I hate to say it, but the City Builder category is over saturated. There are just too many good options out there and I haven't even finished up with the games I bought in the last two years.
@@Jar4Jack"Kingdoms & Castles" or "Tropico 6" would be great for a city builder newbie. Tropico is more complex but is still easy to pick up. There are great in-game tutorials.
@@orbitalpotato Wondering if you've checked out Timberborn yet. It says it's still in alpha, but feels very polished and very fun. Don't know if it's technically a 'city' builder but many of the same concepts are there. Curious about your thoughts.
Thank you for mentioning Lixtoco! Really appreciate it. Hoping to get a demo together sometime next year, as long as real life doesn't get in the way too much xD
Tiny Glade... I want it so bad. I need that relaxing game I can play over my coffee in the morning before work. This will be the one I obsess over when I need to introvert. Please please finish soon! ♥
Workers and Resources - definitely the best and most in depth city builder on Steam. 😀 And one of the very, very few that hasn't bent to include war and combat in a genre that used to be great for those of us who don't want combat. Sadly another genre for us is almost lost. City builders are now almost always combat games...sad... For those of us who want in depth and challenging games, but not combat, this is basically the only decent game on Steam...😢
Against the Storm doesn't have combat either, instead there are crises that threaten the happiness of your citizens, which is an amazing way to include drama without having to do things like troop movement or building defenses.
@@adamjohanssonn It will? Excellent! I really like that game (other than the combat), and I investigated it for that but found nothing that mentioned a peaceful mode. Thanks! If it gets a peaceful mode, that's a definite buy. 😀
Orc Warchief, El Dorado, Pagan Age, Mythos, City of Robots, Viking City Builder, etc, etc All those you showed, are pre-rendered trailers that show at BEST only an idea for a game. Things like that, that fake so much to show ideas, they could very well be scams. Heck, I'm pretty certain I've seen a few of those as scam mobile ads before. Try to be careful, you wouldn't want to promote things that could very well be a scam.
Oxygen Not Included came out with a new DLC that is dropping like in a week if it hasn't already. I don't know what you would categorize that game as but its def a colony builder type of game.
You could Add Songs of syx. Its a nearly 10/10 game in steam early access with a very supportive community, im addicted to it, and its getting released in few months from now. The game is literally developed by one person since 9 years.
There is an awesome one coming in 2024 you haven't mentioned: Roman City Builder called PAX AUGUSTA. It is being made by one man alone and is very accurate to history.
Fata Deum is basically just Black and White. Like to a T. Even looks a bit similar, minus the actual graphic quality, considering Black and White came out in 2001 or something
Great list, got a couple more to add to my list (have many on there already thx to you and others) I have Soviet Republic - very good, very granular. For those who like detail and step stage building you want this one
Looking forward to Banner Lord and Frostpunk. Microvivilizations is a weird one, but I like it. One I think might be missing is These Doomed Isles. I had a fun time with it
I just found my dream game I've been looking for for years, the one I always wondered "why did no one ever thought of that before?", so as usual, you're the best channel for bankrupting me!
I hope kaiserpunk turns out to be a good game. Especially with the time period its set in, the ww1 setting is nice and if they decided to do a ww2 setting that also would have been nice.
good video! links in description are broken (starting from Hollywood Animal it leads to different games) also looking forward to STEAMWORLD BUILD - you missed that one ;)
I have to ask, how do you have time to play all these games and demos and have a meaningful experience in them? I'm sure you have other stuff, along with making these videos, going on. I ask because I'm retired and little else to do but game and I don't have what seems to be the fraction of the time to play as many games as you. My hat is off to you Sir Potato.
Firstly, congrats on retirement! I also have a good ol regular job on the side, but I would say I know very precisely what I'm interested in playing. The cycle is quite easy to close if it's just a small subset of games that I play. Eg: I make a video listing the best one, I do the research, follow the devs on twitter, follow on steam etc. I follow progress and demo builds etc, so when it comes out, I can judge with a varying degree of confidence whether it'll be a good fit for the channel. Not every game I play makes it on, but as I work towards algorithm enlitenment, I get a better sense for what people are interested in & what will work well to show to this little corner of the internet that I've helped cultivate! Hope that answers at least part of the question, all the best!
its 2024 and still Commander Keen has better graphics then most games being called good. indie style, is it? or is it to cheap to make them look better. 2024 we should be maxing out 16gb video cards but i still run most on my rx 270 2gb video card lmfao vertical kingdoms looks like a game we use to play in school on paper.
This video needs more videos, these games are amazing and more gamers should learn of these and support them with wishlists and buying in the future. Thank you Potato!
Too many interesting games probably too little time. New Cycle 👀👀👀👀👀👀 I am really looking forward to frostpunk 2, I was not very good at frostpunk but I managed to make it through every scenario and got all achievements except the survival and hard mode ones. Manor Lords looks interesting because of the focus on historical accuracy but I usually don’t really like games with battle and defence mechanics. Earth of oryn and humanica look really interesting. Synergy, celestial empire and folk lands look really pretty. United penguin kingdom reminds me of the timberborn, definitely interested even with the battle mechanics. Post apo builder looks good it reminds me vaguely of floodlands. Lixtoco and moons of Arden look cute. The settleings I need it. I loved lemmings when I was a kid! Micro civilisation is the attention demanding version of cookie clicker. 😂 Workers and resources of Soviet republic I think I will check out. Bulwark looks interesting but I don’t like battle. Still might look at it. King of the dwarves has dwarves and battles.. 1 good 1 bad.. might look at it to see how much the battles are. Thrive and Viking city builder look interesting but I think I need to see a bit more. I get extremely nauseous with anything that’s deep under water or even reminds me of that so I will have to sit abyssals and beyond these stars out.
Wait until you find out that atlantis was in fact real and that New Atlantis will be built from the ashes of our current slave-matrix society. Give it a few more years and you will realize that what was written here was predicting the most epic paradigmshift ever.
still no total war 3!!!!!!!!!! like with an actual development of the game. more in depth city. more army. more politics. more economy etc. would be gam of the decade if they gave it the love it needs. it would save creative assembly.
Appreciate the list but this feels like thirteen in a dozen. Shows how stagnated this genre is. Too little invention & freshness. 90% of these games will not go beyond nice try & forgettable. One that is doing something new by escaping the grid and is shaping up to become really good and ambitious is Foundation.
Thank you so much for the mentioning my game Roman Triumph :) As a developer and university student, your support means a lot!
I hate to say it, but the City Builder category is over saturated. There are just too many good options out there and I haven't even finished up with the games I bought in the last two years.
this sounds to me, like you need to play more games ;)
Well just remember there’s going to be a drought of them too when popularity wanes, so store em up in the pantry and be ready to ration them lol
Top 5 suggestions for a newbie?

Cities skyline 2 is the quentessential city builder, lets hope it is going to leave early access soon. 2024 seems to bring a lot of competition.
hilariously, it's not officially in EA, that''s what makes it even worse

I am most excited about Nova Roma & Celestial Empire. 👍
Unless it's been pushed back, Endzone 2, the sequel to my personal favorite city-builder, is scheduled for Spring '24.

Thank you champ for including The Settlings! It is a big pleasure to be on your list. Have a great weekned

I’ve really missed PAX AUGUSTA in this lineup though!

Celestial Empire is literally Chinese Anno (1500?) Not that I'm mad at that, I enjoyed Anno 1800 a whole lot, and CE is a very Beautiful looking game.
There's a few kinks to work out, but it defo has promise
Amazing video and effort! Great list man
yea i agree with Kaiserpunk.... sounds very cool! put it on my wishlist thanks for making these upcoming lists!
Builders of Greece is really going to be finalised? It is one of "those" games from PlayWay - it might never be finished actually.
lot interesting games nova roma, kaiserpunk.metropolis 1998,mikroscale, citiesksyliens and sovier
Are there any actually good long city building management games on PS5 or Switch?
Cool, THANKS!
Celestial Empire looks like the one for me.
Check out Knights Province too
