I'd love some tips on what should a first-timer learn when it comes to boat-building & maintenance. Useful Tools in the shop vs on the boat, Types of Glue, Paint, Sail repair, fixing rusty and rotting spots. Your channel has been an inspiration!
I built my boat over the course of about 2 1/2 years, launching in late summer 2015. Keeping track of the time I spent on her was abandoned pretty early in the project but I suppose at some point between day sails and overnight adventures we'll tip over into more sailing than building time. Working against me is our short prime sailing season of about 4 months with the other 8 tending towards cold ,wet and dark. I'm also actively building small parts for the Next Boat...that's going to take a bite out too. Building and maintaining boats is my idea of fun, actually using the boats is almost secondary to mucking around in my shop.
I think it is important to love the repairs and maintenance side just as much as sailing. The only other option is a huge bank account so you can get others to do the work for you.
Hi Chris I’m more of a racer than a cruiser, well a race is a cruise with a mission to be first to finish, anyway I spend about 50/50 time racing and maintenance. We often race on the first and third Sunday of the month with other races in between. Thanks Chris great content Shaun.
Hey Shaun, you've cracked the code! Racing is indeed a cruise with a mission. And it's great to hear that you're equally dedicated to racing and maintenance. Just remember, while you're racing to be first to finish, don't forget to enjoy the ride along the way!
Great stuff Chris! Looking forward to the separate do up tip videos and of course the sailing! As for me, I've only motored my old yacht around, not yet to sail her, she needs a haul out first as she's been a bit neglected by a few of her owners. But many hours of scrubbing and cleaning have been put in, nearly naught to show for it though! 😂
Ah, the joys of boat ownership! It seems like there's always something that needs fixing or cleaning. But hey, just think of it as building character for both you and your yacht!
There those that maintain and those that run out of maintenance. Unfortunately when runout occurs, you're get caught rescuing yet another neglected beauty to tinker with! I'm now down to three boats but I do try to sail as often as variable weather allows. Both avenues offer rewards so enjoy just yourself!
Looks like you've found a way to make the most out of both maintaining and rescuing boats! Who needs a gym membership when you have three boats to tinker with? Keep enjoying the rewards and smooth sailing!
I bought an 18 foot trailor sailor had 2 big lead ingots in the bilge, thought why do I need these boat has a steel keel so removed them. After the mast hit the water in the first big gust decided to put them back.
With what little time I have, I prefer to spend it on the water. I minimize effort to keep her serviceable, and get right to sailing and overnighting. Thank goodness for fiberglass, cheers!
With minimal effort and maximum enjoyment, you've truly mastered the art of efficient sailing! Who needs complicated maintenance when you can just focus on the important things - like catching the perfect sunset on the water? I have restored a couple of glass boats. the things that go wrong are usually encapsulated wood or ply.
I would definitely say I spend more time maintaining than sailing. Though the maintaining is predominantly ‘improvements’ more than fixing things. Especially now I have my newer glass boat. Oh for retirement when I can finally be off sailing every day…

Thanks very interesting hope your lashings prove to be effective any thing like thst is always an unnerving trial snd error process.
Trial yes but no margin for error on this one.

Looks like your boat reminded you who's boss! Lesson learned, right?

The more I sail the more I mend. Emotionally on the water. and afterwards boat mending.
Interesting, hope no one was downwind from the fire?
We were on 200 acres. Nearest downwind neighbour about 2 km away.
