- Faverolles are silly and friendly chickens, but they have a few quirks that should be considered before you decide to introduce them to your flock. This short video is intended to share what we know about these birds.

Our salmon faverolle Helen is the sweetest chicken ever. She even lets us pick her up, flip her over and pet her belly. Never met a sweeter chicken!
Their temperament alone makes them worth keeping. A little talkative, but they hit all the marks don’t they. Easy going, pretty, decent layer, and hearty. They might be one of the best kept secrets in chicken keeping.
My favorite breed they're the comedians of the chicken world in my opinion. 😊
I'm supposed to pick up 2 chicks tomorrow: a salmon faverolle and a cream legbar. We already have an Easter egger, buff orpington, and blue Australorp. The last 2 will be 1 week older than the new chicks. I'm hoping with such docile breeds the faverolle won't get picked on much. I like the idea of 2, but we only have so much room in the coop. We have the space, but I want all our chickens to have more than 12 inches of roosting space when full grown.
That's why they don't want to roost, they want to stay away from the bullies.
i grew up with the small faverolles (no idea if it's called "dwarf faverolles"!?) and one of the hens was my best friend for many years :D she loved to cuddle and sleep on my lap... good times
Thank you for a very insightful and informative video. We just moved back to the countryside, and I am about to purchase a flock for the first time in about ten years. I have been considering getting the Salmon Faverolles, and your video was really helpful. I really like the Salmon Faverolles because I want chickens that are good with my grandchildren and that like human interaction, and I really like the way they look. Seeing the way they ran across the yard in your video was the cutest thing, and made me want to get them even more. But now I realize that I really need to consider how I can prevent them being picked on by the other chickens. Buying the entire flock at the same time, and spending a lot of time genteling them, and socializing the chicks together, in my presence, from the time they are one day old chicks may eliminate the problem. But animals are animals, and I grew up on a farm so I know I will still need to be vigilant in monitoring their behavior, and even then, a timid chicken may still get picked on. I really appreciate you sharing the real attributes of this breed, both good and bad, so viewers can make a really informed decision about whether the Faverolles are a good breed for them. And in my case it has raised an issue that I did not realize about the breed, that I can now prepare for. Thank you.
Favaucaunas are going to be an interesting cross. They are already different. They are scrappy, ready to get out and explore. They have a lot of flight and free range instinct but are homebodies. I just have 4 though so far. I'm excited to see what color eggs I get from them.
We have Americaunas now. They are escape artists and exceptional flyers. We’ll have to look into those cross breeds.

I’ve got 2 silkies 1 barred rock 1 Sussex 1 Swedish flower 1 faverolle and an unknown rooster and she’s the top hen at the moment
Recently bought chicks from rural king. Got, what was labeled brahmas. But, after a few days, noticed five toes. Knowing brahmas have four toes, I knew, these could not be brahmas! After some research, I've concluded, these must be salmon faverolles. Thank you for this very informative video. As I had never even heard of the breed before now. They are still under a week old. But already see their calm disposition. Looking forward to having them. Even though, it was unentended! Thanks again for the info! Great video

Picked up 2 yesterday and within 4 hours, 1 passed sadly😢. So I went back and picked up 2 more.😂😂😂 We had read about them last year but never thought we would come across them, and yesterday, our local RK had them in stock😮. The first thing I noticed already is the other chicks that are the same age are already pecking at them so I will watch them very closely, plus they come to me already when I check on them in their broader. Thank you for passing on your observations about this breed and the great tips on how we will need to help them and make some accommodations for their nesting habits as well since they have a difficult time roosting. I really am truly grateful for your info so our girls will grow up to be healthy and well-adjusted hens, and I will definitely do more routine health checks for the leg mites and lice, too. ❤🐣❤

Great vid! I have 3 baby Faverolles. I love them.
All of ours loved the 2x 4s so they can perch up on at night. In fact they go way up at the top part of the coop. Which we didn’t t think they would consider to rest on.

I have the regular size ones and the bantys there great similar to silkies but seem to do well with my rhode islands surprisingly
This was all very helpful! We just picked up a single faverolles after losing one of our new golden sex link chicks from Tractor Supply. It was the best option but now I am concerned about having a single Faverolles. Our other chickens are pretty calm - an Easter Egger, and a couple Rhode Island reds, and three Plymouth rock chickens. Hopefully she doesn't get too picked on.
Hopefully she does well. Every situation is different. We have noticed our ISA brown hens are most likely to pick on them relentlessly. Best wishes on the new addition!

If you know as most chicken keepers do, that faverolles do get picked on within the pecking order, why would you keep them in a mixed flock?
Don't you think that is irresponsible ? After all you are responsible for their welfare.

Agreed. Ours were killed by new neighbors dogs that run loose. The neighbors around us all hoped it wasn’t “the pretty ones” but sadly it was.

My favorelle is "Teenie the meanie" as she was the top hen of the other 3 I had(wyandotte, andalusian, comet) and chest kicked them or pecked them in the face LOL
She screams in distain when I pick her up but I laugh and love it. So much so I got another female and two males- and just hatched her baby today(with a turken dad) as she is getting older. ❤😂🎉
Sounds exactly like my favorite Easter egger, Owl. I bought one chick online today. I am hoping these 2 will be fast friends. Owl won’t defend herself from the other birds but none of the other birds have made her bloody never.
Glad you aren’t experiencing bloodied hens. It can be frustrating when you have one or two hens that are unnecessarily aggressive. Enjoy that new chick!
These are one of the breeds I'm considering. I'm wanting to get all docile breeds so hopefully pecking won't be a huge problem
Americaunas have been a good mix with them.
My faverolle has always roosted since being a chick didn’t know you had to train them!
Some must be better than others. We have removed the shelves and that helped. Once other options were gone they are better about roosting. One hen still sleeps in a nesting box.

We bought the Faverolles out of a stock tank at Tractor Supply. I think those chicks came from Hoover’s Hatchery.
All chickens want cover. All chickens run over an open space because they don't feel safe, they need cover from trees or bushes.
Also all chickens love dust baths.
What about their eggs? Did you even show us their eggs or talk about size, colors and production or I did I miss from your video?
I'm considering suburban chickens, and I've read mixed things on the noise level of Faverolles. How loud do you find them?
Some days they are a bit talkative actually. Ours were killed by a new neighbors loose dog unfortunately. We learned that our neighbors really liked the Faverolles because we heard from more than one that they hoped the “fancy” hens weren’t what was killed. Simply stated those hens were noisy, easily startled, and quirky, but clearly loved in the neighborhood. If you need to appease the neighbors Americaunas are very quiet, pretty, and very low maintenance. They lay Easter eggs and any irked neighbors can probably be disarmed with a half dozen little colorful eggs.

I found these are typically a seasonal offering. We got ours at Tractor Supply. Don’t quote me, but I think Hoover Hatchery was where they originally came from. We had no choice but a straight run. We gave the roosters to local hobbyists that wanted them and we kept the hens. You may be able to source them in your area if you do some internet searching. Your best bet is to contact a hatchery that carries them, and ask when chicks will be available.
I'm thinking of housing them with my silkies...if they are that timid. They are beautiful

It's hard to contact folks directly here, so here goes..... I have just purchased our first flock (to be delivered in the spring). And we have chosen Salmon Faverolles as our ONLY breed. We chose it for their looks, good nature, comical antics, and year long consistent egg laying. Because we will have no other types of chickens, we are designing their coop and outside areas with their specific needs and "desires".
This being the case, since these don't normally "roost" on polls or branches, but instead prefer to be flat on surfaces, I am thinking of adding "shelves" which will be 8 inches wide for them to "perch" on in the coop. Does this seem like a good idea, or would adding larger "raised floors" be a better approach? Both are easily done, but I would think the raised floors would require more bedding and more of a cleaning issue than the "shelve" perches.
Any feedback would be most appreciated. Cheers!
i just got my 9 salmon faverolles and i think im going with the shelves approach just like you.
We have some roos of mixed americauna descent, and being escape artists, their fowl weather roost of choice is often a covered shelf near the hen pen. It is easy to scrape off once in awhile.
Do you think if we got three pullets; one barred rock, one Wyandotte, and one faverolle at the same time they would get along?
Chickens all have their own personalities, so the potential for an aggressive hen is always there. With this in mind, the varieties you’re looking at are all known for being pretty laid-back. Pretty choices too. Seems reasonable to give it a try.

Are the roosters noisy compared to other breeds?
We gave our roosters away because we only wanted hens. I can say when it comes to roosters you may not know what he will do until you’ve got him. One rooster was everything you didn’t want. The upside is they are so pretty you will be able to give him away without trouble if you’re wanting to try one and see.

Hi, I have one Faverolle, 4 Australorp and one Sumatra, all are girls, my Faverolle was so nice with my husband and me, she jumps on us and let us pick her up, the Australorp just run like crazy when we try to pet them and the Sumatra the same, but for maybe 2 weeks ago my Faverolle is not affectional with us anymore, she just come to us when we have treats but she doesn’t jump on me anymore, when I pick her up she scream like if she is angry and jump back with the other chicks, she doesn’t look hurt and I’m pretty gently with her, but I feel she doesn’t love us anymore 😭 I want to know if we did something wrong, is this is just a phase and she is going to be back the way she was or if she is getting the personality of the an Australorp because she is with that breed all the time and she doesn’t know other Faverolle like her. Please help!
Things change as the hens position in the pecking order shifts. They also change as they mature. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. She may take an interest in more attention again. Give it time.

Hello, your bars are too big - chicken needs to wrap the bar with fingers. Just do it like mother nature. Use round shaped bar like the birds use in the nature - tree branches. I use cca 3 - 5 cm in diameter, according to chicken variety. I absolutely have no problem and the chickens are on the bars during night.
Winter temps get as low as -33 here. Flat surfaces allow the hen to cover her feet when she roosts, which reduces frost bite on the feet.
Don't hold chickens like babies. They can't breathe well when you hold them on their backs.
