@@lincolnmaceachern2410 - this is one of my most favourite songs, and I was looking forward to listening to this version, but was surprised that she only sang a portion of it. It would have been lovely to have heard the entire song as Paul Simon wrote it. I don't see that anyone else commented about it!
It is an incredibly rare gift for a singer to take a song we've heard sung by so many others for so many years, and sing it as if we'd never heard it before--to take those same words and music and reach down inside of us and touch our very souls. Eva Cassidy did that with this and so many other songs. She was incredibly rare; her talent a gift from God.
So grateful that Love, Actually introduced me to Eva. I'm only sorry she'd already passed. The soulfulness of her singing is so sweetly poignant, it always moves me to tears.
Talk about a small world...Eva grew up around Oxon Hill and Camp Springs, Md. She was 7 years younger than me, but I too grew up in those areas. She worked in a plant nursery just down the street from where my parents lived and where I hung out in a club called Machelle's on the same street as the nursery. I was well into my 20's by then, so she may have been spending time in some of the places I frequented, although she seemed to be somewhat reserved. I've racked my brain over the years trying to recall if I'd ever seen that beautiful face. I didn't realize all this when I first heard 'Over the Rainbow' and instantly became addicted to her music. Her beautiful covers of 'Autumn Leaves' and 'Fields of Gold' were spellbinding. I later discovered that Chuck Brown...the DC GoGo King, had talked her into appearing at Blues Alley and her appearance was recorded. If I'm not mistaken, Chuck Brown frequently played at the Knights of Columbus Hall on the border of S.E. Washington DC and PG County Md. My Father worked there and I worked there on weekends clearing and setting up tables for breakfast. What a talent she was! All of the rehashed junk that's in the theatres these days...it just boggles the mind that her story has not been highlighted. She's the first person I want to meet when I exit this life!
This is the main reason I watch RUclips. I am introduced to great music I may otherwise have never come across. Nice guitar playing. Paul would be proud.
I'm amazed at her ability to control her vibrato. On, off, then on again. Always appropriate, always effortless, in both projected and fading phrasing. Unbelievable singer. Amazing guitarist.
Entièrement d'accord avec le contrôle. C'est ce qui frappe à l'écoute. Personnellement je pense plus à un contrôle de la respiration, du diaphragme et une place vocale bien située car justement je n'entends pas de fluctuation au niveau du vibrato.
I lost my dad last year in April from Cancer and it’s still very fresh in my mind. This song reminds me of his last days and I was blessed to see him take his last Breath
