Symptoms and Stages Of A Migraine

  • Dr. Newman explains the four stages of a migraine attack and common symptoms. The classic symptom of the migraine headache is that it is a one-sided headache.
Dr. Newman: In general, there are four stages to a migraine attack, the prodrome, the aura, the headache itself, and then the postdrome. About 60% of patients experience the prodrome although in fact many of them do not realize it.
Prodromal symptoms includes such things as hyperactivity, decreased ability to sleep. In some people sluggishness or yawning, some people notice they become crabby, they urinate more frequently, they crave certain foods, and often they start to have a heightened awareness of their senses.
So, light seem brighter, sound seem stronger, and they start complaining that their family is too louder, or the workplace is too loud when in fact nothing has changed. They are just more sensitive to it.
The second face the aura, and interestingly many doctors and many patients also think you need to have an aura to have migraine headache, but in fact aura is fairly rare.
Only about 20% of migraine suffers experience the aura, and by definition the aura is a transient or a short lived disturbance in some function in the neurologic ability.
Usually, it is a visual disturbance so people will see sparkling lights, or shooting stars, or zig zag lines that blot out their vision. Some people may notice they become numb on their face, or on their hand, on the side around the opposite side of their headache, and still other people may notice they have trouble speaking.
The next stage of migraine not surprisingly is the headache, and the classic symptom of the migraine headache is that it is a one-sided headache. It tends to be throbbing or pounding, moderate to severe in intensity, but it is not just the head pain that makes the headache of migraine a migraine.
It is what associated with the headache. People during migraine experience nausea. They may vomit, they may have sensitivity to light, or to sound, or to smell, and in fact all they really want to do during a migraine headache is to shut the door, and close the lights, pull the blankets over their head and try to sleep.
In fact hibernation is one of the features of migraine that is not appropriately treated. The last stage of migraine is called the postdrome and it is this vague sensation almost like a hangover where your body aches. You have a limited ability to think, to eat, to act normally, and you are still just not yourself.
Taken in total, the entire complex of migraine can last as short as four hours which is pretty long to as long as three to four days. So, it is an overwhelming sensation. If you suffer from migraine, you are not alone.
Migraine affects about 11% of the country, or more than 30 million Americans. If you think you are one of those migraine sufferers, you should call your doctor, and if necessary you refer to a neurologist or other headache specialist.

i suffer with migraine quite frequently and i think my mom passed it onto me as she used to get them when she was young. once you throw up that green shit and your migraine slowly goes away is the best feeling. just finished a full day of battle.

Turns out that mine wasn't actually migraine, but intracranial hematoma. Went into surgery a month ago, spent 12 days in the hospital 5 of which in the ICU, thankfully got out alive but was a close call. Symptoms all matched an aura migraine, so get yourself checked properly when you get these sypmtoms!

Go to a kind of doctor that will take tests on you to see what medical thing you need. When i did this, she told me to hold my hand on the desk so she could touch me with a little thing that scanned me for what kinds of foods ans stuff i can't have or something elsw i don't remember, but at the end, she gave me a little glass where it was called "Echinaforce" and then i now havw to take 3 small drops from it with a spoon. It tastes nasty as hell, but i haven't gotten a Migraine for over 2 years now. I REALLY recommend it. (I know it's hard to believe but it works!)
Btw, i didn't remwmber what kind of doctor it was, just ask your parents if there is any place or doctor that tests you to give you the right treatment.

I used to have migraines at school and had to go home a ton
When I had migraines my right hand would go dead my speaking would get messed up. And it would feel like someone was hammering my head. I think I finally figured out why I had migraines only at school and I’m no doctor but I think stress and noise would cause them see my class was the noisiest class in the school and I was the only quiet one

My experience with migraines; I am 20 years old, and I started getting migraines around middle school so when I was about 13 to 14. Before watching this video I didn’t know what it was called, the disturbance in vision; sparkly, fast moving flashes of nothing. It was bizarre. Every time I experienced The Aura I knew what was about to happen. I get migraines about once every three-6 months so I’m a little fortunate it doesn’t happen too often. It would start with the aura, that would last about 20 minutes, Followed by a headache that lasts at most 3 to 4 days.. Gradually decreasing in intensity and pain. The first day is always the worst. It just happens randomly I don’t know what would be the trigger.. maybe my diet? Not sure. Main point of this story.- I had no clue what the ‘disturbance in my vision’ prior to the Migraine headache was called. The Aura sums it up perfectly. Ugh I hate Migraines so much. Thanks for reading my rant. Love you guys!

Almost similar to mine. I get a migraine in 2-4 months. For me, I guess the trigger factor is stress. It's not like whenever I get stressed I get a migraine.

Thank you! My teachers say high schoolers are too young to have migraines, but my mom and I both have horrible migraines. Mine usually last hours (which is a long time to me because it mostly happens at school) and the stages of my migraines tend to start with the loss of my peripheral vision and then numbness of the hands (sometimes paired with a swollen or numb tongue) and then a headache (sometimes paired with nausea) but the teachers at my school don’t understand what the difference between a migraine and a headache is so they just shrug it off when sometimes I can’t see or write so I literally can’t do my work.

I only have a really bad headache and the want to sleep frequently. I don't know if it's just a really bad headache combined with me being a little sick. I have a headache and I feel warm. I don't think being warm is a symptom of a migraine, but whatever it's is, I don't feel good. I had to be picked up early from school today. Luckily it's the last day of school for the 1st semester so I don't have to worry about that until January.

      I'm spreading this btw.

I payed attention to the symptoms I get during the prodrome phase: I get irritable very easily, and have trouble concentrating. trouble is, yeah, I can't tell when tis happening. So I told everyone that if I seemed to be unusually upset over something that's really not an issue to let me know immediately. Then i can take medicine ahead of time. Won't stop the pain, but reduces it enough so that pulling out my own eye doesn't seem like a logical solution to the pain.

I was diagnosed with vestibular migraines about two years ago after a head injury. I'm still on amitriptyline and the vestibular migraines have slowed down their frequency to once or twice a month. They used to last for close to a week. It starts with a constant high pitched tone in the left side of my head, then a day later an adrenaline rush kicks in and stays for hours (feels like someone is electrocuting you with a 9 volt but all over, it's a jittery feeling), then nausea, can't find the words to speak (I can write with no problem), visual disturbances such as yellow rectangular blocks in my vision, light trails, etc, nausea but I never have thrown up, then a period of extreme dizziness, worry, impending doom, then it will leave me feeling drained.
More recently I'm getting the day before with the tinnitus but when it is in the middle of an attack it's super loud, I get a wave of tingling that starts on the left side of my abdomen and sweeps to the right side with 3-4 seconds, then I feel lightheaded like I'm going to pass out, I can't track things with my eyes and it makes the feeling of impending doom right there in my face. I walked outside to get fresh air and as my eyes were following the cars on the street it almost seems like they were skipping along, like a choppy movie missing frames. Instant nausea and overwhelming feeling of dizziness, panic, and fear. Lately it's been lingering into the next day, the feeling of dizziness and disconnected feeling.
Does all this fit into a "migraine" because I get no actual headache.

This is usually couples with a nauseous feeling in my chest and my throat feeling tighter. Then I will get this unignorable pain on one side of my head. Usually from my neck wrapping around one side of my head up to my eye socket. It can throb or just burn. I'm going to get it checked soon. I woke up and felt like someone hit me in the head with a hammer, my jaw and neck on the right felt like they where going to pop open. But the NAUSEA omg helllllll. My face was cold and clammy and my hands shook, I ended up throwing up. Slept again for like 4 hours. I woke up and the symptoms has lessened but still couldn’t move any movement caused throbbing head pain and nausea. In short it started at 4pm: I could only eat my dinner at 23:45.... HORRIBLEEEE

I've been at my limits with migraines. My last migraine lasted for 1 yr & 4months. Everyday all day. Very minimum relief. A few minutes here and there within the day where I'd go completely numb n the pain would go away. I've been to many Dr's all tell me its just something I have to live with. I'm currently on 1yr and 2 & 1/2 months with my present migraine and have been suffering for the past 9 yrs total. Is there any treatment or medicine that will be at least 75% effective? I'm desperate!!!

Have you gone to see doctor? Usually if you have head issues like a migraine for that long it indicates a deeper level issue that needs to be figured out. I had a severe migraine for a week straight and we went to the hospital, and they did a full head MRI to see if there was anything clearly wrong. I ended up being fine, the doctor just prescribed a different medication and it worked. So I suggest you do that if its lasting that long. Not a normal migraine.

Hey Caleb. I've been to neurologists, had MRI done, been to several doctors and have been on so many meds it's starting to get to the point that I'm really running out of options. I've been to the e.r. only to have them tell me that I can stay to continue to get pumped with meds or I can go home and basically deal with it! How sad is that...worse both hospitals In my area tell me that. I live in a small town so not many more doctors I can see.

I'm sorry, that sounds terrible. The one that lasted a week for me felt like hell. I can't imagine having one linger for as long as yours do. I hope you can find some ways of relief. Have you done Botox before/ had it recommend?
