Great soundtrack with a variety of musical styles from the early 80's. This is on my playlist, and everybody always asks me where it's from. One of my favorite songs.

I love the fact that an entirely new generation is discovering this song. It came out in 1982; and it highly impacted both youth culture and the entertainment industry. If you only knew how many TV shows and movies used that song! It was iconic from the moment they recorded it. What's best is that both of you (Brad & Lex) are exploring music from beyond your generational milieu. I see two beautiful, young people pushing beyond the horizons that society has attempted to pigeon hole us all into. I'm subbing... even if only to see your reactions... regardless of what you're viewing. As Spock would say: "Live long; and prosper!"
He also produced/engineered/mixed albums for Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, The Tragically Hip, The Cult, Bryan Adams, Michael Buble, The Offspring, among many many others.
From Vancouver British Columbia, Canada has brought out some pretty cool bands... I remember this, I can't believe it was 1982, where did the time fly,,, WOW, great song guys, thank for playing it.
I remember this song from an episode of "Miami Vice". The Tubbs character was pursuing a female suspect/undercover cop thru some dock area and this song was playing as backing music. I miss the '80s.
One can't talk about The Payolas without the acknowledgement that the naming of the band itself was a statement (protest) against the music industry. At that time bands couldn't get air time on the radio without some "payola" to the powers that be.
Using that name hurt them with radio play in the US in a big way. US radio stations did NOT want people to be reminded of the payola scandal in any way shape or form.
Great to see songs like this from the late 70s / early 80s new wave period .. Lots of wonderful, exciting and interesting music came out of it , including many records from relatively little known artists such as this group .. Thanks for being prepared to check out unusual things that hardly anyone else is reacting to .. Great channel !
My dad's friend's neighbour was Paul Hyde in the 90's and 2000's. I don't remember him much but I'll never forget his accent. He churned out some amazing music.
Bob Rock was in this band. He’s better known as Metallica’s producer among other artists . Later on the recorded an album under Rock and Hyde. Paul Hyde was sang for the Payolas
They got that Rush and Police vibe 100. 2 Big names come to mind, Bob Rock famous producer of Many talented bands and Mick Ronson from the Spiders from Mars. Mick produced this slice and adding some bars as well. Very clean sound.
Great song; great reaction. Payola$ has a series of hits in Canada in the early 80’s and won a couple of Juno awards for Eyes of a Stranger. The Payola$ included Paul Hyde and Bob Rock. Bob Rock went on to be one of the top producers of the 80’s/90’s producing Metallica, Motley Crüe, Aerosmith, Tragically Hip, Brian Adams and many more.
Aside from this channel it seems to be the same CanCon all the time at other channels. How's aboot some other groups and not necessarily their biggest overplayed hits but still well known songs such as: Rough Trade - All Touch, The Box - Closer Together, Glass Tiger - Diamond Sun, Doug and the Slugs - Day By Day, Chilliwack - Fly at Night, The Spoons - Romantic Traffic, Prism - Night to Remember, Stampeders - Oh My Lady, The Jitters - Last of the Red Hot Fools, David Wilcox - Downtown Came Uptown, Edward Bear - You, Me and Mexico, Partland Brothers - Soul City, Honest Man
@@jethro1963 I'll add some Odds to that list: Someone Who's Cool, Eat My Brain or - if they're really bold - Heterosexual Man. Maybe some Harlequin or Streetheart tunes as well..

Thank you so much, Brad and Lex for posting your reaction to this song. I enjoy your channel a great deal and i subscribe a a couple of other similar channel. Yours is the only one to review this songs. So great that you all are the first, and only.
This song reminds me of the first party I went to in Toronto, I was visiting my sister, she was working, so her one of her friends brought me to a party; back in the fall of 1982, it was the first time I heard this song.
The bassist is Bob Rock. He produced Bon Jovi, Slippery when Wet. Motley Crue, Dr. Feelgood. And Metallica's Black Album. Not bad for a boy from British Columbia!
I saw them back then on the tour supporting this album. Great concert. They had Mick Ronson on keyboards that night! He produced this album with them in Vancouver. Ronson was a great keyboard player and producer even though his claim to fame is as great guitarist (David Bowie's guitarist on albums like "Ziggy Stardust"). Half way through the show they introduced Mick as playing keyboards that night. Standing ovation! Obviously Ronsons fame as Bowie sideman was still appreciated by the folks there that night. 😀
Everyone has already stated this was on the soundtrack of the valley Girls movie. Loved that movie when I was young. Eaten By the Monster of Love was my favorite. Lol. All music was fun in that film.
I always thought of the lyrics as being about a mysterious woman that he can't really get close to, no matter how hard he tries. But I like your interpretation that his partner has mentally checked-out of the relationship. Cool song, and I never really appreciated the drum/percussion arrangement until now.
"Eyes of a Stranger" is a song by the Payolas, featured on the album No Stranger to Danger in 1982 and released as a single that year. It appeared in the Miami Vice episode "Badge of Dishonor".

Early 80's creative New Wave, their were a lot of unusually great tunes back then.. another one is "Are You Ready For the Sex Girls" by the Gleaming Spires..
My 80s ears don't make a metal-connection in the vocal. The reggae and strats are like New Wave brethren of The Police and The Fixx. As for the vulnerability, and moving on... indeed...!
If you weren’t already my favorite, you reacted to the Payola$ and sealed it! This was in heavy rotation at the college radio station went the album dropped.
Right!? I thought their only chance would be on an '80s alt rock, new wave, post-punk, ska type of stream. Something more specific. Lol. But, hey! It did it finally.
This was actually new wave, slow punk, dance, reggae. Like The Police and Oingo Boingo. This wasn't heavy metal lol. Payolas have some good videos. Check out their other music. This song was on an '80s movie Valley Girl, funny movie. 🎥
This is a pretty obscure and forgotten mid 1980s hit. But a great song. Great job reacting to it! For some reason, another song from this era that sounds nothing like this song but that I associate it with this song is Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't it be Good." I think I bought both albums at about the same time.
Yes, the beat does have a combination of reggae and hard rock/ heavy metal. Back in the day (early 1980’s) this was called New Wave music- very popular. There was a really cool video last year, taken down since that featured old time hockey goalies with this song. Sure miss it!
