Even tho they call it pro, i'm missing quite alot pro features in their camera app. I'm using Samsungs flagship galaxy phones every once in a while, this time right before the launch of the 16 series phones, so i could trade in my iphone 15 pro max beforehand to get the most value out of it. And one thing i've learned using the s24 ultra for about 4 weeks was that man, they've pulled the trigger on their camera. Literally everything I would expect from a pro camera was there. Manual ISO setting, balances, exposure times, raw, heck even a manually steppable focus. It's a shame apple's not moving any closer with being more pro on their pro phones. "Hey! Lets add an annoying new button!" instead of "Hey! Give them the Pro features they deserve!". And thats comming from me, an now iphone 16 pro max user. Greetings from Germany.

For general "daytime" photography, I've found third-party apps to almost duplicate close to what you can find on Android devices. Apple has not and supposedly will not allow developers to access the Night mode API(s). I half wish they would. Apps like Halide would easily become the app to use on iPhone, I don't think Apple would want that though.

The iPhone 16 Pros will shoot 12MP ultra wide photos once the light level hits below a certain threshold. I think Apple knew the low light capabilities at full 48MP is just not good. They have confidence in the main sensor (1x) to allow 48MP full res in low light (without night mode) but not for the ultra wide (0.5x)

I was wondering if you could show a comparison of the 0.5x ultra wide night shots from the 15 pro vs 16 pro? I’ve just upgraded from an 11 pro, and was quite disappointed to hear various sources complaining that the 48mp ultra wide results in significantly worse low light performance than the 12mp ultra wide on 15 pro :/
E.g. in Fstopper’s review “Iphone 16 pro camera test (major flaws)” he was shocked at how bad the low light photos came out on 16 pro vs 15 pro and 14 pro.
It seems almost as bad as the 11 pro’s ultra wide was. One of the main reasons I was looking forward to the upgrade was to get a much better 0.5x camera, with better low light performance.

The iPhone 15 Pros and 16 Pros both use a 1/1.28” main sensor actually. Rumors said 1/1.14” but it didn’t come true. So Apple has been using the same 1/1.28” main sensor since 14 Pro (3 years now). They’ve been using that same 1/2.55” ultrawide sensor since the 14 Pro (also 3 years now) unfortunately.

The sensor specs are identical save for a faster interface, so I think as you said, it has more to do with software. Also, I do notice the 16 was slightly darker, perhaps the reason why there was more color in the stars and slightly less noise? It might have stacked differently too. Remember, the iPhone even in RAW, doesn't take a single snap from the sensor.

I noticed the same issue with the new 16 Pro 48MP ultra wide. In good light it’s no better (maybe even slightly softer) and in low light, the old 15 Pro 12MP ultra wide was brighter and less softening going on. I think Apple made a huge mistake not giving it a bigger sensor to accommodate 48MP. It’s still a 1/2.55” sensor

9:42 Is this picture on the left from 15?
It seems to me that this photo is much sharper, it has more details and you can't see such a digital transition between colors.
    If so, 16 is nonsense.
The wide-angled lens generates much less details in 16 I have already noticed it, with photos during the day.

The sad part for me is, Google Pixels have for the last two generations at least been able to capture astrophotography with the ultra wide on their phones. If Apple does improve this mid-cycle, I'll be further impressed.
Frankly the smart money is wait another generation of iPhone Pro models and see what happens. (Granted you can say that any year since iPhone 11 Pro.)
On a similar note, I can tell which one was taken on the 15 Pro. And frankly, just from this video, I think I prefer it over the 16 Pro. At least for now, until you edit it.
