God the 8 year old in the second story is so precious. He tried so hard… he deserves all the ice cream, and also an entire therapist. When I heard he had tried to feed his sister my heart melted. He’s more mature then their so called “father.” Give him the world~

But to completely neglect your kids, then go on a rampage afterword because your wife told you to get out... the guy's an utter monster and waste of human life. Dude in the last story sounds like a complete sociopath. He's dating someone who's depressed and has nobody else supporting her in her life and just abandons her for his own financial convenience, and then has no guilt about the whole situation, even after she sends him her money and kills herself... that is so heartbreaking, and I hope it's a fake story.

Depression is rough, and I'm not saying he's responsible for her brain chemistry. I'm saying his actions caused an episode that he should have known would happen because he knows she has depression.

Here (Australia) a tenant can change the locks, but they have to provide a copy of the new keys to the owner/managing agent. Not that this is relevant in this case.

It's entirely possible that they just went to a hardware store and just bought new door knobs/dead bolts. They're pretty easy to install and fairly inexpensive.
Usually in the US, you have to prove you at least live at that house. Like, a piece of mail with the address that matches your name, or your ID. But if this guy was a guest, I don't think he would've been getting mail at OP's house, right? But then again, this is stuff from the US, not the UK, so things might be different

It was so terrible that he had to try and take care of his sister, but he tried his best and I think that's a good sign that he'll be a great big brother growing up.
The last update for the last post def felt like a cold slap to the face She had depression, no close family in her country, and just get tricked into thinking everything will work out with OP's help but got the rug pulled in the end. Thats honestly so heartbreaking and i hope OP never finds happiness again. So glad his own friends dont want anything to do with him anymore.

A couple things are extra triggering about the story: * The OP doesn't seem to realise that the issue wasn't necessarily that he didn't want to sponsor his partner, but rather that he offered to, let that process proceed along, and then pulled out when it was way too late to do so and still figure out a solution. Instead, he thinks the issue is that his partner wanted to be dependant on him, and he didn't want that. He never seems to realise that it was entirely how he handled it that was to blame. * When he talks about her depression, he mentions how he helped her "get over it each time" or something like that. That's terrible language that implies that he wasn't seeing it as a serious mental illness, and rather as an obstacle that she just had to "get over". Depression that hadn't been adequately treated (partly because OP didn't give it the respect it deserved), and then getting kicked out of the country after being betrayed by someone who had offered strong commitment to her by offering to be her sponsor - OP is absolutely partly responsible for her death. I hope they realise it, accept their blame, and learn to become a better person as a result.

I hated every one of these stories but thank you for the narrations, i can't believe the sheer selfishness of the last story, he should be in shock and grieving over the person he wanted to spend his life with but instead he's moaning about his friends
He's shallow at best. A sociopath at worst. I've met people like this but never seen such an extreme situation. People who feel like they should be able to act any way they want, take no responsibility for anything ever, and always seem to end up with "are you guys mad at me? I just don't want anyone to be mad at me!" They're the center of the universe and they idiotically think that's good and right and that everyone else is mean for expecting them to care about others. And sure enough, he was shocked about her suicide but his obsession at the last is that his friends are mad at him. Dude, those friendships are over because your friends have some empathy and you don't!
Second story: I really hope she got her son in to seeing someone, so he can talk about his experience. Also glad she got away from him, as that could have gone all kinds of sideways. Atleast he "only" destroyed items in the apartment. I hope she and her kids are getting back on their feet and are being looked after.
She said in the update that she had "Light Bruises" so I can only assume that during his rampage of destroying the apratment either he laid a hand on her she got caught in the crossfire. But seriously, how you sleep with you kids screaming and banging and trying to wake you up? Also, yeah, if OP did feed them that's still 8-10 hours of no food or drink and the baby hadn't even been changed! Glad she got outta there! Also, I agree with ya. Son needs to see someone so he knows it's not his fault that his Dad is no longer there.

The second you read “she sent me a large some of money and then I couldn’t get ahold of her anymore” I knew exactly where that was going. This is one of those exception scenarios. No, you’re not responsible for someone else’s visa or to be the only one getting them through their depression or for them ending their life . . . BUT when you *offer* to be their safety net and claim you love them and want to be with them, and then you pull it all away because you’re having doubts, you bear responsibility. And doing that, giving them hope only to crush all of it, *with the knowledge that they don’t have a support system back home and have a history of depression,* then you are left with the responsibility that you played a part in their declining mental health. That’s what pisses me off so much with that last story. He KNEW she wasn’t close with her family back home. He KNEW she had a history of depression. Yet he still extended and olive branch just to saw it off when she took it! I hope this man never convinces another woman he loves her. EVER. For her sake.
@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 stuff like that is pretty indicative of someone getting their affairs in order, it’s pretty common for this kind of stuff since the thought is usually along the lines of “i’m useless in life but maybe my death can at least be useful”. It’s just one of those warning signs for people with experience dealing with this kind of thing

He knew she had no one back home. He knew she was suffering from depression. He insisted on sponsoring her. The social impact of her death is all he cares about. Complete sociopath. I really hope this brings misery and isolation for him. He brought it on himself and deserves every bit of it.
That last story... Geez. I've had a friend who I lost contact with that I discovered much later had done the same to himself as that girlfriend. I barely spoke to him but I felt entirely responsible for years and years after. The fact that this guy is just trying to brush off the blame and is only focused on how this 'makes him look' is kinda disgusting, ngl. His girlfriend isn't around anymore and all he can think about is himself. She deserved better than him....
Sad thing too is seeing how many people in the comments are defending it. Sure it's not entirely his fault but it was him giving her that hope and then going back on it last minute that was a large contribution to it. So in that regard, he *does* share some of the blame there. I get their point about it being a mix of different factors since she had depression already, but it's dumb that a lot of them are insisting that giving her hope with his promise and then going back on it isn't a shitty thing to do.

It reminded me of my story where I tried my hardest to make it work and my gf still killed herself, this guy never really cared about his gf if he let her get deported, especially After agreeing to support her.

Okay, as someone who used to be suicidal, no one person is ever the reason someone commits suicide. To blame another is just plain wrong. It's a multitude of reasons, making you feel trapped and alone and unable to go forward. Yes, Op may have done things that made it worse but that is how it goes. People make decisions, some good and some bad, that can often hurt another. What someone does with those choices is their own choice. Regardless, Op is an asshole for what he did, but he is not responsible for that girls death. That lies fully on her own shoulders.

The thing that make her feels safe, that help her in time of needs then at the most important moments, he stabs her in the back and when her life fall down hill because of that betrayal, he just said "you are on your own". That no matter how healthy mental health are, is going to leave a wound.

as a suicide survivor, the fact that last guy is even a real person is absolutely fucking horrifying. i agree, you should never blame someone for another person’s suicide, but if you DIRECTLY cause someone’s entire life to fall apart, and they kill themselves because of the stress that puts them under, you need to take responsibility for the role you played in their decision to take their own life. holy shit.

Taking care of children and having an adult partner completely dependant on you are 2 totally different things. Romantic relationships fail all the time. But chances are relationships between parent and child are much stronger.

This isn't some people harmlessly squatting in an abandoned building, what's happening here is nothing less than theft. More than that it's theft of property that likely has a value close to $100,000 on the low end.
I cannot believe the cops in the first story refused to act when the brother literally threatened to kill OP if he used his own property. The third story: the OP literally destroyed her ability to trust her main support system and set into motion events that would physically separate her from him as well. He should not be surprised that he's getting blamed for her succumbing to depression.
The last story, the OP says about her depression "I always managed to help her get over it." This man is out of touch with reality. There is no easy one step get over it. This man deserves the lego pit.
Makes me think he probably was saying things like "maybe you should try being happy or smiling for a change" and she probably stopped talking to him about it and he took that as her "getting over it"
I saw that too. Utterly out of touch, even down to the way he worded it. "Get over it." Depression isn't something one just gets over, especially if it's recurring. If "problems still came up now and again" then chances are she was simply hiding it better, or no longer talking to him about it. That poor girl.
I feel like folks are judging extremely quick on that last story. "Get over it" is a terrible word choice... that could easily be explained by OP not being good at writing, or a native english speaker, and that kind of jumping to conclusions kind of applies to most of the story IMO Don't get me wrong, I think the rug pull was indeed an asshole move, but it feels like it was driven by fear of paranoia, which to lots of people its hard to control, and he tried really hard to fix it. He's not responsible for the girl's death, and it's completely normal of him to be hurt if he's being shunned from his social circle because of it
As someone with drug resistant depression that part made me want to vomit. Depression doesn't just go away, it's a never ending cycle of bad days and okay days, with some good days and VERY bad days mixed in. Oftentimes those bad days are instead bad weeks or even bad months. Yet people will see what SEEMS to be a string of okay or good days and legitimately think the depression just went away. The worse part is the victim blaming, lack of genuine remorse and the inability for him to realize the part he played. He betrayed her, plain and simple, promised to help her stay in the country only to get cold feet at the last second and pull out the rug from under her. He did this knowing she had no one to go to for help in her country, knowing that her only friends and loved ones were there. That is a betrayal and objectively cruel, he even kept her car. He treated her depression like it was just something minor that comes and goes, further showing ignorance and narcissism by refusing to acknowledge that his betrayal and the resulting isolation she faced as a direct result had a negative impact on her. Finally, he literally blamed her not accepting him back as the reason for her depression getting so bad. Even indirectly blaming her rejection and death for why no one wants anything to do with him anymore. This screams narcissism and maybe even emotional abuse and it's sickening.
Not just that. If he knew about her depression it should have been a huge red flag when she wanted to give him the car. Detaching oneself from worldly possesions, radical style changes or otherwise completely unusual behavior can be signs of wanting to draw a line under the current situation and should always be taken seriously.
Last story: the guy thinks he's the victim in the story wth. He deserves to be alienated. Poor girl, no justice for her. I hope she finally found some peace 🙏🏼

@@warrenrhinerson6373 sorry this is long lol, i can understand feeling opposed to people saying he basically "murdered her", but it seems like people are most outraged/shocked/disgusted by his absolute lack of empathy, care for her well-being, and or even basic sadness towards her death. he very obviously sees himself as being treated unfairly, and chooses to make an update focusing on how to make OTHERS like him again rather than focus on things HE could do to improve the situation. he knew how vulnerable she was with isolating mental illness, unstable citizenship, no familial support, no job--he had intimate access to ALL of that knowledge and yet still chose to offer her a solution she was uncomfortable with, reassure her that it would be fine, and then retract the offer right at the end when there wasn't time to find other solutions. after betraying her trust and condemning her to a foreign country with no support system, he then blames HER for not "reaching out", for not trusting him again. even when she displays very prominent warning signs of suicidal tendencies (withdrawing from social circles or public networks, giving away valuables and personal effects), he doesn't do more than send her a message once every couple months??? he has every right to act like a terrible friend, partner, and support system. but he doesn't also get the right to be free from judgment, resentment, or ridicule for those actions. his friends and the internet have every right to flame him or excommunicate him from their circles if they find his actions abhorrent and cruel.

Last story: That was so baffling that I actually thought I missed something there. Like the guy forgot to write some sentences that gave him good reasons to why he is acting the way he does because I couldn't believe that someone could be this cold and clueless unless they were some sort off cartoon villain. And the fact that he thought his relationship with her was still set is even worse. And usually I don't point fingers at people being responsible for someone to commit suicide because usually there are more factors to just one explanation. But in this OP is the direct reason why she killed herself.
In the last story, my stomach dropped when I heard the ex girlfriend had sent the OP a significant sum of money, because I had an awful feeling about where it was going - and sadly, that feeling was right. If someone going through a rough time started distributing their money and/or possessions, that's a huge warning sign that they're planning to do something harmful, and they need help fast. Mental health crises are very serious, and the more people that know the signs, the better. Other things to watch for include a sudden improvement in mood (as the decision to end things and - as they see it - be free of their suffering can take a huge weight off their mind) and efforts to see/talk to everyone they care about in quick succession, especially if it's a sudden change from a tendency to isolate (essentially, trying to say goodbye and/or make amends, setting their affairs in order).
Absolutely. I just turned 15 and I have been dealing with depression sense 12. We really need to start treating mental health and physical health equally.
@@nai5949 I won’t lie to you kiddo and say it gets better, I’m 31 and got diagnosed with depression and PTSD at 18 or 19 (child abuse survivor), and it can be really hard at times, but what I will say is fine yourself a group who you truly trust, one’s you can truly open up to and love you for who you are, they can be close friends irl, close friends online, it could be a local support group or an online support group. I’ve found when my depression goes into a really bad dip it helps having someone I can talk to. I don’t always talk about how I feel mentally, just having someone to talk to so I know I’m not alone in the world, sometimes I just wanna play Minecraft or Among Us with friends because they make me laugh and it massively helps, sometimes just chatting on discord with the bois about random crap, sometimes it’s about mental health, either way, a group of friends who support you and can be your support system is massively important. Hell sometimes we just communicate in memes and that helps. Hope life is treating you well atm
It paints a whole other picture compared to the violence-driven excuses of suicidal tendencies I see and hear so much about in American cultures. They've succeeded to blur the line between suicide and homicide so much that they just label it as the former if the words "suicidal" or "mental illness" is so much as being mentioned, especially when police officers are the ones who are called in to deal with these volatile people and in worst case forced to take their lives. But since suicide is the sensitive topic it has become, and understandably so, I doubt this blatant misinterpretation will ever be straightened out. Some people have made the very questioning of this convenient self-labeling that should somehow excuse the violent and dangerous people's behavior being disrespectful and offensive, basically spitting in the face of where suicide actually stems from. It's because of them that the people who truly suffers will never get their voices heard before it's too late, and it's disheartening.

I've heard horror stories of places in the US with squatter laws that basically give people the right to steal your own house and make you go through legal processes to evict them. Even if they were never an actual tenant. It's nuts.
i think the main idea for such law is to ensure that people don't instantly become homeless or be a street problem for others,and give the person decent amount of time to relocate.however,the problem is that there are people who abuse this and needs massive court and law power to discipline...

No, under UK law, if you allow someone to live with you (long term) they get certain rights. It's like if a landlord in the US let a tenant stay rent-free - they'd still have to follow normal eviction procedures. Although OP couldn't be thrown out of his own house, the police only get involved in criminal matters, rather than civil (in the US, think how far it needs to escalate before a tenant or landlord is arrested, for example).

Even if he could be legally recognised as a tenant, his tenancy would only be for a room as he shares the house with OP. As such he can install/change a lock on his bedroom door, he can't lock OP out of their shared space.
As bad as the last story is, consider this, this is his side of the story. People always lie and make their side of the story sound a bit better than reality, so imagine the awful details that we are missing out on.
He may have pushed her over the edge but, it was not exclusively his fault because she choose to do this. Also, she pushed him away at the end. Yes, the end results are what they are, on both sides but, he is not directly responsible for the choices another adult makes in this situation. However, it was a butt hole move to say what he was going to do and then pulled out at the last minute, that is messed up.

Now you're being deported to your home country where you have no friends, no connection to your family, no job, and are completely alone, and possibly homeless, while still suffering from depression and having no options left. Sometimes, if you spiral deep enough into depression you find yourself in a situation where you feel like you have no choice. Some are able to get help and come out of it, she wasn't. And it was her boyfriend who knowingly put her into that situation when he had the power to save her. He had her life in his hands, and decided he didn't want to be responsible for her when she needed him most. So yes, he was responsible for her death, not her. And this is from someone whose been in that kind of dark place before and survived thanks to friends and family, which she had neither of.
Third story: OP has to be a sociopath or psychopath, the way he doesn't understand how his actions affect others or empathize with the gf, I refuse to believe a normal human being can be so cold

For Story 2, I will say that I'm really glad the son seems like a good brother and a responsible kid for trying to take on those responsibilities despite not knowing how. Right. That son took better care of his sister than their father. Yes he didn’t know how to take care of her because he’s 8 but he tried to feed her because he understood that she was hungry and needed food and when his mother came home he immediately told her what happened because he knew he couldn’t take care of a 6 month old and the baby needed someone who could. That boy is probably going to grow up to be a great brother, possibly dad (unlike his father) and just a great person in general
That last story makes me want to slap op and call him a monster. Literally what responsibilities would you have to sponsor someone’s visa? This vaguely reminds me of a character I have. A young Arab woman who fled her home after being disowned by her father. She was also captured by a radical terrorist group that experimented on her and gave her immortality. After being used as an unalive bomber, which destroyed most of an embassy, she managed to become a refugee in America. If someone did that to her, yeah, she’d try to unalive herself too. Unfortunately for, this is real life, and you can’t survive things like that. Im so damn pissed at that last op.

As the parentified child in my FOO my heart goes out to the 8 year old in the story with the butthole, abusively neglectful father. At the age of 9 I was officially put in charge of my many siblings ranging in age from a toddler to one almost 2 years older than me (the older one was both the golden child and likely to burn the house down or murder us all, really, if put in charge), my new chores included cooking meals, getting them to and from school, helping with homework, etc., etc., etc. So, I can say with certainty that single-digit ages are WAY too young to be put in charge of other siblings' care, or even one's own care, especially so such a long period of time. Three cheers for OP for recognizing that the husband is the problem and taking the steps needed to protect her children. I suspect I would have been saved much heartbreak, much destruction of my emotional and psychological health, much need for therapy if my other parent had been more involved in the care of my parents' children - or, really, if any adult had stepped to say or do ANYTHING about what was going on in that home. Three cheers for OP for protecting her children.

Dude in the last story had a big part in her death, I'm sure. Imagine having no family close to you and the person you trust? You love? Story 2 hits close to home, my best friend just had a baby with a man that’s exactly like that (stay up late, sleep in, miss important events/be late for work as a result) and i’m so scared for her that it’s going to be just like that

Even if that whole thing with him letting her down didn't happen, and you were with someone even just friends and not even a couple and you find out they killed themselves,you think it's your fault. You know it's your fault. The fact that this guy thought that his friends reaction is worse than her death, that the social punishment was worse to him than her dying- yeah you're why she killed herself. You abandoned her utterly and completely and being without family it broke her. I in this situation even if I didnt do something so horrible as pulling a rug from under their feet security wise country wise, if people blamed me I would feel good I am being punished because I deserve it. I was so close. I must be at least partially at fault. This dude was hurt more by her lack of cooking and fucking than her presence. This to me is a horror story literally above Stephen king. I fear abandonment as my family doesn't want me and I also went through a relationship where a guy let me down that deeply. And it's been years so now I feel secure in my judgement that yeah, she killed herself because of him. He was the most important relationship in her life and he just didn't give a fuck. Being confronted with that reality broke her. What an incredible, horrible, tragic loss. And "obviously devastated" dude doesn't realise what he did to her. She was thinking suicide from the moment he changed his mind to her her entire life crumbled, her most important person could have saved her and not only chose to watch her drown, but watched her drown insisting it's his personal right to avoid getting wet even if she is in the process of dying. This is what happened here. The only saving grace? This dude truly has no clue his attachments are more shallow than his personality.

The last story was so scummy at first, but once it was known that she killed herself I legit gasped and paused in shock. I know it's not the same, but I've had friends abroad that I've wished to help so much but I'm just not capable of besides emotional support and always being there to talk, and this specific friend had a very troubled life and I've tried to be there for her, she's extremely dear to me and I still aim to actually help her when I get the money to do so, but until then I always had one core goal: Prevent her from giving up. Her situation was so bad I was actually always afraid she could kill herself, and hearing that this guy here could do what I've wished to do, OFFERED to do what I wish I was able to do (money-wise), and then by his blunder she ended up doing what I've tried to prevent for my best friend... It just sent a deathly chill down my spine. I basically saw all my fears in my own situation made real in that post. I won't give the guy any Asshole score I give him the highest Careless score possible... Just... Good lord...

The guy in the last story is terrible. He saw his girlfriend trying everyday to find a new job to stay in the country, yet he sees him sponsoring her as him taking full responsibility for her. Its not like she was gonna become a full dependent. She seemed to have a good work ethic and wanting to earn her own way where possible. He tells her he is willing to sponsor her, even has to convince her it will all be okay when she says she doesn't wanna put that pressure on him, and rug pulls her by saying "You know what, too much to handle". Then he wants to try to make long distance work and says he sees a future with her. The worst part is he KNEW she didn't have family back in her home country, and was willing to send her back. Then even after the disregard this guy showed her, she sent him her car and what was likely her lifes savings before taking her life. Even when she felt rejected and like she had no options left, she still chose to make sure he was supported. I'm not going to say that he drove her to take her life, or is the sole reason she did, but if he handled the situation better she would likely be alive if she had the proper support. I would have had some empathy for the guy, but after he hears about her death, the person he claimed he wanted a future with, his first concern is "Reddit, how do I make my friends like me again after I abandoned my girlfriend in her time of need?" My advice to him is to move to a new country and start from scratch, cause thats what his girlfriend had to do.

1st story op should fight fire with fire use the brother's own logic and say since he "de facto" abandoned his house that he retook ownership back and now its under his name and that he has every right to defend it, after the brother is a freeman of the land he knows the rules (but honestly I've never even heard or seen them). As a non-American myself who spent three years in the US on a student's visa, the last story really pissed me off. Imagine you live as an immigrant in the United States. You built yourself a life, which is better than the one at home, you have made friends, and you are in a serious relationship which has lasted for five years. And then, one day, you're told that you're going to be kicked out of the country for BS reasons which you had no part in - you are completely innocent, but still totally screwed. And the only thing that can save you from all this nightmare is your boyfriend, your rock you have leaned on for years, and he offers this solution to you, and is willing to help you out... only to chicken out in the last moment and pull the rug off your feet. I can understand why she did what she did. This slug betrayed her so badly that he should be glad I don't know him personally. Poor girl. May she rest in peace. As for this slug... the fact he still doesn't understand how severe the consequences are from his chickening-out makes me mad. He doesn't deserve to have any form of offspring. May his family tree die with him.
First story: there's a whole british show based on these types of situations, where property owners have no help in evicting horrible tenants/squatters. nightmare tenants, slum landlords. it's mind boggling how far it's allowed to go on.

I think that it should be mandatory to prove that you're the homeowner before a locksmith is allowed to change the locks.
sadly,mostly,it's not the case.they get hired and do the job they are paid for.it's just a little(not very high paying) job that don't really need so much validation or whatever.unless that locksmith is a big company locksmith...
It's entirely possible that they just went to a hardware store and just bought new door knobs/dead bolts. They're pretty easy to install and fairly inexpensive.
Usually in the US, you have to prove you at least live at that house. Like, a piece of mail with the address that matches your name, or your ID. But if this guy was a guest, I don't think he would've been getting mail at OP's house, right? But then again, this is stuff from the US, not the UK, so things might be different

the little brother saying he tried to feed his baby sis potato chips after he tried to make a bottle but didnt know how makes my heart melt. the fact an eight year old had to be more responsible and made more of an effort for his sister than his father did makes me so angry those kids are precious and im proud of OP for leaving.
That young brother did such an amazing job of trying to look after his baby sister. He did all he could do and it was so good of him to try.
It was so terrible that he had to try and take care of his sister, but he tried his best and I think that's a good sign that he'll be a great big brother growing up.
The last update for the last post def felt like a cold slap to the face
She had depression, no close family in her country, and just get tricked into thinking everything will work out with OP's help but got the rug pulled in the end. Thats honestly so heartbreaking and i hope OP never finds happiness again. So glad his own friends dont want anything to do with him anymore.

A couple things are extra triggering about the story:
* The OP doesn't seem to realise that the issue wasn't necessarily that he didn't want to sponsor his partner, but rather that he offered to, let that process proceed along, and then pulled out when it was way too late to do so and still figure out a solution. Instead, he thinks the issue is that his partner wanted to be dependant on him, and he didn't want that. He never seems to realise that it was entirely how he handled it that was to blame.
* When he talks about her depression, he mentions how he helped her "get over it each time" or something like that. That's terrible language that implies that he wasn't seeing it as a serious mental illness, and rather as an obstacle that she just had to "get over". Depression that hadn't been adequately treated (partly because OP didn't give it the respect it deserved), and then getting kicked out of the country after being betrayed by someone who had offered strong commitment to her by offering to be her sponsor - OP is absolutely partly responsible for her death. I hope they realise it, accept their blame, and learn to become a better person as a result.

People who feel like they should be able to act any way they want, take no responsibility for anything ever, and always seem to end up with "are you guys mad at me? Second story: I really hope she got her son in to seeing someone, so he can talk about his experience. Also glad she got away from him, as that could have gone all kinds of sideways. She said in the update that she had "Light Bruises" so I can only assume that during his rampage of destroying the apratment either he laid a hand on her she got caught in the crossfire. Also, yeah, if OP did feed them that's still 8-10 hours of no food or drink and the baby hadn't even been changed!

The second you read “she sent me a large some of money and then I couldn’t get ahold of her anymore” I knew exactly where that was going.
This is one of those exception scenarios. No, you’re not responsible for someone else’s visa or to be the only one getting them through their depression or for them ending their life . . . BUT when you *offer* to be their safety net and claim you love them and want to be with them, and then you pull it all away because you’re having doubts, you bear responsibility. And doing that, giving them hope only to crush all of it, *with the knowledge that they don’t have a support system back home and have a history of depression,* then you are left with the responsibility that you played a part in their declining mental health.
That’s what pisses me off so much with that last story. He KNEW she wasn’t close with her family back home. He KNEW she had a history of depression. Yet he still extended and olive branch just to saw it off when she took it! I hope this man never convinces another woman he loves her. EVER. For her sake.

It’s just one of those warning signs for people with experience dealing with this kind of thing

Sad thing too is seeing how many people in the comments are defending it. Okay, as someone who used to be suicidal, no one person is ever the reason someone commits suicide. To blame another is just plain wrong. It's a multitude of reasons, making you feel trapped and alone and unable to go forward. Yes, Op may have done things that made it worse but that is how it goes. People make decisions, some good and some bad, that can often hurt another. What someone does with those choices is their own choice.
Regardless, Op is an asshole for what he did, but he is not responsible for that girls death. That lies fully on her own shoulders.

As someone with drug resistant depression that part made me want to vomit. Depression doesn't just go away, it's a never ending cycle of bad days and okay days, with some good days and VERY bad days mixed in. Oftentimes those bad days are instead bad weeks or even bad months. Yet people will see what SEEMS to be a string of okay or good days and legitimately think the depression just went away.
The worse part is the victim blaming, lack of genuine remorse and the inability for him to realize the part he played.
He betrayed her, plain and simple, promised to help her stay in the country only to get cold feet at the last second and pull out the rug from under her. He did this knowing she had no one to go to for help in her country, knowing that her only friends and loved ones were there. That is a betrayal and objectively cruel, he even kept her car.
He treated her depression like it was just something minor that comes and goes, further showing ignorance and narcissism by refusing to acknowledge that his betrayal and the resulting isolation she faced as a direct result had a negative impact on her. Finally, he literally blamed her not accepting him back as the reason for her depression getting so bad. Even indirectly blaming her rejection and death for why no one wants anything to do with him anymore. This screams narcissism and maybe even emotional abuse and it's sickening.
Not just that. If he knew about her depression it should have been a huge red flag when she wanted to give him the car. Detaching oneself from worldly possesions, radical style changes or otherwise completely unusual behavior can be signs of wanting to draw a line under the current situation and should always be taken seriously.

Like the guy forgot to write some sentences that gave him good reasons to why he is acting the way he does because I couldn't believe that someone could be this cold and clueless unless they were some sort off cartoon villain. And the fact that he thought his relationship with her was still set is even worse. And usually I don't point fingers at people being responsible for someone to commit suicide because usually there are more factors to just one explanation. But in this OP is the direct reason why she killed herself.

In the last story, my stomach dropped when I heard the ex girlfriend had sent the OP a significant sum of money, because I had an awful feeling about where it was going - and sadly, that feeling was right. If someone going through a rough time started distributing their money and/or possessions, that's a huge warning sign that they're planning to do something harmful, and they need help fast.
Mental health crises are very serious, and the more people that know the signs, the better. Other things to watch for include a sudden improvement in mood (as the decision to end things and - as they see it - be free of their suffering can take a huge weight off their mind) and efforts to see/talk to everyone they care about in quick succession, especially if it's a sudden change from a tendency to isolate (essentially, trying to say goodbye and/or make amends, setting their affairs in order).
Absolutely. I just turned 15 and I have been dealing with depression sense 12. We really need to start treating mental health and physical health equally.
@@nai5949 I won’t lie to you kiddo and say it gets better, I’m 31 and got diagnosed with depression and PTSD at 18 or 19 (child abuse survivor), and it can be really hard at times, but what I will say is fine yourself a group who you truly trust, one’s you can truly open up to and love you for who you are, they can be close friends irl, close friends online, it could be a local support group or an online support group. I’ve found when my depression goes into a really bad dip it helps having someone I can talk to. I don’t always talk about how I feel mentally, just having someone to talk to so I know I’m not alone in the world, sometimes I just wanna play Minecraft or Among Us with friends because they make me laugh and it massively helps, sometimes just chatting on discord with the bois about random crap, sometimes it’s about mental health, either way, a group of friends who support you and can be your support system is massively important. Hell sometimes we just communicate in memes and that helps.

It paints a whole other picture compared to the violence-driven excuses of suicidal tendencies I see and hear so much about in American cultures. They've succeeded to blur the line between suicide and homicide so much that they just label it as the former if the words "suicidal" or "mental illness" is so much as being mentioned, especially when police officers are the ones who are called in to deal with these volatile people and in worst case forced to take their lives.
But since suicide is the sensitive topic it has become, and understandably so, I doubt this blatant misinterpretation will ever be straightened out. Some people have made the very questioning of this convenient self-labeling that should somehow excuse the violent and dangerous people's behavior being disrespectful and offensive, basically spitting in the face of where suicide actually stems from. It's because of them that the people who truly suffers will never get their voices heard before it's too late, and it's disheartening.

The saying "Every child deserves a parent. But not every parent deserve a child." has never been any more true, when it comes to that awful excuse of a husband and father.
I feel for that kid, he's going to remember that forever. I was 4 (now 28) when my dad was kicked out, but i remember like it happened yesterday.
I've heard horror stories of places in the US with squatter laws that basically give people the right to steal your own house and make you go through legal processes to evict them. Even if they were never an actual tenant. It's nuts.
My therapist had to deal with that once. It took forever and it was ridiculous.
i think the main idea for such law is to ensure that people don't instantly become homeless or be a street problem for others,and give the person decent amount of time to relocate.however,the problem is that there are people who abuse this and needs massive court and law power to discipline...
Squatter law has to take several years in order to come into effect. The average is about 12 years, but California is the lowest with 5.
The second story is literally so upsetting. I've grown up the oldest of 8 siblings and I could never imagine doing this to my children or siblings. I hope hes in jail
Those cops have to have been looking for an excuse not to take action. The squatter was a guest, not a tenant. If I were their boss, I would have had a stern taking to with them.
No, under UK law, if you allow someone to live with you (long term) they get certain rights.
It's like if a landlord in the US let a tenant stay rent-free - they'd still have to follow normal eviction procedures.
Although OP couldn't be thrown out of his own house, the police only get involved in criminal matters, rather than civil (in the US, think how far it needs to escalate before a tenant or landlord is arrested, for example).

Even if he could be legally recognised as a tenant, his tenancy would only be for a room as he shares the house with OP. As such he can install/change a lock on his bedroom door, he can't lock OP out of their shared space.

As bad as the last story is, consider this, this is his side of the story. People always lie and make their side of the story sound a bit better than reality, so imagine the awful details that we are missing out on.

He was DEFINITELY the reason she committed suicide. He deserves every bad thing that is coming for him.
He may have pushed her over the edge but, it was not exclusively his fault because she choose to do this. Also, she pushed him away at the end. Yes, the end results are what they are, on both sides but, he is not directly responsible for the choices another adult makes in this situation. However, it was a butt hole move to say what he was going to do and then pulled out at the last minute, that is messed up.
After the updates, I think the Butthole score for that guy should be 5/5. Yes, it is your fault, you [long string of insults]
@@josephnorris4095 he neglected to mention in the first part that she didn’t even have family to go back to in her country. Then when she killed herself he brought it up. He didn’t mention it at first because it makes it 100 times worse. It’s absolutely largely his fault.
Worse part her desperation on trying not to go back was a clear indicator that nothing good was waiting for her.

Now you're being deported to your home country where you have no friends, no connection to your family, no job, and are completely alone, and possibly homeless, while still suffering from depression and having no options left. Sometimes, if you spiral deep enough into depression you find yourself in a situation where you feel like you have no choice. Some are able to get help and come out of it, she wasn't. And it was her boyfriend who knowingly put her into that situation when he had the power to save her. He had her life in his hands, and decided he didn't want to be responsible for her when she needed him most. So yes, he was responsible for her death, not her. And this is from someone whose been in that kind of dark place before and survived thanks to friends and family, which she had neither of.
Third story: OP has to be a sociopath or psychopath, the way he doesn't understand how his actions affect others or empathize with the gf, I refuse to believe a normal human being can be so cold

For Story 2, I will say that I'm really glad the son seems like a good brother and a responsible kid for trying to take on those responsibilities despite not knowing how. That being said though, he shouldn't have to be forced into that worry due to his dad neglecting both his kids. I hope the kids and OP are doing ok now.

Right. That son took better care of his sister than their father. Yes he didn’t know how to take care of her because he’s 8 but he tried to feed her because he understood that she was hungry and needed food and when his mother came home he immediately told her what happened because he knew he couldn’t take care of a 6 month old and the baby needed someone who could. That boy is probably going to grow up to be a great brother, possibly dad (unlike his father) and just a great person in general

This vaguely reminds me of a character I have. A young Arab woman who fled her home after being disowned by her father. She was also captured by a radical terrorist group that experimented on her and gave her immortality. After being used as an unalive bomber, which destroyed most of an embassy, she managed to become a refugee in America. If someone did that to her, yeah, she’d try to unalive herself too. Unfortunately for, this is real life, and you can’t survive things like that. Im so damn pissed at that last op.

As the parentified child in my FOO my heart goes out to the 8 year old in the story with the butthole, abusively neglectful father.
At the age of 9 I was officially put in charge of my many siblings ranging in age from a toddler to one almost 2 years older than me (the older one was both the golden child and likely to burn the house down or murder us all, really, if put in charge), my new chores included cooking meals, getting them to and from school, helping with homework, etc., etc., etc. So, I can say with certainty that single-digit ages are WAY too young to be put in charge of other siblings' care, or even one's own care, especially so such a long period of time.
Three cheers for OP for recognizing that the husband is the problem and taking the steps needed to protect her children.
I suspect I would have been saved much heartbreak, much destruction of my emotional and psychological health, much need for therapy if my other parent had been more involved in the care of my parents' children - or, really, if any adult had stepped to say or do ANYTHING about what was going on in that home.

Dude in the last story had a big part in her death, I'm sure. Imagine having no family close to you and the person you trust? You love? Damn. I did not expect that last story to end so tragically. The dude is a selfish, spineless coward and I hope he gets no protection from the flak he so very well deserves.
Even if that whole thing with him letting her down didn't happen, and you were with someone even just friends and not even a couple and you find out they killed themselves,you think it's your fault. You know it's your fault. The fact that this guy thought that his friends reaction is worse than her death, that the social punishment was worse to him than her dying- yeah you're why she killed herself. You abandoned her utterly and completely and being without family it broke her. I in this situation even if I didnt do something so horrible as pulling a rug from under their feet security wise country wise, if people blamed me I would feel good I am being punished because I deserve it. I was so close. I must be at least partially at fault. This dude was hurt more by her lack of cooking and fucking than her presence. This to me is a horror story literally above Stephen king. I fear abandonment as my family doesn't want me and I also went through a relationship where a guy let me down that deeply. And it's been years so now I feel secure in my judgement that yeah, she killed herself because of him. He was the most important relationship in her life and he just didn't give a fuck. Being confronted with that reality broke her. What an incredible, horrible, tragic loss. And "obviously devastated" dude doesn't realise what he did to her. She was thinking suicide from the moment he changed his mind to her her entire life crumbled, her most important person could have saved her and not only chose to watch her drown, but watched her drown insisting it's his personal right to avoid getting wet even if she is in the process of dying. This is what happened here. The only saving grace? This dude truly has no clue his attachments are more shallow than his personality.

The last story was so scummy at first, but once it was known that she killed herself I legit gasped and paused in shock.
I know it's not the same, but I've had friends abroad that I've wished to help so much but I'm just not capable of besides emotional support and always being there to talk, and this specific friend had a very troubled life and I've tried to be there for her, she's extremely dear to me and I still aim to actually help her when I get the money to do so, but until then I always had one core goal: Prevent her from giving up. Her situation was so bad I was actually always afraid she could kill herself, and hearing that this guy here could do what I've wished to do, OFFERED to do what I wish I was able to do (money-wise), and then by his blunder she ended up doing what I've tried to prevent for my best friend... It just sent a deathly chill down my spine. I basically saw all my fears in my own situation made real in that post.

The guy in the last story is terrible. He saw his girlfriend trying everyday to find a new job to stay in the country, yet he sees him sponsoring her as him taking full responsibility for her. Its not like she was gonna become a full dependent. She seemed to have a good work ethic and wanting to earn her own way where possible. He tells her he is willing to sponsor her, even has to convince her it will all be okay when she says she doesn't wanna put that pressure on him, and rug pulls her by saying "You know what, too much to handle". Then he wants to try to make long distance work and says he sees a future with her.
The worst part is he KNEW she didn't have family back in her home country, and was willing to send her back. Then even after the disregard this guy showed her, she sent him her car and what was likely her lifes savings before taking her life. Even when she felt rejected and like she had no options left, she still chose to make sure he was supported.
I'm not going to say that he drove her to take her life, or is the sole reason she did, but if he handled the situation better she would likely be alive if she had the proper support. I would have had some empathy for the guy, but after he hears about her death, the person he claimed he wanted a future with, his first concern is "Reddit, how do I make my friends like me again after I abandoned my girlfriend in her time of need?" My advice to him is to move to a new country and start from scratch, cause thats what his girlfriend had to do.
"I thought you fed them before you left" As if a 6 MONTH OLD BABY and child can self sustain themselves without adult supervision.

Dabney, I was getting anxiety right along with you when reading about the idiot who locked himself in the bedroom and neglected his 8-year old and 6 month old for ten hours. That made me cry. So many horrible things could have happened while that a-hole slept; that literally nauseated me. I hope OP gets full custody, and her ex is denied visitation (but is hit with the max amount of child support to be paid)
Last story: He is a narcissistic d-head! He loved all the benefits of having her live with him, but he wanted none of the responsibilities. The whole story was "Me. Me. Me." Her death may not have been his fault directly, but he is responsible nonetheless.

1st story op should fight fire with fire use the brother's own logic and say since he "de facto" abandoned his house that he retook ownership back and now its under his name and that he has every right to defend it, after the brother is a freeman of the land he knows the rules (but honestly I've never even heard or seen them). And yes Rslash here in the UK police can be this useless but mostly in parts of London in my experience
As a non-American myself who spent three years in the US on a student's visa, the last story really pissed me off.
Imagine you live as an immigrant in the United States. You built yourself a life, which is better than the one at home, you have made friends, and you are in a serious relationship which has lasted for five years.
And then, one day, you're told that you're going to be kicked out of the country for BS reasons which you had no part in - you are completely innocent, but still totally screwed.
And the only thing that can save you from all this nightmare is your boyfriend, your rock you have leaned on for years, and he offers this solution to you, and is willing to help you out... only to chicken out in the last moment and pull the rug off your feet.
I can understand why she did what she did. This slug betrayed her so badly that he should be glad I don't know him personally.
