  • In the 1980's, there was no band as big as Huey Lewis and the News. Thanks in part to being prominently featured on the upstart music video cable network MTV, Huey Lewis and the News hit the big time in 1982 with the release of their second album, Picture This, and then became a global phenomenon thanks to the success of their third album, 1983's Sports.
With massive hits like "I Want a New Drug," "The Heart of Rock & Roll," "Hip to Be Square," and "The Power of Love," and a featured spot in the 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox, the band literally created the soundtrack for the decade. Here's the untold truth of Huey Lewis and the News.

What's your favorite song from Huey Lewis and the News?

Whole lotta lovin' off of their FORE! Album. Underrated song. Unique throwback to when Country and Rock were close together. Think Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Elvis era. Great song, acapella opening, you can hear the bass singing keyboard player throughout the whole song, harmonica solo and, great guitar. Not enough bass singers anymore. When you listen to it you can't make up your mind if it's a rock song or a country song, maybe it's kind of bluesy too. Huey Lewis and the News are a real band, they sing that song just as good live as they do on the recording. Love those guys, miss em' something awful.

Didn't even mention their album FORE!. FORE! was almost as big as Sports. Man I miss those guys. Still singing 2 or 3 a capella songs every show up until they had to stop touring. Wonderful voices. For some reason, Mario, the original bass player showed up to a show here in Michigan several years ago. It was a non smoking venue but he joined the band for a several song encore and lit up a smoke anyway. What a great show. Huey Lewis and the News with Don Felder. I'll never forget it.

Huey will always be among my all time favorites. I was fortunate to see them live 20 or so years ago, and it still sticks out in my mind as one of the best concerts I've ever attended. These days I chuckle when listening to their hit Workin' For a Livin' because of the line "hundred dollar car note, two hundred rent" because of obvious reasons. 😆

Great story. Huey Lewis and the News is my favorite band of all time and deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I do need to correct this story though. Picture This was the second album and opened up touring opportunites for HLN. Also, the introduction of MTV and the MUSIC VIDEO helped to vault HLN to superstrardom. The story discussed SPORTS being followed by Small World. SPORTS was followed by FORE! Hip to be Square was on the FORE! album. Both albums were huge Multi Platinum sellers. It was following FORE! that Small World was released, followed by Hard at Play and then Plan B. During this time HLN continued to tour and drew their loyal fans at numerous concert venues, mostly smaller capacity theatres which were great.

@@jenh9426 That’s absolute bs lmao. Ghostbusters were using the song I want a new drug before ray parker’s song, then when HLN said no to ghostbusters using New Drug, ray parker made the ghostbusters song which is an obvious copy.
