Holy crap!!! This is oxygen for a Paul Hyde super fan who has heard so very little from him in years and years. THANK you for posting! Don’t know how you got him to sit down for this but it was so great to hear his voice again. Payolas were huge among me and my friends in the way back but we’ve also kept up with Paul’s solo work and we all consider him one of the very best. Nobody delivers vocally like Mr Hyde. One of a kind. What a treat!

Hey Matt, his PR team reached out and asked if I’d be into talking to him. I jumped at the chance!

Paul Hyde is just the Greatest. He's got one of those voices where: he could sing a set of encylopedias and I would buy it. I'd like to think I've collected every CD he's put out, and I will be a VERY HAPPY CAMPER whenever he releases something new!!! Thanks for convincing Paul to chat, and Thanks for posting this!

I enjoyed watching this video. Their music was a big part of my high school experience back in 82-83. Loved them then, miss them now. All the best.

I wished he talked more about his punk influences.
I remember 1982. That’s when I really got into music. No Stranger to Danger was the first album I bought that fell under the main genre of alternative.
That same year, I heard U2, XTC, The Police, The English Beat, The Clash, etc.
My older brother was already into Punk. New Wave was my introduction to the ultimate genre.
I would get into Punk, Protopunk, and everything that would come after New Wave.
The Payola$ were apart of that.
    Was in music myself.
Anyway, a big thank you to Paul and Bob and the other members. ☺️
BTW, in high school a classmate had the same haircut as Paul, as seen in Eyes. Looked a lot like him. 😉

Awsome singer. I still listen too his older song's. My favorite was, YOUR THE ONLY LOVE, & EYE'S OF A STRANGER.

It's shocking that their back catalog is unavailable in any sort of format, including compact, disc or streaming. I haven't listened to this entire interview but I will .but is there a reason why none of this stuff is readily available?

Wow, what a great find. I saw the Payola$ at some dive bar either on or near Hastings, don’t remember the name of the place now, but it was very early 80’s. They were punk city back then. Saw them a few more times in the early 80’s, once with the trans chick but can’t remember her name. They had a song on local radio together. I think I also saw them at the Fraser Arms a couple times. All those places are just a fog in my memory now but there were a number of great local bands. I think they played the Orpheum or Commodore with Pachena and another time with Kd Lang that was also a great show. I think the Kd Lang show was New Year’s Eve. Great memories. Loved the Payola$ and they deserved way way more publicity than they got. I think their name was a problem for American radio due to the problems in the industry with real payola. Too bad…

Great interview! Payolas opened the show that was my first concert at BC Place (not my first concert). Payolas, Bryan Adams, Supertramp. All were so good (well Supertramp, was kinda lypsyncing... sigh).

I saw Supertramp at the Pacific Coliseum before BC Place was built and they were definitely NOT lip syncing. It was a fabulous concert and one of the few that sounded decent inside that place. I was close to the front and knew they didn’t lip sync. It was live as can be.

Will there be a anthology in CD’s form, not the greatest hits?

Too bad they just kind of disappeared. They were great to see live, China Boys and Soldier were my faves. I think that with them asking David Foster to produce them was their biggest mistake.

  • @DanielC__

Interesting to hear him say the Album with Foster “sucked” because for them, he was right. Mick Ronson was way better for their music. They edgy stuff like China Boys, Eyes of a Stranger, I’ll Find Another, Romance, Some Old Song, etc was lost with Foster and if you ever saw them live you’d laugh at them singing a song like “Here’s the World For Ya” and the other whimpy junk. 🤮
