I'm just picturing the long-haired DOD fan at the music store in the 90's who we all thought was a crackhead for saying "Trust me, these DOD pedals are amazing!! Better than Boss!"
I started collecting them and repopulating my board. Whateva... I do what I want! I don't think they were ever bad pedals, but there was a period where I started associating them with scummy pawn shops, thus a stigma. It didn't help that us 80s kids who had them and then matured into our 20s in the 90s started seeing the marketing and designs seemingly still aimed at 15 year olds with dumb shit like "EXTREME" plastered all over everything. Yeah, the Lamb series, and your Grunge pedals and all that are revered now, but we weren't into it, and those things didn't sell. I honestly do blame the marketing at that point.
I’m so glad you mentioned how different vibratos can be. Sometimes I feel like the “all these effects are just chorus” crowd out there gets too much air time. Really like seeing those signal examples. It’s so helpful in understanding an effect. That second jam was a pure joy. ✌️😌🎸
Oof, I'm glad I haven't seen the "all these effects are just chorus" opinions represented all that much, I think my reaction to that might be what ultimately gets me kicked off social media altogether. You've got me thinking about a "dumbest ideas I've seen on the internet" themed episode, which could definitely feature that and "The Boss DS-1 is digital because it has chips in it"
I had one of these in the late 90s & wish I had kept it. At the time I was looking for a straight tremelo pedal & the Vibro Thang wasn't cutting it but it's definitely cool. One thing though it coloured the sound quite a bit in bypass mode.
Thanks for feeding my confirmation bias. I've been telling people for years that this is a Leslie &/or Harmonic Trem. /// BTW, GREAT CHANNEL! I've been watching gear demos for years & I rarely (if ever) find anyone bringing a new format.
Thank you so much! The Vibro Thang really is something special, kind of an in-between, but enough of its own thing to stand out. You might also want to look at the Caroline Arigato (I have a demo video, but as usual, Andy absolutely SLAYS in his video ruclips.net/video/c2KBzXSVU9g/видео.html) The Arigato was inspired by, the VibroThang, the MXR Phase 100, and a few other favorites, I believe.
I actually never listened to Bridge of Sighs until very recently. Saw a vinyl copy at a sale and picked it up. Now I get what the fuss is about, what a great sound.
I had one of these in the late 90s. I asked for a tremolo at Guitar Center and they suggested this pedal. So I bought it. Used it for a few months. Lent it to a classmate and I never saw it again. A total tone suck of a pedal, but it was really neat for what it was.
I didn't notice much tone suckage from this, but I also didn't really A/B it in and out of the chain. Kind of wish I had now that a few people have brought it up. If there's anything I've learned from the comments in here, it's that nobody should ever lend anybody any gear, especially in high school. So many cases of guitars, amps, and pedals going missing after a kid just randomly changes schools during the summer. I lost an Arion distortion pedal that way... I think I may have got the better end of the deal.
I did a quick video of my subdecay Quasar in the vibrothang mode - it's not quality video but just thought you'd be curious about the Quasar it's a fantastic pedal - so many phaser and filter sounds and great tremolo variations as well. It's smooth n slick like Analog should be.
I got one of these coming in the mail. I've wanted one for a long time, so once Josh Scott had it in his vibrato vid the other day, I needed to pull the trigger on one before prices exploded, which they already kind of have. Given this is a Jason Lamb era pedal, it's going to be a different animal than everything else in the category. I prefer my modulation pedals to impart a more subtle effect and this model can do that pretty wonderfully.
Awesome, enjoy it! It really is an amazing pedal, and you can find a wide variety of sounds in there. I think the fact that it doesn’t have to be a tremolo or a phaser or a vibrato helps it be a little more “whatever you need it to be”.
I had 2 devices decades ago. The 1st one sounded great but stopped working after 2 weeks, the 2nd sounded bad... I guess both were not made in the USA anymore. Anyway great video!
Thank you! That's interesting, I wonder if there's really much of a difference between the earlier and later ones. Looking at the circuit board here, I'm fairly confident I could fix just about anything given enough time, it's all full-sized components, and I pretty much have the schematic memorized at this point.
Well made, informative video as usual! Thanks for diving deeper in function of effects - it's very interesting. I think, the Digitech- Hardwire Tremolo uses a similare circuit for the Vibro mode - maybe. :)
Good point, I should have checked out the Vibro modes of that and compared it. I did a video with the TR-7 and really liked it, but I think sharing the LFO between the Tremolo and Vibe/Phaser is pretty durned unique.
Great video! I am glad that someone is setting the record straight on these pedals. They are kind of a sleeper, in my opinion, but I've still yet to pull the trigger based on the times I have tried them and I feel like the LFO range or speed wasn't quite what I would like out of this pedal. It's sort of similar to Harmonic Tremolo, but not the same topology. I think I'd rather get the latter for that sort of chewy warble than the Vibro Thang, myself. I may try to build one of each though.
It definitely has a bit of the Harmonic Tremolo vibe (lol pun) to it. My favorite chewy tremolo is the Supro by a longshot. Nothing can touch the feel of that thing. Suhr Jackrabbit is good, I'm also a fan of the Caroline Parabola for their straight-tremolo effects. I could see myself using the VibroThang for adding some movement to lead passages with a hint of phaser. Definitely a neat pedal, glad I have one now.
@@StompboxBreakdown I will have to check out demos of the Supro and Suhr. I love tremolo in various ways, from buttery early 60s Fender amp bias trem to choppy triggered-gate effects tempo-synched to the song and everything in between. Have you tried the EBS Tremolo? It's a real sleeper for sure. I bought one when they were blowing them out for a good price a few years back and it's become an absolute favorite. The EBS does both amplitude tremolo and a filtered "tremolo" that's unlike anything else I've tried, besides the Gristleizer I built years ago. It does it in stereo, with stereo INS and OUTS. If you haven't tried this out and you're a fan of these sorts of things, please do yourself a favor and dig in. It's pretty great.... weighs a ton, though. Ha! Beyond that, I still love my old Boss PN-2 and my very old Kay Tremolo, which is more of the choppy "repeat percussion" effect like the old Vox and Jen-made boxes. The OLDEST that I have, though, and damn this thing sounds good for what an archaic thing it is, is my Dearmond Tremolo Control. Have you tried one of those? It's such a neat trick. There's a non-concentric cam on a motor inside which shakes a vial of what's essentially Windex, as far as chemical composition is concerned, and that sloshing liquid shorts out against an electrode in the vial, grounding the signal in time to the shaking from the motor. It's like a game of Mouse Trap, but it sounds great.
STOMPBOX BREAKDOWN, Which rock bands used the DOD Vibro Thang pedal? I think Blind Melon used it not sure but try to find out which 90's bands used this pedal. You can get this same effect by using the univibe or dunlop Rotovibe in VIB MODE then using a Tremolo pedal. The vibro Thang is pretty much a 3 Stage Phase shift phase based vibrato with NO MIXING of the dry signal then uses a tremolo pedal. The key thing about the Vibro Thang is that its a 3 stage Phase shift based vibrato compared to the univibe or dunlop Rotovibe being a 4 stage phase shift phase based vibrato. This is a big difference because of the ODD order of phase shift. This was somewhat trying to get a "harmonic tremolo effect"
Hell yeah the vibro thang the forgotten lamb series pedal there's two versions one is good one sucks and has no range so yeah the vibrato is phase vibrato like the vibrato mode on a univibe I think they were attempting to get harmonic tremolo like on an old fender amp
They have different names on the knobs and the paint job is different they also have the old footswitch on the other version I think the numbers are the same but I remember my local music store back in the 90s had both versions I'll try to find a picture of the other version ok I found two different versions other than the one you have one has tremolo/phaser on it and the other has different knob names that one has a bigger speed range I think
Had that one for some years, thought it was just ok. Weird how hard it is to get a satisfying tremolo (amplitude style) sound, but maybe I was wrong it turns out to expect that from this pedal if it’s more a vibrato or harmonic trem or. Hmm.
I love that DOD is finally getting some love and respect. They made so many great pedals.
I'm just picturing the long-haired DOD fan at the music store in the 90's who we all thought was a crackhead for saying "Trust me, these DOD pedals are amazing!! Better than Boss!"

"finally"... hahahaha

Great demo. I really like how your videos include engaging dialogue, tech/specs, great jams and pedal history all rolled into one.
Thank you so much!!
I totally agree! ... and I've just bought one because of this ;-)
Greatest pedal centered channel for 2022
Thank you!! I really appreciate that

Yeah! It happened! Thanks for making this a priority. Neato.
Thanks for the idea!!

I remember this pedal but never plugged in and took a listen. Some scary accurate Robin Trower vibe/phase tones!
I actually never listened to Bridge of Sighs until very recently. Saw a vinyl copy at a sale and picked it up. Now I get what the fuss is about, what a great sound.
@@StompboxBreakdown That strat/marshall combination is very common, but players like robin trower who can make it sound unique are rare

Could you breakdown the Heptode Virtuoso Phase Shifter, the Neo Instruments Ventilators and the Drybell Vibe Machine?
I don’t have any of those so… might be a while

The later Chinese version is capable of faster speeds. I don’t know the technical details but I’ve A/Bed them and own the Chinese version.

So what we have here is the first harmonic tremolo pedal?

I don’t have one of those but I *do* have another Dano rotary I might cover at some point
Nice sounding pedal! 👍👏
Do tonelok pm-7 please
I had one and loved how it sounded. It was a total tone sucker though. I usually don't complain about such things, but that pedal was too much.
That's what I'm hearing. That's a shame, wonder if it was implemented differently than the other pedals like it.
Never heard of this one. Pretty cool. ☮️
I didn’t either before it was recommended. Definitely a cool choice for modulation
