    Dude I really appreciate the points about goal setting. I always end up starting a piece with an idea where I’m like “this is gonna be so cool I’m so excited!” And then I get halfway through and I have literally no idea where I actually wanted to end up with the drawing, only that the idea seemed neat. Having a goal to work towards adds great stability with piece, even if the end result isn’t quite the idea I had in mind at the beginning, at least I’d be working towards something to improve or enjoy in the long run.

      For some reason this seems easy for students in a classroom setting because they assume I’m going to give assignments such as this one. Honestly it’s something anyone can do on their own and get the same benefit out of it too.

    I've been looking at art videos for procreate lately because i'm working on a project, and I just found your channel. So far, especially with this video, I love how you're not instructing us on the RIGHT way to make art, you're encouraging us to make art in our own ways and to find our own strengths and styles, and that just gave me such a nice encouraging feeling. Thank you for the exercise suggestion and for the boost in encouragement and inspiration!

      At some point the illustration is going to tell you what it needs. Even when working from reference like this. There’s always a moment when you have to drop what you want the piece to be for what it clearly wants to be. Too often we stand in the way of our own art when it’s so close to showing us what we need to see.

    I love the idea that we should make a story in the art and everything we do in the drawing needs to convey that. A simple, probably obvious point, but a good reminder!

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  2 года назад +1

      Art is usually about one thing the artist wants to say. Making any artwork better is just about getting that message across. Sometimes it’s polishing existing elements but more often than not it’s about getting rid of everything that is getting in the way of that story.

    I feel like the main thing I struggle with is actually finishing these projects that start. My WIP folder is about 10x bigger than my finished artwork folder. I have one more big project in mind that I really want to focus on, but I will use the tips in this video to help me ACTUALLY finish it. I want to work on just two main things for this painting, and not my usual 10-20 goals that I have.
    Also, I have a question for you as an art teacher. What do you do when a student is a perfectionist? I have been struggling for so long to stop my perfectionism, and I can't seem to do anything about it. I spend far, far too long on the details, and end up going through this cycle of spending 20 hours on a project and finishing barely any of it, and I am never even happy with the parts I do finish. Usually what happens is I just give up and work on another project that I am destined to not finish. Do you have any tips to prevent this (other than the ones from this video)? Thank you so much for reading this!

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  2 года назад +6

      I know I’m repeating myself to some of you out here but to get rid of perfectionism you have to keep publishing your work. Everyone has to go through the dip in Dunning-Kruger curve. And it will suck, a lot. There’s no way for me to make that part any easier except that I can say it doesn’t last forever.
      Perfectionism is literally just really fancy fear disguised as a virtue. The mind is trying to hold us in the state of mind that we are in when we begin practicing any skill. Deep down we know the dip is coming and it’s going to be painful. However after we get to the bottom it’s always rewarding to keep discovering new things. Practicing art will never bring mastery but it I can promise that there’s endless discovery. It’s worth the fall and that’s why this exercise includes tool on how to piece your confidence back together because it’s your job to do it on your own. No comment on the internet on your art a job or an art award, no matter how flattering they might be, can do it for you.
      I’m not Bob Ross. I’m not here to tell you that art and creativity is easy. But I will always say that it’s worth the effort. For everyone.

      @@angrymikko Thank you so so much for this. I can't begin to explain how much you have already helped me with art, and this comment makes it even better. It is really good to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Your philosophy on art is so different to anything else I have seen, and it works so well compared to others. I think changing the way I think about art will be the first major step to reaching the end of this tunnel. Sorry if this makes no sense, just know how much I appreciate you making these videos and for replying to my comment in such a nice way :)

      Definitely the default round brush 100%. You get the most out of this exercise that way. I MAKE my students use that in this assignment. I can’t tell you what to do as this is a free video on the internet but I can tell from years of doing this assignment that I’ve seen the best results from this exercise on courses where the round brush at 100% hard edges (if done in ps) was not optional.

    great video!!! and amazing art work.
    my biggest issue with digital art, and the reason i usually end up avoiding it, is that i don’t understand the layering of pieces. for example, should color blocking all be on one layer, when do you know to color block specific things on one layer but do other ones on another. i guess in my head i just wish i had a set order to follow but when i actually open procreate i forget everything and get overwhelmed lol

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  2 года назад +2

      There’s nothing stopping you from starting with just one layer. I flattened everything down here near the end too to just 2 layers simply because it keeps the painterly look consistent. Also you can just lock a layer by swiping it left if you want to avoid accidentally painting on your drawing layer.

    • @Breanna.L
      @Breanna.L 2 года назад

      I usually use 1-3 layers. A sketch, background and the piece. I keep it simple so I can focus on the drawing and not the settings.
