- The Outwaters is a new found footage horror film that has been generating some of the most buzz this subgenre has seen since The Blair Witch Project. Can it possibly live up to the hype as one of the greatest if not scariest found footage films ever made… or does this film, like its tagline, die in the dark. Here's my video review. Have you seen The Outwaters? Let me know in the comments below!

Have you seen The Outwaters? Let me know!
I thought it was brilliant
One of the worst films I have ever seen.
This film could potentially be the worst film out this year.
I would tell everyone, not to waste their time with this movie.
I remain clueless till the end of the movie, can someone explain the movie
still processing this movie, I am going to rewatch forever lol
Yeah, I thought it was up there blair witch, maybe even better
To put this film in a nutshell, 50 minutes of complete and utter boredom followed by 40 minutes of 'WTF is going on because I can't see shit'
Put that on the poster!
Yes I liked it a lot. Why? Yes. It frustrated me but the lasting effect has left an impression on me. The screaming sounds. The last shot. Pure nightmare fuel. This was to me the perfect marriage of analog and found footage genres
The next big thing is going to be analog horror imo. It sounds like The Backrooms is being picked up by a major production studio. I’m too hyped for it.
For experimental horror, it does not get better than this.
I also loved the Creep movies! I think about the first one whenever I see a cabin. Great transition from scull to face at the end.
My life has improved drastically since I turned on "All Notifications" for your Tweets. I thought I'd subscribed to your YT long ago, but no. That has been fixed.
Keep it up, your content is great!
Oh my god can you get more cringe.
Always looking for new interesting horror movies thanks for the video(:!
Thanks for watching. Let me know if you end up seeing this one!
Cineflect: "a world of darkness that no human was ever meant to see..."
Me: 🤩🍿"Go on..."
I respect the filmmaker for the effort but it wasn’t for me. Even thematically it didn’t resonate or even really disturb me. Maybe it’s because of the runtime and I started to get bored, but I appreciated the conversation it generated within my circle, on Letterboxd, and now this video!
It sounds like we're in the same boat on this one, Aimée.
As above and so below as well as grave encounters are 2 of my favorite found footage horror films there are some pretty good found footage films this one looks like it might be just as good
Hard to find a better found footage movie than "Noroi". Original "REC" is a close second.
bro I had such high hopes and when I watched I was pissed I wasted 2 hrs on it. Its just a bunch of shit ideas thrown on film for 2 hours. You can't tell anything youre watching
Just to answer that age-old question: people would keep filming because... people DO keep filming. We know this now, surely? We have so many examples of people filming when it's arguably not a good idea; or in situations where it's dangerous to keep doing so. And in a situation where you might be about to die? That's the last time that you'd going to decide to *stop* filming. I'd understand people finding it unrealistic back when cameras were really cumbersome, but not anymore.
Great explanation. Too many real life examples of people filming something in questionable situations for it to be taboo in a film at this point.
My favorite found footage film is 2010's "Trollhunter" from Norway.
Great pick! I love TROLLHUNTER as well.
The last radio call is f'ing awesome to
Main thought from the clips you've shown is found footage with high quality cameras just doesn't work very well. It's too clear and too pretty, and you don't get the ambiguity that you get with grainy footage. Movies like Lake Mungo, Butterfly Kisses and The Poughkeepsie Tapes do a great job of involving grainier footage in documentary framing devices, so you're not just staring at visual noise for 90 minutes... or you can always ditch the pretence of found footage and go with the aesthetic, like Skinamarink did.
Good point, Steve. That’s undoubtably why they chose to shroud so much of the second half in darkness.
Can't wait to watch this one.
Didnt like it at all. You can be more creative with having no money for effects, than just showing a tiny circle of light shaking across lots of fake blood
Agreed. Case in point, SKINAMARINK.
I am thankful for you to make this video bcz noway in hell i am watching this movie . I can't watch horror movie. It make my tummy weird
Haha, happy to help!
I also have been waiting since I've seen it for more RUclipsrs to see this movie. Thanks for posting ur thoughts.
This was such a fucking mental trip watched it 3 times to fully understand what was going on. Truely Iconic!!❤
The Kool-Aid man tho 😂
I honestly underestimated this film going in. Though the build up was slow, the third act left a very lasting impression and hits you with almost that hereditary effect in the sense that unless you were paying close attention to the clues, you have no idea whats going on until its too late.
I’m not a fan of the “watching things through a straw approach” however it did enhance the horror and the mystery. I just wish there was a better balance of what we could see vs what we can’t. It felt like most of the horror came from what you could hear and the glimpses of gore throughout the darkness.
What a nice family film can’t wait till I show my family this 👍
Let me know what they think! 😜
As an avid watcher of all things horror, this film was one of my favorites I have seen in a long time. Yeah, it kind of dragged on in the beginning, I think it was kind of necessary and it does "reward" patience. I think the reason why they started acting illogically is because some started changing in them fundamentally after that first day and it might be possible the changes happened as soon as they entered that specific section of the desert (hence the sign Robbie finds later in the film). Do I think it good enough to be considered one of the best things in found footage in a while? Not quite. Did I think it was an amazing example of cosmic horror (which is usually hard to translate into film) and a blast to watch, absolutely. In all honesty, I think it will affect people very differently and I also believe that the film is going to be very decisive. In the end, I was not disappointed in the slightest, as it was the first thing I have seen in a long time that legitimately scared the hell out of me.
Are u getting paid to say that?
@@bobos69 Wish I was, but no. I am just a HUGE horror buff who likes to see what other people think of horror movies and give my opinion. In all honesty, I don't think this film is for everybody, but I loved it. Been a long time since a horror movie stuck with me like it. lol
@@dustinjolly9769 it wasnt a horror movie at all though but opinion accepted :P
@@bobos69why because someone else has a different opinion to you, I also loved it
I loved it too, scariest movie I've seen in a long time. Amazing the scariest movie I've ever seen only cost $15,000 to make.
The characters were awful. The hippy girl singing that embarrassing lullaby. Then the plot just becomes incomprehensible and ends with someone cutting their dick off. Which did make me burst out laughing in the theater.
I wish “found footage” films would just turn into first person perspective films. It would make more since then a terrified person or possessed person holding onto a fuckin camera the whole time.
Great point. We need less Blair Witch knockoffs and more Hardcore Henry aspirations. I think The Outwaters would've definitely benefitted from that approach.
@@cineflect
HARDCORE HENRY. That’s the title I couldn’t think of. Is it worth a watch? I really hope other movies start to do this. VHS 2 had a cool segment with that guy that had the “Eye Camera” which I thought was a PERFECT way to switch it up.
Gonna have to give this a watch.
It’s a must-see for found footage fans!
I'm in the UK, hope it comes here soon 💜
I hope so too. Let me know if you get a chance to see it!
@@cineflectopens today in the UK 😊... I saw it a few weeks ago, I liked it.
Where can I watch this ? I will definitely check it out !
It’s currently playing in select theaters. Comes to ScreamBox at a later date.
Terrence Malick + Blair Witch? SOLD!
A match made in heaven (or hell?).
seen it and was pretty disappointed, what a mess that film was. It had some creative elements and scary sound effects but thats already it. The movie just wasnt creepy since you just dont see anything or know whats happening. In many other found footage movies, like Troll Hunter, paranormal activity, as above so below etc. you can at least see whats happening. Felt more like it was a fever dream simulator in the desert. Especially the night scenes sucked. Maybe that type of movie just isnt for me.
were can i watch the outwaters at
Better than "Skinamarink". If I wanted to watch a wall for hours I got plenty around me.
I actually prefer SKINAMARINK, but this is hilarious 🤣
Skinamarink reminded me of a 1:40 minute version of a Tool video.
Looks promising
They demanded a lot from the audience. If they could have just given us a little bit more story and a little bit less flashlight and all the pretty little horses. Good film, scary, better than most, hope to see more from them.
Never rated Blair Witch Project, let’s hope this one is a lot better.
Never rated?
It was a letdown more than anything. It almost felt like they were plugging their music more than anything. I love the found sub-footage genre but as anyone knows, the movies tend to be hit or miss. This was definitely a MISS.
Such an AWESOME friggin’ film… absolutely LOVED the practical creature FX
I´m thinking Cannibal Holocaust but in the desert
The word jerky comes to mind.
I think time will be kind to The Outwaters.
I suspect you're right.
Haven't, but I trust ur opinion. I'll check it out and be back
Let me know when you do!
How can I watch it? I searched all the torrent sites and can't find it anywhere
You can skip the first half of this movie and its the same experience. The whole feeling of this movie is "what kinda weird cosmic monster shit is happening" and then it ends. Its definitely unique as far as found footage films go but I dont see the charm.
yes i liked it.but im not sure what happens.
Found this fucking terrifying
Happy to hear it!
Me 2! It actually still “haunts me !
I saw this in theaters and when it was over, my audience was unanimously pissed off. I thought it was a total waste of time. Like staring at paint dry for 2 hours. Very generic, boring found footage
I agree... it was terrible and very WTF
7:38 Robbie said in an interview that those will be on the BluRay later (which I will definitely get).
For "The Outwaters": Since I saw it last week for the first time, I've re-watched it two times already. Yes, that's how much respect I have for this movie. In other words: I thought it was incredible and I'm now a fan! To me it's the best and most interesting experience since Blair Witch Project. My rating: 8.5/10 (with 10 being Jurassic Park btw, bc nothing tops Jurassic Park 😜 )
Yep. I gave it a 9. Scariest movie I've seen in a long time. Hoping it gets a sequel or other similar films
The Lake of Fire is much worse - 20,000 degrees and not a drop of water for all ETERNITY - urgently read John 3:36.
I couldn’t believe it was 2 hours long, not bad tho 👌🏻
Yeah, 70-90 minutes is the sweet spot for the subgenre if you ask me...
@@cineflect fur sure. I’m watching lake mungo next. Heard it’s great.
I heard on the mirror website that this movie it making people throw up I dunno if this true or not
I wouldn't be surprised. I actually threw up the first time I watch THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT 🤢
This is certainly one of THE WORST FF Horror movies I ever saw. Pretty disturbing for sure, but not scary or interesting. Build-up (SD Cards 1&2) was actually pretty decent and I enjoyed it tho. I liked the mystery and investigation (axe, "thunders", recording sounds from snake holes), and the idea of shooting music video. Also loved the donkeys and singing/dancing in the middle of the desert. On the other hand the horror part was crap. At some point characters got possesed (?) by alien-snake parasites (?) and run around the desert covered in blood. Also stuff happens. A lot of stuff which don't work that well in FF when you have no idea what's going on. It was more like watching "As Above So Below" than a "Blair Witch Project". But without any context. Through a straw... 3/10 at best. Decent build up, so so characters, some interesting ideas, and boring, plotless chaotic horror part. Overall I would put this movie on bottom tier with "V/H/S Viral" and "Unfriended". Worse than "Megan is Missing" or "Grave Enounters 2". I literally enjoyed and understood more from V/H/S 2 "Safe Haven" which I watched without subtitles/dubbing (I didn't understand a word in Indonesian).
Woah @boomber I dont agree with everything you say cause well, I left the movie at least curious like wtf did I watch, I need some reviews to see if my thought is what other peoples thoughts were but i still wouldnt go over 5/10. But yo! that description of a found footage for as above so below with no context is EXACTLY THIS FREAKING MOVIE!!!!! that the best description ive found from my 2 days of digging on this movie. Now back to not thinking about this crap any more
Outwaters is unbearable trash! It's for weak minded, weak hearted people who never seen a horror movie before. If you're: scared of the dark, find people covered in blood scary, cannot get use to unnecessary screams, then this movie is perfect for you because that's all you're watching! There're these bloody tentacle monsters, but they're completely harmless! They just slide pass you, and if they do wrap around you, they don't hurt; plus, they leave shortly after. Infact, nobody in the movie ever gets hurt except for robbie who decides to cut himself up at the end. Other than that, their heads are found on sticks at the end for nothing. The water contributes nothing. I watched this entire movie desperately looking for some kind of story only to be left empty handed. There's nothing about the desert, there's nothing about the characters, and there's nothing about the useless oversized worms. Anybody can remake this movie in their backyard with just a camera and fake blood. Hell, they can add it to the sequels. The actors literally speaks the audience mind in the movie, no purpose behind them talking at all. You tricked me into wasting 2 hours of my time.
Definitely very scary but also frustratingly stingy with details and at times the visuals.
LOL NO, is not even good, like Skinamarink is a good concept poorly executed
This movie sucked
🗑️ absolutely 🗑️!!!
🤣this movie was a bore fest
Blair witch project sucked........
It is trash and cringe, you are just full of crap if you think this movie is any good. The trailer shown the only interesting stuff in the movie and that's was trash 😂😂😂
what a trash movie
Scariest found footage is The Fear Footage 🫣
I’ve seen it, I beg to differ
