In an ideal world and even today's world, we should always keep talks open, regardless of government we're talking about, but there are limits to that, just look at Russia for instance, the west has shown a lot of weakness towards Russia for over a decade, there were a lot of warning signs that the west needed to put its foot down on Russia, from them taking over Crimea, to Russia playing in western politics and to all the poison and killings that were being done under the government of Putin and yet, the west ignored it and turned a blind eye and only started to change once Putin invaded Ukraine.
We had many warning signs on Russia over the last 10 years but we didn't listen in the west, there are many warning signs with China but I think talks would be better than confrontation and China has far more to lose with the west then Russia does so the diplomatic options whiles being tough is probably the best solution on China, especially when it comes to China and Taiwan and how China is conducting business in Africa and other places around the world which are like predatory practice.
