    You’ve hit the nail right on the head! I have a very excitable and focused GSD of about 18 months. He’s an entire male. His recall is acceptable until a distraction is there. Mainly but not always, another dog. I’ve been trying to make myself more interesting than the other dog without success. I am experienced with GSDs and have kept and trained them myself for more than forty years. This is the first time I have failed to get a perfect recall in all circumstances. HELP!! Lol.

    Awesome videos. Have looked at heaps of dog training videos and definitely prefer you technique to all the others I’ve seen. If I could offer a suggestion OR request it would be to see more of people you actually demonstrating your techniques with the dogs. i.e. explain the technique then actually demonstrate it with an animal. Seeing thing done the correct way by a professional trainer has FAR more impact than merely hearing it in a video.

    If i may ask you. I ve got a female rottie, 5 years old, which is very obedient in everything, except when she is off leash and there are cats around. Unfortunately it was taught when it was younger to chase them and play. Is there any way i could fix it at this age?? (I wasnt the owner, got her from my brother at the age of 4, but she knows i am the leader and obeys.

      So until the dog can be trusted no offlead time as effectively the dog can do whatever she wants! We have to be able to control every choice the dog makes and reward the good when we can! It’s all about creating habits! Long line or flexi lead for at least the next 6 months!

      I was wondering the same thing. And you can't be bribing them every time. How do you gain ongoing obedience without getting an overweight dog through all the food and treats ?

  • @outdoorelite7789
    @outdoorelite7789 3 года назад +2

    These are great tips and I agree with them. However, I have trained police K9’s and we use food reward for a lot of the training. He is the thing good works until you start taking the food out of the equation. Even if you slowly take the food out most dogs will disobey. These is why I’m firm on light compulsion work with a prong collar or a choker. Compulsion work builds a solid obedience dog. However, compulsion work has to be done correctly or you will shut a dog down.

    • @TheCanineCoachDogTraining
      @TheCanineCoachDogTraining  2 года назад +2

      So many variables buddy! I also train security dogs as my actual job job. Dogs certainly do need to understand that some things are not optional but I personally do this with always switching between rewarding and enforcing, when I am enforcing something I am using patience, repetition and the right energy. I always try to teach the dog how to make the right choice.. if the compulsion is too hard for the dog it can be dangerous. It’s better if the dog is making the right choice not to avoid pain but because it’s just the better option.. not explaining myself great here. This is a 1 hour long conversation + with a beer 😂

    • @TheCanineCoachDogTraining
      @TheCanineCoachDogTraining  3 года назад

      Haha grass is a pain in the ass! 😅 way too distracting! The reason is because the amount of information your pup can collect from the scents on the grass is insanely overwhelming! We need to condition the pup to keep his head up off the floor!

    • @TheCanineCoachDogTraining
      @TheCanineCoachDogTraining  3 года назад

      Definitely Correct so well done! Puppies have to use their noses and explore.. what I would say is add a command to it so the pup knows when he can/can’t do it! Does that make sense?

    You are advocating using what i call the Ping Pong game, that is getting the dog to run between two people. What I do is actually don't give the dog a break, as soon as one person has given him the reward, the other person calls. I find the faster you do it, the better it is for the dog and more exciting. In tonight's class I am going to be teaching the recall!!! Good advice about not trying to challenge the dog for a recall when something interesting is happening. However, I tell my students that if the dog comes near them while off leash of it's own volition, to reward the dog and send them away. Likewise call them, reward and send them away to "go play". The problem most people have is they only call their dog at the park when they are going to put the leash on! The dog learns that fun stops if they come back when asked. Surprising how may dog owners don't really catch on to that and have an "aha" moment when we point it out :-)

    • @TheCanineCoachDogTraining
      @TheCanineCoachDogTraining  2 года назад +1

      Ah nice! Love all of that. Slightly different methods but similar as well! I like the telling the dog to go play! I personally encourage a little less play and try to encourage calm meetings this way over time the dog is less challenged by the environment and this naturally helps the recall as it holds its value.
      I really appreciate your comment. I believe there are lots of ways to teach the same thing and the one thing I hate in dog training is ego! So keep up the good work!!! 😍

    Our dog (18 months) isn't terrible at recally, but she can disappear from view, e.g. into woods, and then take too long (5-10 mins) to come back. She's always returned (so far!) but I'd like it a little quicker. Do you still reward this "bad" behaviour?

    • @TheCanineCoachDogTraining
      @TheCanineCoachDogTraining  3 года назад +1

      To be honest with you the dustbin can be tricky.. the reason is because it’s self rewarding! Meaning your dog can choose to do it and he will be rewarding himself with out you! The best way to deal with this is to restrict the dogs access to the dustbin! So either shutting the door or buying a stairgate could definitely help you!!!
