  • This is a SUPER SIMPLE way of shooting a hyperlapse by using a gimbal to steady your shot as you walk slowly. Ideally I'd have walked this even more slowly.

    Kudos to the super nice security guy who let me continue filming even though his bosses were probably watching on CCTV! If you don't have a gimbal, you can do this handheld or on a monopod/gorillapod, and then apply some warp stabiliser to the clip before you speed it up.

      What frame rate should you shoot at for this to work? Or does it matter?

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 лет назад

      Doesn't really matter but I guess 24p would be best as you'll be speeding it up anyway so any higher and you're just recording unnecessary extra data

    The ultimate vlogging car setup is: suction cup with a 1/4" mount + smartphone gimbal like Zhiyun Smooth Q or similar and of course a smartphone :) You can also mount small mic on the gimbal :)

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 лет назад

      Nice! Since recording this I've actually gone for a 3 cup suction mounting to the top of the cage, then an additional suction cup on a friction arm attaching to the NATO rail on the side of the cage. Smooth as butter now! And I have a small coldshoe on the other side of the cage to mount the mic :-)

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  5 лет назад

      Hey Robert, I would actually suggest you set your focus to manual and then think about what item you want the viewer to focus on in your hyperlapse and set the focus to that. Most of the time it's a building or landmark which for a wide lens like a 16mm would be pretty close to infinity focus. But it's a good way of thinking about what it is you want to show as well.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 лет назад +2

      Hey man, I appreciate the feedback. I'm guessing you're referring to Peter McKinnon's intro? Funny thing is he bought a template from VideoHive and inserted his footage. I made every single thing in this intro myself, including the footage, the glitches which are from the After Effect template I made, the edit, everything. Only thing not mine is the music. So when you say I should add my own touch to it, this is it man. I think you should watch some of my other videos first before deciding that I'm somehow not being real to myself. I really don't mean for this to come across as insulting/insulted. But I've been using glitches and bold colour effects and making tutorials about them for 5 years now, I'm not about to change that because it has vague similarities to another RUclipsr. That would be dishonest to myself.

    One question, does the fps matter? I'd think that the lower fps would help more with the post blur effect but I can't be sure.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 лет назад

      Why, thank you! :-)
      I don't think the fps will matter really when you consider that you're speeding this up to 1000% - 2000% of its original speed. If you're able to shoot at a lower shutter then it will help a little with the motion blur, but then you run the risk of your image looking a little soft from movement.

    Did you just make an ordinary video recording? If not, what settings are you using eg. shutter speed (even though you mentioned it). I want to tryout this with a Feiyutech G6 and a GoPro Hero 5 Black.

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 лет назад

      Yep just ordinary video recording. Shutter doesn't matter as much as you apply the frame blending blur when you speed up the footage.

  • @PaulBienvenu1

    Do you recommand an auto iso if light changes? Haven't tried yet, waiting to receive my gimbal..
    Is it important to keep 1/50 for 25 fps or shutter speed does not matter? Thanks!

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  5 лет назад

      No for this technique it does not matter as we'll be blending the frames together in post to make motion blur. So whatever shutter you need to expose correctly is fine, even if it's 1/8000

      If you shoot it this way you don't need the app at all, you just film. But if you want to shoot a proper stills timelapse and don't want to buy the app, then sure get an intervalometer that you plug in via USB. But I can highly recommend the app, it works REALLY well!

      As do I! I just wanted to show that it's doable even if you're not set up to take interval stills. I made another tutorial after this one where I show a hyperlapse on a gimbal again but this time using an intervalometer and shooting RAW images. You're shooting 6K RAW photos so way more flexibility for post, but it's also far less forgiving during the shoot.

    My thought on shooting from inside the car, some type of heavy duty suction cup that that can go on the window and support your camera while in the gimbal.
    2nd bit of advice, you're good at what you do, but PLEASE DO NOT try to be Peter McKinnon. You're the 2nd dude I've seen on RUclips today who opened up with "What's up everybody" in the same manner and copying his SHOOP sound effect with their mouth while putting their hand up to the camera to change shot/location. Worse still you did it more times in this video than he ever does in one video.
    That said, you have your own personality and you're good at what you do. Please be YOU!!!
    I say this with the greatest of respect. I hope you take it in the good manner than I am saying it.
    Cheers!

    • @dodmedia
      @dodmedia  6 лет назад +3

      Jason McNamara cheers Jason, I did a follow-up video where I ended up using a 3 point suction cup and an additional side arm for stability. Works great!
      As for the Peter McKinnon thoughts, I find it baffling that I get so many accusations of copying someone for doing something which feels so natural and is a tried and tested camera gimmick. This didn't come into existence one year ago when he started getting traction, it's been around for far far longer, as has greeting people on camera (saying what's up or how's it going as an opening is very different from imitating his whole PWHATSUP thing. That's his yes. Wouldn't touch it.) I've also been told I'm not "allowed" to shoot a coffee making process anymore too, because its copying Peter McKinnon. And I appreciate what you're saying, i know it can definitely seem that way, but I'd urge you to watch more than one video of mine or the next youtuber you come across who makes a swoosh sound before writing a comment telling them they're copying someone. I've been "swooshing" and "handlensing" (I don't know if there's an actual term for these lol) for a long time as have thousands of other people who interact in front of a camera. You really think one person can take ownership of that?
      Anyway all this to say I do appreciate your suggestion, but my own would be to watch a few more videos before forming your opinion, as you'll see we're very different, despite using many of the same camera gimmicks, and we produce very different content. I hope to see you around! 👍

    • @JasonMcNamara
      @JasonMcNamara 6 лет назад

      Full respect to you for taking that one on the chin while still stating your case. Can someone take ownership of a style like that? Well I have to say when the guy is currently sitting on 1,841,597 subs with 180 videos it's pretty tough to say that he wouldn't "own" have ownership of those moves.
      And yes, I have not had a chance to look at any else of yours and will try to get to it soon. I had an extra 100+ on here. After I finished working for the company I was working for here in Tokyo they (respectfully, meaning I had no choice) asked me to set them to Private for the time being. It's a Japanese thing. My opening tag was "Greetings folks" and I finished with "Rock on" as I am a musician. I was lucky enough to do videos with Eddie Van Halen among others.
      So again, if you haven't found it already I hope you can come up with your own thing. Remember, RUclips is totally worldwide so even if you use something that is a really local & typical UK think, you could take it to the world and make it yours ;-)
      On top of all that, I'm happy you found a solution to your in car issue.
      Cheers from Tokyo!
