  • Awning’s on an Australian 4x4 tourer are almost essential. Protection from the sun, rain and wind but there are so many out there to choose from. Today I review my 30 second 270 degree awning, detail how I went about choosing and installing this particular awning and recommend some helpful accessories along the way.
    We obviously test the setup times and find out whether this awning is truely setup in only 30 seconds.
    I hope that this video was able to provide you with some information to help you in determining whether this awning is right for your setup.

    great video, I too went to purchase one of these awnings a five years back, went to my authorised dealer and he talked me out of buying this brand of awning because of the companies poor service record. He talked me into putting the extra money into buying the awning this one was copied off, the Ostridge Wing (made in South Africa). I am very happy with this brand of awning, it has taken a lot of abuse over the years and it is a little faded but has not sagged or lost any of it's structural integrity.

    Great review. I’m a big fan of the 270deg awnings. I purchase a Kings 270 2 years ago for around $430. It takes 2 people @ 1 min to setup. Has 4 poles & 8 guide ropes. Never let me down 👍👍

    Good video Nathan. I have had my 30 Second Awning for a bit over 2 years, having bought it off Gumtree for about half the normal price. The challenge I saw at the time were the flimsy roofrack attachments went much chop, so I paid a friend to weld me up some substantial stainless steel legs, which do the same as your KAON brackets, except that mine are probably stronger and for me give me great piece of mind. That all aside I'll take your advice on the additional pole to add support on the first arm. Other than that as you said the unit ticks all the boxes. I also have a couple of panels, where one is a tent as well but the quality of it isn't so great. Good product indeed 👍

      Great to hear mate! That certainly are a great value for money product and are super handy when on the road in hot sunny conditions.

    I have the same awning on my 200 series. My wife was skeptical but is a convert as well. It gives great shelter, is sturdy and well built, and is indeed quick and easy to set up and pack up. I have mine mounted slightly further forward on the car so the thin bar doesn’t interfere with the rear door spoiler and I have made a bracket mounted on the roof rack permanently to support that arm without a leg. The only real disadvantage is the height it adds to the car making it very difficult to find an undercover car park it can fit in.

    If you where to put a rooftop tent on the platform rack what or how would you then mount the awning.
    Ie the mounts you have wouldn't work..

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  Год назад +1

      Yes, this is something that you would have to consider. Depends on the RTT. If you had a hard shell design, they often come with awning mounting locations. Folding 'soft' shell designs, well another design would have to be implemented.

    Great overall review mate as usual. The one thing that all reviews of free-standing 270 awnings neglect is that you don't always have the luxury of level ground. Yes, you can still lower the poles to correct height, but then the walls are a PIA, because you end up with gaps everywhere underneath. Furthermore, pooling is a major issue without being able to adjust each arm independently of ground level. No fun waking up in the middle of the night to a swimming pool above your head...I agree, these are great for lunch stops, but not great for overnight set-up. Frankly, they lose all the benefits of quicker set-up by the time you find level land and have to peg down anyway. Have had an Alucab, which exhibited all of these issues, and yes, the 34s one alleviates some (esp. the trapezoidal walls), but the only sure fire way to overcome all is a Rhino Rack Batwing. They do have other "quality" issues though so they're not perfect...

    • @XploringOz
      @XploringOz  Год назад

      For sure, these are considerations that need to be taken into account but realistically you're probably not going to setup walls with the intention to create a sealed room.
      I agree though, all of these products have their own set of pro's and con's and its a matter of finding a compromise to best suit your own setup 👍

      Hey Andrew, the other brackets would definitely be viable too. I just don't have experience with them to determine whether they would be high enough to clear that rear tailgate.

    What awning do I need for my 200 series ? That was something I struggled with because I use to think we'd use it all the time while we were on the road travelling Oz full time with our van. I ended up going for the ARB side awning and I have to say, we rarely use it. In fact, I was thinking of selling it at one stage but decided not too. Not sure if I would use a 270 degree awning more, but the idea of it does appeal to me. Great review again and what's with the longer growth on your face ! ??

      Yes, it all comes down to personal circumstances I guess. When I did the Pilbara trip without a trailer it was used almost every day.
