    Absolutely awesome vid.. I repaired EMD loco electrical systems for 6 years and never once got to take one out for main line testing... you can’t imagine how frustrating that is...

    When we went on the Kuranda railway in Cairns I said to the train crew that their dynamics must get one hell of a workout going down the range, they said they don’t have dynamics! The reverse curves do the job!

      They still use the air brake to hold it back. But no dynamic brake makes it less efficient.

      I asked the same question to the drivers when we were there in 2008.

      Correct 1720s don't have dyno, but it would be handy down there.

    Hmm. Same controls, different location. I wonder what that silver box in the top part of the screen to our right of the speedometer is

    Impressive video! What is the banging sound and the fluctuation of the ammeter at 41 seconds?

      That's an interesting question, the bump was most likely when the back of the groan started to descend the grade behind and it will run Into you, I believe the Lead unit was the only one with working dynamic Brake so the train can chase you and give you a bit of a "roost!" haha

    What makes that sound, the traction motors ? And why ? Because they don't make that sound when they are in power mode.

    • @AUSSIETRAINDRIVER
      @AUSSIETRAINDRIVER  2 года назад

      They do make noise but they are louder when they are generating power.

    What do you do with the power build up with the dinemic brake

    • @dancoulson6579
      @dancoulson6579 3 года назад +1

      It's usually discharged accross a bank of resistors to generate heat. The heat is then blown out the side vents with powerful fans.
      Instead of generating heat + friction and wear, you just generate heat alone. Much better.
      Some very modern trains _can_ donate the power back to the third rail, or overhead wires. But it's very complex thing to do.

      @@dancoulson6579 i thought only electric trains do that

    • @AUSSIETRAINDRIVER
      @AUSSIETRAINDRIVER  Месяц назад

      Yes only electric trains can put it back into the overhead or 3rd rail. Otherwise it's dissapated as heat.

    I see more application of the Dynos but the speedo still crept up!

    • @AUSSIETRAINDRIVER
      @AUSSIETRAINDRIVER  4 года назад +4

      Yes, 2 dynos working, but 4000t of train on 1:50 gradient pushed against the dyno.
