This performance was meant to be mimed like all musicals but she insisted on doing it live ...god she was right. ..still gives me shivers. ..absolutely peerless ...
It’s half live sadly, really wish she had performed the second half live as the first half while she’s crying is so moving. I understand it would be hard to move into ‘pretty sounds’ after giving such a raw performance of crying, so understand why the second half is mimed to her pre-recording but we should be honest too and say it’s ‘half live’.
This closing scene of the movie clinched her Oscar win. For all the other reasons the Academy loved it, the Academy has always prized an ability to cry actual tears, on camera. These days, it's almost a lost part of the art of acting.

@@pamelacolletti8553 My Man was not in the original Broadway version of Funny Girl., which is why the song isn’t in the current version of the Broadway musical. The song was so personal to Fanny Brice, as it describes her love and devotion to her real life husband, Nick Arnstein. Since Fanny owned the song, Funny Girl producer Ray Stark (Fanny’s son-in-law) was not allowed to use the song while Fanny was alive, as Fanny simply would not allow the use of the song to anybody for any reason. It is scenes like this that demonstrate why Streisand is a legend. At the AFI Awards, she explained that she recorded the complete song a month or so before filming, same as virtually all Hollywood musicals, and everyone liked it……except HER! She felt that it needed to be done live for emotional effect. The first part is sung live, the second part is lipsynched to the tape from the movie-score sessions. It was definitely not taken from her older My Name is Barbra record! I love how subtle but how profound her transformation is from where she started. It's not the ugly duckling turned into a swan, it's the ugly duckling SEEING ITSELF as a swan. The way she holds herself, the more delicate make up and hairstyle and jewelery, not because times are changing which is true, but because she doesn't need to hide herself anymore. The color black not because she's grieving for the life she's lost but because black is quiet, and she no longer needs to be loud to make people listen to her. She's a mom now, she knows that this is the greatest act she'll ever perform, nothing that being on stage can ever come close to. That's what makes this moment so moving and why this movie is close to perfection. A stunning song and a fucking stunning woman, wow.

My Man, great song sung by Barbra Streisand in her great movie Funny Girl 1968 William Wyler, my favorite Barbra Streisand movie along with another of her great musical movies Hello Dolly 1969 Gene Kelly, movies I would never get tired of watching. This great song My Man is also sung in a Spanish adaptation by the actress and singer Sara Montiel in one of her best fiims La Violetera 1958.
My favorite part from the movie is when Barbra sings "funny girl" but "my man" is also incredible. Barbra is a true legend and the best vocalist in history (outside of the opera world). By the way, why isn't anyone talking about excellent video quality? Barbra 💜💜💜
This is the best vocal performance of any kind that I have ever heard. I get chills when she hits the not at 1:56 everytime I listen to this and I've heard it at least 100 times. I can still remember the first time in the theater in 1968 when I was 12.

I am crying as I type this, Babs singing this song catapults me back to when I was TRULY in love! I'll never love like that again but when STREISAND belts out THIS SONG, I'm back in love again. Thank you, Barbra, thank you~
Wow. Barbra is brilliant. A total, artistic performance. She’s without peer, really. But it’s the genius of William Wyler in this scene that’s underappreciated and too often overlooked. Here's my purely subjective analysis: Wyler starts the song by placing Barbra directly in front of two columns of lighted stage decoration, not only setting basic spatial orientation of her on stage, but symbolically representing the emotional pillars she needs to follow through with a performance in her fragile state. 0:08 As she struggles her way to the end the recitative first stanza, Wyler cuts to a different angle, and the columns shift to the stage right of the frame - our left - and she proceeds to enter the second stanza. Her reliance upon the support is diminishing.0:59. As she surrenders herself ever more into the song, she reaches a key lyrical point of self-abandonment - "...But I don’t care, when he takes me in his arms....” - and the columns are removed entirely from the frame as Wyler shifts the camera to our left. This, of course, eliminates any spatial orientation, and figuratively represents that the columns have become superfluous. This places Barbra in virtual darkness (with only low-key lighting of her face and hands from above), as she raises her arms in rapturous anticipation of her man. 1:48 With each successive line, she increasingly loses any sense of self, to the point where she actually disappears from view. Quick fade to black. 2:04 And they say Wyler was just a craftsmen. Yeah, right...
She is truly one of the greatest representatives in demonstrating the beauty of the English language. She turns our language into such a powerful pallete of emotional beauty. It's talent like this that shows to the world that if there was one language you had to pick to show off your singing voice it would be difficult to challenge English as the language of choice.
Do you realize how insanely hard it is to hit and keep these notes while crying? Next time you’re weeping, try to sing. You’ll see how incredible this performance truly is. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
I loved her growing up in the 1970s. Frequent trips to Sam Goody's to buy her latest album or single. I had no idea she was a legend in the 1960s. This performance mesmerized and left me in tears.

Just chills!!!! Noone can carry a note like Barbra and belt out a song so effortlessly the way she does!!! That's why her concerts were always sold out!! This is CLASS!!!! Beyond!!! Love her!!!❤
Una volta un mio amico mi ha detto....o e' vera, o sa fingere molto bene. Barbara e' stata autentica, stupido! Era innamorata di Omar Sharif. Solo una donna innamorata puo' arrivare a tanto. ❤
you deserved every moment of praise you got for this performance.
No Words to explain
My Man, great song sung by Barbra Streisand in her great movie Funny Girl 1968 William Wyler, my favorite Barbra Streisand movie along with another of her great musical movies Hello Dolly 1969 Gene Kelly, movies I would never get tired of watching.
This great song My Man is also sung in a Spanish adaptation by the actress and singer Sara Montiel in one of her best fiims La Violetera 1958.
I just love her❤
One of the greatest ending scenes - and musical scenes - in Film History.
Mrs. Streisand is the one. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🍾💫
And William Wyler, director, once again scores a great hit.
Barbra is beautiful inside and out. ❤
OUR PRECIOUS BARBRA STREISAND
WITH ONE OF HER DIAMOND MASTERPIECES WHO BUILD THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES !!!
That's right Barbra!!! You just showed the world how to win an OSCAR in 2 minutes !!!!!
One of the greatest songs ever created in the history of music.
Wow. Do you remember shaking with emotion, laughing in hysterics, and then crying in a movie theater? I do. It was this movie.
What a gift her talent has been for the world! She has a natural talent. There are only a handful of singers who can do that.
Luckily I don’t follow much of todays music. But I know one singer who can be almost iconic as Barbra. Idina Menzel
When she hits that “alright” my soul left my body
My favorite part from the movie is when Barbra sings "funny girl" but "my man" is also incredible. Barbra is a true legend and the best vocalist in history (outside of the opera world). By the way, why isn't anyone talking about excellent video quality?
Barbra 💜💜💜
It is a lovely video. Which tune is called "funny girl?" I didnt know the movie had a title song
This is the best vocal performance of any kind that I have ever heard. I get chills when she hits the not at 1:56 everytime I listen to this and I've heard it at least 100 times. I can still remember the first time in the theater in 1968 when I was 12.
I love her here takes me back. We were all crying in the movies. Just like her star 🌟 is born ending. Still #1
The single greatest ending to a musical ever!!!!!!
Barbra's eyes...oh my....sooooooo gorgeous! THAT powerful voice too...
Such an amazing singer holy moly
My aunty Maggy took me to see this at the pictures I thinks it is safe to thank her now. Thankyou aunty Margaret 😏
Je n'oublierai jamais Barbra Streisand, oh Barbra, merveilleuse Barbra. Barbara est intemporelle.
I love this movie. I have since I was a kid. Barb is brilliant....the absolute love she had for "Nick", her bravery is exceptional. Get chicks, reckon there's many who have felt this.. I'm 41 lol like the classics but still sort of young ❤❤❤❤be strong heartbroken ladies
Incredible voice with honesty
It should be illegal for one person to be so damn talented! Gives me goosebumps! Love Barbra!
I was 13 when I first saw this at the cinema, I couldn't believe what I was seeing (& hearing), electrifying & mesmerising - and very wonderful.
Love or hate her, there's no denying her talent. Streisand is the standard by which popular singers are measured.
Why would anyone hate bs???? 😕 Ridiculous.
Even Idina Menzel
Sie ist wahrlich eine Legende
Mein Sohn hat mein Herz und Gregory R.Wiseman ist mein Mann in meinem Herzen
I am crying as I type this, Babs singing this song catapults me back to when I was TRULY in love! I'll never love like that again but when STREISAND belts out THIS SONG, I'm back in love again. Thank you, Barbra, thank you~
A brilliant and stellar moment in cinematic history. This will forever go down in history as one of the greatest moments ever in the cinema.
Love is Powerful more than anything💚
Wow. Barbra is brilliant. A total, artistic performance. She’s without peer, really. But it’s the genius of William Wyler in this scene that’s underappreciated and too often overlooked. Here's my purely subjective analysis:
Wyler starts the song by placing Barbra directly in front of two columns of lighted stage decoration, not only setting basic spatial orientation of her on stage, but symbolically representing the emotional pillars she needs to follow through with a performance in her fragile state. 2:04
And they say Wyler was just a craftsmen. Yeah, right...
The visual was brilliant .
She is truly one of the greatest representatives in demonstrating the beauty of the English language. She turns our language into such a powerful pallete of emotional beauty. It's talent like this that shows to the world that if there was one language you had to pick to show off your singing voice it would be difficult to challenge English as the language of choice.
It's quite a big claim to make..how about operas? Aren't the Italian/German/French languages able to show off one's singing voice too?
@@lepetitchat123 They were talking about English specifically...
One of my all time favorite songs. So emotional. Loved these two movies of her doing Fanny Brice. GREAT!
This is one of my many favorite Barbra Streisand songs 🎵 ❤️ 🥹 her voice is so beautiful! Oh my man I love him so❤S
“what’s the difference if i say, i’ll go away, when i know that i’ll come back on my knees one day.” always takes me home
Do you realize how insanely hard it is to hit and keep these notes while crying? Next time you’re weeping, try to sing. You’ll see how incredible this performance truly is.
They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.
Real real real, non-fake Broadway. Worth the ticket for once . So long, HAMILTON.
Her best moment in film.
The best of the best always❤
I loved her growing up in the 1970s. Frequent trips to Sam Goody's to buy her latest album or single. I had no idea she was a legend in the 1960s. This performance mesmerized and left me in tears.
This authentic. I know those tears are real. She really had to pull that out of her soul. Have you ever tried to sing when you were crying? The best.
