I have been trying to resolve this EXACT issue for 2 days now up until 4 am both nights... finally found this to help me. THANK YOU!!! This has been the only solution that has worked and the program you recommended seems very solid and worth the low price. Thanks for taking the time to make a video showing how you fixed this. My LG UHD tv is kicking ass now as a 2nd monitor for my work in sound design and video editing. You're the man.
THIS is such a valuable video! The latency between my Mac Mini M1 and my Samsung TV was driving me nuts. SwitchResX is such a lifesaver! Thank You Jef for this video and Thank you Stéphane Madrau for such an elegant solution!
You can do exactly the same thing just by going to “Display” configuration for your separate display and clicking in the “Scaled” check box while holding the Option key down. And not paying one single cent.
@@DrunkAncestor Thanks for jumping onto this thread. HOw the heck did you find that information?! I had to give up on the 4K display. usb-c to HDMI cable does the trick?! I can pick one up tomorrow and have another go.
Connected a Sony KE-48A9 to my 2019 MBP with a HDMI cable and an USB-C adapter and thanks to your video I was able to fix the 30 Hz issue by using SwitchResX. Thank you so much. A little bit of data from my side. I noticed there was a latency between my mouse/keyboards inputs and what happened on screen. A friend was able to help me, he told me to switch the TV to Game Mode which I did and it reduced the lag from 93,5ms to 18,5ms which is hardly noticable.
It's been a month with my new Mac Pro with this issue. I happened across this video and wow. I used a slighty higher resolution scale from the Switch Res menu and I dialed it in to how I would like it. I was so bummed after spending all this money on the Mac. Thanks, man!
Hey Jef! FYI - if you hold option before hitting "scaled" on Displays in system preferences, you get these additional options without SwitchResX or any other software
Wow - thanks to both of you. I have been tinkering with this most of the day trying to get my 43" LG 4K TV to actually display 4K (for some drone footage). The magic Option key - why do they hide stuff like this. So system report says I'm getting 4K now, however the MAC thinks I'm on a 61" display (i.e. probably wrong driver). I think I'll try Switchresx to see if it's able to figure it out.
I am using a base Mac Mini M1 with a super cheapie Walmart 43" 4k TV (Thunderbolt to HDMI cable)....Wow ! Sharp and crisp right out of the box and with a little color tweaking, the display turned out to be phenomenal. It (currently) only runs at 30Hz but that is no hindrance to the overall quality. With Mac OS Monterey I can make changes in resolution and scaling with the Mac's Display Preference Panel...no need for Third-party apps. Overall, an incredible value and a great viewing experience.
I purchased a Samsung 43' 4k Crystal UHD tv from Best Buy for use as a Monitor with my M1 Macbook. At first, connecting with generic, HDMI port 1 to Macbook with a 7'n'1 connector.., I was able to get only 30hrtz but still at 4k. Bit more research, I purchased a specifically for Mac 4k@60htz USC -Thunderbolt cable to HDMI ($50 from Best Buy) and works like charm. Not only do I have 4k resolution, but also at 60hrtz for all scaled options. Use of the 'Underscan' feature which offers a smaller display area with 4K resolution (if desired) works flawlessly. All lag is gone. Such a joy to use with so many options! Love it! (On Mac)S Monterey)
You need to look for an "active male mini-displayport to female hdmi adapter", the "active" part in the adapter is the key bit. I don't know about Macbook Pros after 2015 and Macbook Airs but my Macbook Pro 2015 only has an hdmi 1.2 or hdmi 1.4 port I think. Anyways, anything less than hdmi 2.0 can't drive 4k@60Hz. So you can't drive anything at full 4k60 from the HDMI port of these MacBooks whatsoever but we do have a solution in the form of that mini-displayport in our macbooks.
I drive my 65" Samsung 4k from my HTPC, and I can't get 4k@60Hz when the TV has UHD Color enabled (HDR). If I disable that I can get 4k@60Hz from the computer. I haven't tried from my MBP but it might help you get 60Hz AND Retina resolution. The menu item is under Picture -> Advanced Settings (or something like that anyway). See if UHD Color is enabled on the input the Mac is hooked up to.
I'm a Windows 7 guy, but thanks for the tip (love all your videos, Jef!)... I have a 43" 4k TV (at 60hz) which serves as a 3rd display in addition to my main dual 21" HD displays (for my main studio computer), but not as good as my 32" 2k Dell monitor which is also part of the setup (on the side, with a laptop). I think 2k is the magic resolution for music production and video editing. 4k is a bit too small. I'm still figuring it all out, though. One thing I absolutely love about your studio is how minimal it is, with great use of negative space. I have too much gear, and not a lot of negative space. But you're giving me a lot of ideas (and always do, with your videos). Thanks again, Jef!
Hmm...I have an LG C3, iMac 24" (m1) and a 4k/60hz usb-c to HDMI and the max with 60hz is 1920x1080. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to get the same res as you. Could it be that the driver for my m1 iMac 24" is inferior to the drivers of the Mac you have?
Jeff I want to try this with my iMac 27. But I'm going to have to put the Mac on the floor or somewhere out of the way. Do they make Thunderbolt to HDMI cables long enough for this? Anything with "Thunderbolt" in the names is usually really expensive LOL
What about a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter then a long HDMI cable? In theory that should work! (just be aware there are so many different types of cables and adapters! But HDMI can run long enough for this for sure...)

But are those pictures accurate when i do photo editing. that is my question.
This is interesting. I ran dual 23” 1080 for so long, and then finally switched to 34” widescreen at 3440x1440. I really like it so far, especially the straight shot where I’m not looking side to side and the size is nice. If I change, it will probably be a large 4K qled or once lg perfects oled without burnin. I like what you’re doing, so I will be watching how you get on with it.
Yeah, the 34" would be great, I'm really digging this screen so far. The biggest thing I'm noticing is that I had a HUGE bump at 140 Hz when I was recording my voice for videos, it sounded horrible, and I'm realizing it was from my dual monitors that were so close (see old videos). They created a little sound reflection zone, and with this display so far away, I'm not getting that any more. Great for my youtube vids!
hi Jef, thx for this vid. I used to run my cubase windows PC with a 47" LG TV (not 4K at that time) with a signal splitter for 2 VGAs. One for the LG and one for a normal PC-monitor to have effects open there alongside and the Cubase song window on the 47". Unfortunately the LG was way up too high on a sideboard and I kept straining my neck. Then came visual problems with the splitter (all went and stayed purple) so I moved away from going big. I bought 43 inch LG TV and could setup 4K@60Hz but after using for like a month I started getting headache for using it and came back to my Dell 27. I think this is caused by the backlight flickering.
I think you need to buy an adapter that will make you able to use your Thunderbolt ports. A Thunderbolt to HDMI cable and make sure that your TV set supports HDMI 2.0 and above. I haven;t tested that yet myself but that's what I researched for my setup which is a MBP 15 retina (mid-2015) with dual GPUs. I currently have it plugged to a 42 inch HD TV (works fine but since I read a lot I want to upgrade to a sharper image/better reesolution for sharper test - hence a 4K TV).

Hey Jef, great informative video. I would like to go the 65" 4KTV as well with my 2018 15" MacBook Pro. Whats the Samsung model or series? Been following your channel and really dig your content... cheers
I have a similar set up to yours. I bought the SwitchResX and yes it improved the overall performance and reduced the lagginess. However, when I begin producing in Logic and add a few third party plugins the lag begins and it gets quite obnoxious. Do you think adding an external eGPU would help digest those graphics better? For now I've opted for buying the CalDigit TS3 which promises to support one 5K display. Bit pricey but if it doesn't work I'm gonna have to invest some money in buying an external eGPU. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you
I didn't notice any color change at all, that's interesting. Was it a color change that happened on the TV settings perhaps? I'd contact SwitchResX tech support, they got back to me really quickly!
Fyi, DISPLAY PORT (1.3+) connector can run FULL 4K @60Hz using an HDMI adapter that supports 4K@60 and a Or you need HDMI 2.0 video card. For instance, my old ATI Radeon 270x had DP port I use at 60 hz at full 4K with my cheap 4K TV while the HDMI adapter is indeed hardware limited to 30Hz (because not HDMI 2.0) at this res like most older video card (and real mac). Same for my Radeon 290x. Also, you might have been able to achieve that resolution from the OS X Display system properties using Scaling (its just not clear what the options are and very limited compared to options SwitchResX and others like Display Maestro offers) but I could be wrong because your options might have been limited due to how the display is being detected by OS X... I find it so lame that you need to buy an app to have ability to set your display resolution and refresh rate, but that's the Apple way ;-)
bought a Belkin Ultra HD High Speed cable that said "capable of 4k@ 120hz" blah blah didnt work still got 30hz everyone said i needed to get usbc to displayport but this worked just fine lmao, thanks for the video
I have a macbook pro 15" 2018. Just got 2 x 32" LG 4k IPS monitors. 1 is running at 60hz, and 2nd one is running at 30hz, really annoying, and I can't find a solution to fix it. Any ideas to have them both running at 60hz?
+Nico Fyve hey Nico! I tried all forms... the makers of that software replied and said they don’t think true 4K is possible over HDMI... but this resolution has been great so far.
+Jef Gibbons I haven’t found a dongle that can do 32bit, 4k and 60Hz. But via my PC’s graphics card with an HDMI output, I am able to get that combination to my Samsung TV. So HDMI (newer versions) can definitely do it. But dongles maybe not (yet).
I don't get the option 2560x1440 @60Hz, Only @30Hz. Even if I customize a resolution it doesn't work...It works fine on 4k @60Hz but its too small for me. Anyone?
Most TV makers stopped caring about offering decent resolutions to connected boxes. They send out what it can handle in the EDID handshake over HDMI. 1080p TV's often did this very well, and they show up on your mac with 1080p/1080i/720p and framerates of 24/25/30/50/60Hz. That way you can match nearly every kind of video. Since most 4K TV's run on Android, they are locked to 60Hz, as if it was a phone. This also means most movies are not processed at proper 24p, but get upsampled.
Thanks for the vid, tried SwitchResX and 60hz option worked!! This saved me up to $100 trying to buy a displayport KVM switch that still might not work since the perfect KVM with usb c support is still not there yet.
Does anyone have a similarly tried and tested solution for running a daw usably in windows with a 4k tv? Wondering if theres a reasonably priced video card without paying through the nose for unwanted game features...
PLEASE HELP: I have set up my TV through switchresX and the display is great now, BUT I have a really annoying ground issue because of the HDMI connection to my laptop. Anytime I use amp sims with high gain, the HDMI grounding issue is unforgiving and I can’t record when my tv is hooked up. How can I fix this? It’s really annoying to have to only use my laptop screen when trying to record. Defeats the whole purpose of setting up my TV for my studio. Please help :)
Also, my setup is all running off of a power conditioner that is plugged into a UPS battery backup so I know that signal is clean. It’s specifically the TV which doesn’t have a ground pin. I know it’s a common issue to have grounding through an HDMI so I’m thinking maybe if I buy a powered USB hub that has a HDMI port that it could possibly fix the issue? I don’t know I am at a loss.
+Mr Biggs not in my humble opinion! I often try to change them up a bit... but there’s no shame in it. Just imagine you got a buddy over to record it. Only difference is that everyone that has Maschine has that same buddy! But seriously... it’s all good.
the soap opera effect only occurs when your tv has frame interpolation turned on called different things like "trumotion," this setting is 100 percent suck and should always be turned off for any application. but you can't run 120 hz 4k without a top top top of the line hdmi cord anyway and a true 120 hz display.
there is much easier way doing this. Just hold option on your keyboard and click scale in the pref panel. Then it gives you all the available resolutions..
Yes, but it is very weird that TV's don't offer proper framerates on older cables. They could easily request 1080p 24/25/30/50/60fps like their predecessors. Now they all enter junk-mode: 3840x2160 at 30fps, a resolution/framerate combination no movie/video/tv source uses.
The problem is not in the mac, but in the TV. Hook up a 1080p TV and if it is from a half decent brand at least, you get 24/25/30/50/60fps in your Display Settings menu. Somehow 4K TV's push 30hz down your throat. Completely unusable framerate, except for a few RUclips channels. Movies are 24, our PAL broadcasts are at 50. So ideally, check this when buying a TV, and make sure it sends out proper EDID info. Oh, and for movies 120Hz is actually better than 60. You wont get soap opera, a computer does not interpolate, but just shows every frame 5 times. 5x24=120, so judder free. 60/24=2,5 which means you get 2 instances of even frames, and 3 of odd frames, looking very jerky.
You don't need to buy the software. Just go into monitor settings and set "Scaled" and click through lower resolution options until you have 60hz available.
@@DoctorJRx That's a tough call! I know my 3 year old MacBook pro runs faster than my 2013 mac pro, if the processor etc is similar in the mac mini it might not be a bad way to go... but a custom PC would be smoking fast... I've thought of it myself!
@@jefgibbons so I tried the mac mini i7 but 8gig ram 1tb. I was going to up it myself to 64gig but just tried it with 8g. Hey Jef, great informative video. I would like to go the 65" 4KTV as well with my 2018 15" MacBook Pro.
Whats the Samsung model or series? Been following your channel and really dig your content... cheers
Did you buy Switchresx to get a 60fps?
Thank you soooo much! I just did this and it worked! Soooo easy.
When you switched to 1440p, did the text get smaller compared to 4k
I have a similar set up to yours. I bought the SwitchResX and yes it improved the overall performance and reduced the lagginess. However, when I begin producing in Logic and add a few third party plugins the lag begins and it gets quite obnoxious. Do you think adding an external eGPU would help digest those graphics better? For now I've opted for buying the CalDigit TS3 which promises to support one 5K display. Bit pricey but if it doesn't work I'm gonna have to invest some money in buying an external eGPU. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you
thanks for the recommendation. it solves my problem. but the color changed quite a bit when I use SwitchResX. did u notice any?
I didn't notice any color change at all, that's interesting. Was it a color change that happened on the TV settings perhaps? I'd contact SwitchResX tech support, they got back to me really quickly!
is it going to damage macbook batery life due to usb c charging all the time?!
How did you connect your Mac to your TV? HDMI or USB?
Fyi, DISPLAY PORT (1.3+) connector can run FULL 4K @60Hz using an HDMI adapter that supports 4K@60 and a
Or you need HDMI 2.0 video card.
I find it so lame that you need to buy an app to have ability to set your display resolution and refresh rate, but that's the Apple way ;-)
Which TV model is this?
Cool setup! I might do this!
Wth? I'm possibly interested in getting M1 mac, but wth?? Resolution changing via paid app?? No way, that can't be? Is that really mandatory?
bought a Belkin Ultra HD High Speed cable that said "capable of 4k@ 120hz" blah blah didnt work still got 30hz everyone said i needed to get usbc to displayport but this worked just fine lmao, thanks for the video
Hahahahaha that little "Jef" @ the end!
Hermoso ❤️❤️❤️
I have a macbook pro 15" 2018. Just got 2 x 32" LG 4k IPS monitors. 1 is running at 60hz, and 2nd one is running at 30hz, really annoying, and I can't find a solution to fix it. Any ideas to have them both running at 60hz?
hi Jason, i'm looking for buying a lg 32" 4k monitor, did you find a solution?
Is there a way to use the Mac mini m1 on a non 4k TV?
Great question! Through an adapter maybe, but I’m not sure!
It maybe software and os issue.
just curious - are you running straight from an HDMI output on your Mac, or with the help of a dongle to HDMI?
Anyone?
That’s weird, try contacting the switchresx maker?
Most TV makers stopped caring about offering decent resolutions to connected boxes. They send out what it can handle in the EDID handshake over HDMI. 1080p TV's often did this very well, and they show up on your mac with 1080p/1080i/720p and framerates of 24/25/30/50/60Hz. That way you can match nearly every kind of video. Since most 4K TV's run on Android, they are locked to 60Hz, as if it was a phone. This also means most movies are not processed at proper 24p, but get upsampled.
Thank you so much it works for me
Thanks for the vid, tried SwitchResX and 60hz option worked!! This saved me up to $100 trying to buy a displayport KVM switch that still might not work since the perfect KVM with usb c support is still not there yet.
is switchRex one time payment?
Does anyone have a similarly tried and tested solution for running a daw usably in windows with a 4k tv? Wondering if theres a reasonably priced video card without paying through the nose for unwanted game features...
Asus GeForce GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 HDMI DVI Graphics Card (GT1030-2G-CSM) is a possibility but haven’t been able to try it.
what about 3840 x 2160@60 Hz - 4:4:4 with HDMI 2.0 ? Does it work ??
id like to know this too...
On Mac full 4k at 60Hz only with direct Thunderbolt to DisplayPort connector without any dockers
I need to try that!
well a thunderbolt 2 to hdmi work
PLEASE HELP: I have set up my TV through switchresX and the display is great now, BUT I have a really annoying ground issue because of the HDMI connection to my laptop.
Can i use a loop of a bassline i found on maschine in , is that considered cheating?
+Mr Biggs not in my humble opinion! I often try to change them up a bit... but there’s no shame in it. Just imagine you got a buddy over to record it. Only difference is that everyone that has Maschine has that same buddy! But seriously... it’s all good.
thanks Jef!
the soap opera effect only occurs when your tv has frame interpolation turned on called different things like "trumotion," this setting is 100 percent suck and should always be turned off for any application. but you can't run 120 hz 4k without a top top top of the line hdmi cord anyway and a true 120 hz display.
there is much easier way doing this. Just hold option on your keyboard and click scale in the pref panel. Then it gives you all the available resolutions..
To run 4k60 you need a 2.0b HDMI cable (and compatible GPU) that can handle the bandwidth. Beware of cheap cables that claim "4k".
Would a TCLr655 be a good tv for the Mac mini?
looks like my 2011 is too old, bummer. But I have an M1 machine coming in the mail shortly :)
You don't need to buy the software. Just go into monitor settings and set "Scaled" and click through lower resolution options until you have 60hz available.
Which mac are you using?
Mac Pro 2013... I tried all of this on the MacBook Pro 2016 (Touch Bar) as well
@@jefgibbons thanks .. appreciate it .. I'm trying to decide on going Mac mini or custom PC
It was more stable but trying to install all software and plugins was not going well for me. Way to time consuming. So returned it, plus 1tb I think was not enough for me. But once I get more time on my hands I think il do the mac mini again but with 2tb SSD. Apple products hold their value. I do want to build my own PC at some point. I also want to see what the 16 inch MacBook pro coming is gonna be like.
@@DoctorJRx Yeah, 8 GB is not enough for sure, the new 16inch MacBook Pro will be sweet, but I'm a little reserved on the laptops right now after having the logic board fail on mine after 1.5 years, then the Touch Bar failed as well! Luckily my CC extended the warranty on my purchase so I got it covered ($1300 repair!!!).
there are big monitors like LG 55 with DisplayPort its run Mac 4k @ 60hz . your option is not good.
Cool ✅ Jef
Thanks Kiel Hall! Always appreciate your support...
Маш их баярлалаа
bruh wtf you just need display port to thunderbolt cable you don't need to do all that shit
My god everyone is clueless here 🤣
So to summarise, save yourself a bunch of cash get an older monitor and move it closer.
Still having the 4k TV up and running? Or did you go back to dual monitors?
