I’ve always used my PlayStation consoles as my entry level disc players. Literally the PS1 was my first CD Player then PS2 for DVD, and PS3 for Blu-Ray. I’ve usually bought dedicated hardware later in the lifespan, but for getting started on a new format, PlayStation has always done right by me!
It’s Sony’s standard operating procedure, include a new proprietary format that they own major stock in, having helped invent it. I remember back when the first “best seller” Sony had on the PlayStation was “The Matrix!” 😂
@@ralaun2000today not really since the PS5 doesn't have Dolby Vision on 4K BD and the PS4 Pro didn't even support 4K discs while Microsoft's Xbox One S and Xbox One X do support it. I remember the PS3 Bluray player got significantly better as time went on with firmware updates. One of the nice features was that it was updated frequently. Hope this is the case with the PS5.

Thanks. Running all of my blu rays and UHD 4Ks on the dedicated Sony X700 paired with an A80J screen. I can confirm that the upscaling is better using the X700 over my PS5. Some other features worth mentioning: 24p mode, Dolby Vision, fast menu load times, the ability to check audio and video bitrates on the fly and visually confirm audio output format.
I use an Xbox One s as my Blu-ray player so I can offer a few notes for that, Xbox has 24p support, you just have to turn on in the console settings, and it has the ability to check video and audio bit rates on the fly, it's just locked behind clicking the right stick on a controller for some reason, and there's no button in the player UI to get there.
I was lucky to get an X700 on clearance for $100 recently. It's a great player but I did run into the intermittent freezing that's been reported with it by others. Maybe 2 - 3 times during some movies (not all though), the X700 would just suddenly freeze when playing UHDs. I didn't notice it on bluray. I ran the firmware update and thought that might help but it did not. After reading more into it, I saw others online had resolved the freezing issue by turning off the 24p mode. I turned this off as well and haven't seen the freezing happen since.
@@requiett Whats more infuriating, is that, one x700 can skip and freeze horribly making disks unwatchable (BTTF trilogy 4k), it can work totally fine on another x700 player. I have two, so I was able to test this. It baffled me. Both have their original firmware.
@TBoogy3 Yes, but unfortunately a lot of the auto calibrarion sometimes is not correct. For instance I previously had one of those Sony TVs that the PS5 auto calibrated to, but it wasn't correct and I had to set it myself anyway. And doesn't that auto calibration only apply to the consoles HDR calibration screen? Which hardly any games use. It had the black levels set too high. It should be at zero for the best and most accurate HDR on my TV. And the brightness was also a click or two off the optimal. Best to look into your specific display to find the best settings for HDR. Though the auto calibrate is probably fine if not great.
I have both options and I agree 100% with you. For most people a PS5 is great, and if you have a handful of 4K discs it's the better option. If you become a more hardcore collector then upgrade, as I did, you will see a difference. But it's key that the most people possible have a way to play these discs and consoles enable that.
Definitely great for getting into 4k disc playback. I actually went from a Sony player when I first got my tv before getting the Panasonic 820 a couple years later. I eventually bought an Xbox for gaming and have tried it. It’s on par with cheaper dedicated players. Roughly… either way not all dedicated players are equal. I’ve never used a Reavon. You can’t get an oppo now. There’s only one recommendation I can make if you are serious about movies
@@drewscentral5587 I’m kinda over hearing that…. Ok fine. If you can’t afford it don’t buy it. If you own a ps5 or series x then the device we are recommending is the same price. If you buy 20-30 4ks then you’ve spent the same amount of money. At the point I had about 200 discs I realized it was dumb of me not to have an adequate player. And I really do feel anything less is kind of inadequate. I bought mine on Amazon and the had a payment plan option for 80 bucks for 5 months interest free. There was also a sale at the time

Interesting little tip, I've watched 3-D blu-ray (Gaurdians of the Galaxy) on my PS4 Pro with my Playstation VR headset. Low resolution but worked pretty well considering I've never had an actual 3-D HDTV.
It works on any 3D TV as well. While i don't have a PS5, since its now been updated to work with PSVR2, its the same as PS3 and PS4. 3Dtvs can read read 3D formatted blurays off a PS3, PS4 or PS5.

I agree 100%. I own both PS5 and a UB820. PS5 is pretty darn good for UHD discs. There's a slight bump in quality on the UB820 and of course the Dolby Vision. I'm just part of that 2% that's looking for just that little bit more. I only had the PS5 to start and never felt the quality suffered in any way. I mostly got the UB820 for the Dolby Vision but also figured if I was going to upgrade from PS5 that I'd get 'a bit more' where I can.
I am hard pressed to see the quality difference. I mean yeah I’m side by side stills. That’s not the whole story. The my Xbox has a pretty loud spinning noise and freezes/skips a significant ammount of the time. I’ve maybe had one hiccup in all my playback on the Panasonic. My old Sony had similar issues and in addition I had to manually turn on and off Dolby vision, which game consoles don’t have as everybody has mentioned. I really do think people need to be made aware that the Panasonic ub 820 is the stick you use to measure the quality of a player. And it’s not all that expensive of a stick so just get the stick
My first foray into 4k HDR Blurays was with the 4K-HDR release Akira. I can't really speak to the remastering effort since it's my only 4k disc so far so I don't have a reference for what a 4k Bluray should look like. But man, the disc drives in both the PS5 and the Series X were running *really* loud. It was super off-putting. Is that normal for 4k Blurays or did I just get a dud? (The movie played fine from start to finish, HDR 10 did work. I'm just talking about the noise the drive makes when the disc is running.)
@@MarcusAuerbach I felt the same way about my Xbox. I had the experience with certain discs in cheaper dedicated players too. I just tell everybody to get the Panasonic ub 820… nothing more and nothing less
My ps5 skips on a few movies (MI Fallout was the latest one that happened). I hear it has some issues with 100gb discs and Im seriously considering a ub820 now.
I would say yes. I watched evil dead rise 4k blu-ray on my series x a few days ago and it looked really good with no issues when it came to sound and picture quality
Agreed with everything you said. I had a Panasonic UB-420 4k player before I bought my PS5 and when I got the console and compared movies, they looked exactly the same. The PS5's ability to upscale the DVDs might've been ever so slightly lower than the Panasonic but not enough to notice in most cases. I eventually decided to sell the Panasonic since the PS5 was doing such a great job and figured the most high-end dedicated player would out-perform my PS5 so someday when I need it, I'll buy it. For the time being, the PS5 is perfect with my Sony Bravia X900H.
I’ve mostly watched my collection on consoles for years but this year finally went with a dedicated 4K/3D player because the consoles can’t seem to handle the new triple layer discs like LOTR and AVATAR. I ended up getting a region free version of the Panasonic DP-UB820 and it’s been great. It perfectly plays some burned discs that the consoles had trouble with too, like the DeSpecialized Star Wars discs.
This is why I still haven't purchased any 4K physical movies. I have the Xbox player...but am always reading about the issues with triple layer disks. Since the movies I want tend to be the more 'epic/bigger' films, I fear I'll end up trying to watch a movie and having It freeze up? So I default to options like watching 4K on iTunes. Am I worrying too much about that issue?
So, does the dp-ub820 have a significantly better picture quality than ps5? For similar price, ps5 plays games as well as 4k uhd blurays, butnot the dp-ub820.... I'm debating between the two
Some things to add. Your Xbox One X should be able to play 3D Blu-rays without issue. The Series X does not have support. The PS5 and XSX not being able to handle CD's and 3D Blu-ray is actually ridiculous. It's a software update. There's no reason for it other than laziness (and maybe licensing) Also, for those still stuck on non-HDR displays, the PS5 player has HDR-to-SDR conversion. So, if you want to play your UHD Blu-rays on a non-HDR display and not have the colors look weird, the PS5 does just fine in that regard.
I had a Series X and was happy enough playing 4k movies on it. The biggest problem tough was that the Series X doesn't support the Bitstream mode, so I had very limited audio options since my TV also doesn't support DTS for exemple. As my 4k collection got bigger I decided to buy a dedicated player and got the Sony X800 M2, and I'm extremely happy with it and yes, there is noticeable difference in the picture quality, not night and day difference, but it's there. And now I have whatever audio or picture quality is available and also a better upscaling with is really nice
I rip my UHDs to MKV, play them in Plex on the Nvidia Shield and have full support for Dolby Vision and HDR, Dolby Atmos, etc. There is also the added benefit of not spinning up a disk for playback. Best experience for convenient viewing of films. It upscales DVD and Blu-Ray to great effect as well.
Another thing to keep in mind in game console vs dedicated player is power consumption. My Sony UBP-X700 is rated at 15W while a PS5 is rated at 350W. Cant confirm how much it is actually using while playing a 4K disc versus game disc though.
My Xbox one X, was my first 4k player years ago. I eventually got both the ps5 and Xbox series X. But we had a 4k since 2018, I didn't get mine until this year and spent around $600 on a Sony TV lol.
Good video, just want to mention that I only have Gaming Consoles, (both of them from the previous generation), and I "do" play 3D discs on them, and they work.
I used to use my PS5 and didn't really believe the hype on dedicated players. But then I picked up a Panasonic UB-820 and man, it looks amazing. Comparing the 2 was interesting and I noticed the PS5 tended to crush blacks a lot on my OLED TV, whereas the Panasonic tone mapped correctly and looked fantastic. The only caveat I found was that maybe 10 out of 100 4K discs I own had Dolby Vision/HDR10+, so it wasn't a super useful feature.
This has been my exact experience. LG CX OLED owner and have found the UB820 tone maps much better than the PS5 (plus has the HDR optimizer if you need to take something). I’m not sure if anyone else feels this way, but I’ve actually turned Dolby Vision OFF on my UB820 as I prefer the way most content looks in HDR10 over DV. Dolby Vision tends to be darker in general and limits the brightness of highlights. It could just be the OLED I have, but my eyes consistently prefer the static HDR10 grade, as the lower mid tones tend to be a tad brighter, and the highlights “pop” a bit brighter.
Had the 820 but couldn’t get it to jive properly with my sound system. So I returned it for the 420 since I didn’t really need Dolby vision, and it looks the same. Panasonic does a really amazing job with upscaling. I couldn’t believe how great some of my older anime dvds looked.
Bro you just created a necessity for me, god damn now I need to get a dedicated player, been using consoles for my 4k movies since day 1, but you do make a good point. Salutes from CDMX
Been playing on my Series X since Launch and One S and One X before that. The Series X calibration tool is pretty sweet when taking the edge on quality and a step forward towards a dedicated player. I need to update my TV before i even dare consider a dedicated player.
I remember before i bought a dedicated 4k player i used my xbox one S to watch my dvds, blurays, and 4ks and i was very satisfied using it. Ultimately if i didnt have one i wouldnt have been able to start building up my physical collection because i only got a dedicated player like 4/5 months ago. If all you have is a gaming console then use it, start building up that collection for when you can eventually get a dedicated player!
I bought a 4K player and it was really weird. It would not play certain discs after a certain point in the film. I grabbed a PS five afterwards and it has never failed me. It is my dedicated player at this point. I have a 65 inch Sony X900H TV
This is common fault with Sony machines. They seem unable to cope properly with the layer change combined with 100gig discs. And the discs must be flawless even if they look clean I use microfibre cloth which helps If the machine freezes unplug from power completely replug in eject remove disc close drawer and restart from scratchhope this helps
@@mikewilding3199 That is very helpful for anyone that has the issue that I had. Luckily I have not had any issues since using my PS5. It works perfectly
Very interesting breakdown - I'm looking into my first venture into 4K blu-ray - altho I don't have a TV set up (flat is too small) so going to try adding a 4k Blu-Ray drive to a computer. Years ago I had a blu-ray drive in a PC and compatibility was a nightmare so I'm hoping it's matured a bit since then and this won't turn into a giant rabbit hole. But I guess that's part of the fun.
This was actually a pretty helpful video. I have a higher-end setup but was considering ditching my 4K player for a PS5. After watching this, I think I’ll hold on to it. Thanks!
I have been very impressed with my Xbox Series X when playing 4K's. I do not know if this is common, but the console's fan definitely becomes louder when playing 4K movies however.
Mine is loud as well, also there are some small noticeable hitches, artifacting and other issues. I haven't tried my PS5 yet, but I'm considering getting a dedicated player.
the old Xbox One S and Xbox One X as well as the new Xbox Series X all WILL NOT PLAY numerous 4K discs for me. They have just happened to be some of my favorite as well!
I completely agree 👍. I've never had a dedicated player but I heard they have been prone to freezing and skips. I do have a one x as my first dedicated player and my God was that a piece of garbage. I had so many uhds that wouldn't play and like you said they would skip all the time or freeze and give the picture this blurry green image. I have not dealt with this issue with my ps5 knock on wood lol 😆. My Transformers uhd that has one tiny scratch freezes on a certain section every single time and skips to the next part. Same exact scene no problems on my ps5 player
@@BigStef71182 4K discs are extremely sensitive to scratching. Even minimal scratching can cause skipping and glitches. That's why I always return scratched discs.
@stevemuzak8526 I know and it's not even us consumers who cause it. I'm surprised how many 4k discs I have that come scratched. It's ridiculous. I collect steelbooks and it happens often which is a pain in the ass. I never had this issues with regular blu rays. With my scratched discs I have though my ps5 hasn't given me any problems.
honestly I would only recommend the high end 4k blu ray players, I was looking to buy a player a few months ago and the ones that work “good” are $500 or more. At that price I just keep my ps5 that can play games too. The ones that are $300, $400 have a lot of issues like scenes skipping or audio lag. I was thinking of buying a dedicated one just because I needed a region free 4k blu ray player for my discs.
there is legit barely any difference between high end blu ray players and the ps5 other than dolby vision and MAYBE a slight improvement on frame skipping. just not worth it, ps5 is the ps3 of 4k blu ray
Just wanted to show some love from the UK as I watch your channel regularly and love the way you deliver all your content. I currently have the Panasonic UB820 for my main set up and a PS5 in my room, and agree that fundamentally both options are great but the Panasonic just gives me that bit more I crave!
Something very important to keep in mind, true the video game consoles don't offer dolby vision for movies, there really isn't a huge selection of 4k movies that can offer dolby vision. There is a selection of dolby vision 4k Movies, but not all movies are dolby vision. Also, for dolby vision you need to have the TV that supports dolby vision. You may buy dedicated 4k player because of dolby vision, but now you need the dolby vision 4k tv. And then you'll need the dolby vision content.😂
I'd say between 35 % to 45 % of 4K Blu Rays have Dolby Vision. Maybe more if you get many boutique releases and less if you get more studio releases. But yeah, definitely not something to worry too much about.
I used to own a massive VHS collection in the 1990's, then a DVD collection in the 2000's. So when I say the difference between HDR 10 & Dolby Vision is negligible on a 65 inch 4K oled TV, I mean it. People shouldn't let FOMO force them into paying more than they should. Even streaming 4k on a current modern tv set looks amazing compared to what we used to have.
One thing that wasn't mentioned are the control functions and this can be very frustrating for non-gamers, like a spouse. Only basic functions have one button control and they aren't labelled, so infrequent users often forget which button to press. Other functions require a more complex sequence and some can be a real hunt to find them. It's definitely not as convenient as the remote of a dedicated video disc player. If you've got a non-gamer in the household, you may find yourself shelling out for the optional remote control to keep everyone happy and even though the optional PS5 remote control is better than the game controller for non-gamers, it's still not as good as most remote controls for dedicated video disc players or even the old PS3 remote control.
@@TheMysteryDriver well the update came out last year, so it might be a limitation on your TV. I have a 2018 Vizio M Series and it works like a dream. I threw my Xbox media remote away lol
100% The Truth!! Having PS5, XSX, Panasonic DP-UB824, LG C1 and Sony HT-A9, I love my 4K Player so much. Upscaling 1080p BluRays is another world compared to the consoles. Further I like HDR Tone Mapping Settings on it a lot. Of course Dolby Vision is the most important feature, but also the possibilty to get DTS formats was a big win, as LG CX and C1 doesn't support it, unfortunately. Great video Jeff! I appriciate your channel. You gave me a lot of valuable information so far. Keep going. 😊🎞📺🤟
The thing I disliked the most about using the PS5 as a disc player is actually the remote. The official Sony PS5 media remote is terrible for discs. There's no controls like stop, eject, and many others you'd get on something like your disc player remote. Even with the media remote, the PS5 makes you do many of the disc commands through an onscreen menu. You might as well just use the PS5 controller for all the good the remote does.
I use my PS5 for 4k discs as well as games, for the reason that I can’t afford a dedicated 4k player right now and I don’t have enough space on my shelf currently for a dedicated 4k player. I found that the PS5 is a good 4k player for me right now. I don’t really need a high end 4k player anyways. I will admit that a majority of the time I watch the digital versions of my film collection anyway.
I actually liked the Xbox One S and X consoles as Blu Ray players over the Series X. The disc drive in the Series X can be somewhat loud at times if you have a quiet room. Consoles are also a bit hard/consufing for some people (like my parents) to use as a blu ray player, so a dedicated player worked out well in the long run.
Great video. The real tough part is they don't support 3D. The ps4 and Ps3 do though. So the PS4 pro/xbone x are really the best game console players since they do it all.
Series X is a good 4K player picture wise. Some disks either don't work though (American Psycho, Interstellar) or stop working part way (Alien freezes when Kane explores the ship, Star Wars starts artifacting near the end). There's no way of knowing which disks will do this. I've read online it's 100 gig disks that are the problem but I've tried a few of those and the work fine.
@@ineedgunslotsofguns I actually got the trilogy for a little less but even at that price it’s a good value. Both cuts of all three films. I disagree with this 98% of people. I do still think it’s more reliable than streaming even on a console but as you grow your collection you’ll want a dedicated player. I actually went from one dedicated player to a better player. That’s why I tell everybody Panasonic ub 820. Maybe it doesn’t fit your budget today but once you get that player you’ll never look back

ANH works fine until near the end when it starts artifacting.
I have a PS5 and agree it’s a good 4K player, good enough for me anyway. The only thing that makes me want to upgrade to dedicated 4K player is the PS5 can get pretty noisy when playing discs (games or 4K). Mines does anyway
Lay the PS5 horizontally and the noise should go away (if you have it vertical). If I set mine vertical the disc drive is loud, but horizontal I can’t hear it at all while playing movies.
I’m glad this showed up on my feed. I don’t have the budget to for a high end tv or speakers but looks like I’m not missing much. Sometimes I use a headset as a cheaper alternative to speakers.
Lmao I was thinking the same thing. I'm like series one ?? But it's not his fault, tho I'm an Xbox guy but the naming for these things can get confusing
Xbox one x was the mid generation refresh of the previous generation. The new Xbox consoles are called the series. There are two, the series S and the series X.
I’m down here in the comments trying to figure out what he has. I thought he said he has the One X, not the Series X, but then partway through he’s saying Series X and showing pictures of it…. but does he own it??
I would always say get a dedicated player. I have both my PS5 and a 4k player hooked up to my A80J and the one thing that will always make them stand out is picture settings of the TV itself. If you put your TV into game mode and play a 4k movie it will not look as good as changing over to another input that is dialed in to play your movies. Motion, picture quality ect is dramatically different and you wouldn't want those settings on a PS5 to produce massive input lag.
the PS5 will actually switched to "Movie playback mode" when playing a disc-based movie so you can set up your TV specifically for it. then it will switch back to game mode when you go back to the PS5 menu.
@@CrimsonGear80 I'm saying switching your TV settings to dial it in perfectly is kinda annoying. Also the loss of Dolby Vision is a bummer hence why I have both a dedicated player and the PS5 hooked up to my TV
Jeff, great review, as always. Very informative! A side note would be that using a gaming controller to control the disc player isn’t as intuitive as a dedicated 4K player remote. Another angle to consider in the review.
I've been using game consoles as my go to movie player since the PS2. I like owning movies but I'm not the guy that spends a grand on a 4k blu ray player. My Series X gets the job done (would have preferred a PS5) but it was take what you could get in 2020 and 2021 and Xbox is good enough.
@stonesfan285 Yes you can get 4k players for far cheaper. My main point is since I'm buying a gaming console anyway and it comes with a 4k player and streaming apps. Why waste money on a dedicated player? The PS5 and XBox aren't great but they get the job done if you aren't an enthusiast.
I never knew I needed a video like this one, but I am glad you made it. I have a PS5 and a rather mid-range 4k tv, so I believe they serve each other well. But it is good to know that if I want to get more serious about 4k movies I'll need to get more than just a better TV.
I did not have a good 4K Blu experience with my Xbox Series X. The 4K discs would skip constantly on the Series X but play fine on my friends player. Also, it couldn't play DVDs, not sure if they updated it yet or not, but that was kind of weird, I thought. I wonder if the discs were skipping because I had the console set up vertically 🤔 would that make a difference? Anywho, just wanted to warn any potential buyers of my experience with the Series X. Great video, love your stuff 😊
I found that too comparing my brother's series x to my PS5. I heard there was an update at some point though that helped picture quality on the series x. I'm just not sure if we checked before or after the update when we did.
@@supermanblue2274i'd be willing to bet money that the ps5 does play CDs. Its just that SO many companies and bands these days use CDr for releases. Try playing an old school CD from the early days
I have been using a game consoles for movie watching since PS3. This year I breathed into it a second life because I learned you can change a drive region for DVD and BluRay on a hacked PS3. Now I can buy and watch movies all over the world.
My PS5 is my main 4K player but my XSX has had problems with larger disc like the game of thrones 4k seasons. I guess it has problems playing the 100 gb disc and it freezes up randomly for a minute with audio still playing. Never had that problem on the PS5 tho.
A good video, although in addition to this I would also recommend watching the more specific videos in terms of the technical aspects of each console, I recommend the HDTV Test videos.
I think for most people, it's perfectly fine but a standalone player is still preferred and will give you more options, is usually faster and just feels better suited. One good thing is if we run into player shortages or they just stop being made one day, at least there are millions of Xbox and PS5s out there we can always get.
i use a ps5 as my 4k Blu-ray player and it is not the best player but it will work for me. and i don't have the money to use to shell out for the expensive Panasonic players.
To be honest with you, if enough of the PS5 or Xbox user base ask for it, both are good with doing software updates to support advanced 4K features. I've never heard of dedicated players doing any sore of substantial update to add new content/features. They just expect you to purchase the next 4K player.
Do both consoles support 48Gb/s from the HDMI port or only 40Gb/s? That may be why they don’t support HDR10+ however Dolby Vision shouldn’t use more bandwidth than standard HDR10.
I got a PS5 for Demon Souls and to play 4Ks. I had been collecting Blurays for a few years but was late to the format and didn't want to repeat that mistake with 4K. For the price and doubling as a gaming machine I would say its a great option. The PS5 handles the discs well, and while you do miss out on HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision, the point of entry with these doesn't feel so steep simply because the PS5 can pull double duty. I do plan on upgrading to a dedicated player once I've upgraded the other components of my home theater setup, but it will be among the last of my purchases for it. Thanks for the videos!
I can’t speak for PS5, but I’ve run into several issues playing discs on my Xbox Series X. My Criterion Collection Citizen Kane 4k disc doesn’t play at all, which is a bummer. I don’t have the moolah for a dedicated 4k player, but I agree that it is the best option.
As someone who owns both the PS5 and Series X, I prefer to watch 4K blu rays on the PS5. Honestly both consoles struggle at times to handle the 100GB 4K movies but I find the PS5 isn’t as loud as the Series X and I’ve felt that the Xbox is more hotter. I also find that the PS5 has deeper blacks when watching film (used the same set up and the same TV presetting). The Series X does have the ability to display the current Mbs pulling from the disk which I find Interesting in which I can’t find the setting for PS5 to show that. The Series X at times also has this weird jagged edge on the side of movies that I can’t figure out why it’s doing that. The biggest thing I found weird is that you have to specifically download the free Blu-Ray app for the Series X in order to watch movies while the PS5 is as simple as putting the disc into the system and pressing play. Overall I find the PS5 more capable and convenient but I’d love to get my hands on a dedicated player one day to see the differences
Similiar issues with my Series X, the bluray unit is not that good, i've tested with an old BR (Master & Commander) and get very loud noises. Some BR even don't get disk menu displayed correctly...
Thanks so much for this video, I specifically bought the physical PS5 cause I wanna start collecting physical media, didn't think a 4k player was necessary and thanks to your insight, I'm glad with the decision I made.
When I first got my PS5, I loved watching 4Ks Blu-rays on it. And then, a month or two down the line, I started noticing scratching on the discs as well as a small crack on a few discs. I stopped all Blu-ray playing on the PS5 after that.
I use Xbox One X (2017) to play 4K UHD Discs and i use PS3 for 3D Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray. PS3 is also compatible with everything unlike Samsung etc. which can't read all discs.
A note and a correction, the Xbox (at least the One S and One X) can in fact play 3D blu-rays. If you have it hooked up to a 3D capable display, years have to go to the display settings on my console and turn on 3D simply. I would assume the series x is the same way since they both use the same OS and software. And on a different note since my TV isn't that good in HDR, I always run my Xbox in SDR and notice that the color grade on some 4K discs in SDR are pretty dull, a recent example I can think of is the Truman show because I just got that movie in the mail from Amazon and watched it recently, but I found color on the 1080p disc looks better than what I got from the UHD, maybe the Xbox One S just sucks at tone napping the HDR down to SDR. I feel like that could be an interesting topic for another video, how do 4K UHDs look when played back in SDR.
@@joefawley9264 in terms of 3D movies, PS4 is one step beyond because if you have a PS VR headset you can stick a 3D Blu-ray into your PS4 and watch it in the headset. The resolution of the headset isn't the best but it's a way to do it.
As the only one in the house with a blue ray player capable of running these discs, I've gotten lots of praise. And I'm able to play most of my favorite games!
There is literally no difference between a ps5 or a dedicated BD player. Buying a dedicated player is throwing away money at this point. The difference is like 1% and you wil see it only if you but them said by said and stop the frame. There are many comparisons and there is not enough difference to spend 300 to 500 for a dedicated BD player.
For those like me that use analogue audio, the difference in sound quality between owning a console and dedicated player with analogue connections is nothing short of monumental. You cannot even begin to compare them.
Great vid, a few more things to consider for those interested: 1. Xbox One S could the cheapest way to get s 4k blu ray, although they're not currencly in production. 2. No, no ps4 is able to read 4k blu ray discs, not even the ps4 pro. 3. You can change the region of your ps5 or ps4. So I have set up my console to play japanese didcs for instance and that wil not affect gsme discd since are region free amyways (only movies are on that discriminatory phase). 4. According to one video I saw from Vincent Yeoh, Xbox consoles do have a 1ms stutter every so often that desyncs audio and video and sometimed they get fixed in the next scene. It's very strange but it happens so that's why I decided to watch films on ps5. 5. Both console offer a remote controller for wstching content. The ps5 one goes directly into media if you hit the power button. And the Xbox App for mobile can be used as a virtual remote controller. 6. Xbox One S, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X|S share the same UI with some difference but audiovisual quality will be the same for every console. 7. The First Xbox One, the one that looks like a VHS does not read 4k blu rays 8. You can bookmark stuff and resume movies in any of these console. 9. Ps5 use their own signsture Tempest console for 3D and I guess It sound great for headphones in movies 10. Xbox uses Dolby Atmos and DTS:X but you have to pay for those in order to yse it in headphones. They Wi dows Sonic for free but so far I, Dolby Atmos is way better 11. You can purchase digital movies on Xbox , even in 4k. Although those are digital stream and you need 25mbps for 4k content. Glad I helped! Maybe someday I'll talk about this on my channel.
Bro I’m so glad you made this video. Earlier I wanted to watch the Hobbit on 4k on my xbox series x, I kept searching in my tv menu why there’s no Dolby Vison😂. I didn’t realise that on games consoles you can’t get Dolby vision. Recently I bought the Hobbit and Lord of the rings trilogies on 4k discs. I’ll just stick to my xbox series x and ps5 on the 4k tv with HDR. They look good enough on the consoles I will stick with them. Keep it up bro thanks for the video.👍
I had used an XBOX, PS3, and then a PS4 as my primary physical media player for years in my home theater. A few months after getting the PS4 I discovered it didn't play CD's. That was what prompted me to go back to a seperate physical media player. I wanted something that would play as many disc based formats as possible. Year ago we finally secured a PS5 and our son wanted to go with the digital only model but I agreed to pay the $100.00 difference for the model that played physical disc even though I already had a seperate 4K player in the house, Sony UBP-X700. My son uses the PS5 in his bedroom primarily for gaming, but does watch 4k movies as well, a 50" Sony 4k that supports Dolby Vision. On certain occasions he moves it into the home theater room to play games or watch movies on a 75" Samsung 4K. Samsung doesn't support Dolby Vision only HDR10 and 10+. I have never noticed much of a difference in game play on either tv using the PS5 but do feel that bluray/ 4K movies look better on the Samsung model.
Using OPPO UDP-203 since 2017 straight, had 3 Sony players before that and also playstation too, but I must say, for hometheater and cinema for playing movies, dedicated high end players can deliver only. I also recommend the following players: Panasonic DP-UB9000 MAGNETAR UDP800 Reavon UBR-X100/X200 Sony UBP-X800M2
This is off topic but you look and even sound a lot like Tom Segura. I was a bit surprised when I saw you. On topic, if we're talking about 4K blu-rays I think using a PS5 or an Xbox Series X is good enough. I think the truth of the matter is the vast majority of people won't care that much and will simply go for the most obvious choice. And honestly, I think I'm in that group. I would love to have a home theater setup so that everything I watch is the absolute best quality possible but I simply don't have the space or money for that. Plus it's fun for me to insert a disc into my PS5. To use a gaming console as a movie machine. I've been trying to build up a DVD/blu-ray collection again and using my PS5 is satisfying enough for me.
I have a 43' 4K TV in my bedroom with a sound bar. I use a PS5 as my 4K Blu-ray player, and it looks great in my experience. It's a massive upgrade over my old 1080p setup! Games look and sound pretty amazing, though keep in mind that many PS5 games are lower resolution than 2160p(4K).
I use my Xbox Series X and PS5 and all in one Gaming machines, 4K Blu-ray player and streaming box. I’m still working on getting a 4K OLED, I’m still on a 1080p tv (house repairs keep taking my savings) but my Dolby Atmos at least play really good using consoles. I guess I’ll look into eventually getting a dedicated player, but for now I’ll stick with my consoles.
Here is my recommend 4K player if you want the dedicated option: amzn.to/3SIjeul
The PS3 in fact has a better Blu ray player then the PS4 so I doubt a ps5 can match the blu ray player on a PS3 console

The Blu-ray app on Xbox series X doesn't work for some, I being one of them. I can't watch movie from the console and instead have to use my old Xbox One to watch them. I thought you should know because I don't see many people talking about this issue.

PS1 was not a bad VCD player if you had that attachment

I dont have any complaints for the quality of the movies. 👏🏽
The Sony X800 is even better, as it will play DVD-Audio, SACD, and can be converted to multi-region support.
I turned this off as well and haven't seen the freezing happen since.
what if I put the blu rays on my flash drive and then plug it on the TV? how does the quality compare to a blu ray disc running on a blu ray player?
@@requiett Whats more infuriating, is that, one x700 can skip and freeze horribly making disks unwatchable (BTTF trilogy 4k), it can work totally fine on another x700 player. I have two, so I was able to test this. It baffled me. Both have their original firmware.
I’m glad you covered this! A good follow up should be correct picture/calibration etc. Xbox has a great calibration tool!
Yes please
Agreed
And the ps5 auto hdr tone maps when used with certain Sony TVs.
@TBoogy3
Yes, but unfortunately a lot of the auto calibrarion sometimes is not correct.
@@robertfaulkner1824 Yeah I've got the 820. The DV is superb and it's a definite upgrade on the PS5, but both are excellent.

🧢
I'm debating between the two
Thanks! Good to know.
This is the correct answer.
Nvidia Shield and Plex is the only way

The reason for me to upgrade to a 4k uhd player from a ps5 is the noise of the ps5 when I’m watching a movie.
Another thing to keep in mind in game console vs dedicated player is power consumption. My Sony UBP-X700 is rated at 15W while a PS5 is rated at 350W. Cant confirm how much it is actually using while playing a 4K disc versus game disc though.
I started with my Series X and when I started collecting more 4K, I picked up 4K player for the Dolby Vision.
This!
I've way more faith that the ps5 will be more reliably updated to fix any future issues than most dedicated players too.
This is common fault with Sony machines. They seem unable to cope properly with the layer change combined with 100gig discs. And the discs must be flawless even if they look clean I use microfibre cloth which helps If the machine freezes unplug from power completely replug in eject remove disc close drawer and restart from scratchhope this helps

the old Xbox One S and Xbox One X as well as the new Xbox Series X all WILL NOT PLAY numerous 4K discs for me. They have just happened to be some of my favorite as well!
PS5 is one of the best 4K players. Won't skip scratched discs. That's a huge advantage over stand alone 4K players.
@@BigStef71182 I have Panasonic UB820 player. That player can deal with almost everything but you need a good quality HDMI cable.
The video I’ve been waiting for for years!
honestly I would only recommend the high end 4k blu ray players, I was looking to buy a player a few months ago and the ones that work “good” are $500 or more.
Thanks for the info
I have the Panasonic 820, truly an awesome unit to have.
Best player for the money
ONLY player I’d recommend.
My Vizio 75 inch Quantum 4k TV has Dolby Vision and HDR 10. My Sony UBP X-700 has Dolby Vision . So YES you're right
In regard to TVs, I think most of them have Vision. Samsung is the major brand that doesn't support it.
@@Brisingr73 I was just gonna say Samsung does NOT support Dolby Vision
I used to own a massive VHS collection in the 1990's, then a DVD collection in the 2000's. So when I say the difference between HDR 10 & Dolby Vision is negligible on a 65 inch 4K oled TV, I mean it.
People shouldn't let FOMO force them into paying more than they should. Even streaming 4k on a current modern tv set looks amazing compared to what we used to have.
Anything beyond a PS5 or Xbox and you run into the law of diminishing returns
Just get a 3rd party remote that can control other stuff as well. I've got one for my Xbox ever controls my tv and soundbar and accidently my fan.
Or just the PS5 remote
@@TheMysteryDrivernot even. Xbox CEC controls allow you to use your TV remote to control the Xbox in media apps
@@ClapperDan i wish my Xbox cec could change the volume on my tv
You know you can use your TV remote on PS five and Xbox series X just enable HDMI, CEC, and voila your TV remote now works for you console
I watched universals the wolf man. Same story
@@robertfaulkner1824 It's annoying. Tempted to buy LOTR 4K but it's too great a risk at £60.
@@ineedgunslotsofguns I actually got the trilogy for a little less but even at that price it’s a good value. Both cuts of all three films. I disagree with this 98% of people. It’s 98% of the time… and 100% of people would prefer to watch 100% of their movies reliably. I do still think it’s more reliable than streaming even on a console but as you grow your collection you’ll want a dedicated player. I actually went from one dedicated player to a better player. That’s why I tell everybody Panasonic ub 820. Maybe it doesn’t fit your budget today but once you get that player you’ll never look back
@@ineedgunslotsofguns Same, I've given up taking the risk now, only buying if it's a 4K+BD release.
@@beyond72deepsoulfulhousemixes Luckily most seem to include the blu ray. Be good if there was a compatibility list. Can confirm that: Matrix 1-4, John Wick 1-4, Dark Knight Trilogy, The Batman, Batman vs Superman, Joker, Braveheart, Alita, Total Recall, Crouching Tiger, No time to die, Blade Runner 2049, Spiderman Homecoming, Godzilla Vs Kong, Planet Earth 2 and Star Wars episodes 3, 5, 6, and 8 work fine on Xbox.
You have an Xbox One S or X not “Series”
Lmao I was thinking the same thing. I'm like series one ?? But it's not his fault, tho I'm an Xbox guy but the naming for these things can get confusing
I was going to comment the same thing, I just rolled my eyes when I heard him say that haha
How come you don't know the proper name of the things you own
Excellent breakdown of the various options, benefits and tradeoffs. Thanks. Subscribed.
Well going off my own eyeballs it is definitely better than streaming a 4K movie on vudu for instance
Perfect advice. I have the Panasonic UB820, and it's a great machine. I'm not a console gamer, so the cost was worth it for me.
4k blu-ray and 4k tv trash go back to 1080p blu-ray with 1080p tv!!
hey! read a few of these comments and i am able to watch coraline in 3d on my ps5 and the quality is insane!
Yeah I've had a few 100GB 4K discs that wouldn't even play now, so I wouldn't recommend it as a player.
Just a correction Xbox can play cd’s and I find the picture quality better on my ps5 than my series x when it comes to 4k blurays
I found that too comparing my brother's series x to my PS5. I heard there was an update at some point though that helped picture quality on the series x. I'm just not sure if we checked before or after the update when we did.
Completely agree. I play PS5 more so I figured I’d use my series x for my 4k movies but the PS5 picture quality does look better.
He said the PS5 doesn't play CD's but the Xbox does, neither plays super audio CD's.
and why is that the case?
I've watched about half of my 4k GOT on my Series X and had zero issues
A good video, although in addition to this I would also recommend watching the more specific videos in terms of the technical aspects of each console, I recommend the HDTV Test videos.
I think for most people, it's perfectly fine but a standalone player is still preferred and will give you more options, is usually faster and just feels better suited. One good thing is if we run into player shortages or they just stop being made one day, at least there are millions of Xbox and PS5s out there we can always get.
I’m glad you didn’t try to say there was a major difference between a dedicated 4k player vs a gaming console.
there are defiantly differences between players
i use a ps5 as my 4k Blu-ray player and it is not the best player but it will work for me. and i don't have the money to use to shell out for the expensive Panasonic players.
Thanks for explaining this. I`m currently using an Xbox One X, but don`t have a 4k TV yet.
dont but it dude 1080p tv is better
To be honest with you, if enough of the PS5 or Xbox user base ask for it, both are good with doing software updates to support advanced 4K features. I've never heard of dedicated players doing any sore of substantial update to add new content/features. They just expect you to purchase the next 4K player.
Do both consoles support 48Gb/s from the HDMI port or only 40Gb/s? That may be why they don’t support HDR10+ however Dolby Vision shouldn’t use more bandwidth than standard HDR10.
@@loophole3526 48fbs on series x not sure about ps5. But I assume it does aswell
Agree with this - Sony just added Dolby Atmos to the PS5 in the new update so they are listening & adding where possible
I respect your honesty!
My ps5 has also had some skipping issues and I'm now thinking of getting a ub820. If I knew it would fix the issue I'd buy it already.
Thanks so much for this video, I specifically bought the physical PS5 cause I wanna start collecting physical media, didn't think a 4k player was necessary and thanks to your insight, I'm glad with the decision I made.
It's called a One X, not Series One
My Panasonic UB820 4K is amazing for my dedicated player on my C1 OLED. Thank you for the video.
When I first got my PS5, I loved watching 4Ks Blu-rays on it. And then, a month or two down the line, I started noticing scratching on the discs as well as a small crack on a few discs. I stopped all Blu-ray playing on the PS5 after that.
Don't know if you have your console standing vertically but I read that having it lay horizontal is much better for your console and the discs.
@@pastramiking6874 yep, my consoles standing vertically
Same with PS4 I believe
What would be your recommendation for a mid range region free 4K player?
For those like me that use analogue audio, the difference in sound quality between owning a console and dedicated player with analogue connections is nothing short of monumental. You cannot even begin to compare them.
Great vid, a few more things to consider for those interested:
7. The First Xbox One, the one that looks like a VHS does not read 4k blu rays
8. You can bookmark stuff and resume movies in any of these console.
9. Ps5 use their own signsture Tempest console for 3D and I guess It sound great for headphones in movies
10. Xbox uses Dolby Atmos and DTS:X but you have to pay for those in order to yse it in headphones. They Wi dows Sonic for free but so far I, Dolby Atmos is way better
11. You can purchase digital movies on Xbox , even in 4k. Although those are digital stream and you need 25mbps for 4k content.
Glad I helped! Maybe someday I'll talk about this on my channel.
I would love to see television choices that go into depth as for 3D, and others with 120ghz tvs etc video 🤔
Do u have a video on best/worst 4k players to buy?
I have the Panasonic UB-820. Got it long before my ps5. Glad I did and that you recommend that one.
Using OPPO UDP-203 since 2017 straight, had 3 Sony players before that and also playstation too, but I must say, for hometheater and cinema for playing movies, dedicated high end players can deliver only. I also recommend the following players:
Panasonic DP-UB9000
MAGNETAR UDP800
Reavon UBR-X100/X200
Sony UBP-X800M2
DP-UB820 for us Panny lovers who don't want to pay $1K for 9000. Same tech and features without the great build quality of the 9000.
Definitely Tom Segura's doppelganger.
Thanks for finally covering this
I have a 43' 4K TV in my bedroom with a sound bar. I use a PS5 as my 4K Blu-ray player, and it looks great in my experience. It's a massive upgrade over my old 1080p setup! Games look and sound pretty amazing, though keep in mind that many PS5 games are lower resolution than 2160p(4K).
