I love your channel because you're also focussing on the more affordable devices. Watching most other tech channels is like watching reviews for Ferrari or Maserati, while in real life your looking for a Toyota.
This is the best review video I have ever watched. I think everyone should focus on explaining the actual features of laptop and benchmarks. Good review...
Great review. I appreciate the labeling of ports as you describe them. Normally enjoy reviews from Lisa of MobileTech. This review is up there, if not better.
I got the i7 version with 16 gb ram and 512 gb ssd. Super sturdy keyboard. Installed linux. Gave it to my parents. Perfect for basic documents, email, and zoom meetings!
I purchased a Thinkpad T490 on the Lenovo website last week Friday, but then checked today and saw a crazily reduced price for the T490S model. I did a little bit of research and decided to return my original order of the T490 and stick with the T490s. The T490s however was just over $400 more. After doing a little bit of research, these machines look virtually identical, with of course the exception of the weight of the T490s. If anyone could please share their thoughts, I would appreciate that. Thank you.
@@andrewmarcdavid One last thing, can you please share your thoughts on the differences between the T490 and the T490s, other than the size and weight. It would be very much appreciated, as I previously mentioned I exchanged the T490 for the T490s. Thank you, again.
Nice review, nice price, nice keyboards, nice ports, soldered memory is bad, sd card full size would be a plus, as well as 4 lane tb3. Still an exceptional buy compared to Microsoft Surface and Apple Macbook Pro, and Dell XPS 13. Great Apha Numeric outtakes😀
@Hillside ikr, I have a t490s for sale here on my local shop for 740 euros but it's only 8gb, I might need to upgrade it in the future so I'm not sure if I should get it lol.
Nice computer for my wife, she loved the 410s she used for years and then I gave her a Dell, she has not forgiven me for that... I mean the standard 899 packs a lot of oomph for the price. By the way, I love the blooper reel - I have started saying fudge or frig because there are young kids around me and if they see a grown-up use the F word out loud their mommies might not bring the computer back to my repair shop.
Three years later and my T490s is still running very strong, it is still used nearly everyday. The one thing that has sucked the entire time has been the absolutely anemic speakers this thing has. To describe them as pathetic would be an improvement, I'll never understand why they shipped it with such low powered speakers. As I type this, I am playing Pantera - Walk at full volume with a decibel meter directly on top of the laptop and it am struggling to surpass 55 dB which is rated as a "Quiet Office".
Any possibility of you reviewing the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2? The only coverage I've seen on that so far is from when it was announced and a few videos from lesser known channels.
Thanks for this thorough review! Since you have tested both the X1 Carbon 7th Gen and the T490s, which one would you recommend (putting aside the price)? Or the X1 Carbon 8th Gen? Don't know if you have had the chance to test it.
I am in the market for a new laptop over the next few months. I recently bought a Lenovo X1 but the colors were washed out (had a resolution of 1920 x 1080 anti-glare). Additionally track pad was very small and made scrolling difficult along with thinner keyboard that made typing less comfortable. I was looking at the specs for both they seem pretty equivalent if I go with 16GB ram and 500gb ssHD and i7 processor. It appears that main difference is that the t490s has less ports, is thinner, and weighs less. Otherwise performance is comparable. However can anyone comment if colors are washed out or to circumvent this, would I need to upgrade to the higher grade display 2560x1440? My only gripe is that it is glossy. Anyway to circumvent this or should I be looking at a different machine?
What's really different between this and X1C with same specs? I feel like this is better for performance given it's better thermals why is it that the other is more expensive besides the screen ?
When did $1200 become "affordable" for a laptop with bargain-bin specs. 1080p, no gpu, bare minimum ram and a low voltage processor. The only difference between this and a $300 Walmart laptop is the brand name and build quality, which is not worth a $1000 premium. That's laughable
Looking for thin laptop for my college kids....i'm thinking I5, 16GB RAM....490S or X1 Carbon? Is X1 Carbon worth the extra money or stick with 490S? (also open to other recommendations)
The speakers here are not good, I have the T490s and I have seen people on Reddit complain about them too, speakers are not very loud and they sound just okay.
absolutly useless - without ful size RJ45 and normal upgradeabilty... what the purpose of this... shit (exuse me... )? we already have such carbon and x390... HEY LENOVO?!! despite of that - very nice review!
CPU is disappointing. I've seen a i7-8565U fitted to the ASUS P4103FA VivoBook 14 Laptop which also is a Mil Spec laptop. The battery life on this laptop claims to be 24 hours too.
I'm just now checking out your video as I've just bought a refurbished t490s with 32gb RAM, 500gb SSD, intel core i7 8th gen. Does my laptop support upgrading to a 1 or 2TB SSD? I figure I can buy the upgraded drive and it's simple enough to replace myself (unscrew, swap out like for like), but I don't know enough about computers to know if my computer will support this upgrade or if it will slow down performance. For extra info, I'm a university student who bought this laptop (because it was cheap and had 32gb RAM) for GIS studies/applications (specifically, ArcGIS Pro) because my last laptop was totally inadequate, before it died completely. In addition, what else could I upgrade/change/maximise? Thank you for your assistance; other than writing assignments, surfing the net and watching movies, I'm a complete computer novice. Note: my version has no fingerprint scanner, but everything else LOOKS the same.
M W I’m far from being an expert, but I understood from my little research that the cooling system in x1 carbon cools better when the laptop is under stress... nonetheless, I may be wrong...
You do realize that not everyone has the same usage scenario, right? Yeah, the lack of an upgrade path sucks, but I'm sure it's a good computer in it's own right.
ssd at lease, and they are under $100 for a 1 TB while companies charge $600 or more and keep the base for the next machine on the line. It also has actual ports, a much better spalsh proof keyboard, and similar performance, trackpoint. Apple will have better speakers and trackpad, and higher resolution but glossy display. And apple tb3 4 lanes is shared by it's limited 2 usbc ports. no sd card, no hdmi, no usba, no ethernet, and quite a bit more exspensive as it's base only has 128GB.

This year x1 t490 makes more sense than x1 carbon
Love it ..... I have the T490s I 7 and still haven't found a flaw yet . Keep up the good reviews.
Thanks, will do!
Your voice is amazing! Thanks for the review!
PS: Andrew, these reviews are incredible. I found your review to be very helpful and informative. Keep up the great work!

Just love your laptop reviews.
I've been searching for a solid USB C hub for a few weeks now. This one looks pretty good though. I'll definitely check it out.

such a shame that it has an integrated intel graphics.. and no upgradeable ram
onboard wifi card,but why
I actually see the lack of the gpu as an advantage because it saves battery life, lowers weight and heat output
Eventhough it performs well
I don’t think you’ll gain anything at all putting a graphic card in a ultra book. That’s stupid. You want performance, go for a bigger laptop

Wait a minute, do you have another RUclips channel?
I think I heard the same voice in another channel's videos.
Nice machine, please make comparison with X1 7th gen
Dont forget the noisy fan inside.
Good job!!!
At last a very good front facing camera 👍
Great review! The webcam looks pretty!
Still got my IBM Thinkpad x60

Lenovo messed it up by not allowing to replace/upgrade RAM and wireless. I have the T480s, and both can be upgraded/replaced. Shame on Lenovo.
I bought it seeing your video but touchpad corners are not pressable for click ? Is it expected or manufacturing defect...kindly confirm..
Not seeing a link to the 9 in 1 did I miss that in the description?
Major downside is it still uses widescreen

Yes but supports 2 lanes not 4 lanes so there might be a bottleneck
