I think Google is following Apple's footsteps cautiously. Developing their own chip and ecosystem. It's a welcome step. Ofcourse there will be some stutters in the beginning but they are doing a smart job by covering any shortcomings of hardware by giving you the best Android software experience. I suppose by Tensor G5, they should be able to put out a competent "flagship" processor. However, they will have to achieve it by introducing more exclusive features through Pixel drop along the way making 'The Pixel Experience' more unique for their customers.

Making a custom chip is a big challenge for any company including someone like apple who took forever to build their own thing. I am guessing at least 5 years are required to build a chip and advancing on it to truly compete with your rivals for a company like google. Tensor G3 was definitely a big leap from G2, give it couple of more years and by the time G5 or G6 comes out, Pixels will be very efficient and powerful at the same time. Considering there has been 8 generations of pixels, Google definitely is serious about their phone.

I was surprised of how flagship like it felt for that price.
But one thing bugged me, the heating and battery drain!
It bothered me so much in had to sell it.
The phone never felt slow, but always heated during normal use (even more on lte)
To give you a comparison, I got the moto edge 30 later, that thing heated way less and gave me more battery than the pixel 6a even though it had a 6.5 inch 120 hz screen screen with only a 4000mah battery!
What I mean is, I'm happy with google wanting to make their own custom chips. And I don't want them to use the strongest chip. But I just want them to make it efficient with good thermals. Honestly, the Mali gpu is shit!
They made a good start with the tensor, hope they concentrate more on providing a good chip.(with good thermals and a good gpu) . Hope they team up with tsmc for their production or make a custom chip with Qualcomm. Google is a very big company whose main income isn't from the sale of their smartphones, so i think they can take come risk and come up with better solutions!

My Pixel 6 that I'm currently using does everything I want it to do and more, than the iphone 6 I switched from back in early 2022. My family wouldn't get me a newer iPhone as they didn't want to get locked in another extensive contract, shell out over $1k just for a phone that would be replaced by a newer better one the same year or next year, and our own issues with apple in the past costing us time or money.
I chose the pixel 6 as it was a breath of fresh air due to the fact that I got a new phone and new laptop for college for the same price as a single iphone. Also as I stated prior, they want to buy the phone out right... We want to own it... Not rent it, pay off on time, get locked in a contract, etc. Most new phones are gotten this way and we don't like it, as it's not for us.
Other than that Tensor has promise and it has done better than my friends phones that used snapdragon. Their phones were mostly new Samsung phones at the time when I got my P6 last year and it lasted way longer in battery life than theirs did and was pretty snappy compared to theirs. The tensor CPU isn't gonna win everything or be "the best" but it does what it should and does it well (at least for me). As long as they keep improving the chip and make it more efficient I have hope that it will all be worth it in future generations.

There are some bugs here and there but still this is an amazing experience. Speaking about the performance, it's enough to handle both heavy games and day to day tasks. I've seen videos where people say there isn't a score jump between g1 and g2, if it's really that case then still I don't mind as g1 is also powerful enough to handle all modern day tasks. Google (Pixel) fans will claim that they do not need performance and optimisation is the thing. The reality and truths are, like Apple, have both and lead rather than make excuses.
The only good take is that Google knows the chip is years behind and has compensated buyers with better value pricing. The Pixel 7Pro is not a power-user phone but more for a casual user with disposable income. The Pixel 7 and 7a are better options as the chip is more competitive in less expensive phones.
FWIW it seems likely that the Pixel 8Pro may be Tensor 3 and that the Pixel 8a may be Tensor 2 due to price increases for the 4nm process.

Okay yeah the Tensor chip lacks in raw power when compared to others, but realistically, what does the average user do that requires more processing power than the Tensor chip can provide ? The average user doesn't need all the power in the Qualcomm and Apple chips to browse TikTok and other social media. In practice, it takes what, 30 seconds more, maybe 1 minute to process and convert a video ? Sure, it does. But how many people really do anything that requires that much processing power ? Maybe 2 out of 10, let's go with that. Well, on a phone with a Tensor chip they'll have to wait a little more for their videos to convert. And ? Not really a big issue, is it ?
On the other hand, you get better machine learning and great image processing as well as outstanding voice to text recognition, improved assistant, etc.
This is my hill, and I would die on it. The fact that the Tensor chip isn't as powerful as the main two competitors isn't an issue at all, even more so taking into account what it does better than said competitors.
The only thing the Tensor needs to get better at is efficiency.
I feel it's far more appropriate to focus on how Apple has such an incredible, powerful chipset yet its own OS won't allow for multitasking.
Yeah, your video encoding will be faster than on my Pixel 7 Pro, but let's see you tab away from it and do something else while the video processes in the background.
