Hopingover Leavesinfall It was aimed more at BvS, where the studio and fanboys kept saying how the extended cut on BD is amazing and fixes the entire movie. In the end it only explained a few plot holes and added pointless scenes.
Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro 9:25 - E3 40:10 - The Man Who Wasn't There (SPOILERS) 1:01:35 - Q&A Adam's film recommendation for next weekend is Martyrs (2008)
Shit guys!!! The Man Who Wasn't There, has been on of my favorite Coen Brother's movies, since it came out. It's also one of Thorton's best performances. It is criminally underrated, so I'm really glad to see you are giving it some much needed attention here.
Megan is Missing is the video that was posted on Reddit years ago and Adam plugged his channel in the comments. It was the first video I watched of his stuff. I remember laughing so god damn hard and binged death race, cyber bully, etc. Shit, I think that was 5 or 6 years ago.
Eh, I don't necessarily think it's so much 'films that go too far.' I think the way it's almost like two different films smushed together could be polarizing, as well as that they may think the last half hour is a bit dragged out. But even if they hate it, I'm excited to hear their reasons why.
Regarding the Birdo thing, apparently in the Japanese descriptions of the games Birdo is a male who crossdresses for fun. The Western translations pretend Birdo is just female.
RickRaptor105 Nah, it's an error that only ever existed in the manual for SMB2's NTSCU release You're probably thinking of Gracie from Animal Crossing, the gay fashion giraffe who's just a woman in the English translations
Nope, not a crossdresser! She's explicitly stated to be transgender, albeit in a very transphobic way. The Super Mario Bros. 2 manual states, "Birdo is a boy who thinks he is a girl, and would rather be referred to as 'Birdetta.'" Later games just refer to her as a woman, with her and Yoshi being romantically involved. But certain games published by Nintento, such as Captain Rainbow, still implicitly refer to her transgender status-- for example, in one she's wrongly imprisoned for trying to use the female restroom. Which is...super blatant. She's lauded pretty frequently in LGBTQ circles as the first transgender videogame character!
Yeah, but that's fucking ridiculous. Transwomen aren't "boys who think they're girls", so if Birdo is a boy who thinks he's a girl then he's not trans: he's a boy. You can't say it's "explicitly stated" that he's a transwoman when what's literally stated is the opposite. LGBT circles need to get their heads on straight.
1 2 You're absolutely right. Trans women are women trapped in the wrong body, not 'boys who think they're something else'. But obviously a lot of people don't see that-- Birdo's gender identity wasn't intended to be a progressive thing, it was intended to be a transphobic joke a la "Haha, look at this guy who thinks he's a lady." 'X who thinks they're X" is one very common phrasing for the way transphobic people explain trans folks. And Birdo was indeed likely created by conservative or transphobic creators, but she and her identity took on a life of their own and eventually Nintendo just decided to roll with it.
Really fun discussion, but one tiny nitpick.... Animation is not a film "genre" per se, as much as it is a medium. Still interesting to hear Ralph's thoughts on it, but a first step towards him getting more into animated films might be with a better understanding of how animation is its own art form capable of nearly any genre. For example, Waking Life's rotoscoped conversations about philosophy have little in common with the family-friendly Odyssey-type journey of Finding Nemo, and both are a far cry from the sci-fi dystopian action film Akira. There are many unique animated films that fall under all sorts of categories if one looks around a bit. Thank you for another fun episode, it's always pleasant to hear your conversations.
"Friends" are boring, Sardonicast isn't. So I guess Sardonicast are replacing friends... My friends. But maybe we could be friends. I show you my love and you show me your love.
Would really love to hear you guys discuss some more of the Coen Brothers’ films, especially they’re lesser talked about efforts. A Serious Man would be great since you guys are obviously huge fans. Burn After Reading is still one of the funniest movies ever, in my opinion, and Inside Llewyn Davis is hands down a masterpiece, and nobody talks about any of them, much like The Man Who Wasn’t There. Get on guys!
Alex: “I’m really hyped for the new Smash Bros. game.” Ralph: “It’s gonna be awesome!” Adum: *immediately shifts conversation towards the creatively void nature of corporations in the games industry*
I am surprised none of you mentioned Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting or Dead Poet’s Society in terms of comedic actors giving dramatic performances
While I was waiting for your podcast on Spotify, I tried Google Podcasts app and was very happy to find sweet sweet Sardonicast there. So, that's an option. Now I can finally be that weird girl with headphones who laughs out loud on the bus
I have just seen "The Man who Wasn't There" and it isn't my favorite Coen brothers movie, but that's not saying much because they made Fargo. I liked it a lot! Great dialogue backed up by great actors. Nice taste Alex
Eh i don't know. He was the consultant of How to train your dragon movies. Also i guess Ep IX would be kinda dystopic like Blade Runner 2049 considerating Kylo ren is the emperor. I dont know. But if they want to attract China, they better start using colors
1997residente After the greyish color palette of Rogue One and Solo, I'd say they should do something more colorful. Even dystopia can be full of color, just look at the original Blade Runner. The world was way more vibrant than 2049.
Kojima is the only person to have serious conversations of a world wide nuclear crisis, poop jokes, and shirtless wrestling matches with an evil President to be normal in his games. Also girls who can't wear shirts because she breaths out of her skin for some reason.
Q and A questions: 1:01:56 - What film would you consider the worst of all time? 1:08:49 - Favorite documentaries? 1:15:26 - What are your favorite dramatic roles from usually comedic actors? 1:18:08 - What's a genre of film you have the hardest time getting into?
You guys should watch and talk about First Reformed. I think you all would love it. Also, damn, Adam with the Martyrs recommendation. I kind of want them to talk about Cannibal Holocaust at some point if they're willing to go this dark.
you keep saying dear zachary will make you cry, buti think that desensitized me to it because i didnt get near the emotional impact that you clearly felt on my watch of it
Isn’t birdo the exact opposite from the Disney thing? In the Japanese version of smb2, he was described as trans and since then, Nintendo has backpedaled now claiming that birdo is a girl.
The thing is, they never called her "trans". They probably meant it as a joke in the original, but later realized that as a joke it could only make them look bad and offend people, so they took it back.
I like Eli Roth films tho. I judge specific types of films on different standards and he makes clear exploitation sleazy films. It’s unfair to judge his work on the same scale you judge shit like Barry Lyndon. Hostel Part II is an excellent exploitation film with interesting social commentary.
I just wanted to point out something regarding the last question about genres and one of the answer was animation, animation is not a genre, is a medium and if Brad Bird hears you he will punch you in the face, here is the proof: Brad Bird “…Animation is not a genre. It is a method of storytelling. People are constantly analyzing it and misanalysing it as if it is a genre. It isn’t a genre. It can do horror films, it can do adult comedies if it wanted to, it could do fairy tales, it could do science fiction, it could do musicals, it could mystery, it can do anything. Because Disney has been the only one that’s lavished any care on it, people [then] think it’s the only kind that can be told successfully…” And here’s the best one “People think of animation only doing things where people are dancing around and doing a lot of histrionics, but animation is not a genre. And people keep saying, "The animation genre. It's not a genre! A Western is a genre! Animation is an art form, and it can do any genre. You know, it can do a detective film, a cowboy film, a horror film, an R-rated film or a kids' fairy tale. But it doesn't do one thing. And, next time I hear, "What's it like working in the animation genre? I'm going to punch that person!!” [From the audio commentary on the DVD for "The Incredibles"]
While listening to this, I happened to be playing on my Xbox One. So when they got to the part about how the Xbox One looks like a VCR, I looked down and realized that I had coincidentally placed my console right next to my VCR. No joke.

Sardonicast: "You can't release an alpha movie and patch it."

Mattchester DC then proceeds to drop the beer like they dropped the ball
Charlie Harris And then DC just stares at the spilled beer for 8 years, while figuring out the creative team for the next reboot.

There's a difference between adding scenes into an extended cut and "Patching". Patching would be fixing the weak effects in Justice League.

Punch-Drunk Love is the best romantic comedy and I can’t believe Ralph didn’t bring it up for that question near the end.
Alex likes Smash Bros. I hope I get to fight him online someday.

speaking of documentaries watch Evil Genius on Netflix. Its about a real life heist that has so many layers of insanity to it. Very intriguing stuff

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is labelled as a science-fiction romantic drama on Wikipedia
Isn’t birdo the exact opposite from the Disney thing? In the Japanese version of smb2, he was described as trans and since then, Nintendo has backpedaled now claiming that birdo is a girl.
Tanner Vonwald yep, that's how it is
The thing is, they never called her "trans". They probably meant it as a joke in the original, but later realized that as a joke it could only make them look bad and offend people, so they took it back.
Nicolás Fernández they said she was a transvestite, which is trans
no John, trans people and transvestites are two very different things. Trans people have gender dysphoria, transvestites have a crossdressing fetish.
I'm pretty sure birdo wasn't trans, just a crossdresser.

I just wanted to point out something regarding the last question about genres and one of the answer was animation, animation is not a genre, is a medium and if Brad Bird hears you he will punch you in the face, here is the proof:
Brad Bird
“…Animation is not a genre. Because Disney has been the only one that’s lavished any care on it, people [then] think it’s the only kind that can be told successfully…”
And here’s the best one
“People think of animation only doing things where people are dancing around and doing a lot of histrionics, but animation is not a genre.
I'm going to punch that person!!”

Ralph and YMS' polarization is 10/10

Of course he's just a contrarian because he doesn't agree with you (and the majority). Of course!
How dare he not just parrot opinions you already heard before!
I kind of expected someone to mention We Happy Few. It’s the only thing from E3 I genuinely give a shit about.
Does Adam think that diarrhea is an emotion?
Jaden Warner Yeah, perhaps he should have used the word _"feeling,"_ because you can FEEL diarrhea churning in your bowels.
Adam's just "trying to understand it", but he's laughing at anyone who enjoys it...
