  • Have you got a Tesla UMC (Universal Mobile Connector)? Do you get the full rated 10 amps or 15 amps? If not then this will help reprogram the tails from the typical 8 and 12 amps up to the correct 10 and 15 amps.

Actually better than Tesla guides. Worked on my 2024 model 3.

Thanks Bud yes requires the car be locked and above the current charge limit to do the firmware update. It frustrates me that we need to support each other and not be able to simply find this in Tesla doco.
Thanks So much for your video

Just remember that not all tails can be updated to 10 and 15 amp and some OTA updates actually interfere with it making it impossible to do until corrected

Thanks for the video. However my UMC just automatically updated itself today. First time charging my new 2024 Model 3, I plugged the UMC in and it was limited to 8A max initially, so I just let it charged at 8A. I closed all the car doors and left the car alone, I did not lock the car, shortly afterward the car switched off the central screen and the UMC stopped charging by itself. I then checked the Tesla app on my phone, it now says it can charge up to 10A max, so I just restart the charging again at 10A. I suspect Tesla must have updated the software since you made this video and now the UMC can automatically update from 8A to 10A max.

Thanks Grumpy I believe you may have just solved my problem trying to reprogram my UMC. Ive been trying this method in my garage at home but my vehice is never locked at home. So as soon as I get home from work ill follow this guide with my vehicle locked and hopefully the UMC will update.

On a trip ATM and charged with 10A tail to 100% (overnight) at 8A max It sat connected (fully charged) before we left the next morning. Last night we charged again with the same setup and the app reported 10A - I gad to dial it down slightly because we were on a shared circuit.

Thanks G.O.M. Because the tail plug doesn't come out vertically makes it impossible to plug into caravan park power boxes. A short adaptor cable can be made (0.5M long) to allow charging there.

    • @grumpyoldmanandhisev
      @grumpyoldmanandhisev  Год назад

Agreed. Actually went down to a local caravan park to try it. Managed to get it in but had the devils own job unplugging it! I think anyone staying at caravan parks should take a short extension cable for just that and also a long one for unforseen problems

Thanks for your helpful guide. Like others, I am not having the success you had. Following your procedure and sequence, I get the clunks but no flashing of the T on the UMC. Some questions:
    * Did you leave the UMC plugged into the Tesla for the entirety of the procedure?
    * Was there a particular sequence for plugging the UMC in (Car then mains; Mains then Car)?
    * Did you switch on the mains connection to the UMC before plugging into the Tesla?
    Many thanks

    • @grumpyoldmanandhisev

Yes I did leave the UMC plugged in the whole time.
No - just plug it all in in no particular order
I have since discovered that Tesla have found there is a problem with some cars/UMCs not updating and they are aware of it and it will hopefully be fixed in an update

Sorry but this procedure doesn’t work on my new Model Y. I have tails labelled 10A and 15A. I followed your exact procedure twice, lowered charge limit to well below my SOC, unplugged UMC and locked car. The car is connected to my WiFi. No joy!

Bummer. Have you checked that they are actually rated at the higher amperage? Also ensure the car is NOT drawing any power for any reason ie close all doors and lock it

Yep done all that. Other Comments on this video have confirmed it’s a firmware bug and known to Tesla.

are you "reprogramming" the tail? or have you simply set up the conditions so that the car updates the firmware/config on the UMC?

Awaiting from the mudflaps to come back in at tessories. Also have been given a screen protector, cup holder insert and tray insert for the storage compartments between the front seats
