Wife and are thinking about buying one. What’s your thoughts on the stock infotainment system? Hehe
What is the Lexis version of the rav4?
Not only does it do well now when new even when old eg 15y with over 200km you'll find it will still perform without any faults
You forget to mention the Hybrid AWD system in comparison to the Normal (non hybrid) AWD system in Toyota Rav4
I actually am throwing a party and telling all my friends about the new rav4 hybrid I bought. Coming from only buying fords- I’m thrilled to finally have a car that will save me costs in upkeep & breakdowns.
If Toyota made it look just a little like an Audi or a Merc or even a Porsche - nobody would buy anything else.
Honestly, great review!
Is fuel presence in the oil engine still an issue in this car? Toyota says its normal... that some petrol gets to the oil in the engine..
Where is the starting battery?
Was there anything new from the -21 model? From the intro I thought this would be at least a face lift, but there was nothing really. Misleading.
Nice Review, how tall are you?
Great job. Enjoy your style of delivering information. First time viewer I've thumbed up and subscribed. Cheers from Nova Scotia
Considering swapping my 2022 Volvo XC60 for one of these as fed up with issues.
can you tell me a bit about your xc60 issues?
water botle fit is actually good. Not moving around
The simply fact is these cars have the best resale value by a mile and have the lowest running costs.! That appeals to logical car buyers.
I feel that you did a great video covering this car.
Which is this place Dude?
why have a wireless charging pad if you have to plug in your phone for androis auto/apple carplay anyway, it will charge then
But how do you feel about the infotainment system?!
Grande auto. Design ancora più bello ora di quando è uscita. Buon mix di molte qualità, pur con dei difetti. Buona recensione.
I just love this car. We're doubting between rav4 and carolla cross
What is more solid than a RAV4? I mean, excluding the body on frame SUVs.
What about wireless carplay...?
I feel the water bottle in the door pocket complaint, although that you can get it in there at all after a little angling would still be an improvement over our 2018 Civic's front door pockets, which don't fit our bottles at all. It's such a minor issue, but still consistently annoying when you bring water with you everywhere.
This doesn’t look like the 2022 model?
*Owner's rant over*.. for now
What is that !/4 Glass for
"Cheap stereo from the 80'"? That was the best era. I prefer physical buttons to all the new-fangled touchscreens. Some of us like old-fashioned things. I don't care what the interior looks like as long as the vehicle is SAFE and RELIABLE.
i don't think you criticise too much brian, i think everybody should rate cars, with the care you do, but since vw and skoda charge 10k more for their cars, which even more cheap plastics and glossy black cheap touchfields, toyota isn't doing a terrible job, but since toyota and vw are the biggest players worldwide, are extremely successful and use a lot of hard plastics, i am afraid this won't change so quickly, maybe with EVs like ev6, ionic 5 and bmw i3, which use a lot of recycled plastics or surfaces made of bottles, I don't mind such plastics, but i really do mind fresh new hard plastics, also sadly in mercedes and audis...
very informative video. thank you!
WHATS THE MPG
You are absolutely right about the interior!
Nice review!
Great review, trying one today.
Brian is back!
