Other than the fact that people purposely shit on other peoples music taste, i find it as a good way to connect with others. Having similar music taste with someone is the greatest feeling in the world

It's not such a weird thing to find amazing/wonderful to find someone with the same music taste as you, especially when you're into underground shite. The sense of community in some of these subcultures is crazy, people devote their lives to them because that's the place they belong and want to be. Not very mundane either, can't think of any reason making snap connections with people is mundane.

Exactly! My liked stylist ranges from classical, to goth, weirdcore Lemon Demon-esque, to meme remixes and a sprinkle of pop, game soundtracks, etc. Some of my friends get musical whiplash but the most of us do the same thing. Bangers are bangers. Bangers are liked. I reign supreme with over 1000 songs in my liked playlist and over 20 other smaller ones-- (thanks mental illness)

Yeah, fellow metalhead here. Literally only one of my top five Wrapped artists was a metal band: Avenged Sevenfold. And even ignoring the whole "oh they aren't metal" crowd, their new record was more of a Prog album if anything. So I basically had no metal artists in mine. Which was super weird, considering I literally have a channel about metal music, and 90% of my taste is metal or metal adjacent (i.e: Grunge, harder Classic Rock, etc.) but my wrapped was... not that. It's interesting though, I felt that same vibe, that people just want to be a stereotype. I think I deliberately forced myself to listen to other genres this year to escape that stereotyping. Cool video, neat topic.
My top artists were opeth, angra, persefone, slipknot, slayer but my top song was a brazillian funk song
I only really got into music at the start of this year and wrapped sorta helped me see the changes to my taste a decent amount. I wasn't surprised who my top artist was but i was surprised i was in the top 0.1% of black sabbath listeners since i've only been listening to them a lot for a few months.

RUclips wins for me, most Metal is not on Spotify simply, so they lack a giant catalogue of LPs, EPs, and Demos. Channels like Gore Grinder or BrutalMusicTV keep me here, and I’ll never waste a penny on Spotify.

My Wrapped actually did suck, but for an actual reason: I listened to one game's OST on repeat for a week or two after finishing it, then just added some of the tracks to my Liked. But that period of repeating skewed my Wrapped to hell and back, so much that my Top 4 of the Top 5 songs were just from that OST! Not the end of the world, most of the people I would share it to know what I listen to, but still silly.
This is what happened to be too, I put on movie soundtracks to study or do homework so john Williams and some dude named Samuel Kim was on my wrapped. Very silly stufg

Had a somewhat similar situation with two softboiledegg songs being in my top five because I listened to them a couple times while getting ready and experimenting with gyaru style. Although I like the music I would‘ve liked to see some other songs I genuinely enjoyed more rather than stuff I listened to for the vibes or kinda random songs from playlists I had
That happened to me last year with the Komi Can't Communicate OST (I had covid and binge-listened for a two weeks) which took up 4 of my top 5, and then randomly Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt was #5 because it's relaxing and easy to listen to on repeat. All the while I'm a massive metalhead lol.
Same here - did pay attention to the baclog of Dark Ambient I needed to sort out to playlists, and all I hear on Wrapped is Ambient : D
It's as if it WANTS to find something on repeat to shove it down the throat that ONE MORE TIME.
Another reason why wrapped sucks is that spotify recommendations suck nowadays. I listen a lot to daily mixes, and they were great like 5 years ago, good variety, a lot good bands that i haven't heard before. Now it's just the same 10 songs in different order. 4 out of 6 of my daily mixes are exactly the same now (black metal + some melodic death metal, same bands in all playlists). That's the problem with Spotify.
That's why i don't listen to the recommendations. There are way better playlists from normal users

My wrapped seemed wrong, but then I realized it's because I download albums I really like and listen to them OFF Spotify. For a brief moment, I wondered if I could get a more accurate wrapped next year if I exclusively listened to music on Spotify.... and then I realized that's exactly why they do this.

The only thing that pissed me off about wrapped this year was that they had POV: Indie as a top genre for so many people. It's not a genre. The term indie originated from whether or not musicians and bands were signed to large labels and record companies, rather than being a type of music. Because of this logic, of course people are going to have indie as a "top genre", because of the sheer amount of musicians and groups that have build themselves up rather than being bought out or advertised by a large company.
And also the fact it’s not divided in subgenres annoy me.
the build themselves up is kind of a meme, being indie doesn't mean merit or being broke. Some of the most popular indie spent a shit ton of their parents money to hire top studios and producing and there's nothing humble about it

I liked the slides that showed you when you were listening to each artist most really helped me pinpoint when I was down bad the most throughout the year
People are just scared to seem too basic. Or even if they really like all the stuff they listen to, they feel like they want to be more adventurous and have fomo for a lot of recommendations they wish they'd gotten to.
My thing is just doing a deep dive into the local scenes. I think three of my top 5 genres had a Minnesota or Minneapolis prefix.
One one hand I think elitism is cringe in almost every form and you should never tolerate it in yourself or others.
On the other hand my friend had Shawn Mendes as his top artist in his spotify wrapped, and I will never give up my god given right to bully him over this all year.
My previous wrapped was a letdown so I've straightened up myself and done lot of development with my tastes so my next wrapped will be filled with elitistic jazz fusion.

My #1 youtube wrapped artist was Crazy Town. I only know 2 songs - Darkside and Butterfly. That was apparently enough to do the job, mostly Darkside, but I must admit that Butterfly got its spin couple times too.
I honestly didn't know people cared so much about spotify wraps. When they pop up on mine I try to get past it as soon as possible to hear the same song I've been listening to the last time.

By day, I listen mostly to metal and hardcore punk like Hatebreed, Slaughter To Prevail, Knocked Loose, Will Haven (extremely underrated band all hardcore fans should check out), Sunami, DRAIN, Pain Of Truth, Mindforce, Infant Annihilator, and etc...but then i go to bed and sleep every night while Gospel bluegrass plays for six-eight hours straight at low volume on my Echo Dot on the headboard of my bed. My ex girlfriend that I have known and been friends with for over 20 years started one of those shared Spotify playlists with me. When she did, I started laughing and said "okay! be prepared to worship Satan and find Jesus simultaneously." 😂 Love you channel! been a fan for a good number of months. Keep making badass music-nerd vids! You are a super funny and smart individual. 😎

So, given your script here, I kinda expect you to broaden the styles you cover. You are absolutely right, music is super diverse, and I'd argue there is music to find that can be appealing to you in pretty much any genre.
E.g. Baroque, Classical, Acid(core), Grime, (psy/hard)trance, jungle, EBM, industrial, hiphop, RBB, rap, glitchhop, shranz, (imo) pre-2006-2008 hardstyle, pop that's at least 10-20 years old as to filter the gems from the crap (tho neoliberalism might've ruined pop now, particularly as the social media age kicked off, with it's massive data-collecting on individual consumer behaviour). Etc.

I actually quite like my wrapped this year. My top genres were progressive and alternative metal, but my top artists were this Finnish rapper who came in second in Eurovision this year and Maneskin. I don't care if people don't care for them, because I love their music, which is why I listened to it that much. I do admit that I've had other years, where I would listen to some songs I'm indifferent to just because they came on, so it was annoying seeing those in my wrapped, but this year I think I listened to more music I actually liked, which is why I'm rather content.
Also I hate the people saying "Nobody cares about your spotify wrapped". I CARE! I ask all my friends to share their stats with me. It's so fun to compare and seeing that me and all my friends are something like the top 0,5% of listeners of our top artists is so fun! (Top 0,1% of Kaarija listeners here lol).
I got Spotify only because RUclips playlists started glitching and too many times and started playing totally random videos outside the playlist.
And after I got Spotify over 90% time I have listened various podcasts. 😅 And also with Spotify it is that when a playlist ends it may start playing something crap. Most frustrating thing is that you can't block podcasts in Spotify so if you have found a podcast that you don't like or a podcast that you have already listened completely you can't prevent Spotify to play them again.
I like how my spotify wrapped turned out. Fits very well. The only annoying part is spotify throwing many different genres into the "alternative metal" pot.... or maybe im just a weirdo, idk lol

People's preoccupation about their music listening doesn't just come down to concerns about being a bad judge of the 'objective' parts of quality but the perceived implications of their subjective judgments on their personality and the implications of their tastes on their scene/cultural affiliations. E.g., if you listened mainly to top-40 charting artists, you may worry that you'll be perceived as basic, that people may assume you don't expose yourself to many experiences, etc. - that you're uninteresting. If you listened to mostly black metal, that would demonstrate strong affiliation to that scene and give the impression that you can be assumed to somewhat fit the (largely unwelcoming) cultural stereotypes of that scene, furthering your credibility within it but alienating you from everyone outside it. These assumptions usually aren't fair, but because (especially for more specific tastes) the associations often bear out to some degree, it's hard to stop yourself from making them altogether, which is why it's hard not to worry about others making them as well.
A lot of people are ashamed of having "too basic" taste in music, but I'm one of those people who are the opposite. I don't want to tell people about my music taste because I don't want to seem like the annoying "I'm not like other girls" type. Honestly, it took me a while to even start frequently listening to music because of fear of others judging my music taste even though no one really asks me what music I like, but I did have an experience in school where a teacher asked everyone what their favorite musical artist is and I was LITERALLY the only person who said an artist who wasn't super popular and I didn't feel cool for being different, I just felt embarrassed.
My spotify wrapped literally had three kyuss songs in my top 5. Nothing gets worse than that.

I must say that while taste is subjective, it does have a objective basis. Someone's nationality, ethnicity, sex, sexuality among things and especially social class are principal in creating everyone's reality and how it is expressed through music.

I don't have and never had any shame for my music. Sometimes a bad band makes two good songs (Nickleback), good bands have a glaring problem that everyone points and laughs at (Limp Bizkit), Your favourite band is simple (Helmet), cannot get some genres that 'everyone else' in your group interacts with (most pop and death metal or more specifically Death, The Philosopher is the only one I like and every other song I've heard has robotic and random time signatures and key changes), like something that nobody knows (Stompbox) and enjoy something that others blindly hate.
Objectivity in music does not exist. Music is the most subjective form of art.

Both Three Days Grace and Godsmack were both in my top 5 bands of the year, I feel like I have a right to be disgusted with it.
