    Picture it…Connecticut…1986
As newlyweds, this was one of a handful of songs my husband would sing me to sleep with when I had a bad headache. Sometimes I swear he’d sing an hour.
He died last month. Now it all
    Qcomes flooding back.

I remember 1968, staying up late into the night learning to play this on my little Sears guitar for the Jr. High school talent show. Now 53 years later I'll play along the best my old fingers can, and savor those memories with a cup of pre-dawn tea. My all time favorite of yours. It's rhythmic beauty is timeless. Thank you.

I think Paul's early songs were in many ways his best, the haunting incisiveness of the lyrics, the sincerity of his singing and the atmospheric acoustic guitar work. As most people know, this song was inspired by his English girlfriend of his time spent touring England in the mid-60's and is one of my favourite Paul Simon songs. Sadly, Kathy Chitty passed away a few years ago but she is immortalised in this beautiful and moving example of Paul's incomparable genius.

No love song, absolutely NO love song moves my heart as much as this one! ...
The melody, the feeling in the voice, the guitar which sounds like rain drops and the lyrics are simply magical! ...
"So, you see I have come to doubt, all that I once held as true. I stand alone without believes, the only truth I know is you."
Those particular words I think are my favourite lyrics ever written...
THe first time I heard this precious song was in Stockholm 2004, when I heard it live. That song really helped me, since I was going through a lot of emotional healing at the time.
Thank you, Paul Simon for a musical pearl!!

You've put your finger right on it, Suzanne. I've been immersed in contemporary music for the last 64 years and watched with dismay as the quality and originality has gradually deteriorated and we're now left with a desert of mediocrity (with the very occasional small oasis, if you know where to look.) I was lucky enough to see Simon and Garfunkel in concert at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester (UK) in April 1968 and their performance was sheer unmitigated magic. I know it's an old cliche, but we'll never see their like again. Luckily, we can still enjoy the albums - both as a duo and Paul's solo work - and I never tire of listening to them all these years later.

      YES.
My life has been affected by this man's music. Since I was 8 or 9, and he was a big fan of my father!
The first song on the first Simon & Garfunkle album ( Wed Morning) is one of my Dad's songs.
And yes, my Dad's music has been part of my life.
But nowhere as much as Paul Simon. I would love to talk to him. His songs are so intimate, or deep, or vulnerable, or prayerful, or playful. He has been a great friend to me through his music.
No one is more diverse! Joan Armatrading comes close....
      Love you Paul!
For so many years. And through lots tears.

But then I thought of how deep his music is…how he is an INFP and 4 w 5…and realized, he already knows.
He knows more than we could ever tell him with our words, what his music means to us. We can rest easy knowing he understands before we speak, all we wish we could express to him.

I fell in love with & was enthralled with S&G music from the very first time I heard a song by them being sung by a senior in college in the late 60s. In Delhi. It was - The Dangling Conversation..
Getting records in India was so difficult, those days, as almost nothing they produced had reached or caught our youth generation here in India.. then. Then they caught on like wildfire..
But EMI brought out their The Sounds Of Silence album, that I saved up for & bought. Then came across one of their first albums ever - Wednesday Morning at 3 am... written mostly During their England sojourn, period..Kathy being the name of the girl Paul was very much in love with, in London . Found It either in the University Ford Foundation library, or the USIS in Delhi.
Bookends followed, since we were a close knit group of S&G lovers, who shared music - taught each other & learned to pick, finger plucking style, the guitar, played in the folk style that performers & singers used to play in the 60s & 70s. Esp Paul Simon's ... versions
The movie The Graduate that came to cinemas then, had so many of their then current hits.. played beautifully, April, etc etc Followed BY their album we then got from the UK, Parsley Sage Rosemary & Thyme, played with intermittent lines interspersed with Canticle, an old English traditional song, that blended beautifully with PSR & Thyme.
Then all their other music before & after they broke up..& reunited for... the Concert in the Park..
A magical growing up era.. that blended so beautifully with our Own growing up & our own formative young adult years.. and the issues we faced as young people growing up. Love, loneliness, friendship, separation, broken hearts, alienation etc etc
Their music & songs were so poignant, sensitive & captured that era so beautifully..
As Someone sensitive once remarked /observed / wrote, a music critic or some observant soul - that their / Paul's early music albums, compositions - ESP before they went electronic, like Bob Dylan & others..- their early music was like church, choral music, in its tones, composition, 2 part harmonies and chordal progressions & themes.
Deeply affected & inspired by them. And as one brought up in similar choirs, singing choral music in 4 part harmony, I concurred with that keen observation..
ESP the early S&G. They were blessed with Talent richly..
    ___
Thank you so much for this evocative version,
I remember still the words of all their songs..after all these years..❗
    Thank you.

I hear the drizzle on the way
    Like a memory it falls
    Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls
And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies
    My mind's distracted and confused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you in your sleep
And kiss you when you start your day
And this song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
    Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme
And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
    I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you
And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I
