Industry is the core of strength, and China is winning in major industy, now China account for 30% global industry output and still growing, it is projected to be 50% globally eventually ; US 16.8% and declining. In only 10 years, US will lose the competition.

Judging from the degree of market openness, how many American companies are making huge profits in China, and how many Chinese companies are able to operate normally in the United States? I would like to ask, is China not open or is the United States closed?
There are many Chinese companies operating in the USA and do so with far far less restrictions, impediments and hassles. They don't even need to partner with an American owner!
Depending on the industry, many US companies get forced into a "partnership" for intellectual property transfer. Would Chinese companies be fine with this arrangement? Also, US has more regulations around labor, warranties for products, ect that make it cost prohibitive to enter the market.
I think it should be a 2 way traffic Chinese high tech companies not be able to access American company American market. they Chinese company , They also telling other countries not to get done business with China. How is that fair??
And the other benefit you failed to mention is that US might provide Chinese company with its abundant of lazy workers.

Well the civic advancement of patenting made it so that people actually had a reason to invest effort into inventing new things because they got temporary exclusive rights to sell them. It was and still is a significant contributor to the advancement of human civilisation. But when you allow anyone to use a technology that someone just researched, you've taken away their monetary incentive for having made it in the first place.

As a Chinese, I am glad to see some foreign comapanies are leaving, because it means native brand are thriving and more competitive.
The young generation love homegrown products and be proud of our own products more than ever before, Huawei phone, BYD car etc. It may has something to do with national pride but more importantly these homemade product are simply just much much better.

Saying 750,000 jobs makes the implications of total decoupling seem small. 750,000 people are less than 0.3% of the US population. The US economy added 2.7 million jobs last year. The real costs are a lot higher, of course, I just think 750K jobs is a weird line.

American companies thinking India can replace China are in for a rude shock. China may not be easy to navigate but neither is India. At least in China, you can make money like all the big names are... Tesla, apple, Intel, Nvidia, GE, GM, Ford, caterpillar, Starbucks, McDonalds, Yum brand etc... Not so in India.. People are at subsistence levels in India with hardly much material disposable income. As for exports, a single Chinese factory is worth several Indian ones in terms of output. Ask apple.
American Companies are looking at Mexico. India is in the mix but Mexico is where you will see physical plants built out.
The problem for India is that it is an autocracy with bad human right records.

no，Americans have not seriously studied the reality of Chinese politics. China is still elite politics in essence. The seven people on the table have the highest power, but they can’t solve too many problems. They must choose the solutions proposed by the elites in the industry in each policy.
The Chinese government has put on a ”communist“ hat, but he can give up short-term fairness for efficiency at any time.
The efficiency of the U.S. economy is absolutely not low, especially on Wall Street. They have incomparable efficiency to get the maximum profit. Don‘t forget that the U.S. economy has been growing rapidly, even if the factories have been moved away.
Both countries need mature and cool-headed politicians to lead instead of the hot-headed ones that we have now.

That sounds like it's from the last century. To me, it sounds like a naive battle, a childish kid saying my toy is more powerful than yours. No one in China, including the Communist Party, would say that China's system is superior to that of the U.S. The Communist Party has always propagated that each country has its own right to choose its own path, and that the system that suits its own situation is the best. It's a great pity that the US ambassador still thinks it's a competition of ideologies.Perhaps as an American viewer, this interview is very objective and the content shown is very much in line with the general American public's perception of China, but as an international student, I found that often the two sides cared about completely different things, which shows that both sides may not understand what the other side is saying. Unfortunately, the current rivalry between the two sides makes cultural exchanges very difficult, and in the long run, it will only increase the stereotypes of each other. Of course, for the strong side, the United States, there is the option of either confrontation or a soft policy, with the former probably being less costly. For the weaker party, China, there may be no choice, because the choice is not theirs. I do think that American ideas of governance are some of the best on earth, and that other nations should adopt them. Now, forcing those ideas on people is never gonna work. The only condition where we should militarily intervene to alter another nation's politics is if there's a genuine desire in that nation to install a democratic system. If it's a place where our troops won't be seen as liberators, our troops probably shouldn't be there.

The ambassador's final comments consider China's perspective from the U.S. point of view. Unlike the Soviet Union, China does not have a need to export its ideology. What China needs is to become wealthier and stronger to protect its prosperity and cleanse shame - unifying Taiwan. If China's influence is projected globally and has the potential to replace the United States, it may not necessarily be a bad thing for the world. The global competition between China and the United States might be a blessing for many countries. For example, the competition between China and Japan not only brought high-speed trains to Indonesia but also advanced high-speed train manufacturing technology. If many countries hope for China's peaceful rise and benefit from it, the United States should accept it, and can only accept it. The world is no longer a unipolar world after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

Yes but unifying Taiwan requires starting World War III and collapsing the global economy. The Taiwanese continue to vote for DPP and younger Taiwanese are far less likely to identify as Chinese compared to older generations. Therefore unification will not be achieved by peaceful means and will require the CCP to launch an amphibious invasion more difficult than D Day while Taiwanese, Japanese, and American anti ship missiles rain on the invasion force
China may be an equal to the United States some day but overtaking the United States in Global dominance and global cultural influence will probably never happen. There’s a lot of things about Chinese culture mixed with communist ideology that are never going to be accepted by a free market society. Just like how there’s a lot of things in western culture that just don’t work in China. For this to work out peacefully, China needs to learn how to be more free, and the United States needs to learn how to be more accepting… and China needs to let Taiwan go, that is never going to end well.
This ambassador is one of the few extreme ideologues in the US government who hates China very much. For example, he recently said (absolutely not willing to live in a world where China is the dominant player).

Certainly, the separation of Taiwan from China is absolutely impossible. The combination of Taiwan's independence and direct U.S. intervention would almost certainly lead to a nuclear war, pending an irreparable defeat for China in conventional warfare. Due to the ongoing political unrest in Hong Kong and the current retrogressive practices of the Chinese government regarding democracy and freedom, the implementation of a "One Country, Two Systems" approach through peaceful negotiations in the Taiwan issue has become almost impossible. However, achieving it through force is not entirely ruled out. Taiwan is merely a pawn for the United States, and if not for the Korean War, Taiwan would likely have been unified with China long ago. I have encountered Chinese individuals with differing political views, but I have not come across anyone (excluding Taiwanese Chinese) who agrees with Taiwan's independence. It didn't happen when China was weak in the past, and it is even less likely to happen in the future.
The isolation of the People's Republic of China has indeed resulted in significant cultural and ideological differences from the widely accepted mainstream thoughts and cultures in today's Western society on a global scale. However, it's important not to forget that Taiwan has successfully established and operated a democratic system over several decades, and mainland China also possesses the capacity for tolerance and absorption. In fact, before the fall of the Qing Empire more than 110 years ago, it had already established a parliamentary system in various provinces. Some provincial governments were even forced to cease operations because the parliament did not approve the government's budget, similar to the frequent budget disputes in the U.S. federal government. Unfortunately, this system did not bring about any substantial changes in China's power dynamics. Subsequent turmoil, warlord conflicts, and Japan's aggression during World War II have marred the modern history of this ancient nation. Today, as China gradually becomes wealthier and stronger, the country is regaining its confidence. Although a clear path for China to synchronize quickly with the world is not visible, if democracy and freedom are indeed universal values, their arrival in China is only a matter of time.
One reason that many foreign companies left China is because these foreign companied can't make easy money any longer due to stronger China domestical companies. for example, the FORD, GM car makers are losing market share quickly in China market. So why would they invest more in China.
Well, that's certainly a factor, but the truth is actually more interesting than that. It's cause the US is moving manufacturing to Mexico for cheaper labor. As China grows so does it's standard of living and that's causing stuff to be more expensive there.
It's finally gotten to that point where it actually costs LESS money to build entire infrastructure on the Mexican border to support manufacturing there than it is to continue using Chinas already built infrastructure.
Plus covid showed the world how unreliable it is for complex supply chains to rely on another country all the way across the pacific ocean. Any delays from that far away can have devastating consequences.
South America and Central America will be being built up here soon and overtake China for the western worlds source of manufacturing. Mexico has already overtaken China as the US main trading partner as of the last year or 2.
And they are eager for growth just as the Chinese was before all this began. Poor and hungry. As well as having a strong work ethic built into their culture, very strong, both Central America and Chinese have such strong work ethic.

Moreover, they were also spooked by their western govts constant saber-rattling like ratcheting up military & diplomatic tensions playing the Taiwan card more intensively, more frequent close-up military surveillance & spying, FONOPs, getting its Filipino poodle to stir up SCS tensions, constant talk of de-risking or decoupling, adding more Chinese companies on "Entities List" & impose restrictions on tech investment in China. Did you not notice the questioning of Tik Tok’s CEO by the US congress about American users’ data? Decoupling is an American and EU’s driven policy. China had to adjust its national security policies to these changes.

It doesn’t make sense that they would need money from banks to finish/continue construction when they already received the money from the buyer. Granted, people finally stopped paying but only after they found out their units would never be built.
Evergrande was taking money from both the banks and property purchasers. The funds were then put against the next development which is their secret for fast expansion.
The interview is monologue but the comments reflect a more clear picture. Interesting!

This interview is great , opened a window for a fair view of what China and US relationship is in 2024. But I don’t believe that the two countries are an ideological competition , imagine that one day India becomes the second largest economy in the world , will US still be able to hold the coalition with India?
By the time India becomes second, China will be 3 times US economy.

I think my biggest eye-opening comment made in that interview was when he described Our agricultural exports totaling $40 billion a year to China and how we don’t want to lose that, yet we handed $80 billion without blanking an eye to the Ukraine. Clearly, there is a disconnect on how to spend money in this country and what’s important.

Having a national currency as the reserve currency means that the reserve currency country must constantly export more debt (money) to supply the demand of the rest of the world. When this system was set up, the economist Keynes was completely against a national currency being the reserve currency, but he was overruled by US imperialists.

When I visited China in the fall of 2019, people working for the government were mean--yelling at everyone, and especially American tourists. Also, there are cameras everywhere, constantly monitoring everything. Not very pleasant. Although the food was great and the average people I met were wonderful, especially dancing in the park. Still...things would really need to change for me to want to go there again.
Compare to how Asians, especially Chinese, have been treated here in USA, random attacks on the streets, some even got murdered, Americans have been treated pretty well I would say.

Average Chinese people are lovely and are just used to taking abuse from their government & authorities always & just stay silent in the face of evil. So happy when I left that place for good. I went to China in 2019 and I absolutely loved it. The people there were so nice and welcoming and helpful to me whenever I asked questions for directions….if I get a chance, I would love to visit again.

The first concern is the allegiance American corporations in China would have to the US in a war with China, especially if the US economy slows down, currently, its GDP is 3%. Second concern is that American ideas are not working for Americans as part of those ideas hollowed out the industrial manufacturing base of the US to produce in China.

We certainly are in a grand global fight over philosophy. On one side is the West, whose ideals involve the more complex but durable democratization of public discourse. On the other is what a Russian friend of mine describes as the "Orientalist" mindset, the traditional and simpler but more socially brittle arrangement where lesser nations basically yield their dreams to the current "reality" (i.e. their regional hegemon) indefinitely.
Depending on which nations you ask, the world already exists under the “orientalist” model, where the West has the top of the heap and smaller nations have needed to accept this reality.
The real issue is that you can't leave China alone because they are too competitive. Efforts to contain them seem to fall short. Nobody really cares about philosophy since China doesn't export their philosophy. Nobody in the West really knows the Chinese system anyways.

The ambassador says "it's complicated". It's really not. American food producers found a market to sell 20% more of their products in China and ramped up production to meet the new demand. The ambassador now says "we" can"t "afford" to not sell the food to China because of unemployement here. These agribusiness corporations could have simply been satisfied to keep the level of production where it was and ignored the Chinese market. As to the people who would lose their jobs, what were they doing before that? Of course we know who fills these agricultural jobs and they are low wage immigrants brought in to fill the new jobs created.

Capitalism allows the markets to change based on demands of the people and markets that buy the products and services. A free market allows for businesses to easily change markets, and any workers effected by a business change or the business losing money and laying off people can find other employment in other growing business sectors of the economy. Pretty basic economics.

There are reasons why after 6 years of de-coupling, not much has 'moved out' of China to countries like India. For every low to mid end factory India announces and boasts about with great fanfare, foreign companies are still opening 5 to 10 higher value-added ones all over China. For every billion, it's 5B in China.
India has shown themselves to not be a good ally PTO America. There are far, far better choices than China or India.

I recently returned from a holiday break in Guangzhou. Their metro trains are packed at all hours. A foreign bank in China shared the coastal China regions are booming in non-real estate sector. I did see some unemployed folks hiding from the cold in Starbucks and other joints. Like US sub-prime saga, China is now cleaning up the real estate sector. US has delisted some major China companies in Nasdaq while China struggle to kick US companies out. Chinese work long hours on 6 days a week, US work 5 days at regular hours.
