  • The Shocking Reason Simon And Garfunkel Broke Up
Simon and Garfunkel made great music and sold millions of records together, but it wasn’t only their music that made history. It was their friendship and all the feuding between them that got everyone interested. But what really happened that made them go from best friends to rivals? The truth is finally coming to light.
It all started when Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were 11 and met at Parsons High School in Queens. It didn’t take long for them to become best friends and they did what all friends do, spend time together, share their first cigarettes together and listen to a lot of music. All that shared love for music and singing was the start of a long journey between them.

I don't understand those who denigrate Garfunkle because he "only sang" while Simon did that as well as wrote the songs and accompanied the duo on guitar. How many songs did Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Tony Bennett, and Elvis write? Great artists all, and who but a few fans can name their song writers, arrangers, and back-up musicians? Art Garfunkel's gifted singing gave the team its angelic sound and he should be given all due credit for his contribution.

This is wrong. Paul did not "leave Art behind." Art wanted to be a movie star, and he wanted Paul to just sit in NY and write songs while he winged in from wherever to contribute vocals. Paul's frustration at this proposed setup is completely understandable. Paul also wrote a beautiful song for Art called "The Only Living Boy in New York," wherein he encourages Art to pursue his dream of acting ("Tom, get your plane right on time) and assures him he will be good at it.

Fun fact: in the early 60's Columbia Records formed a folk trio named The Pilgrims as an answer to the popular folk trio Peter Paul and Mary at another label.
The bands producer was looking for the right song for its debut album and checked out a potential song by a little known singer songwriter and asked him to record a demo of it for the band. But when he heard the actual demo sung by the singer songwriter and his buddy he realized it could be a hit and gave them a contract to record it themselves, and the band's debut album "Just Arrived" was released without the song.
The singer songwriter was a young Paul Simon, his buddy was Art Garfunkel, the song was " Sounds of Silence".
The lead singer of The Pilgrims who almost got to debut with" Sounds of Silence" was a black former soldier and veteran Broadway actor, singer and dancer named Robert Guillaume.
In the 70's and 80's he went on to a successful tv career starring in two hit sitcoms "Soap" and "Benson".
